"LEGENDARY DOCTOR HUR JUN" is a South Korean television series about the exploits of court doctor Hur Jun aired in 2000. It got record-breaking viewership ratings. It was also aired successfully in Taiwan in 2002, in Hong Kong in 2005, in Thailand in 2006 and is now shown in the Philippines for the first time on PTV4 on Saturday and Sunday, 9:15 PM. Hur Jun has written a book about ancient medicine that is considered a best-seller up to now. He is often considered the male counterpart of Jang Geum in the equally popular "Jewel in the Palace", a hit when shown on GMA.
The story of Hur Jun is set in Joseon in the 1600's, 50 years after the death of Jang Geum of "Jewel in the Palace". Hur Jun's mother is from a lower caste and, as a result, he faced much discrimination and initially became a smuggler. He was rescued from this by love and when his mom fell ill, he met a famous physician who became his teacher. He learned very quickly and saved a girl who tried to kill herself with innovative medicines.
News of his medicinal prowess quickly spread and he started treating sick people for free. When he
cures a rich woman who had a stroke, he is invited to be part of the Imperial Hospital where he became very popular when he treated the brother of the Emperor's favorite concubine who has stomach cancer.
He later also cures the Emperor's concubine herself who got ill, Kim Gong-bin. The Emperor then assigned him to be the personal physician for Gong-bin. He also cures a prince and the grateful Emperor promoted Hur Jun as
Chief Imperial Doctor. "Legendary Doctor" is considered one of the turning points in Korean television drama and some Koreans demonstrated interest in traditional Korean medicine after watching the show. Don't miss it now on PTV4 on weekends.
