Cinema One Ready for the 35th Gawad Urian

Cinema One Ready for the 35th Gawad Urian

After Cinema One’s success in producing last year’s prestigious awards night, the Philippines’ no. 1 cable channel now prepares for the 35th Gawad Urian, whose awards night will be held June 14 (Thursday) at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo.

Grace Javier-Alfonso, chair of the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino (MPP), which hands out the Gawad Urian, said: “We are pleased to collaborate with Cinema One once again, a pioneer in digital cinema that retains the free spirit and cutting edge in today’s national cinema.”

Some of the memorable recipients of the Gawad Urian Best Picture since the Manunuri was founded in 1976 were Eddie Romero’s “Ganito Kami Noon, Paano Kayo Ngayon?” Lino Brocka’s “Jaguar” and “Bayan Ko, Kapit sa Patalim,” Ismael Bernal’s “City After Dark/Manila By Night,” Mike de Leon’s “Kisapmata,” Lav Diaz’s “Batang West Side,” Dante Mendoza’s “Tirador,” “Serbis,” and “Kinatay,” and last year’s “Ang Damgo Ni Eleuteria” by Remton Siega Zuasola.

The Urian’s Natatanging Aktor ng Dekada Award has also been given to the paramount actors of every decade. Last year, Gina Pareño, Cherry Pie Picache and Coco Martin were honored with the Dekada award for their accomplishments in the first decade of the century. In the ‘80s, they went to Vilma Santos, Nora Aunor, Gina Alajar and Philip Salvador. Nora and Vilma again received the award in the ‘90s with Richard Gomez.

This year’s Gawad Urian is again a celebration of regional, multicultural, multilingual cinema that highlighted Philippine Cinema last year. This is a cutting edge attempt to encourage and support the indie spirit.

The Natatanging Gawad Urian will be given this year to an artist in the film industry for his/her exemplary contribution to the development of fiilmmaking in the country. Previous recipients of this special award were National Artists Fernando Poe, Jr., Gerardo de Leon, Lamberto Avellana, and Eddie Romero, Anita Linda, Rosa Rosal, Gloria Romero, Nida Blanca, Dolphy, Eddie Garcia, Pancho Magalona, Mona Lisa, and creative artists like cinematographers, editors, and scriptwriters. The name of this year’s awardee will be revealed soon.

Also, this year’s venue—the CCP main theatre or Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo—is most appropriate for the prestigious and historic Gawad Urian show. The CCP was built in 1966 to promote and preserve Filipino arts and culture. The main theater is the largest performance venue inside the CCP and can accommodate up to 1,853 people. The hall was built to meet sound requirements of various types of presentations like opera and orchestra performances without further amplification.

Meanwhile, Cinema One’s mounting of last year’s Gawad Urian was remarkable as it presented the country’s internationally acclaimed singer Lea Salonga and many others.

The Gawad Urian is given annually since 1977. Its objectives are “to examine Filipino films, bolster the interest of the masses and the Philippine film industry, study and celebrate the achievement that will help define the good Filipino film, and cultivate the knowledge and skills that the film medium was designed for, which is to be a medium of communication and expression of our culture according to the standards and conditions of filmmaking in our country.”

Stay tuned to Cinema One for the latest updates on the 35th Gawad Urian. Cinema One is available on SkyCable Gold, SkyCable Silver and other quality cable operators nationwide. For more information, logon to http://www.facebook.com/Cinema1channel.

How the Amalia Fuentes, Annabelle Rama feud started

The feud between Amalia Fuentes and Annabelle Rama didn't just start because 1969 Ms. Universe Gloria Diaz gave her cellphone to Annabelle’s husband Eddie Gutierrez to talk to Amalia while Annabelle was having dinner with him in a restaurant. It could have been sparked last year when Hollywood icon Elizabeth Taylor died.

According to Amalia, it could have started when her interview with columnist and Philippine Star Entertainment Editor Ricky Lo wrote an article on the parallelism of her life with Elizabeth Taylor. The question asked she remembered was, "What is her life's greatest tragedy?"

