Movie Review: Dementia - Beautifully Mounted But Provides No Solid Scares

“DEMENTIA” avoids MLT’s kind of bloody gore with its more quiet version of a ghost story. We really pray it makes lots of money for the sake of Ate Guy and Direk Perci Intalan, but sadly, when we watched it at Trinoma on the first day of its screening, there were only a handful of us moviegoers. The best thing about “Dementia” is the location, the beautiful islands of Batanes captured in all its glory by the superb cinematography. But this is not new since Batanes has been explored before in “Hihintayin Kita sa Langit”, and the Adolf Alix movies “Kadin” and “Batanes”. Often told with splendid production and technical values, but at a very leisurely pace that dwells so much on the gloomy, eerie atmosphere of the place, the movie has so much moody ‘boringga’ factor. Horror films can be told in an unhurried pace without being tedious and lethargic. The best example for us is Jack Clayton’s “The Innocents”, an adaptation of Henry James’ “The Turn of the Screw”, about a governess (beautifully played by Deborah Kerr) trying to save two haunted children. A psychological enigma, it takes its time in telling the ambiguous story as you can’t tell whether the story is really happening or it’s all just in the unbalanced mind of the governess, but the overall effect is cumulative, which doesn’t happen in “Dementia”. Like other scare flicks, “Dementia” merely resorts to its own share of cheap jump scares capitalizing on loud noise and jarring music.

DENNIS EVANGELISTA, producer of internationally award-winning films “Kamkam” and “Magkakabaung” requested us to correct the item that came out in Post It last Monday saying Allen Dizon won as best actor for “Magkakabaung” at the Sundance International Filmfest recently. “Please correct it for us,” he writes. “I never said it won in Sundance as no Filipino film has ever won there. It’s so embarrasing. Allen won best actor at the 9th Harlem International Filmfest held in New York City, not in Sundance which is in Utah. It will be shown again in competition in another international filmfest in November but hindi pa puedeng i-reveal kung ano as they themselves will have to make the announcement. But Allen is definitely going there with Director Jason Laxamana.”

Origin of the Monster Dracula Unveils in the Latest Movie "Dracula Untold"

Columbia Pictures PR

Since the publication of Bram Stoker’s definitive “Dracula” in 1897, one of the most enduring literary and popular characters of our time has been explored in film, animation, literature and music, and is as relevant today as he was when his creator spawned a cultural phenomenon almost 120 years ago. Although Dracula’s presence remains ubiquitous in culture, it remains surprising that the origins of this undead icon have never been explored on film...until now, in Universal Pictures' dark thriller “Dracula Untold.”

While the man history calls Dracula, for all intents and purposes, was actually a real historical figure, just as terrifying to millions of people are the vampires of ancient myth. Found in almost every culture and language on Earth—from the Babylonians’ Lilitu, a succubus who thrived on babies, to the iron-toothed Asasabonsam of the Ashanti peoples of Ghana—the legend of blood-sucking creatures of the night may be traced back thousands of years. But it was not until the 10th century, in Slavic Europe, that the word “vampire” first appeared in modern language.

Producer Michael De Luca, who has brought to the screen blockbusters from The Social Network and Ghost Rider to Moneyball and Captain Phillips, shares what brought him to the journey of uncovering the monster’s origins: “As a kid, I always wanted to know who turned Dracula into a vampire. I wondered, ‘Was he the first? Were there others?’ It was a delicious, unanswered question that’s not been covered, even in Bram Stoker’s novel.”

When a script by the up-and-coming writing team of Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless landed on De Luca’s desk, it ignited the filmmaker’s imagination. “I thought it was ingenious,” he commends, “the untold origin story and an unknown chapter of an archetypal character we all know.

Naturally, our story delves into the mysterious powers bestowed by centuries of superstitious peoples, but this tale of Dracula begins with and borrows from the real-life story of an actual historical figure: Vlad III of Wallachia, aka Kaziglu Bey (The Impaler Prince). Indeed, the writers took many basic facts about the dark ruler and extrapolated them into a fantastic saga.

Vlad III was born in 1431 in Transylvania. As a child, he and his younger brother were sent by their father, Vlad II, as hostages of Sultan Murad II to Constantinople, where they were held for six years and trained in warfare. As Transylvania was located between two empires—the Ottoman Turks and the Austrian Hapsburgs—the young noblemen lived in a time of constant war, and certain sacrifices had to be made.

Vlad III grew to become a ruthless conqueror whose favored method of meting out torture was to impale people and leave them writhing in agony for days. This terrifying fact is what earned him the posthumous nickname of Vlad the Impaler (aka Vlad Tepes). Because his father belonged to the Order of the Dragon—a secretive organization of Christian knights—that fought the Muslim Ottoman Empire, Vlad II took to the name Dracul, which is roughly translated from Romanian into “dragon/devil.”

After his father’s death, Vlad III ruled Wallachia, south of Transylvania, from 1448 until his own death in 1476. Following in his father’s footsteps, Vlad III was also inducted into the Order of the Dragon. It was then that he instructed his men to call him “Dracula,” which means “son of the dragon/devil” in Romanian. Reportedly killed in 1476 fighting the Turks, Vlad III’s head was cut off and displayed in Constantinople…for the entire city to see and fear.

