Controversial Thriller “Anonymous” Exclusive at Ayala Malls Cinemas

Controversial Thriller “Anonymous” Exclusive at Ayala Malls Cinemas

Set in the political snake-pit of Elizabethan England, Columbia Pictures' new thriller “Anonymous” speculates on an issue that has for centuries intrigued academics and brilliant minds such as Mark Twain, Charles Dickens, and Sigmund Freud, namely: who actually created the body of work credited to William Shakespeare?

Experts have debated, books have been written, and scholars have devoted their lives to protecting or debunking theories surrounding the authorship of the most renowned works in English literature. “Anonymous” poses one possible answer, focusing on a time when scandalous political intrigue, illicit romances in the Royal Court, and the schemes of greedy nobles lusting for the power of the throne were brought to light in the most unlikely of places: the London stage.

To be shown soon exclusively at Ayala Malls Cinemas (Glorietta 4, Greenbelt 3 and Trinoma), “Anonymous” stars Rhys Ifans, Vanessa Redgrave, Joely Richardson, David Thewlis, Xavier Samuel, Sebastian Armesto, Rafe Spall, Edward Hogg, Jamie Campbell Bower, and Derek Jacobi. The film is directed by Roland Emmerich from the script by John Orloff.

It might not seem that Roland Emmerich – best known as the director of the epic blockbusters “Independence Day,” “The Day After Tomorrow” and “2012” – would necessarily choose as his next project a story set in Elizabethan England. However, for nearly ten years, he has wanted to make a film with the Shakespeare authorship question as a backdrop – a yearning that is fulfilled with “Anonymous.”

Screenwriter John Orloff says he had been fascinated by the Shakespeare authorship question since first learning about the controversy as a 25-year-old graduate student 20 years ago. “My first thought was, ‘Why had no one told me this?!’” he says. “My second thought was that this would make a fantastic film. It had everything – murder, sex, lies, betrayal – truly the stuff of Shakespearean drama.

In writing that story, Orloff centered around the idea of two writers – Shakespeare, the front man, and the true writer, behind the curtain. “Ben Jonson wrote the introduction to the first folio, the first official published plays of Shakespeare – he writes this beautiful, beautiful poem dedicated to Shakespeare who by that point, had been dead for several years. But if you read other Jonson works, some shorter poems or some of his plays, he’s not quite so laudatory of Shakespeare and his poems actually make fun of him and are very angry with him. It made me think that Jonson was talking about two different people – one, the true poet, and the other, a fraud.”

Emmerich was immediately receptive to Orloff’s idea – and the director had some big ideas that he felt the story could support. “The script is very much about the relationship between Ben Jonson, William Shakespeare, and Edward De Vere – that is very much the heart of the movie – but I felt it just needed a little more than that. I asked myself, ‘What was the most important thing in that era?’ and it was clearly succession” – the question of who would follow the heirless Elizabeth on the throne.

I had a little story about art and jealousy,” says Orloff, “and with that suggestion, Roland wanted to propel the script into a whole new dimension of dramatic possibility.

What intrigued me was not just the idea that William Shakespeare did not write the plays,” says Emmerich. “That spark opened up all sorts of avenues for the story, to look at the creative fire in people and to explore the relationship between art and politics – is the pen truly mightier than the sword?

Tackling a subject that is so widely discussed and documented proved rather tricky for Orloff in the early stages of his script writing. He says, “Writing something that is based on non-fiction and historical material simply has to find a way to balance between fact and drama,” says Orloff. “We tried as much as possible to keep to historical facts – and I’m very proud of how accurate it is, as long as you take the conceit that the movie portrays DeVere as the writer of the works and not William Shakespeare. Not everyone’s going to agree with that!

Roland has such a feel for the exciting topics that get people out of their chairs,” says producer Kirstin Winkler. “I certainly don’t think that the film is trying to dictate his story as the truth; it’s just one take on the authorship question, telling one tale.”

That said, Winkler goes on that she expects Emmerich’s film to be controversial. “There is quite a radical group of Stratfordians out there who feel very strongly about preserving the image of Shakespeare as the writer of the plays and sonnets,” she says.

But controversy aside, actor David Thewlis says that the film works well simply as a story. “No matter what you believe, it’s a great story,” he says. “Roland is very passionate about authorship question and he wants to put it to a wider audience. He is a very mischievous man, but I think he’s been rather daring to do this story – he likes to push people’s buttons.”

It’s All About Love in Tambayan 101.9

It’s All About Love in Tambayan 101.9

When it comes to love, people tune in to three Tambayan 101.9 DJs who are ready to coach, to give advice, and even to help people find their match.

They write to DJ Jasmin, talk to DJ Chacha, or go on a dating game through DJ Charlie.

