Rico Yan Untimely Death Remembered

The solemn observance of Good Friday 2002 was abruptly disrupted when news broke out that Rico, at a tender age of 27, died in his sleep at the Dos Palmas Resort in Palawan.   Rico was reportedly at the resort to shoot a TV commercial for a local telecoms company. According to a news item filed by the Manila Bulletin on March 29, 2002, the police report filed by Southern Tagalog police director, Chief Supt. Domingo Reyes, Rico's body was found inside his room at around 9 a.m. by his friend, actors Dominic Ochoa and Janna Victoria.   Dominic and Janna were said to have come looking for Rico when the latter failed to show up for their scheduled rendezvous at the resort lobby. Rico was reportedly rushed to the Seventh Day Adventist Hospital, where doctors failed to revive him. A later autopsy revealed the matinee idol had died of acute hemorrhagic pancreatitis leading to cardiac arrest.   With initial investigations by the Palawan police yielding no signs of foul play in Rico's sudden death, his older brother, Bobby, flew to the town to pick up his brother's body. A televised funeral rites in Manila for the fallen youth idol was said to have been attended by an estimate 10,000 people.   Rico's remains was laid to rest at the Manila Memorial Park. Rico, however, lives through through his 11 movies (including the classic "Got 2 Believe"), four soap operas (including "Mula sa Puso"), sitcoms like "Whattamen" (with Dominic and Marvin Agustin), and variety shows such as "Magandang Tanghali Bayan."   Fr. Tito Caluag II, S.J., Rico's spiritual adviser, recalls a quote from the actor:   "If we can teach young people to work hard, to persevere - to endure the pain - in making something out of themselves and in pursuing a dream, they will surely have character. And when our generation takes over the leadership of this country, imagine, father, we will be a nation of character!"   Source: Rowena Joy A. Sanchez, Manila Bulletin

AJ Perez MMK Episode and Other ABS-CBN Holy Week Programs Set to Inspire Filipinos

ABS-CBN airs some of its heartwarming specials, dramas and Star Cinema movies and best documentaries on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday.   Begin the solemn journey by catching the "Mga Kuwento Sa Lupang Pangako," which was produced by Jesuit Communications Foundation. This special features two documentaries "Sa Mga Yapak Ni Hesus," and "Ang Makabagong Disipilo" that were both shot in Israel.   "Sa Mga Yapak Ni Hesus" follows a group of Filipino pilgrims who come to experience the Holy Land, with the help of their pilgrimage master Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio "Chito" Tagle. Instead of dwelling on the passion and death of a vanquished Christ, Tagle leads them to a deeper understanding of the triumph and joy of the risen Christ, and the impact on their futures.   This special will be narrated by veteran broadcast journalist Cheche Lazaro. "Sa Mga Yapak Ni Hesus" airs Maundy Thursday at 12 p.m.   "Ang Makabagong Disipulo," meanwhile, is an up-close and personal look at the newly installed Archbishop of Manila. This documentary, hosted by ABS-CBN anchor Bernadette Sembrano-Aguinaldo, takes a deeper look into this remarkable man on a mission. It begins as Tagle is about to make his first pilgrimage to the Holy Land a few weeks before his installation. It follows him on this bittersweet journey, fraught with apprehensions and anxieties, and it watches how he comes to Jesus in the very land that He was born in and died. "Ang Makabagong Disipulo" airs Good Friday at 5 p.m.   ABS-CBN will also air some of Catholic Church's significant observations this Lenten Season such as the "Lenten Recollection" on April 5, 3:30 p.m., "Celebration of the Lord's Supper" on April 5, 1:30 p.m. On Good Friday, join the country in hearing Jesus' "7 Last Words" at 3 p.m. that will be followed by the "Veneration of the Cross" at 4 p.m. Also, welcome Easter with a pure heart by participating in the televised "Easter Vigil" which will air on Black Saturday at 11:30 p.m.   Korina Sanchez's miracle-themed episodes aired on "Rated K" will be aired on April 5 and 6 at 6 p.m., and "Kwento ng Buhay Ko" episode, a finalist in New York Festival, on April 7, 6 p.m.   "Krusada" and "Patrol ng Pilipino" documentaries will also be aired. Tina Monzon-Palma delivers compelling stories of people who faced and overcame adversity through faith and prayers on April 5, 10:30 p.m., while Abner Mercado will show us the sad condition of elderly prisoners by introducing us to three inmates from the Correctional Institution for Women.   News reporters Apples Jalandoni and Pia Gutierrez will explore the world of faith healing as they report on the miracles of healing Catholic priests and devotees who patronize them in a special Lenten documentary in "Patrol ng Pilipino" on April 6, 10:30 p.m.   The report features Father Efren 'Momoy' Borromeo, who is said to accurately detect the diseases of people who consult him, much like the MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) machine used in clinical practice.

