Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 Movie Review: One Hell Of A Good Intergalactic Ride

 

WHEN MARVEL'S "Guardians of the Galaxy", created in 1969 yet, was turned into a movie and shown three years ago, it became an unexpected blockbuster raking in a jackpot of $773 million worldwide, thanks to all the silly laughs and irreverent craziness that co-writer and director James Gunn put into it.

Now, Gunn is back in the sequel, "Vol. 2", with Chris Pratt (who it turned into an A List star) as Star Lord or Peter Quill, who has a Vol. 2 of his Awesome Mixtape from his Mom containing his fave 70s and 80s songs in his Walkman. Gunn uses the same formula he had utilized in the first movie, a combination of screwball comic scenes with tongue-in-cheek lines and cartoonish action scenes mixed with eye-candy production design and spectacular special effects.

Aside from Peter, the old gang that you enjoyed hanging out with in the first movie is also back in a bigger adventure: Zoe Zaldana as the green-skinned Gamora, wrestler Dave Bautista as the hulking mighty Drax, plus the lovable CGI characters of the wisecracking raccoon Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper) and the tree bark Baby Groot (by Vin Diesel who must have earned a lot for just saying "I am Groot".) Also back are the blue-skinned Yondu (Michael Rooker), who kidnapped Quill from Planet Earth when he was a boy and Nebula (Karen Gillan), Gamora's evil cyborg sister who turns out to be not so evil after all.



The Guardians get into trouble when Rocket stole some batteries from a planet inhabited by golden people called the Sovereign who is headed by Elizabeth Debicki as Ayesha. They are assisted by a new character, Ego (Kurt Russell, who's also in "Fast & Furious 8"), who first appears in the opening scene as a rakish young man in love with a pretty girl who'll turn out to be Peter's mom.

Ego is actually a celestial with his own planet and is really so full of Me, Myself and I. He has an Asian-looking assistant with antennae, Mantis (Pom Klementieff), who has the gift of feeling what other people feel when she puts her hands on them, but is totally ignorant when it comes to relating with other human beings.

Peter has big daddy issues growing up. He introduces David Hasselhoff of "Knight Rider" as his father. Imagine his surprise when his real dad turns out to be no one else but Ego, just like Luke Skywalker learning that Darth Vader was his father. Ego wants him to be an ally so, together, they can dominate the world, or rather, the entire universe. Will Peter be tempted? We won't go into spoiler territory. Suffice it to say that, father and son ties are also tackled with Yondu, Peter's surrogate dad who will make an act of supreme sacrifice for the child he kidnapped before.

All in all, it's one hell of a good intergalactic ride and you can roll with all the fun and games from the first big fight scene, with the very cute Baby Groot doing his usual business while his colleagues are battling with a huge octopus-like monster, up to the climax where Baby Groot is again involved and might just press the wrong button in a bomb that might send them all to kingdom come.

Don't leave the theater right away when the end credits are flashed because there are many short previews distributed throughout that indicate what to watch out for in "Vol. 3", like Baby Groot becoming a teenager and Sylvester Stallone coming on board as a new character, Stakar Ogord.

Director Dan Villegas Today's Busiest Young Director With New TV Show, 'Ikaw Lang Ang Iibigin', And New Movie, 'Luck At First Sight'

 

DIRECTOR DAN VILLEGAS is truly the busiest young director working in showbiz today. He has a new TV show, "Ikaw Lang ang Iibigin", that starts airing today on ABS-CBN and a new movie, "Luck at First Sight" that opens in theaters on May 3. He will direct yet another movie, a Metro Manila filmfest entry reuniting his "Walang Forever" stars Jericho Rosales and Jennylyn Mercado.

He has really come a long way from being a director of photography for indie films where he started.
He feels lucky to have been tapped to direct the reunion of the Kimerald love team in "Ikaw Lang ang Iibigin", which is about triathletes. "Nandun pa rin ang chemistry nila, matindi pa rin," he says. "Mabubuhay uli lahat ng fans ng love team nila rito."