"Because si Elizabeth Taylor maraming tragedy in life di ba? So at my age I can already answer that. Ang sabi ko the greatest tragedy of my life was that I never got to marry the man that I love. It was an innocent answer and I thought it would spice-up the interview. My God, she took it like si Eddie Gutierrez yun! I will never mention Eddie Gutierrez's name because he will never be the greatest tragedy of my life," she explained.

Amalia Fuentes (Contributed photo) and Annabelle Rama

She said that she then noticed that Annabelle and Eddie had articles written and published about their so-called "fairytale love story" and that Eddie was Annabelle's first love. What she didn't like though was her name being dragged to their story especially depicting her as a "former movie queen" who's still in love with Eddie.

"Maganda raw buhay niya na meron daw isang ageing superstar na who's very much in love with her husband. I don't know where she got that idea and she kept on saying na inggit lang daw ako. How can she be that crazy," questioned Amalia.

She stressed that unlike Annabelle, she doesn't have problems in terms of finances, with her children and her income.

"Definitely I have a better life than her. Nobody will believe na naiinggit ako sa kanya. There's nothing to be inggit about her. Her job as a talent manager? How can she sleep at night? What kind of life can I exchange for her? I'm enjoying my life, I finished school and I'm enjoying my travels," shared Amalia.

It was with this regard that she looked for Eddie's number to ask him to stop his wife from spreading rumors about them, which is not true she said.

"I mean, can't he stop the mouth of his wife? People gave me Eddie's number but he didn’t answer everytime I called him. All I wanted was to contain the fight. Huwag ng humaba ng ganito kasi nakakahiyang kaaway si Annabelle. It's like ako ang bababa, hindi ko siya ka-level mentally, physically and everything," she said.

As for Eddie, she said that he would never consider him for anything but a friend.

"But if he doesn't do anything to stop that fantasy, he is just guilty as Annabelle. But he is a weakling. Kaya ang galit ko is more centered kay Eddie because why can't he control his wife? And why can't he be honest enough to correct the situation because he knows there's no such thing," Amalia reacted.

In retaliation to the name-calling of Annabelle Rama, Amalia declared, "Ito i-quote mo ako, "Eddie is nothing but an ageing out of work actor. Us being both 71 years old actors. So she accept that. Ako I'm an ageing movie queen but I don't have to work for my food, while Eddie has to be ano of Annabelle Rama for his food, for his lodging, for his ano. Ako I don't have to."

She stressed too that she's enjoying her comfort zone - savings, travels, homes here and abroad and not having to work for a living.

"Doesn't she have enough enemies? You know she texted me pa na "paglalaruan kita sa Twitter kasi I have 45 accounts sa Twitter at FB. Imagine what kind of a person is that? Anong purpose ng mga ginagawa niya? Doesn't she have enough problems with her children?" she reacted.

The question now is how and when will their feud end.

Warner Bros. Unveils Footage of “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” Shot with New Technology

Warner Bros. Unveils Footage of “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” Shot with New Technology

Warner Bros. Pictures screened approximately 10 minutes of never-before-seen footage from New Line Cinema and MGM’s upcoming epic “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” which showcased the filmmaking innovation of 48 frames-per-second (fps), doubling the typical frame rate of 24 fps. The footage was part of the studio’s presentation at CinemaCon, the official convention of the National Association of Theatre Owners (NATO).

The film, slated for worldwide release beginning December 14, 2012, is the first major motion picture to be made using this state-of-the art high-frame-rate technology.

The footage was introduced via a taped greeting from director Peter Jackson, who gave a bit of history as to how 24 fps became the industry standard and why today’s technology allows for higher frame rates. He also explained that 48 fps is actually closer to the way the human eye views the world. Jackson offered, “As a filmmaker, I always want to create a strong sense of reality, to allow the audience to lose themselves in whatever the cinematic story is that I’m presenting. Shooting and projecting at 48 fps gives you the illusion that a hole has been cut in the wall of the cinema, and you’re watching the story unfold with a heightened sense of reality. It’s terrific for 3D; I’ve looked at the 48 fps dailies for ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’ in 3D for over a year now, and with the reduction in strobing and flicker, it is a much more gentle experience on your eyes. 48 fps is not just limited to 3D. A film shot in 48 fps looks fantastic when projected in 2D, and converts well to 24 fps as well.”