Jalandoni will attend the "healing Masses" of the well-known Father Joey Faller who sometimes travels to different countries to reach patients who wait for miracles to cure them.   Also to be featured in the documentary are stories of people who have received God's healing grace through Father Momoy and Father Joey, who cure all sorts of illnesses such as cancer, Alzheimer's disease, hiatus hernia, and tumors.   Meanwhile, among the "Maalaala Mo Kaya" episodes to be aired this Lenten season are "Krus" on April 5, 7 p.m., "Tsinelas" starring late actor AJ Perez on April 6, 7 p.m. and "Traysikel" on April 7, 7 p.m.   Star Cinema will also present its inspiring flicks such as "Dubai" on April 5, 10 a.m., "I'll Be There" on April 5, 10:30 p.m., "Ang Tanging Yaman," April 6, 10 a.m., "Sa'yo Lamang," April 6, 8:30 p.m., "Paano Kita Iibigin," April 7, 10 a.m., and "Till My Heartache Ends" on April 7, 8:30 p.m.   On Easter Sunday, Kuya Kim Atienza explores the beliefs, traditions, and miracles that surround ordinary people who have done extraordinary works that have paved their way to sainthood.   Get to know the different saints, from St. Francis of Assisi who can talk to and tame animals to St. Maria Gorretti, the youngest saint at 12 years old, and to St. Jude, the patron saint of lost causes.   Atienza also gets to interview a half-Filipino, half-Lebanese professor from the University of the Philippines who is related to a saint from Lebanon.   He will also find out the reasons behind some of the traditions that surround our saints such as prayer, touch and even the offering of eggs.   "Matanglawin" airs on April 8, 9:30 a.m., on ABS-CBN.  Share By JED || Full Story @ Showbiznest

Sam in no rush to do mature roles

Sam Concepcion may have had his first kiss–on screen, with “I Do Bidoo Bidoo” leading lady Tippy Dos Santos. But he is in no rush to jump into more mature roles and project a sexier image.

“After that first take, it just dawned on me that there’s no turning back now. (But) we have to wait for that right project. Kasi I don’t want to jump into something and do mature roles kaagad. I think it’s just timely and age-appropriate,” he said in an interview at the launch of his newest endorsement, ABE College, on Monday, April 1.

Although Sam and Tippy play sweethearts in “I Do Bidoo Bidoo,” the two are good friends in real life.

Sam Concepcion

“We’ve known each other for a while and we had to do these scenes. In my head, this would be kind of weird because she’s my friend and we had to deliver a scene wherein the people would believe that we really are together as lovers. But after the first take (for the kissing scene), it wasn’t so bad.” Sam relates.

Sam admits he and Tippy never dated off-screen. But has the thought of pursuing her cross his mind?

“I don’t know. Maybe it did. Maybe it didn’t. We’ve known each other for so long,” Sam replied.

New album, new image

As for his music, Sam explains why he wants to leave his teenybopper image behind and opt for a “more mature sound.”

This, he will show in his new album, where Sam will sport a new image.

“It’s going to differentiate me from my previous self. One of the challenges of starting young is you get stuck there. In a way, I guess, it’s some sort of reinvention. I’m going for a more mature sound,” the voice behind “Forever Young” says.

He feels blessed being able to juggle his time between his two passions: acting and music.

“It’s great na I’m given projects where I can showcase both. I get to sing and I get to act. I’m not sure if I love one more than the other, I guess they go hand in hand,” he said.

Sam shared that he enjoyed working with Eugene Domingo, Gary Valenciano, Zsa Zsa Padilla, and Ogie Alcasid in “I Do Bidoo Bidoo.”

Eugene, in particular, was very helpful.

