Mike & Dave Need Wedding Dates Movie Review: Vulgar, Crass, Dumb & Extremely Silly

'MIKE AND DAVE NEED WEDDING DATES' is strictly for those who go for raunchy sex comedies that are full of obscene language, outrageous profanity, gratuitous frontal nudity and shameless, tasteless jokes. If you like the vulgar and cringe-inducing hilarity of "American Pie", "The Hangover" and "Porky's" (all blockbusters to prove there's a huge market for this kind of comedy), then you'd enjoy "Mike and Dave", which is said to be based on a true story. Since comedies about weddings are hits, like "Bridesmaids", "The Hangover" franchise, "Wedding Crashers", this one also involves a wedding.

Mike (Adam Devine) and Dave Stangle (Zac Efron) are brothers who are notorious for ruining their family events because of their brainless disastrous shenanigans. For the wedding of their sister Jeanie (Sugar Lyn Beard) to be held in Hawaii, their parents require them to bring nice girls as wedding dates, in the hope that these girls would help curb their destructive tendencies and control any irresponsible behavior that might help wreck the wedding.

They interview various girls but no one satisfied them, until they meet two trashy girls who prove to be their match in messing things up. Tatiana (Aubrey Plaza of "The To Do List") is the trashier of the two. Alice (Anna Kendrick) is still reeling after her fiance dumped her on their wedding day right in front of the altar saying "I don't" instead of the expected "I do".

The duo sees the brothers conducting their search for wedding dates on a TV talk show and they then cook up a plan to meet the guys "by accident" in front of a bar. You'd think that sparks would fly when they meet Mike and Dave as they are their female counterparts but, sorry, nothing of the sort happens. We're supposed to find these characters quite lovable but the truth is they're all reprehensible idiots. The girls present a fake version of themselves and it works. But once they get to Hawaii for the wedding, their true horrible nature comes into the surface.

They all do all the craziest, most repulsive things, but in the end, they suddenly become soft, tone down their brash acts and become more mature grown ups. What's amazing about Zac is he seems to be bent on destroying the clean cut wholesome pretty boy persona Disney cultivated for him in "High School Musical" to venture into things more dark and offensive.

Devine is so off putting as the buffoonish louder brother, overacting all over the place and always making not so funny faces. Anna Kendrick fails to persuade that she can be a stupid girl and it's too bad for her that Zac looks prettier than her. Aubrey Plaza is the only who fits her character comfortably and it's only because she seems to be truly obnoxious even off cam.

The movie presents more shocking sight gags, like the massage scene that the naked bride gets from an equally naked Indian masseur. Then there's also the sauna scene involving Aubrey giving pleasure to Mike and Dave's lesbian cousin and the stable scene where the drugged bride and Anna strip to let the horses out.

Then, in the end credits, there's the usual blooper outtakes and, in all honest, we didn't find them funny at all but ridiculous. The movie is the directorial debut of Jake Szymanski, who used to direct portions of "Saturday Night Live". Just like other directors who are so focused on coming up with outrageous jokes, he has lost sight of what's truly funny. It's just crass, dumb, extremely silly, but without the accompanying laughs. In other words, this movie is an epic failure, no doubt it was big flop in the U.S. and even more so locally. When we watched it in a mall theatre, there were only just about ten of us inside the moviehouse.

Nathalie Hart, Former Princess Snell, Disrobes In Her Launching Sex Drama, 'Siphayo', Directed By Joel Lamangan

NATHALIE HART used to be known as Princess Snell when she was with ABS-CBN's Star Magic then she later joined GMA's Starstruck when was 17 years old. She also joined "Survivor Philippines" and played supporting roles in soaps like "My Beloved", "Kasalanan Bang Ibigin Ka", "Captain Barbell", "Yesterday's Bride", "Makapiling Kang Muli", etc.

She then got Leo Dominguez as her manager and changed her name to Nathalie Hart. She did several movies for Regal like "Dilim" and "Somebody to Love". Now, she agrees to go sexy in BG Productions' "Siphayo", an erotic drama that aims to revive the bold and titillating film genre of the Seiko Films era. How far did she go in the movie?

"I have hot love scenes with Luis Alandy, Joem Bascon and Allan Paule," she says. "And yes, I showed some skin, actually, a lot of skin."

What convinced her to accept such a provocative role? "I read the script by Eric Ramos and it's very good. Then napakagaling ng director, si Joel Lamangan, na respetado sa industriya at gusto ko talagang makatrabaho, so I accepted it. Pero kung hindi si Direk Joel, hindi ko tatanggapin."

She admits doing the sex scenes were quite a torture for her. "Sobra akong kinakabahan sa set kasi first time ko gumawa ng love scenes. Noong unang eksenang makikipagromansa ako, hindi ko nakontrol ang emotions ko, nag-iiyak ako at nagkulong sa CR. Tinalakan ako ni direk, hindi raw siya porn director. So I just needed to calm myself at naging okay na ako."