He also considers himself lucky to direct Viva's "Luck at First Sight". "It's different from past films I did na realistic. Dito, may element of magic. I found it challenging kaya na-excite ako directing Jericho Rosales and Bela Padilla in this rom-com na mas maraming comedy scenes kaya mas dapat siyang tawaging com-rom. Talagang ang saya naming lahat while shooting this movie which is about two people who rely so much on luck and eventually fall in love. Echo remains fun to be with after we did 'Walang Forever'. Very humble pa rin, generous, a true professional. First time ko to work with Bela and she's very focused. Magugulat ka, ibang level ang seriousness niya sa bawat eksena to make sure it will work. Ang maganda, they have a real connection with each other and this works wonders for the movie."

Barbie Forteza & Leading Men Featured In May Issue Of Yes Magazine, Four New Leading Men Join The Cast, Along With Ayra Mariano & Ronaldo Valdez

BARBIE FORTEZA and her four leading men are featured in a special article with so many photographs in this May's issue of Yes Magazine. Anna Pingol of Yes told us they wanted to make it a cover story but it took GMA-7 a long time to give them a schedule for their stars.

"Holy Week na kasi nang, finally, maibigay sila sa amin and by that time, too late na sila for a cover story," she says. "But still, kahit nasa inside story lang sila, we gave them so many pages that will surely please the fans of their show, 'Meant to Be'."

Meantime, the four new leading men of Barbie have already made an appearance in the show: Dave Bornea, Carl Cervantes, Matthias Rhoads and Vince Vandorpe. They will be the rivals of Ken Chan, Ivan Dorschner, Jak Roberto and Addy Raj not only for the heart of Barbie as Billie but also in their business as the four new guys have put up a new bar to compete with the existing of bar of Ken and company. Also joining the cast are Ayra Mariano as Nikkie, Ken's former girlfriend who wants him back, and Ronaldo Valdez as Lolo Ric, a rich collector of antiques who will be paired with Gloria Romero as Lola Madj. Their love team will be called Madjic. Ronaldo's son, Janno Gibbs, is also in the show as Keempee de Leon's rival over Manilyn Reynes. "Meant to Be" is such a big hit it has been extended on the air up to June.

Gary Valenciano Will Have An Exciting Season Finale For His 34th Year Series Of Concerts, 'Gary V Presents', At The Solaire Theatre On May 12 & 13, 19 & 20

GARY VALENCIANO was his usual electrifying himself when he performed "Huwag Ka Nang Umiyak" and a medley of his danceable tunes like "Hataw" and "Di Bale Na Lang" at the videoke presscon for his concert series, "34 Years of Gary V at the theater in Solaire", which will be held on May 12 & 13, 19 & 20. Up to now, we can think of no one who can replace Gary when he does his upbeat numbers which he does so naturally. That's why it's tough to be a child of Gary as he has set a very high standard that even his own kids cannot top. To think that he has early onset diabetes for almost 4 decades, and yet, he remains to be a tireless dynamo up to now.

And Gary also remains to be one of those iconic celebrities whose great PR remains unmatched. He knows everyone and is very warm and friendly especially to the writers who've been around since the time he started in showbiz. Gary's series of concerts, "Gary V Presents", that aims to pay it forward by introducing younger singers to today's audiences was a big hit. All those who went to see it at Kia Theatre last year raved not only about Gary but also his guest singers who represent a wide variety of genre from pop and R&B to jazz and classical music.

At his presscon, seven of his guests singers at the Solaire also performed: Katrina Velarde who did "And I Am Telling You" from "Dreamgirls", Janice Javier with "Killing Me Softly", Carla Guevarra with a moving rendition of "I'd Give My Life for You" from "Miss Saigon", Lara Maigue who showed her fine training in classical music with "Sa Kabukiran" that brought the
house down, and male singers Timmy Pavino, Allan Silonga of Daddy's Home and RJ de la Fuente. Other singers in Solaire will be Mitoy Yonting of "The Voice", Jimmy Marquez, Bullet Dumas and Gary's darling daughter, Kiana Valenciano. Original Manoeuvres dancers Jason and Joshua Zamora will join the show with the Adlib Dancers.

