Shamcey on why beauty pageants are still relevant

Filipinos are making waves in the international beauty pageant scene with the recent victories of 2011 Miss World-Philippines Gwendolyn Ruais and 2010 Miss Universe-Philippines Ma. Venus Raj. But with the upcoming 2012 Bb. Pilipinas pageant this April 15, there are some naysayers who question if beauty pageants are still relevant in this day and age.

For 2011 Miss Universe fourth placer Shamcey Supsup, an international beauty pageant is relevant because it allows someone to represent the country in a good light.

“Sa akin, marami rin akong nasabi about the Philippines. They're all excited and they said they wanted to come and explore the Philippines,” she said in an interview with Yahoo! Philippines OMG!

Shamcey Supsup

Shamcey feels the negative notions attached to beauty pageants are mere stereotypes people still cannot let go of.

“For example, tayo, ang tingin natin sa politics, it's all corruption. But not naman everyone is. But it's the mindset,” she explained. “Just like with beauty pageants. Ganun ang tingin ng tao but not everyone is like that. For example, with politics, a lot of good people don't want to enter anymore because that's how people see it.

She added, “Kaya sa beauty pageants, a lot of beautiful and intelligent women don't want to join because people see that as that.”

If people look closely, Shamcey said they’ll see a lot of the beauty pageant contestants don’t conform to the usual stereotype of a beauty queen.

“Na-stereotype lang. Masyado lang na-generalize. Pero when you get know a lot of these girls, ma-aano ka, masusurprise ka,” she said.

Road to dreams

On a personal level, her Miss Universe journey allowed Shamcey to achieve her dreams at a much faster pace than she expected.

She said, “When I first joined, I was hesistant. Will it slow down my career as an architect? Will I be stagnant? Will I be left behind by my friends? Kumbaga, I said, ano kaya gagawin ko sa buhay ko? A lot of them are exploring, a lot of them are trying to challenge themselves. Trying to reach their dreams. So ano kaya yung akin?”

“And then I entered Binibining Pilipinas nga. I was really hesitant. Feeling ko I will be left behind by my friends. But you know what? Through the pageant na hindi ko naman na-plano, all of my other dreams are following. Mas fast-paced pa.”

“I didn't know I'll be able to do it and it's because I joined the pageant.”

The pageant also made people look at Shamcey beyond her beauty.

“Now people are listening to my opinions, to my ideas. Ang dami ko kasing ideas, ang dami kong gustong i-share,” she said.

Inspiring young Filipinos is also one of the most fulfilling parts of being a beauty queen, Shamcey added.

“Lalo na sa mga bata. Nakakatuwa. Sa mga letters or messages, sinasabi nila, 'Ate, mag-aaral na akong mabuti kasi gusto ko maging katulad mo' or 'Ate, uunahin ko ang pag-aaral, magtatapos talaga ako.' Nakakatuwa. Parang, kahit papaano, may mga naiipluwensyahan ka in a good way,” she said.

The Bb. Pilipinas 2012 coronation night will be aired live on ABS-CBN on April 15. A primer will be aired on ABS-CBN’s Sunday Best on April 8.

Marvin Agustin and his greatest life lessons

Marvin Agustin is one of the busiest men in showbiz—and not only because of his acting. Besides his regular acting gigs, the 33–year-old actor owns several restaurant chains and a concert production company. So how does Marvin manage to find time to do all the things that he does?

“It’s passion for me, so it’s not really (about) finding time,” Marvin told Yahoo! Philippines OMG! and other members of the press.

In fact, for Marvin, being passionate is one of the greatest lessons in life that he has learned as a successful actor and businessman.

Marvin Agustin

“Be passionate, always, in anything. Never waste your time,” he shared. “Passion and love for what you’re doing, that will bring you somewhere.”

Marvin has also learned that the relationships he has built with people are more important than money and fame.

“Yung money and fame, pwedeng mawala e. But relationships with people, with your friends, and with your family, it’s long-lasting,” he said.

Marvin further shared, “Narealize ko kasi, bata kami wala kaming pera. Nagkaroon kami ng pera, may problema pa rin. Problems will always be there. You just have to face them and manage them and handle them. But if you have good relationships with people, that would matter in your life.”

