JODIAN in ICELAND: Pangako Sa'Yo/ The Promise/????/La Promesa/ Janjiku

Pangako Sa'Yo/ The Promise/????/La Promesa/ Janjiku has been shown in many parts of the world. Generally, to a great acclaim. But it hit a snag in its run in Peru where the notorious fake Korean "fans" surprisingly protested the showing of better-rating Pinoy teleseryes over the perennial low-rating Korean dramas (to think, they were not even pitted against each other but they were shown in the same station). This led to the muted promotions of the teleserye which gingerly tiptoed around a wide arc around the "protests" of the supposedly  "fanatic" trolls of the rating chart bottom-dwellers.

The protagonists Ian Veneracion & Jodi Sta. Maria are spending their holidays in Iceland. Fate had it that they met & made selfies with each other and published them in their Instagram accounts.

Happy New Year everybody!

Vince & Kath & James Movie Review: A Feel Good Romantic Teen Comedy With Lovable Performances From Joshua Garcia And Julia Barretto

STAR CINEMA is the home of feelgood romantic comedies. It has come up with so many films belonging to the genre, most of which are the type you can easily forget once you get out of the theatre. For the 2016 Metro filmfest, the universe conspired that Star Cinema's entry is not the annual Vice Ganda comedy they usually field but a well made romcom, "Vince & Kath & James", directed by Ted Boborol, who also did the fairly well crafted LizQuen movie last year, "Just the Way You Are".

The material is not new, about a young man who stands in for another guy in courting a girl, first used in "Cyrano de Bergerac", Edmond Rostand's play filmed in 1950 starring Jose Ferrer who won the Oscar best actor award for his role as a man who writes love letters for his friend who's inept with words. Other movies that are offshoots of Cyrano are "Roxanne" (1987), a romcom starring Steve Martin; "Secret Admirer" (1985) with C. Thomas Howell and Kelly Preston, "Whatever It Takes" (2000) starring the geeky Shane West who writes love letters on e-mail for his friend James Franco. There was even a Bollywood movie inspired by Cyrano, "Duet", and some local movies with other love teams before.

The old formula of a friend posing for another guy in courting a girl has been given a new dressing for millennial viewers in "Vince & Kath & James". Based on what they call a text serye online that attracted many followers, it's now done through text messaging and with laptops, to the tune of upbeat love songs. The stars here are two untested newcomers, Joshua Garcia as Vince and dancer Ronnie Alonte as James, plus Julia Barretto as Kath who has been given breaks before with other partners like Enrique Gil and Inigo Pascual, but was not successful.

The three characters all study in the same school. Joshua is attracted to Julia but can't voice out his feelings for her so he disguises himself as Da Vinci who writes "hugot" lines in his blog. When his cousin Ronnie, the campus heartthrob and top cager, falls for Julia, Joshua creates another character, Var, to woo Julia via text messages.

We all know how this romance will go since the material is already familiar, but in fairness to Boborol and his three screenwriters, they still manage to hook our interest by coming up with lovable characters we really care for. Both Joshua and Julia have personal issues, Joshua with his mom (Ina Raymundo) who left him in the care of his tita (Ana Abad Santos), the mom of Ronnie, and Julia with his dad (Allan Paule) who went to work abroad and abandoned her mom (Shamaine Buencamino) and their family. Both are given their own touching dramatic moments that are still light and never go overboard.

Joshua is definitely one of the best finds of 2016. A product of PBB All In in 2014 where teen, regular and celebrity housemates were combined (with Daniel Matsunaga winning), we first noticed Joshua (who's from Bauan, Batangas) in the afternoon soap "Nasaan Ka Nang Kailangan Kita" and later, in "The Greatest Love". He then did a supporting role as Daniel Padilla's cousin in "Barcelona" where he first really oozed with charisma and star quality.

He now comes into his own as Vince, shining with his very fresh and engaging screen presence and knowing how to handle both his light comic and heavy dramatic moments effectively. He'll touch your heart in that scene where he tells his mom: "Ma, ipaglaban mo naman ako." Some folks are now comparing him to John Lloyd Cruz or Alden Richards, but he's only 19 and we think he'll better off on his own. His next projects will determine whether he's really going to be a threat to the likes of the aging JLC and Piolo.

As we've said, Julia is "bawing-bawi" in this movie and it's to her credit that she even allows the script and Joshua to make fun of her "tambok" cheeks. We've always found her very charming since we saw her being introduced in the last batch of Star Magic teen talents. It's just too bad that just when her tandem with Joshua works here (the viewers were swooning with delight in their kilig scenes), she'll be paired with Ronnie Alonte in her next assignment, the new soap "A Love to Last". Well, good luck.

Giving them great support are Ina, Shamaine and Mariz Racal who is funny without being OA as Julia's best friend. As for Ronnie, he suits his role as an air-headed jock who's so BSS (bilib sa sarili) perfectly. But his acting leaves so much to be desired. He really registers more as the male version of a dumb blonde. You'd truly believe that Jeric Raval is really his dad.