The show will be a season finale and for his next concert series, Gary hopes to feature a different set of young artists. "This is part of my advocacy to provide younger singers with a bigger platform to showcase their music to wider audiences nationwide. But of course, this first set of performers in 'Gary V Presents' will always have a special place in my heart."

COLEEN GARCIA plays contravida to Kim Chiu in "Ikaw Lang ang Iibigin" that starts airing this Monday before "Showtime". Why did she agree to do it when she's already doing lead roles in both movies and TV soaps? "Actually, noon ko pa gusto gumawa ng contravida roles, para maiba naman," she says. "As an actress, gusto ko palagi ng bago, ibang role, different from the past roles I've done before, so sobrang masaya ako rito sa 'Ikaw Lang ang Iibigin'. Maganda ang role ko as Isabelle, ex-girlfriend ni Jake Cuenca as Carlos. We both work ni Jake in the same company making energy drinks and I resented it nang kunin niya si Kim na endorser and I will try to make Kim's life miserable. I'm sure magagalit sa akin ang fans niya rito."

About her boyfriend, Billy Crawford, can she truly feel and say na "siya lang ang iibigin" nito? "Oo naman. Nag-propose na nga siya at ikakasal na kami next year. Our target is April next year para one year ang preparation. Magse-seminar na nga kami sa church as marriage preparation. Hindi naman ako magye-yes sa kanya kung hindi ko napi-feel kundi niya sinabi sa'king 'Ikaw Lang ang Iibigin'. I've realized now how much of a commitment marriage is. But I'm really happy kasi he's very supportive naman sa pagiging committed ko pa rin sa career ko. Kasi nabibigyan ko pa rin naman ng oras ang work ko, which is very important to my heart also. So masasabi kong as much as iniibig ko ang future husband ko, iniibig ko pa rin naman ang trabaho ko."

SHOW DESCRIPTION: Bubble Gang first aired on GMA Network on October 20, 1995. It was inspired by the ABC's gag show Tropang Trumpo. Two of its first cast members; Ogie Alcasid and Michael V. came from that show. The show occupied the Friday night timeslot of the now-defunct musical variety show, Vilma!. The cast of the show where: Aiko Melendez, and Eric Fructuoso, and newcomers Susan Lozada, Assunta De Rossi, Jackie De Guzman, Wendell Ramos and Antonio Aquitania (who were hired by the late GMA talent manager, Douglas Quijano) who is one of the first casts of Bubble Gang with Alcasid and Michael V. on their early days. There were two extras in the show, such as Diego Llorico, who was working as a production assistant to the show, currently also a segment producer, & Susan Lozada's personal assistant Marissa "Mykah" Flores, she was eventually one of Wendell Ramos love interest.

MAJOR, MAJOR Exciting Times, Indeed: Meanwhile... FOREVERMORE opens on Televista Nigeria

No, I was definitely not bored blogging. The truth is, I purposely didn't blog regularly like before. True, the situation was certainly icky- (dealing with and writing about cheap people, a.k.a. mercenaries, always is & I usually cut a wide berth around them in real life, like any self-respecting person would) -  but I guess, I suddenly realized the comments to my latest articles were certainly injecting extra energy to the blog. I was mostly getting ideas for my articles from the comments anyway, so I thought, why not let the comments power the blog for a change?

I know my friends are the anchor commentators but along the way, they were joined by other intelligent souls which just left me in awe for their wonderful imagination: it was not the usual discussion one reads in the usual showbiz forum (or political forum for that matter)- there was firing from all the cylinders, no unorthodox base was spared here. We might be discussing showbiz one minute but we could be seeing things from the perspective of exploding nuclear missiles the next. Just the kind of conversation that gets my juices flowing. Certainly no boring moment here.