“Usapang Tambayan,” hosted by DJ Charlie everday from 1 pm to 3pm, has paved the way for many listeners to find possible life partners. In fact, the daily dating game has touched the lives of its listeners and even produced two couples who have been blessed with children.

I was even invited to their weddings,” the bubbly DJ shared. “And mind you, I was actually a ninong.

In his program, DJ Charlie features a “hotseater” who shares with the public the kind of person he or she wants to meet. Four callers get to chat with the “hotseater” for five minutes on air. At the end of the program, the hotseater makes a decision and they are supposed to have an “eyeball” or meet in person.

DJ Charlie says his program doesn’t discriminate hotseaters. Anyone can join his show and he always does his best to make sure that both the “hotseater” and the callers are comfortable. “There are some who are shy at first, but I help them open up. That way, they can find the person who will really click with their personalities,” he said.

If DJ Charlie is Tambayan’s matchmaker, then DJ Jasmin is Tambayan’s love counselor. Her program ““Dear Jasmin,” which was recently adjudged the Most Development Oriented Program at the 2012 Gandingan Awards, features letter from listeners, whose stories are turned into radio dramas. It is the only radio drama which airs on the FM band.

DJ Jasmin is very much hands-on when it comes to her show. She not only narrates the letter, prepares the dramas, and plays the songs, but she also gives advice, which isn’t always easy.

There are days when giving advice just comes out naturally, but there also times when I am also going through something myself,” the KBP Golden Dove awardee and Gandingan Awards’ Best DJ for 2012 laughed. “Heartaches actually enable me to become a better advisor!

Her skills were put to the test when she encountered a case of a love triangle in the program. A balikbayan named Ben wrote to share how he went to the Philippines to confront his best friend, Morris, who impregnated his girlfriend.

Incidentally, Morris was actually tuned in to Tambayan 101.9 on the day that Jasmin read his letter. A month later, he also wrote to ““Dear Jasmin”” because he thought the program could be a way for him to explain his side to Ben and DJ Jasmin could be a way for him to reach out to his friend.

Sadly, the issue hasn’t been resolved yet. But I’m still in touch with both Ben and Morris and I’m hoping the time will come when they’ll both be ready to talk to each other,” DJ Jasmin said.

As for DJ Chacha, whose program “Ano’ng Meron” airs from 9 pm to 12 midnight, it’s all about being someone whom listeners can call to talk about their love life, including issues that cater to a more mature audience.

One time, a male called tried to turn the tables. He noticed how DJ Chacha was always the one giving advice and thought she might want to open up also since she might also have her own problems too. She found it cute and was touched by the caller’s effort.

Other callers though have different agenda like asking her out on a date.

All I can offer is a dose of ‘mwahmwah-tsuptsup’ for now,” DJ Chacha laughed.

So tune in to Tambayan 101.9 and connect with DJ Charlie, DJ Jasmin, and DJ Chacha by calling 924-2684 or 415-1111. Watch the live streaming at www.tambayan1019.com . Catch DJ Charlie in “Usapang Tambayan” from 1 pm to 3 pm, DJ Jasmin in “Dear Jasmin” from 11 am to 1 pm, and DJ Chacha in “Ano’ng Meron” from 9 pm to 12 mn only in the 2012 Gandingan Awards Best FM Station awardee, Tambayan 101.9 San ka pa!

“My Week With Marilyn” Only at Ayala Malls Cinemas Starting February 29

“My Week With Marilyn” Only at Ayala Malls Cinemas Starting February 29

The Weinstein Company's critically acclaimed and Oscar-nominated film “My Week With Marilyn” starring Michelle Williams and Kenneth Branagh will be shown exclusively at Ayala Malls Cinemas (Glorietta 4, Greenbelt 3 and Trinoma) starting February 29.

The film has been nominated for two Academy Awards, namely Best Actress (Williams) and Best Supporting Actor (Branagh).

In the film, fresh graduate Colin Clark (Eddie Redmayne) met Marilyn Monroe (Williams) while working as a young assistant on Laurence Olivier's "The Prince and the Showgirl." When Marilyn experienced emotional difficulties during shooting, the 23-year-old third assistant director came to her aid and romance developed. But one week of honesty and fun was not enough to save the doomed star from self-destruction…

In its review of the “My Week With Marilyn,” Variety is all praises for the film, saying, “To the extent that Michelle Williams' multilayered interpretation of Marilyn Monroe serves as its raison d'etre, the film succeeds stunningly.

