Corazon Aquino and EDSA People Power - 26 Years After

Corazon Aquino and EDSA People Power - 26 Years After

On Saturday, February 25, President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III, led the wreath-laying ceremony for her mom - the late president Corazon Aquino during the 26th anniversary celebration of the EDSA People Power Revolution at the Aquino monuments in Padre Burgos St. corner Bonifacio Drive at Rizal Park.

Read the President's full speech below:

Vice President Jojo Binay; Mayor Alfredo Lim; members of the Cabinet present: Secretaries Volts Gazmin, Rene Almendras, Sonny Coloma; Senator Nene Pimentel; Commissioner Cesar Sarino of the EDSA People Power Commission; Archbishop Chito Tagle; Bishop Gabby Reyes; Representatives Asilo, Trisha Bonoan-David; Mayor Junjun Binay; General Manager Jose Angel Honrado; Vice Admiral Alexander Pama; local government officials; fellow workers in government; honored guests; mga minamahal ko pong kababayan:

GMA Films' 'The Road' to Hollywood: History in the Making for Philippine Movies

After freaking the hell out of moviegoers in the Philippines with its unique but effectively haunting storyline and superb cinematography,

GMA Films’ 2011 thriller movie The Road will pave the way to Hollywood fame as it becomes the first ever all-Filipino film to be commercially released in North America and Canada this May.

Through an international distribution agreement with GMA Films, Hollywood-based international film distribution outfit Freestyle Releasing will commercially release The Road in the mainstream American and Canadian markets beginning May 11, 2012.

The movie, a brainchild of internationally-acclaimed film director Yam Laranas, will be shown in over 50 theaters across North America and Canada.  And just like any Hollywood movie, The Road will also hold a glitzy premiere night at the Mann Chinese Theater in Los Angeles, California on May 9.  The event will be graced by the film’s producers, cast, Laranas as well as prominent celebrities in Hollywood and the international film industry.

“I think this is the first time that a locally-produced Filipino film will be distributed commercially by an international releasing outfit in the U.S. and Canada, and treated like a Hollywood-produced movie.  This is not simply a special off-shore screening of a locally-produced film; this is in fact a full-fledged commercial distribution deal, and there’s a big difference between the two,” said GMA Films President Annette Gozon-Abrogar.

“We are honored to have the opportunity to exhibit the ingenuity and creativity of our artists and directors in the international market.  It’s about time that we show the world that we, Filipinos, are not only good in boxing or singing, but we can also excel in the field of movie-making.  The release of The Road in the U.S. and Canada is good news not just for GMA Films but also for the Philippine film industry because this would inspire especially our new generation of directors, writers, cinematographers and artists to perfect their skills and aspire for greater heights,” said GMA Chairman and CEO Felipe L. Gozon.
Laranas also expressed his happiness on the outcome of his film.

“I am very excited for GMA in this history-making and pioneering development for The Road.  This opens a ton of possibilities on the international arena not just for GMA Films or GMA Network but also for GMA Pinoy TV.  This only proves the quality entertainment of international standards is highly-important to the network,” he said.

Described by international film critics as “creepy to the extreme” (KillerFilm.com) and a “beautifully shot supernatural tale with incredible effects and great scares” (Bloody Disgusting), The Road is a story about a twelve-year-old cold case, which was recently reopened when three teenagers went missing while traversing an infamous and abandoned road.  As investigators try to find leads to the whereabouts of the missing teens, they also unearth the road’s gruesome past that spans two decades – a history of abduction, crimes and murders.  Although the road is isolated, anyone who tries to pass through it can be sure that he is not alone.  Lingering in the dark and desolate pathway is a vengeful ghost who makes sure no one leaves the road – alive!

The movie stars Rhian Ramos, Carmina Villarroel, Marvin Agustin, TJ Trinidad, tween stars Alden Richards, Barbie Forteza, Louise delos Reyes, Derrick Monasterio, Lexi Fernandez, Ynna Asistio and Renz Valerio. Also starring in the film are John Regala, Lloyd Samartino, Gerald Madrid, Allan Paule and Ms Jacklyn Jose.
The Road will also be simultaneously released in digital home video format (DVD) and will be made available globally via subscription-based and online distribution platforms including Video-on-Demand (VoD), Amazon Prime, Netflix, and iTunes.

Ruffa on annulment: God is good

"God is good!"

Thus did Ruffa Gutierrez briefly but meaningful share her feelings about the annulment of her marriage to Turkish businessman Yilmaz Bektas with viewers of her weekly showbiz-oriented show, “Paparazzi: showbiz Exposed.”

She also told viewers on Saturday, February 25, that it's an emotional time for her because the petition for the annulment was long overdue. She also couldn't contain her emotions when she saw the video of her and Yilmaz before she was interviewed by her “Paparazzi” colleagues.

Ruffa only has good words for Yilmaz. She said on "Paparazzi" that she has known him for more than 10 years and wishes him all the luck.