Wonder of wonders, our hits didn't dip even if we posted the least number of articles this month. It means, everybody was looking up for the latest in the comments everyday. So we are evolving. We have here a blog-forum which refuse to be boxed by superficial narratives or hackneyed cultural Marxism. Just the way I like it.

Meanwhile, these are exciting times, so many things are happening in the world that at times appear even surreal. Our blog should ride the excitement for a while. I will close the Comments for ordinary posts (like this one) so we can concentrate on the more "controversial" ones.

By the way, this blog is still mainly about Pinoy showbiz. Lest we forget.

Meanwhile, in Nigeria, the international hit teleserye of LizQuen loveteam (of Enrique Gil & Liza Soberano), Forevermore , returns. It has already been shown in almost the entire Subsaharan Africa last year.

AS THEY SAY in Tagalog, "Sa hinaba-haba ng prusisyon, sa simbahan din ang tuloy." We've all been witnesses to the circuitous love story of Dr. Vicki Belo and Hayden Kho, with Vicki being much older than her groom who was even accused of just being after her wealth. Hayden then tried showbiz but didn't succeed. They had a falling out when the scandalous sex video of Hayden with other partners came out.

They broke up, Hayden's got suspended as a physician, tried to commit suicide, then they became friends again, Hayden became born again and is now a pastor, Dr. Vicki got sick, got well, they had their own child Scarlet, and now, they're finally facing the altar in Paris this coming September.

It's highs and lows are much more dramatic than that of any teleserye, isn't it? Well, we're glad for them. It's been a torturous long journey for their love story and here's hoping it has finally come to a happy ending. And may they really live happily ever after.

Showbiz couple Tommy Esguerra and Miho Nishida, whose romance blossomed while they were housemates of Pinoy Big Brother, have already broken up after a 15-month relationship.

And these could be two of their last photos together: one is from the ABS-CBN Summer Station ID 2017 and the other is from their Kapamilya Chat with the fans held just yesterday, April 26.



In the 2nd photo taken yesterday, Tomiho no longer looked like a sweet couple, and were not seated so close.

A day after, their breakup is all over social media.

One indication that Tomiho have split already is the fact that Tommy has already deleted pictures of Miho in his Instagram account. Miho perhaps will be next to do the same in her IG.

As of this posting, they still follow each other in the said photo-sharing site.

Iza Calzado Gets Universal Praise For Her Awesome Performance As The Beleaguered Heroine In 'Bliss' To Premiere In Theatres On May 10

IZA CALZADO is ecstatic over the praises she received from the press right after the special preview of her new movie, "Bliss", at the Gateway Theatre. Everyone thinks she's awesome and says it's her best performance in her entire career so far.

"I owe it to our writer-director Jerrold Tarog," she says. "Marami kaming nag-audition for the lead role in 'Bliss' and I'm really glad na akong pinili niya. But actually, hindi pa man niya ako ini-inform, I already felt na akin itong role na ito. Akin ito."

Iza plays a movie actress, Jane Ciego, who started in showbiz as a child star and is already tired of playing the same roles over and over again so she decides to produce her own prestige movie to win awards and gain respect. In the film within a film's climax, she's supposed to be raised from her bed through a harness, but it snaps and she falls down, losing her consciousness. When she wakes up, she's already a cripple who moves around in a wheelchair and is held prisoner in a large house guarded over by an abusive nurse, Lilibeth (Adrienne Vergara). Soon, she can no longer distinguish if what she is experiencing is a nightmare or reality.

The film's ending is shocking as it shows the nurse molesting the unconscious and naked Iza, then she suddenly opens her eyes and wakes up from her coma. It's a full frontal shot but we have a sneaking suspicion that Iza is not really naked but is wearing a body suit since the skin tone is different from her normal color. See the movie and judge for yourself if it's really Iza who's totally nude or it's all a camera trick.

Did her boyfriend, Ben Wintle, see the film and what's his reaction to that controversial scene which must be the reason why the movie was initially given an X rating by the MTRCB? "Yes, he has seen it. Natawa lang siya. He said mas maganda raw yung totoong nipple ko. He's very open minded and very supportive. He knows it's something I just have to do as it's part of my work."