The film belongs to Williams, whose tour-de-force turn conflates three Marilyns: the lost, damaged little girl who seeks to escape others' expectations and return to simpler childhood days; the sexy superstar who impishly poses with a wink in complicity with her public; and the actress playing a pre-scripted part. The genius of the performance lies in the way Williams stresses the interconnectedness of these personalities: The neediness fuels the impudence, the vulnerability turns sexually provocative, and the little girl and sexpot together drive the screen role.

The Hollywood Reporter, for its part, writes, “Monroe's beauty was one of a kind. No one, not even Williams, can act it. What Williams does, with fierce artistry and feeling, is illuminate Monroe's insights and insecurities about herself at the height of her fame. Her scenes with a superb Kenneth Branagh, his wit martini-dry as the thin-lipped, defensive Olivier, ignite. It took a toll on Monroe to look effortlessly buoyant on camera. Williams lets us see why. It's a great, soulful performance. Sit back and behold.

Finally, Time Magazine applauds, “It’s the compassion of her performance that makes Williams end up not just looking but feeling like Marilyn Monroe. Williams locates a central truth, the contradictory allure of this utterly impossible woman — mercurial, vain, foolish, but also intelligent in some very primal way and achingly vulnerable. You like her, but you wouldn’t want to work with or for her.

Al Galang, a 28-year-old former model and now owner and director of Sundar Bikram Yoga in Greenhills, San Juan, is being dragged in the Dra. Vicki Belo - Hayden Kho split-up (read related article HERE).

And to clear things out, Al speaks to deny his involvement with the former on-and-off couple’s relationship problem.

This is all an issue between two parties, Hayden and Vicki. As long as I've known them, they've in a faithful relationship; eventually it just didn't work out.

At the end of the day, Vicki and Hayden are two adults going through a necessary process in order to come out on top as two better people,” he said.

How about the letter Hayden said he sent Dra. Belo proving they have an intimate relationship?

I wouldn’t put too much stock in that letter though; I don’t even remember it. I’ve given her notes and words of encouragement in the past, but I don’t know what this particular letter is all about. I don’t even remember who it’s for! Haha.” Al clarified.

The former Mossimo Bikini Summit runner-up also expressed his excitement on Dra. Belo's decision to stay single and happy.

Vicki is an awesome gal. And as a close friend of Vicki's Family, I will continue to offer my full support in what has become quite a bit of an ordeal. She is an amazing woman that has been through much worse than this. I have no doubt in my mind she'll be ok.

I’m actually excited for her; she really seems to enjoy being single. Her newfound happiness definitely suits her.

Marjorie Kwan Killed, Dabawenyos Call for Justice

Dabawenyos condemned the killing of a registered nurse and urged Vice Mayor Rodrigo Duterte to immediately act on the murder using his “iron fist”.

Chinese-Filipino registered nurse Marjorie Kwan was on her way home to RGA Village, Paciano Bangoy, this city, when shot dead by riding in tandem gunmen around 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

Witnesses said Kwan refused to surrender her bag to the gunmen, prompting one of the suspects to shoot her. The victim succumbed to four gunshot wounds in her hand, chest, back and head.

Family and friends of the 23-year-old victim, through social networking site Facebook, condemned the killing and called for justice for Kwan.

A Justice for Marjorie Kwan page was created on Facebook and it already has 3,948 likes as of this posting.

In their Facebook accounts, several Dabawenyos also called on Duterte to immediately address the problem with criminals in the city.

The elder Duterte is known as Davao's “The Punisher” for his strong stance against criminals.

Police said on Sunday they already have the identity of the suspects, but refused to reveal them pending further investigation.

Before the shooting of Kwan, the residences of Davao-based journalists Radyo ng Bayan manager Peng Aliƃ±o, TV 5 Davao editor Jefry Tupas and Philippine Daily Inquirer Mindanao bureau chief Nico Alconaba were ransacked by still unidentified robbers.

Ash Wednesday Today Marks the Start of Lenten Season

The 40-day Lenten season begins today, Ash Wednesday, considered as a universal day of fasting, abstinence, prayer, self-denial, and repentance.

In keeping with an old religious tradition, priests in violet vestments, the color of penance, will mark the foreheads of the faithful with a cross using the ashes of burnt palm fronds from last year's Palm Sunday observance with a gentle reminder: ''Remember man, thou art dust and unto dust thou shall return'' (Genesis 3:19) or with a challenge: ''Turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel'' (Mark 1:15). The faithful traditionally retain the ashes on their foreheads until sundown as a sign of humility and complete surrender to God.

Gospel reflections taken from Mark 6:1-6, 16-18 will focus on Jesus' warning against hypocrisy as well as His teachings on alms-giving, works of piety and charity, praying, and fasting which, He said, must be done ''not for others to see, but in secret, so that the Father who sees in secret will give His just reward.''