By Walden Martinez Belen | Yahoo! Southeast Asia Newsroom

"Sana from this day forward we can grow, maging magkaibigan na lang kami and at peace in our hearts for our kids," she expressed.

Ruffa added that she already left her past behind.

"I want to remember Yilmaz for all the good things and kung bakit ako na-in love sa kanya in the first place, kung bakit kami may dalawang anak. I have let go, even if I am emotional sometimes about it is just because may pinagsamahan kami at naging asawa ko siya."

She had mixed reactions when she got the annulment papers.

"With me I couldn't read the resolutions. I had to wait talaga until I was on the plane till nabasa ko talaga ang resolution. Parang flashback of the things na nangyari. You know i can say that it was a bitter sweet journey," she shared.

Ruffa and Yilmaz have been apart for almost five years since they jointly announced their separation last May 8, 2007. The statement cited cultural differences–not “abuse”–which Ruffa openly talked about, as one of the reasons for the separation.

Ruffa has sole custody of the children, Lorin and Venice.

Jason asks Melai for space

Have former “Pinoy Big Brother” (PBB) housemates Melai Cantiveros and Jason Francisco started and ended their relationship inside the house where they first met?

That’s the question in everybody’s mind even before Jason and Melai visited the PBB house on Sunday, Feb. 19. Speculations even grew stronger when televiewers noticed that Jason and Melai were cold to each other inside the house.

“Ang kailangan ko lang ay space. Sobrang hirap kaya… Ayaw ko ng magkaroon ng personal na problema sa atin kasi hindi ko na kayang i-handle, naiirita na ako,” Jason told Melai in “PBB” on Thursday’s episode, February 23.

Things have changed

Jason said he has many things on his plate right now--showbiz career, family and relationship. And he cannot give his full attention and time to Melai. He said things have already changed since they left the PBB house.

“Iyon na nga kasi hindi mo kaya ng ganoon. Bakit panghabambuhay ba itong ginagawa natin? Yung trabaho natin na ito? Iyon yung hindi mo makuha, yung relasyon na gusto mo ay sobrang ma-on, hindi ma-off,” he added.

According to Melai, a relationship must be two-way. The couple should build their relationship.

“Alam mo, sa relasyon natin dapat bini-build natin iyon. Paano natin ibi-build ang relasyon natin kung ako lang ang nagbi-build? Alam mo kung masaya ka sa akin, dapat masaya ka,” Melai asked.

Jason obviously tried not to delve on the issue as he lay on the couch while Melai was talking. Melai asked Jason why he is already giving up on her.

“Ako nandito lang naman ako sa iyo bakit nanghihingi ba ako ng time sa iyo? Sa lahat ng relasyon eh ikaw ang iintindihin kasi give and take. Tayong dalawa nag-relasyon tayo parang kumbaga bumubuo tayo ng castle, hindi pwedeng ako lang ang bumubuo, dapat bumubuo ka din,” she said.

Finding another man

When Melai asked if it is okay for her to find another man, Jason replied, “Ok sige lang, mas ok nga iyon para hindi ka na umiyak.”

Melai walked out and told Jason, “Sobrang ma-pride ka kasi, binibigay mo sa pride lahat.”

Jason and Melai left the PBB house on Friday, February 24, and thanked Big Brother for opening the doors again for them.

Jericho talks about Fil-British girlfriend

Months after he admitted that he already has a girlfriend, Jericho Rosales finally dropped hints on the identity of his Filipino-British girlfriend.

In an interview with members of the press during a pictorial for “Nang Dahil sa Pag-ibig” at the ABS-CBN compound on Friday, February 24, a hesitant Jericho finally revealed his girlfriend is a host at ETC, the lifestyle cable channel.

“Ito na lang (hint), then I'll stop. Host sya sa ETC, isang fashion lifestyle show called “Etcetera.” Pinoy siya, kalog parang ako,” Jericho said.

Jericho Rosales (NPPA Images)

Very happy

Adding that he’s very happy with his love life, Jericho pointed out that he doesn’t want to discuss his girlfriend since he wants people to know her for her work and for who she really is.

“We just have to talk about it (revealing their relationship in public), para rin sa kanya. I’m sure naman okay rin sa kanya yun, she’s a nice person. All I can say is I’m really happy,” he said.

Jericho explained that he has known the girl for a year and that she also loves surfing like he does.

“Hindi naman sa paga-ano, normal siyang tao sa loob at labas. Basta importante nagkasundo kami sa surfing, mahal siya ng pamilya ko, mga kaibigan ko, sa Genesis (his management company)."

Follow-up

“Nang Dahil sa Pag-ibig” is Jericho’s follow-up to the TV drama “Green Rose.”

He describes his character in the new soap:

“Siya ang may dark side sa soap na ito, pero mabait siya. Meron lang syang dark past.”

Jericho explained that he is excited to work with top caliber like Christopher de Leon and Piolo Pascual in the series because they are very experienced and serious in their craft.