The movie also pays an endearing tribute to the movie of Julia's aunt, Claudine Barretto, "Got to Believe", with the late Rico Yan (this was his last film before he passed in 2002) and directed by Olive Lamasan. And we have to take our hat off to Ted Boborol and his screenwriters for being able to make a successful and relevant connection with that romcom.

Paolo Ballesteros & Irma Adlawan In Top Acting Awards In The Metro Manila Filmfest Awards Night, 'Sunday Beauty Queen' Is Best Picture

THE SUPERB DOCUMENTARY about Pinay domestic helpers in Hong Kong, "Sunday Beauty Queens", wins the best picture award in the Metro-Manila Filmfest Awards Night held at Kia Theatre last Thursday night, produced by Viva and hosted by Mark Bautista, Yassi Pressman and Roxee B. It also won the Gatpuno Antonio J. VIllegas Cultural Award and the award for best editing.

Best director is Erik Matti for "Seklusyon". He also won last year for "Honor Thy Father". "Seklusyon" won a total of 8 awards, including best screenplay and it took home most of the technical awards, including best cinematography, production design, sound design and best theme song for "Domini Miserere". It also won a special jury prize for child actress Rhed Bustamante who really ran circles around the other members of the movie's cast and who'll never see her own performance in "Seklusyon" because its rating is R-13, meaning kids like her are not allowed to watch it.

"Saving Sally" won the best musical score award.

For the special awards, "Die Beautiful" won the best float award and my favorite movie or audience award. "Oro" won the best ensemble acting award and the FPJ Memorial Award for Excellence. The Children's Choice awards went to "Saving Sally", "Sunday Beauty Queen" and "Vince & Kath & James".

In the acting categories, Christian Bables won as best supporting actor as the loyal best friend of Paolo Ballesteros in "Die Beautiful" while Phoebe Walker won as best supporting actress as the nun with a big diabolical secret in "Seklusyon". Both of them are newcomers. Christian became very emotional in his acceptance speech, crying unabashedly as he thanked Rahyan Carlos' Star Magic workshops that honed his acting and his own mom who obviously was against his being an actor. Phoebe

was at the backstage when her name was called as she'll be performing next in a dance number. She was more composed and didn't forget to thank God, who she was fighting against in the movie.

The best actor award went to Paolo Ballesteros as the transgender Trisha Echevarria of the Bahamas in "Die Beautiful", but he was not there to personally accept his prize. Director Jun Lana got his trophy for him and said Paolo is sick.

The best actress award went to Irma Adlawan as the helpless barangay captain in a mining island where a massacre happens in "Oro". Irma was present and thanked the MMFF execom and
screening committee for bringing change to the festival, then she called the real person she portrayed in the movie, Kapitana Mercy Sueno, who thanked the producers for filming the tragedy that happened in their barangay.

Will the trophies won by "Oro", "Saving Sally" and "Sunday Beauty Queens" help to attract more crowds to these filmfest entries that are cellar dwellers? That remains to be seen but let's keep our fingers crossed for them.

Encantadia December 29 2016

Encantadia December 29 2016 Full Episode Replay

SHOW DESCRIPTION: Encantadia (2016 TV series) is a Filipino fantasy television series by GMA Network. It is dubbed as the modern requel (retelling-sequel) to the 2005 fantasy series with the same name. The show was first aired on July 18, 2016 in the Philippines and worldwide through GMA Pinoy TV.

The cast including those who will portray the sang'gres or keepers of the four gems were revealed on April 4, 2016. Kylie Padilla played the role of Amihan, Alena by Gabbi Garcia, Danaya by Sanya Lopez and Pirena by Glaiza de Castro.

It is based from the hit sineserye produced by the same network, Kung Aagawin Mo Ang Langit which stars Carla Abellana, Mike Tan and Michelle Madrigal.

Encantadia is a vast and magical continent in an "unnamed", enchanted realm. It comprises three kingdoms: Lireo, Sapiro and Hathoria. These three kingdoms, and the Lirean territory, Adamya, bear the four elemental gems that hold the continent in balance. Lireo, in the east, is the kingdom that cared for the gemstones of air and water, with its territory, Adamya. Sapiro, the northern kingdom, kept the gemstone of earth and had its lands blessed with precious metals and stones, and its soil fertile unlike any other land. Hathoria, the kingdom of the west, held the gemstone of fire and utilized it for the development of weapons and war machinery.

The three kingdoms were able to live in peace, but day came when the Hathors (inhabitants of Hathoria) gave in to their greed and started a war to claim the other gems, that they may gain power and rule over the whole continent. The Hathors first waged war with the Sapiro, in pursuit of the gemstone of earth. The Sapiryan king, King Armeo, before Sapiro's fall, was able to kill the Hathor king and claim the gemstone of fire. Sapiro, after the war, was left in ruins. While the death of the Hathor king, and the loss of the gemstone of fire, weakened the Hathor force and made them retreat. King Armeo gave the gemstone of fire and earth to his older cousin, Raquim, and willed that the gemstones be given to Ynang Reyna of Lireo for safekeeping. The four gems have not been separated since.