So, which of her three leading men (Luis Alandy, Joem Bascon and Allan Paule) did she enjoy the most? "Para walang problema, I'll just say nag-enjoy ako sa kanilang lahat. Pero hindi naman ako talaga nag-enjoy na hinahalikan nila ako at hinahawakan nila ang katawan ko. Paano ka naman mage-enjoy or mate-turn on sa ganun e ang daming ibang tao sa set, may mga ilaw, kamera? How can you get carried away with that? So ginawa ko na lang ang trabaho ko para matapos na.

Nakatulong sa akin si Maria Isabel Lopez, who plays the wife of Allan Paule, kasi she gave me advice. Iba yung may kausap kang aktres na nakagawa ng ganito kasi she understands my situation. She told me you should look at the bright side and you're lucky kasi nag-start ka muna sa sweet roles. E, siya raw, first movie niya, sumabak agad siya sa sexy. E, ako, ang ganda ng material ng 'Siphayo' at si Joel Lamangan pa ang director, so that makes a lot of difference. I really had to prepare myself physically, mentally and emotionally. Kasi making love with three different guys is not an easy thing to do. But now that we've finished it, I can say I'm proud of the movie, so watch it when opens in theatres on October 5."

Aside from "Siphayo", Nathalie is in three other new movies. She plays Joseph Marco's first girlfriend in Regal's romantic-comedy "My Rebound Girl" that opens on September 18 and she has also completed "Balatkayo" with Polo Ravales and "Tisay", an entry in Cinema One Filmfest in November.

Asa Butterfield, a reluctant young hero in "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children"

Asa Butterfield, known for his notable performance in “Hugo” that earned him Critics’ Choice Award nomination for Best Young Actor and was nominated for 11 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, stars in Tim Burton’s latest adaptation of the worldwide bestselling children’s book by Ransom Riggs with the same title, “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children,” as a reluctant young hero who has yet to discover and harness his powerful peculiarity.

asa buttefield in MISS PEREGRINE'S HOME FOR PECULIAR CHILDREN

“Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children” is the story of a family of outcasts – children who, because of their gifts, have to live outside of society – a love story with time travel, monsters and a powerful message at its heart that we should all be who we want to be. What makes the young Peculiars different is also what makes them able, strong and special. Miss Peregrine’s (Eva Green) home provides a safe haven from the outside world, which cannot comprehend or deal with the Peculiars’ special abilities. It’s also a refuge from their powerful enemies.

Each child has a unique peculiarity, including levitation, fire-manipulation and super-strength. The Peculiars’ capabilities are not limitless, and these young people are bound by most of the things non-Peculiars are. The new arrival at Miss Peregrine’s Home is Jake (Butterfield), the hero of our story. An outcast who eventually finds acceptance among the Peculiars, Jake is a typical American teen with the attending awkwardness. He feels that he doesn’t fit in, and doesn’t seem to be able to connect with anyone except his grandfather, whose death sets him on a journey of discovery.

Asa Butterfield describes his character as “living an ordinary life and thinks he will never make a difference in the world. When his beloved granddad Abe dies mysteriously, Jake travels to Wales with his father to find out about Abe’s past—and to find out if the special Home and its residents, which Abe had told Jake many stories about, really exist.”

Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children

Jake could never have suspected what was in store for him there. “What really stood out for me was how surreal everything was that was surrounding him,” Butterfield explains. “He comes from something that’s totally ordinary to joining something insanely different from what he’s used to. At Miss Peregrine’s Home, Jake must let go of everything he knows—or thinks he knows—and leave normal life behind.”

It’s a tremendous opportunity and challenge for Jake, and not unlike those many of us encounter in the everyday world. Although we don’t face the kind of extraordinary challenges and choices Jake has with the Peculiars, the bigger picture, says Butterfield, is all about “taking that next big step.”

Burton says Butterfield was right for the role because the young actor “has a special kind of sensitivity, and he’s a thinker. You could easily envision Asa being a Peculiar. He brings gravity to the role, like he’s always discovering something. Asa really conveys that Jake is going through what a lot of teens experience.

“Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children” also stars Eva Green, Judi Dench, Terence Stamp, Samuel L. Jackson with up and coming young stars Asa Butterfield, Ella Purnell, Finlay MacMillan, Lauren McCrostie, Pixie Davies, Georgia Pemberton, Raffiella Chapman, Milo Parker, Hayden Keeler-Stone, Cameron King and Thomas and Joseph Odwell.

Come home to the cinemas (2D and 3D) and experience a visual spectacle when “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children” opens September 28 nationwide from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.

GMA7's newest action-packed series Alyas Robin Hood made its pilot telecast last night, Monday, September 19. Actor Dingdong Dantes plays the title role with Megan Young and Andrea Torres as his leading ladies.

A few weeks ago, the series became controversial for allegedly copying the US TV series "Arrow". It made more noise when Stephen Amell, lead star of Arrow, posted his reaction in social media upon seeing the trailer of Alyas Robin Hood. But GMA's headwriter denied it copied the storyline of the US series.

Directed by Dominic Zapata, the series also stars Cherie Gil, Sid Lucero, Paolo Contis, Gary Estrada, Rey PJ Abellana, Ces Quesada, Toby Alejar, and Jacklyn Jose.