How is it working with Jerrold Tarog who's best known for "Heneral Luna"? "It's my first time to work with him and I was really impressed with the amount of preparation that went before the actual shooting. He has a shot list and you can actually ask him sa set kung ilang shots pa tayo, unlike sa iba na hindi alam kung kailan matatapos ang shooting. Maayos ang naging working relationship and he has no tantrums on the set. I'm glad I trusted him as 'Bliss' gave me my first international acting award in Osaka."

The movie is produced by TBA (Tuko, Buchi Boy & Artikulo Uno Productions), the same company that made the first good film we saw this year, "I'm Drunk, I Love You". In the presscon for "I'm Drunk", we ask the producers why they're scheduling it against the movie of a more established love team, LizQuen in "My Ex and Whys". They said they were not fazed by it as they're offering a pleasant alternative. As we all know by now, LizQuen easily clobbered "I'm Drunk" at the box office.

Now, the same thing is happening again and it's like they've not learned their lesson. "Bliss", an R-18 rated movie for adults only, opens in theaters other than the SM Cinema chain on May 10,. It will be up against Regal's "Our Mighty Yaya", a G-rated wholesome movie starring Ai Ai de las Alas for the whole family. Honestly, which do you think has better chances of hitting it big at the tills?

VIVA ARTISTS AGENCY is launching its newest love team, Julianella, with the teen dance team of Julian Trono and Ella Cruz. Dubbed as the Teen Dance Prince and Princess because of their series of dance video hits that went viral, Viva is now preparing their launching film, tentatively titled "Fanboy/Fangirl". There's also a TV series based on a Wattpad hit book series that they will do, "Break the Casanova's Heart", aimed for release in the 3rd quarter of 2017.

Viva exec Veronique del Rosario says: "We first saw their potential individually and now, as a pair. They are both very talented, hardworking, and we believe they have a bright future ahead of them."

How was their tandem formed? "Dati na kaming magkakilala then napunta siya sa GMA-7 at ako, sa ABS," says Ella. "Then nagkita kami sa Viva, who's managing us now. I asked him to be a guest in my music video and he also asked me to be a guest sa kanyang music video."

"Doon nagsimula, nakita ng Viva ang chemistry namin at pinagtambal kami," says Julian. "Nakatulong na may nabuo na kaming friendship and now, mas lumalim yun. Nag-compliment yung aming mutual passion for dancing."

Viva has released their solo singles, "Tamis" and "Balang Araw", both chart toppers, and their first duet, "Tumalon", is also a big hit. Their first collaboration video, "Versace on the Floor", has gained over 3 million views. What qualities do they like the most in each other?

"I really admire that she values her family so much," says Julian. "We both care for our parents and seek their guidance. Magulo si Ella, maingay, kaya masarap kasama. Totoo siya, very thoughtful and very appreciative."

"Ako rin, I admire yung pagiging family-oriented niya," says Ella. "And I admire his creativeness kasi nahahawa ako. Kami mismo, we contribute sa choreography ng aming dance numbers. We have our own ideas and I appreciate it na he believes in my talent, he motivates me and pushes me that I can do better."

Do they see themselves falling seriously in love with each other in the future? "I think it's too early to go into that," says Julian. "We want to take advantage muna of all the good opportunities that Viva is giving us."

"Opo nga, masyado pang maaga. Friends na lang muna kami," says Ella.

But do they at least think that each of them will be good boyfriend or girlfriend material? They both answer "Yes".

Kimerald fans protest 'Ikaw Lang ang Iibigin' time slot

'Ikaw Lang ang Iibigin', the comeback teleserye of Kimerald Kim Chiu and Gerald Anderson, is already set to air its pilot episode on Labor Day, May 1, as officially announced yesterday by ABS-CBN and its production unit Dreamscape Entertainment.

But the Kimerald fans have expressed strong disapproval over the timeslot of 'Ikaw Lang ang Iibigin'. It's upposedly the ultimate comeback event on primetime this 2017, but surprisingly it will be given instead a daytime slot, airing right before It's Showtime.