So far so good

And Marvin is clearly doing what he preaches, considering what he has accomplished last year. He did three movies in 2011: the Metro Manila Film Festival entry “Enteng ng Ina Mo” topbilled by Vic Sotto and Ai-Ai delas Alas, “Ikaw ang Pag-ibig" where he played a priest, and “The Road,” a suspense thriller slated for international release. He also did the cooking reality show “Kitchen Superstars” for GMA-7.

As a concert producer, he did five concerts under Futuretainment Inc. last year.

“So far, so good, but right now pahinga muna ako sa pagpoproduce ng foreign act concerts. Pinagaaralan pa namin kung ano isusunod namin," Marvin said.

But this doesn’t mean his company will be in a complete standstill; Futuretainment is co-producing TV5’s upcoming reality singing show “Kanta Pilipinas.”

As for his television career, Marvin is currently not signed up to any of the three networks.

“I’m friends with all e, so, I’d like to work with all networks. I can work with all naman. Even without a contract, if they need me, I’d do any of their shows. I’m more than willing,” he said.

Marvin added, “I’ll do a soap (opera) soon. I just can’t announce which channel.”

Make people laugh

And on the big screen, Marvin is out to prove his versatility again, this time in the comedy department. He stars in “Moron 5 and the Crying Lady," a collaboration between Viva Films and MVP Productions.

"Dito, Bombay na nagpa-five-six ang role ko," Marvin said. For authenticity of his role, he sports a beard and a turban. "Nakakatuwa ang pelikulang ito, matatawa talaga ang mga manonood."

He adds: "We are five friends in the story, limang dim-witted guys (played by Luis Manzano, Billy Crawford, DJ Durano, Martin Escudero and himself) na pinagbintangan ng isang babae (played by John Lapus) na pumatay sa tatay niya, kaya nakulong kami sa bilangguan. But we have to bolt jail para malinis ang pangalan namin, at para alamin kung bakit galit na galit sa amin ang babaeng ito.”

“Moron 5 and the Crying Lady," directed by Wenn V. Deramas and written by Mel del Rosario, is showing in theaters nationwide.

Does Rocco feel pressured because of awards?

Rocco Nacino recently scored a double victory for his role in the 2011 independent film “Ang Sayaw ng Dalawang Kaliwang Paa.” The Kapuso star won the New Movie Actor of the Year award at the 28th Star Awards for Movies and the Breakthrough Performance of the Year trophy at the 9th Golden Screen Awards for Movies.

Is the 25-year-old actor prepared for the pressure and the expectations that accompany these awards?

“Syempre, yung pagtanggap ng mga ganitong klaseng parangal, may mga consequences which I gladly accept. This comes as a challenge to maintain yung nagagawa ko,” Rocco told members of the press in an interview. “Ang kailangani-maintain yung attitude ko and remain grounded to accomplish goal, to excel in my craft.”

The star of the GMA-7 show “The Good Daughter” added, “To be in your second year in the business and tanggap mo itong ganitong award, it makes me what to work again. Kung pwede ngayon, magtrabaho na.”

Rocco Nacino

More than the pressure, Rocco said he feels humbled and motivated by the awards he received last month. Among the nominees at the recently-concluded Star Awards and Golden Screen Awards for movie, it was only he and Aga Muhlach (for the best actor category for “In The Name of Love”) who managed to get consecutive wins.

“Lalo kong naa-appreciate yung thought na mahilig talaga akong umarte and talagang gagalingan ko pa lalo,” Rocco said. “I want to be able to give what the audience wants.”

Smaller roles

Now that he can be billed as an “award-winning actor,” will Rocco be willing to accept small roles for movies and television shows?

The Starstruck V alumnus said it’s not even a slightest issue for him.

“Kahit gaano kaliit yan, gagawin ko pa rin. And I want to give back to the people who made this happen for me. At syempre, I want to give back sa mga taong naniwala sa akin,” he explained. “Kahit gaano kaliit yan, gusto kong gawin pa rin yan.”

After starring in the 2011 Metro Manila Film Festival entry “My Househusband,” Rocco returns to the indie scene via “Lam-Ang.” He plays the title role in the movie opposite Rochelle Pangilinan.

Rocco admits there is pressure to prove he is as good as people think he is.

“I don’t know kung magiging good or bad para sa akin ito. Pero para sa Lam-Ang, I think magiging perfectionist ako,” he shared. “I want everything to go right.”