On Wednesday and on Good Friday, Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59, except for the sick, are permitted to consume only one full meal, which may be supplemented by two smaller meals, which together should not exceed the full meal. Those who are 14-years-old and above are also required to abstain from meat on Wednesday and on all Fridays for the duration of the the Lenten season.

GMA Films' 'The Road' to Hollywood: History in the Making for Philippine Movies

After freaking the hell out of moviegoers in the Philippines with its unique but effectively haunting storyline and superb cinematography,

GMA Films’ 2011 thriller movie The Road will pave the way to Hollywood fame as it becomes the first ever all-Filipino film to be commercially released in North America and Canada this May.
Through an international distribution agreement with GMA Films, Hollywood-based international film distribution outfit Freestyle Releasing will commercially release The Road in the mainstream American and Canadian markets beginning May 11, 2012.

The movie, a brainchild of internationally-acclaimed film director Yam Laranas, will be shown in over 50 theaters across North America and Canada.  And just like any Hollywood movie, The Road will also hold a glitzy premiere night at the Mann Chinese Theater in Los Angeles, California on May 9.  The event will be graced by the film’s producers, cast, Laranas as well as prominent celebrities in Hollywood and the international film industry.
“I think this is the first time that a locally-produced Filipino film will be distributed commercially by an international releasing outfit in the U.S. and Canada, and treated like a Hollywood-produced movie.  This is not simply a special off-shore screening of a locally-produced film; this is in fact a full-fledged commercial distribution deal, and there’s a big difference between the two,” said GMA Films President Annette Gozon-Abrogar.
“We are honored to have the opportunity to exhibit the ingenuity and creativity of our artists and directors in the international market.  It’s about time that we show the world that we, Filipinos, are not only good in boxing or singing, but we can also excel in the field of movie-making.  The release of The Road in the U.S. and Canada is good news not just for GMA Films but also for the Philippine film industry because this would inspire especially our new generation of directors, writers, cinematographers and artists to perfect their skills and aspire for greater heights,” said GMA Chairman and CEO Felipe L. Gozon.
Laranas also expressed his happiness on the outcome of his film.

“I am very excited for GMA in this history-making and pioneering development for The Road.  This opens a ton of possibilities on the international arena not just for GMA Films or GMA Network but also for GMA Pinoy TV.  This only proves the quality entertainment of international standards is highly-important to the network,” he said.

Described by international film critics as “creepy to the extreme” (KillerFilm.com) and a “beautifully shot supernatural tale with incredible effects and great scares” (Bloody Disgusting), The Road is a story about a twelve-year-old cold case, which was recently reopened when three teenagers went missing while traversing an infamous and abandoned road.  As investigators try to find leads to the whereabouts of the missing teens, they also unearth the road’s gruesome past that spans two decades – a history of abduction, crimes and murders.  Although the road is isolated, anyone who tries to pass through it can be sure that he is not alone.  Lingering in the dark and desolate pathway is a vengeful ghost who makes sure no one leaves the road – alive!

The movie stars Rhian Ramos, Carmina Villarroel, Marvin Agustin, TJ Trinidad, tween stars Alden Richards, Barbie Forteza, Louise delos Reyes, Derrick Monasterio, Lexi Fernandez, Ynna Asistio and Renz Valerio. Also starring in the film are John Regala, Lloyd Samartino, Gerald Madrid, Allan Paule and Ms Jacklyn Jose.
The Road will also be simultaneously released in digital home video format (DVD) and will be made available globally via subscription-based and online distribution platforms including Video-on-Demand (VoD), Amazon Prime, Netflix, and iTunes.
GMA Films is the movie production arm of media giant GMA Network, Inc.

Two TV5 Shows Earn Finalist Slots at the New York Festivals

After its impressive finish in the Asian TV Awards late last year, TV5 is set to conquer international recognition yet again after earning two nods at the prestigious New York Festivals TV and Film Awards scheduled this April.
Wanted – Child Special (hosted by Raffy Tulfo) is a finalist at the Community Service Programs category, while NEWS5 Debates – Hamon sa Pagbabago (A Challenge For Change) hosted by NEWS5 chief Luchi Cruz-Valdes, Atty. Dong Puno and Paolo Bediones is listed at the Politics category.

The two Kapatid programs from the network’s news and information division will be competing with other programs from over 40 countries.

Since its major relaunch last March 2010, the Kapatid Network has been on a winning streak in terms of viewership and recognitions - most notable of which was its Asian TV Awards trophy for Star Confessions last December 2011. Two other Kapatid programs - Talentadong Pinoy (Best General Entertainment category) and Lokomoko (Best Comedy Programme category) - competed in Asia’s most prestigious award-giving body - making TV5 the most competitive Philippine TV network in the Asian TV Awards last year.