“She really helps me give something to a scene. It’s hard if you’re detached with the person you’re in the scene with. It makes it harder for you to act but she made it comfortable for me,” reveals Sam

“Sir Ogie (Alcasid) is also is a joy to work with,” Sam adds.

OMG! Exclusive - Vicki after Hayden: I’m praying for strength

Months after they broke up, memories of former boyfriend Hayden Kho still haunt Dra. Vicki Belo. She still misses him a lot and is surprised why she’s fine “when I thought I would be a lot worse than I am.”

Vicki recalls how devastated she felt after the break-up (she tweeted that she was letting Hayden date Nancy Castiglione openly).

“I said, 'God, take me na. I’ve done a lot already',” Vicki relates.

Despite everything, Vicki only has good words for Hayden. She’s proud of what he has made of himself now that he is slowly weaning himself away from her.

“He’s training with Ana Valdes-Lim, a graduate of Juilliard (School of Music in New York). He acts so well. Ang dami na niyang pinaghuhugutan. He is now being managed by Carlo (Orosa’s) group (Stages),”relates Vicki.

Vicki Belo

The last time they saw each other, her ex told Vicki outright that he doesn’t want any help from her, something which impressed her all the more.

Vicki admits not understanding why, but she knows her world will crumble if she sees Hayden with his girlfriend or learns that he will get married one day.

“It will hurt me very much,” she admits.

But the doctor to the stars realizes that it’s over, and she has to move on.

“I’m praying for strength. I’m trying to be self-sufficient,”she reveals.

Lessons

Vicki owns up to mistakes she inadvertently made because she let her head rule over her heart.

“I break up with someone, then I go to the next one so I won’t get hurt,” she admits.

Vicki also thinks her tendency to mother her boyfriend has led to the breakup of her relationships and the beginning of many heart aches.

“I can never ever be the mother of my boyfriend,” she says

And since she has been so supportive, so predictable, and, as she herself relates, boring, Vicki wants to change her ways the next time around.

“I want to be the princess next time,” she declares. “When I was younger, I was the princess. All the guys loved me so much. Then I changed. I became mabait. Marriage (to Atom Henares, with whom she is divorced) changed me. I’ve been so patient, so kind, so everything because I wanted to make it work. But it didn’t.”

Guys, she concluded, “want to have a hard time.” They want challenge.

So Vicki now wants to bring out the Bella Swan (of "Twilight" fame) out in her, the one with the fangs hiding beneath the sweet, smiling face.

“I even bought a book called 'Finding the Bitch in You’ because I’m tired of playing games.”

She just wants to be herself, because “it’s so nice to be with someone you can be yourself with, no pretensions, since the whole day you have to make PR.”

She adds wistfully, “I hope there will be someone who will appreciate me. I’m praying for someone who can provide companionship.”

Vicki’s eyes twinkle when she asks the man of her dreams, “Where are you? I hope you’re reading this and you come to get me.”

Coping tactics

Meanwhile, Vicki goes out with daughter Cristalle, her boyfriend and their friends. Sometimes, Atom would join them.

“Cristalle’s barkada invites me to their parties. I look like a fool,” she sighs.

But Vicki doesn’t want the setup to last forever.

“I can’t be like this for a long time. I have to find my life.”

She has not dismissed the possibility of reconciling with Atom, father of Cristalle and her son Quark Henares.

“He’s one person who makes me feel that I’m in the safest place. He’s older than me. He babies Cristalle and me.”

Now that they’re seeing each other again like one happy family, Vicki says she and the now-single Atom struck a deal.

“If he doesn’t have anyone by the time he’s 70, we’ll reconcile. So may fallback position ako.”

With or without a fallback position, one thing’s sure: Vicki will always want to love and be loved in return. Let’s just hope it will be for keeps the next time around.

Ivan Dorschner learns to speak Filipino

Former Pinoy Big Brother housemate Ivan Dorschner, also known as the guy Katy Perry kissed on stage during her show in Manila, wants to learn Filipino so he can have more TV and film projects.

His one big dream is to be successful in film or TV and to get “invited to the Oscars.”

“Iyan po talaga ang passion ko. Nagworkshop ako sa States, after ng first lesson pa lang, parang hindi na ako babalik sa dati kong perspective pagdating sa film,” Ivan said in an interview at the mini-press conference of his newest endorsement, ABE College, together with Sam Concepcion, on Monday, April 2.