Having agreed to take on the writers’ revisionist story of Vlad III’s transformation, the next step in the process for De Luca was to find a home for the film and explore financing and production options. Historically, Universal Pictures was the first studio to adapt the character for screen in 1931, and De Luca explains that this Dracula would finally be coming home: “Universal just seemed like a natural fit. The studio has this storied pedigree with monster movies, and Dracula Untold pays homage to all the beloved films that have come before.”

Opening across the Philippines on October 15, “Dracula Untold” is distributed by United International Pictures through Columbia Pictures.

Kathryn Bernardo Reacts to Daniel Padilla and Jasmine Curtis-Smith Relationship

Days after the controversial 90-second audio clip involving Teen King Daniel Padilla allegedly talking about his "special friend" Kapatid primetime princess Jasmine Curtis-Smith (check out HERE), Teen Queen and Daniel's perennial partner Kathryn Bernardo gives her stand on the issue.

In a live interview on "Aquino & Abunda Tonight" on Friday, Daniel's stage mom Karla Estrada said she immediately sought to speak with Kathryn Bernardo and her mother, Min, to ask them to give his son a chance to explain when he faces them.

Recalling her conversation with Kathryn's mother asking to meet her, Karla said: "Siya ang una kong tinawagan. Sabi ko, 'Tita Min, humihingi ako sa'yo ng paumanhin sa nagawang pagkakamali ni DJ.'"

According to Karla, she went to Kathryn's home at the height of tropical storm Mario, which battered parts of Metro Manila last September 19.

"Pinuntahan ko siya sa bahay niya, dahil importante sa akin si Kathryn at ang nanay niya. Maganda ang pinagsamahan namin. Mahal ko sila," Estrada said.

"Sinabi ko sa kanya, I told Kathryn na, 'Anak, hindi ako nandito para ipilit sa'yo si DJ, pero alam ko na merong puwang sa puso mo. Kilala mo ang tunay na pagkatao ng anak ko, at gusto ko 'yun ang makita mo.'"

Asked how Kathryn reacted, she said the young actress was holding back emotions, but did not say if she was sad.

"Tahimik siya. No, [she did not cry]. Pareho kaming nagpipigil ng emosyon, pero mas gusto ko kasing bigyan siya ng magagandang mensahe," Karla said.

Explaining why she initiated the meeting, the former actress continued, "Para hindi tumagal and para bago humarap si DJ (Padilla) ay bukas na ang kaisipan ni Kathryn."

Favorite ko kasi ang movies ni Tito Carlitos, lalo na ang ‘Hihintayin Kita sa Langit’. Pero noong una, kinabahan ako kasi istrikto raw siya and a perfectionist. But he turned out be a very caring and encouraging director. Sobrang natuwa ako nang pinuri-puri niya ang acting ko.”

“Hari ng Tondo” will be released by Star Cinema in commercial theatres on October 1. It also stars Rafa Siguion Reyna, Ali Sotto, Liza Lorena, Rez Cortez, Lui Manzala, Aiza Seguerra, Eric Quizon and Lorenz Martinez.

'Be Careful With My Heart' Ends on November 28

After more than two years on air, Philippines' most-watched morning TV series "Be Careful With My Heart" will conclude on November 28 as announced by its lead stars Jodi Sta. Maria and Richard Yap.

Since it debuted in July 2012, "Be Careful With My Heart" has remained the No. 1 daytime program in the Philippines, according to Kantar Media.

The popularity of the series has also spawned a line of merchandise, a gold-selling official soundtrack album, and a wedding magazine special, among others.

The New York Festivals-nominated series was, at one point, also set to be translated into a movie. However, due to the "tight schedule" in filming the TV series, the big-screen version was eventually pulled out from the 2013 Metro Manila Film Festival.

Originally slated for a one-season run, "Be Careful With My Heart" initially centered on Maya dela Rosa (Sta. Maria) as a barrio lass with big dreams, and her love story with Richard Lim (Yap), a widowed businessman with three children.

Due to the series' popularity, it has been extended numerous times, with several "milestones" in the relationship of the nanny-turned-flight attendant and her former employer marking highlights throughout the program's run.

These developments in their love story also became worldwide trending topics on Twitter, from their first date, first exchange of "I love you's," first kiss, to Richard's wedding proposal to Maya.

Over the two-year run of "Be Careful With My Heart," Maya and Richard have gotten married, welcomed twins, and adjusted to a family life riddled with challenges.

Last July, the show celebrated its second anniversary on air with a grand concert at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City -- a culmination of sorts of the cast's world tour in the past months.

"Be Careful With My Heart" also stars Mutya Orquia, Janella Salvador, Jerome Ponce, Aiza Seguerra, and Sylvia Sanchez. It is under the direction of Jeffrey Jeturian and Mervyn Brondial.

Jodi Sta. Maria considers falling for co-star Richard Yap

"Kung wala, bakit naman hindi diba?"

This was Jodi Sta Maria's reply when asked if there's a possibility of her falling in love with co-star Richard Yap at the presscon of "Be Careful With My Heart".

The actress, however, made it clear that only if they both weren't in a relationship before the show started. As everyone knows, Jodi is happily in love with Cavite Vice Governor Jolo Revilla while Richard "Ser Chief" is happily married with two kids.

Richard and Jodi worked together for more than two years under one "roof" in ABS-CBN's longest teleserye of recent times Be Careful With My Heart whose days are numbered ending in 45 days.

So with that, what could be the themse song that would fit them? "Bakit Ngayon Ka Lang" or "Bukas Na Lang Kita Mamahalin"? Aminin,... they reallly look good together as a couple. If only....