On social media sites, particularly on Twitter, fans are protesting the timeslot, hoping ABS-CBN to reconsider giving the new soap a primetime slot. Here are some of their reactions:






I actually understand the fans. They've been waiting for it, and expecting it as a primetime offering, just like all Kimerald soaps in the past ('Sana Maulit Muli', 'My Girl', 'Tayong Dalawa' and 'Kung Tayo'y Magkakalayo'). The tried-and-tested loveteam deserves to be on primetime.

ABS-CBN perhaps is confident that they will hit another gold on daytime thru this new Kimerald soap, airing on the timeslot that once occupied by the very successful TV series 'Be Careful with My Heart', which ran for more than 2 years (9 seasons). - Mykiru.ph

Fast & Furious 8 Movie Review: The Fast Cars Series Loses Its Steam And Has A Flat Tire In This Boring 8th Movie In The Franchise

 

IN ADS, the title is "The Fate of the Furious", but in the actual movie's title credits, the title is simply "Fast & Furious 8". The first "F&F" movie in the franchise was shown 16 years ago and this is the 8th edition, so it's an average of one movie every two years. The next sequel is due for 2019 and judging from how 8 came out on screen, we're seriously not that interested anymore with 9.

We know "F&F" is just meant to be a testosterone-fueled popcorn action movie with jaw-dropping stunts and yes, it used to be fun before even if plot and character development are not considered to be that important. But F&F8 has gone so over the edge and certainly looks quite idiotic compared to the previous ones which may be cartoonish but still interesting to watch. The plot of F&F8 is less credible than even an episode of "Paw Patrol" and "PJ Mask" (yes, I watch these cartoon shows because of my grandchildren.)

It does have a bombastic opening. Dominic (Vin Diesel) and Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) are in Cuba for their honeymoon when Dom saves a relative's dilapidated car from being repossessed by a loan shark who owns a very fast car. Dom challenges the loan shark to a street race where the winner takes it all and they stage an unbelievably outrageous race through the streets of Havana, with Dom driving the burning car backwards to the finish line then plunging it straight to the middle of the ocean.


Dom is then accosted by a mysterious woman, Cipher (Charlize Theron, who was last seen as Furiosa in "Mad Max"), a ruthless terrorist who makes him turn against his team. Charlize is so good in her evil villain role that she literally swallows the zombie-like Vin Diesel in their scenes together, threatening that he has no choice but to follow her or else... It turns out she has a secret ace against him that forces him to cooperate with her. But his friends do not know this and they feel terribly hurt by his traitorous betrayal.

Meantime, Hobbs (The Rock) finds himself in the same prison as his old foe, Deckard (Jason Statham), and they stage a prison riot to escape. They must now team up with Michelle, Chris Ludacris Bridges as the technology expert, Nathalie Emmanuel as the hacker and Tyrese Gibson as the comic relief, to thwart Charlize's evil plans with the help of government agents Kurt Russell and Scott Eastwood (son of Clint).

The devilish schemes of Charlize takes the characters to the streets of New York where a carmaggedon involving hundreds of cars raining down from parking buildings and, later, to a frozen naval base, where the interminable climax involving a submarine takes place.

Director F. Gary Gray's treatment of the movie is a sort of anything goes in its storytelling, like a character you thought has died turns out to be still very much alive and even engages in lengthy fight scenes with a baby boy in a bassinet in his hand. We even meet his British mom who turns out to be an Oscar winner!

If you'd just go with the flow and not ask too many questions, you might still enjoy the movie even if it's running time is just too long and we got so very bored halfway through. At this point, the franchise that started as a film involving fast cars and sexy women has devolved into being a crime flick with James Bondish villains and is primarily meant to be a cash cow that is profitable world wide.

You've actually seen it all before but it still works at the box office because there are just too many viewers who want to see expensive cars being demolished on screen, even if some of them are actually just miniatures as shown in the film's 'the making of F&F8' docu.
