DERBEA/ The Top Asian Loveteam in Peru... DERRICK MONASTERIO & BEA BINENE

The GMA teleserye HANGGANG MAKITA KANG MULI (retitled as CAUTIVA in its Spanish version) created a sort of history in Peru. It only ended its first run last month but it was so successful that it became the highest rating Asian telenovela ever in that Latin American country (besting all the other Pinoy teleseryes shown there including the Kathniel-led La Promesa/Pangako Sa yo, but not only that, it also outclassed all the Korean dramas, including the much-ballyhoed just-concluded Descendants of the Sun, which, like all the other kdramas, was traditionally stuck in the bottom of the Peruvian ratings chart since the kdramas started appearing in that country. In a way, Cautiva & its main stars, Derrick Monasterio & Bea Binene became the flag bearers of Asia in Latin America.

Cautiva is not finished making history. Tomorrow (April 15, Peru time), just a month  after its first run, it will return again on the Peruvian small screen. Not in its former 4:00 PM slot but at the main primetime hour of 7:00 PM. It has just been lifted out of the usual afternoon slots for Asian telenovelas and promoted to the Peruvian big leagues.

That led me to discover Kristian Kostov singing the second-placed Bulgarian entry titled Beautiful Mess (yeah, the mess that is Eurovision suddenly made beautiful by his better-than-Justin Bieber song).

He actually looked like my former neighbor (yeah, a Pinoy, with the usual multi-racial background, but the Caucasian genes were   from a grandparent). He also sang beautifully like Kristian, aspired for a singing career but chickened out when he found out he had to open his zipper to a scout.

Is Jak Roberto The Lucky Guy Who Has Won Barbie Forteza's Heart Not Only In 'Meant To Be' But Also In Real Life?

HAS JAK ROBERTO overtaken his rivals to become the off and on cam BF of Barbie Forteza? Fans are wondering as they had a date with each other recently and they went on a movie marathon watching no less than three films simultaneously at U.P. Town Center. "Nataon lang na wala kaming taping noon," says Jak. "We invited Ken Chan, Ivan Dorschner and Addy Raj to join us pero hindi naman sila available kasi may kanya-kanya silang lakad, kaya kaming dalawa lang ni Barbie ang natuloy na makapanood. Grabe mga ang reaction sa internet, ina-underground ko raw si Barbie at nilalamangan yung tatlo gayong wala akong ganung intention."

He says his friendship with Barbie goes a long way back. "Barbie and I have been friends for a long time, bago pa ang show naming 'Meant to Be'. We even played husband and wife in the movie 'Laut', for which she won a best actress award in Europe. Ako yung irresponsible husband niya roong pabigat sa buhay niya. Pero hindi pa kami talaga. Kumbaga, what we had, it's only a friendly date. Niyaya rin nga naming sumama ang mommy niya, pero sabi, kaming dalawa na lang daw. E, matagal na akong di nakakapanood ng movie dahil sa sobrang busy sa tapings. So sinagad na namin with three movies."

Jak admits "Meant to Be" has done wonders for his career as he is now called Andoy (his character in the show) wherever he goes. He has really gone far from the days when he was just one of the many showbiz wannabes in "Walang Tulugan", where he and Ken Chan started. He says his role as Andoy really suits him. "Torpe kasi siya, mahiyain, e ganun din talaga ako in real life."


We heard aggressive girls approach him, attracted by his chiselled body that he has displayed on TV and in pictorials several times, giving him the title Pambansang Abs. "Naku, shy talaga ako sa ganyan. Nako-conscious nga ako kapag may nagpapa-picture sa'kin. Courting girls is not my forte."

He and his co-stars in "Meant to Be" are all very happy now that the airing of their show has been extended up to June. It still is awry this year-  except there's a saving factor. The winner from Portugal was typical of the drabness one expects of Eurovision, but the second place finish of a boy who represented Bulgaria more than compensated for the usual mess. It was all accidental. I was looking online for a clip of the Russian song ?????? ???? (Call Me) when I discovered a version of a 15 year-old  Moscow-born Russian boy (Kazakh mother & Bulgarian mother) singing it at the 2015 X-Factor Bulgaria. That led me to discover Kristian Kostov singing the second-placed Bulgarian entry titled Beautiful Mess (yeah, the mess that is Eurovision suddenly made beautiful by his better-than-Justin Bieber song).

He actually looked like my former neighbor (yeah, a Pinoy, with the usual multi-racial background, but the Caucasian genes were   from a grandparent). He also sang beautifully like Kristian, aspired for a singing career but chickened out when he found out he had to open his zipper to a scout.