Years have passed and the story unfolds in Lireo, where Ynang Reyna, Minea, will choose her successor from her daughters Pirena, Amihan, Alena and Danaya. She and Imaw, an elder from Adamya, can feel imminent danger lurking, and as the gods call her to Devas, she has to leave the kingdom of Lireo in good and capable hands. She put her daughters to the test to see their capabilities and know who is best fit to be the next queen. Minea chooses and crowns Amihan, which to Pirena's dismay, led to her rebellion. The chain of events that transpired made way for the separation of the gemstones. Pirena, after having stolen the gemstone of fire sided with the Hathors and gave them back the power they've lost. Hathor now plans to rise up from hiding and bring Lireo to its demise, with the end in view of ruling over the whole of Encantadia.

Paolo Ballesteros Confesses He Really Joined Beauty Pageants When He Was In Cabanatuan Science High School

PAOLO BALLESTEROS is widely predicted to win the Metro Manila Filmfest best actor award for his role as transgender Trisha in "Die Beautiful", but he wouldn't like to put it into his head. "Hindi ko iniisip yun," he says. "Maski sa Tokyo Filmfest, wala akong expectations, pero ibinigay kaya di salamat."

His Christmas won't be complete because his 7-year old daughter Keira is no in the U.S. with her mom. "Buti nga busy ako in promoting 'Die Beautiful' so no time para ako malungkot.

Mother Lily Monteverde is so impressed with his acting in "Die Beautiful" that she signed him up to a three-picture contract. "Thanks sa pagtitiwala ni Mother Lily but alam niyang 'Eat Bulaga' pa rin ang priority ko. Sana, yung project na gagawin ko sa Regal, maging kasingganda ng 'Die Beautiful'."

He's shown joining gay beauty pageants in the movie. Has he joined one in real life? "I did, pero hindi pang-gay. Panlalaki, like yung Mr. Cabanatuan City Science High School kunsaan ako nag-aral." Does he win? "Always! Just like when I joined you Bebot beauty contest sa 'Eat Bulaga', win din ako."

If he's a transwoman in real life, who's the guy he'd choose to love him? "Siempre, ang ultimate crush ng mga ganyan, si Papa Piolo."
Is Piolo also his real crush? "Ay, hindi! Na-google ko lang yun, eh. Si Piolo Pascual daw."

Angel Locsin Wears Wig to Hide Excessive Hair Fall Allegedly Caused by a Certain Salon's Treatment

Images courtesy of Fashion PULIS reader

Photos of premiere actress, Angel Locsin, wearing a disheveled wig has spread in various social media sites. Netizens quickly speculated on the reason why Locsin was wearing the hairpiece. Disguising herself was out of the question as she gamely posed with fans.

The other plausible reason was that Locsin could be hiding her real hair. Again, some guessed that she could be hiding her hairstyle for an upcoming project. However, one netizen claims that Locsin is really hiding an alleged botched job of a salon. The said treatment caused much of Locsin's hair to fall off, leaving only a few inches.

Netizens have urged Locsin to file a suit for the damage done to her hair. Meanwhile, Locsin has yet to comment on this story, but sources say she might indeed file one.

Fashion PULIS welcomes Angel Locsin and the alleged salon for their side on the matter.

CAUTIVA/HANGGANG MAKITA KANG MULI to open in Peru's Panamericana TV

GMA was really flying high in 2016. It closes the year with the first foray abroad of its 2016 teleserye HANGGANG MAKITA KANG MULI in South America (retitled as Cautiva, Captive in Spanish). Starring Derrick Monasterio & Bea Binene, it was the story about a feral child hauled from the jungle to adapt to modern civilization by a psychology student.

It is one of the more original scripts from a recent teleserye and I was glad it was noticed immediately abroad after its recent local showing. It will replace another Pinoy teleserye,La Promesa, which will end shortly.

Sarap Diva December 24 2016 Full Episode Replay

SHOW DESCRIPTION: Sarap Diva (lit. Delicious Diva) is a Philippine Cooking show/talk show created by GMA Network. The show is hosted by singer-actress, Regine Velasquez-Alcasid and aired every Saturday morning, before the network's afternoon variety show, Eat Bulaga. Each episode, there are celebrity guests for the host to chat and cook with. It began airing on GMA Life TV instead of GMA Pinoy TV because of timeslot issues on November 3, 2012, four weeks after its original premiere, on a four-episode delay basis.

As of March 1, 2014, the show is only on a three-episode delay basis on GMA Life TV, but as was done with the very beginning of the show's airing on GMA Life TV, the musical-singing portion of Regine Velasquez-Alcasid is edited out of every episode.