“It’s going to be much easier for me kasi maganda yung makukuha ko sa kanila. These guys are veterans, so kapag binigyan nila ako ng solid meat, ganoon din ang maibibigay ko sa kanila. Ibibigay nila ang kailangan mo. These guys won’t give you less than what you expect,” he said, referring to Christopher and Piolo.

Jericho admitted hesitating at first in accepting the TV drama, but the casting and great story removed his doubts in no time at all.

The story, he goes on, revolves around family, love and forgiveness.

Dream come true

“Matagal ko nang pangarap na makasama si PJ (Piolo) sa soap and sa movie. Sa movie talaga yung pini-pray ko na magkasama kami. As usual, medyo nagdalawang isip ako kase soap, mahaba, mabigat. Pero nakita ko maganda yung story,” Jericho relates.

He adds that the drama doesn’t only focus on love stories, but on family issues as well.

Jericho is just as happy working with female leads Maricar Reyes and Cristine Reyes since he considers them great actresses.

By Karen Valeza | Yahoo! Southeast Asia Newsroom

Maricar thinks Jericho is funnier than Piolo

Jericho Rosales is more jolly and funny. Piolo Pascual is serious and reserved.

That’s how Maricar Reyes describes her co-stars in ABS-CBN’s upcoming TV drama “Nang Dahil sa Pag-Ibig.”

“Mas kenkoy si Echo (Jericho), mas ma-joke. Very funny, ibang level. Sobra syang jolly, nakakatuwa,” she observes.

She adds that Piolo has not changed since they worked together in the 2009 TV drama “Lovers in Paris.”

“He’s still the same,” Maricar said in an interview at a pictorial for “Nang Dahil sa Pag-Ibig” in the ABS-CBN compound on Friday, February 24.

Maricar Reyes (NPPA Images)

Jericho plays her love interest while Piolo portrays a wealthy family’s son.

Jericho lightens mood once the cameras are off and they take a break from shooting heavy scenes.

“The story is very bigat kasi teleserye, so it’s nice to have someone who’s very light. Pero syempre, kapag game or shoot na, very professional,” she said.

Maricar reveals that she enjoys working with her co-actors as they have different personalities.

Good mix

“All of them joke (naman) in different ways. It’s a good mix, kasi syempre ko kapag lahat naman kami pare-pareho ng personalities. So, it’s nice na kapag may quiet time, hihirit si Echo.”

What sets Jericho apart from other Kapamilya actors she has worked with, like John Lloyd Cruz and Coco Martin?

“Kanya-kanya sila eh. Si Echo, when it’s a happy scene, happy talaga sya. Pero kapag mabigat, you really see the change. It’s nice because it’s hard to snap in and out,” she replied.

Learning from co-stars

Maricar adds that she learns a lot from her co-actors, especially in analyzing her character.

“Not just with acting, but also how to develop your character. You know you have to dig deeper, iyon yung natutunan ko sa kanila.”

As Agnes Santiago in the series, Maricar loves deeply, commits errors and mends her ways in the end.

“Focused, professional. Pero kapag na-inlove, medyo baliw ng kaunti. Pero she refocused herself and tries to do what is right,” she said.

Can she relate to her character?

Maricar’s simple reply: “I admire her character.”

She feels grateful for the continuous projects she gets from the Kapamilya network. Maricar just finished the Sunday afternoon drama “Growing Up” and is working on the new drama “Nang Dahil sa Pag-ibig.”

“It’s the pressure. Kasi you always have this fear na you might not deliver. I want to be known to be doing my job well,” Maricar said.

“Nang Dahil sa Pag-Ibig” also stars Christopher de Leon, Sandy Andolong, Cristine Reyes, Techie Agabayani, Rey "PJ" Abellana, Denise Laurel and Rafael Rosel and is directed by Darnel Villaflor and Avel Sunpongco.

Officially single Ruffa gets custody of children

Kapatid television host-actress Ruffa Gutierrez is now single.

Her marriage to Yilmaz Bektas has been annulled by the Taguig Regional Trial Court.

“The petition for the declaration of the nullity of marriage which we filed on behalf of our client, Ms. Ruffa Gutierrez, against her husband, Yilmaz Bektas, has finally been granted by the Regional Trial Court of Taguig City, declaring the same to be null and void under Article 36 of the Family Code last January 17, 2011,” Ruffa’s legal counsel Howard Calleja and Connie Aquino of the Calleja Law Office said in a statement.

The custody of the un-couple’s two daughters, Lorin Gabriella and Venezia Loran, was awarded to Ruffa.

Ruffa and Yilmaz got married in 2003. In 2007, the host of TV5’s “Paparazzi: Showbiz Exposes” admitted she and the Turkish businessman separated.

In an earlier interview with Yahoo! Philippines OMG, Ruffa said she wants to prioritize her family and work over romantic relationships. Ruffa added that she is currently “the full provider (for) Lorin and Venice and I make the decisions for them.”