The “Good Vibes” actor added, “After the first lesson, I want to get invited to the Oscars for something that I did, whether in front of the camera or behind it. Basta I get the invitation addressed to me.”

Ivan Dorschner

The English-speaking guy people saw in PBB can now speak Filipino with confidence. He answered the English questions posed at him during the interview mostly in Filipino. This proved that he learned a lot from his Tagalog lessons and casual conversations with taxi drivers.

“Once a week and parang nagiging lesson ko ay nag-uusap lang kami ng teacher ko ng Tagalog. Wala masyadyong like, 'Basahin mo ito, construct ang sentence ng ganito.' Parang dumating na kami sa punto na scripts, may emotions na,” he shared.

Are there more offers, now that he can converse in Filipino?

“Actually, hindi siya biglaan kasi ang alam ng mga directors and producers na hindi ako masyadong nagta-Tagalog paglabas ng PBB. Iyon ang inaalala nila,” Ivan replied.

Ivan is currently visible in TV guestings and commercials, hosting gigs, and out-of-town shows. He is also part of the upcoming Star Cinema movie “The Reunion.”

He recently played Prince Oswald in the Gantimpala Theater production of “Si Snow White at Pitong Dwarf.

Ivan is also open to doing independent films.

Not dating

He is not dating anyone and would rather focus on his career.

“Yes (career first before having a girlfriend), kasi noong huli kong uwi sa States, bago ako umalis sabi ko sa mom ko, ‘If this is my year, then I’m coming back.’ What happened was, I got endorsements.”

Ivan wants to work with Sarah Geronimo, Baron Geisler and John Lloyd Cruz.

“Baron Geisler, I’ve heard a lot of good things about him. John Lloyd Cruz, he’s really good,” Ivan explained.

Conservative mom

The kiss from Katy Perry was unforgettable, but Ivan couldn’t help but think of his mom after the incident.

“Mom. Yes, she is very conservative. Pwede siyang maging madre ng buong Pilipinas,” Ivan said in jest, when asked of his thoughts after getting a kiss from Katy.

Ivan reenacted the conversation he had with his mom.

“It’s been two days and wala pang tawag sa akin ang mom ko. When my mom called, the first thing I heard was, 'Anak… what happened? Why your shirt (Ivan was shirtless on stage)?' I said, 'Mom I love you and I’m sorry'," Ivan shared.

Ivan added that he was raised in a very Filipino way.

Kylie: We’re happy if BB is happy

Kylie Padilla said their family supports BB Gandanghari, her father Robin Padilla’s sibling.

In an interview with the press last March 21, Robin said he still finds it hard to accept his brother’s new identity–that of BB Gandanghari–now that he’s back in the country after staying in the US for a few years.

But according to Kylie, her father is just getting used to BB.

“Tanggap naman ni Papa, kaso hindi siya yung talagang… may ano pa rin, hindi siya sanay. Pero tanggap naman niya basta masaya yung tita ko, si tita BB. Kasi lumalabas naman lahat kami e, na magkasama,” she said in an interview with the press.

Kylie Padilla

Kylie also said that the family already discussed BB’s gender preference a couple of years ago.

“Nag-agree naman kami na basta masaya si Tita BB, magiging masaya na rin po kami,” the 19-year-old actress said.

She added, “But I don't think I have the right to tell my dad (what to do) kasi usapang magkapatid yan, e.”

‘Magkaibigan pa rin’

Kylie is yet to have the opportunity to bond with her aunt since “she’s getting together with her other friends muna, kasi ang tagal niyang nawala.” But the young star attended the family’s party for BB last March 31. This was why she wasn’t able to attend Aljur Abrenica’s birthday party in Batangas City.
As for the status of her relationship with Aljur, Kylie said, “Ganun pa rin. Magkaibigan pa rin. Walang pagbabago.” She gave Aljur a pair of Ray-Ban shades for his 22nd birthday.

The lead star of “The Good Daughter” said she wants to spend the Holy Week in Baguio.

“Just to relax. Papasyal lang,” Kylie said.

“Gusto ko munang mapag-isa, mag-isip, magpahinga, kasi the show, I’m really getting involved in the show, nakakapagod din,” she added. “Para matahimik lang. Kailangan paminsan yun, e. Pahinga talaga.”

“The Good Daughter” airs weekdays on GMA-7’s Afternoon Prime.