Dan Fellman, Warner Bros. Pictures President, Domestic Distribution, stated, “24 fps has been the standard in our industry for the last 80 years, so this is an exciting breakthrough. It’s no surprise that Peter Jackson, with his commitment to innovation, is the first director to utilize 48 fps on a grand scale. It’s equally gratifying to me to see the exhibition community embrace this advancement.

Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, Warner Bros. Pictures President, International Distribution, added, “We’re thrilled to be arm-in-arm with Peter Jackson and the exhibition community in exploring the possibilities of high-frame-rate filmmaking. The powerful combination of enduring storytelling and spectacular visuals will offer an exciting new movie-going experience to audiences around the world.”

From Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson comes “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” the first of two films adapting the enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien. The adventure follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield. “Men in Black 3” Journeys Back to the Past

“Men in Black 3” Journeys Back to the Past

It has been ten years since the Men in Black were last seen protecting the Earth from the scum of the universe, and since then, there has been rampant speculation about a third film. But Will Smith says that it was always a given that there would be a third film. “We came to a point where we all felt that we had a fresh and compelling story that took the audience to a time and place they had not seen in this franchise,” says Smith.

In Columbia Pictures' highly anticipated action adventure comedy “Men in Black 3,” Agents J (Smith) and K (Tommy Lee Jones) are back... in time. J has seen some inexplicable things in his 15 years with the Men in Black, but nothing, not even aliens, perplexes him as much as his wry, reticent partner. But when K’s life and the fate of the planet are put at stake, Agent J will have to travel back in time to put things right. J discovers that there are secrets to the universe that K never told him -- secrets that will reveal themselves as he teams up with the young Agent K (Josh Brolin) to save his partner, the agency, and the future of humankind.

The story of “Men In Black 3” takes the filmmakers back – back to the characters’ origins, back to the key moments of their relationship, to focus on the key elements that have kept them at arms’ length from each other for 15 years – and looked for ways to resolve the conflict. The answer came in sending Agent J back – back in time.

We wanted the movie to be both familiar and different,” says Barry Sonnenfeld, who has taken the helm of all three “Men in Black” films. “What’s familiar is the characters and premise of the Men in Black and who they are. We wanted to bring Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones back together again. But we also wanted something new and inventive, and that came in the time travel element.

At the beginning of the movie, J and K are still partners – but they haven’t learned much about each other in all their time together,” says producer Walter F. Parkes. “In fact, at the very beginning of the story, the character of Zed has recently died and K gives a eulogy that provides no information whatsoever about him. This despite the fact that Zed was supposedly his best friend for 45 years. It makes J think, after all these years, what do I really know about the guy sitting next to me? That is the foundation for our story, and it coincides with the escape of an alien, Boris the Animal, that K put away 40 years earlier, in 1969 – and he’s coming back for some kind of payback on K.”

Some kind of payback, indeed: Boris jumps back in time to 1969 and kills K. No one in 2012 has any memory that K wasn’t murdered 40 years earlier – no one except J, who is wondering what happened to his partner. To save K, J follows Boris back into the past – and as he does, he sees an opportunity to learn more about his partner. “J sees saving K as a great opportunity to learn secrets about K – he thinks he’ll find out why K is so grumpy and reserved,” says Sonnenfeld. “But as it turns out, the young Agent K is open, friendly, and interesting.”

Of course, even as the movie explores the characters’ relationships, it isn’t a heavy drama. It’s Men In Black, and that meant it would deliver trippy Rick Baker aliens, cool gadgets, and big laughs. All of that adds up to an irresistible tone that isn’t quite like any other film. Sonnenfeld says that the key to the tone – the only way to make the movie really funny – is for everyone to play it entirely straight. “I want the situations to be funny, but the performances to be real, so I don’t want the actors trying to be funny,” he explains. “I don’t want the composer to think ‘comedy,’ because then the music will be comedy music. I don’t even want the cinematographer or the lab that develops the film to think it’s a comedy, because the next thing I know, it’ll look too bright. If I can surround the absurd situation with something real, it’ll be a great comedy.”

Opening across the Philippines on May 23 in 3D and regular theaters, “Men in Black 3” will be distributed by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International.
