Charo Santos Concio Publishes Her Own Memoir-Autobiography, "My Journey: The Story Of Unexpected Leader" That Offers Lots Of Valuable Insights About Her Colorful Life And Successful Career

CHARO SANTOS CONCIO is well known for telling the stories of other people in "Maalaala Mo Kaya". Now, it's her turn to turn her own real life story in highly engrossing autobiography "My Journey: The Story of an Unexpected Leader."

Charo tells her own personal life starting from her being a pristine and innocent country lass in Mindoro to being a dazzling beauty queen, an internationally award-winning actress and producer to being one of the most powerful women in Philippine media. Her book is a potent combination of memoir mixed with valuable personal insights and valid advice about leadership. How does she do this? By relating, with endearing honesty, the stories she encountered throughout her life that called for her own awareness of her strengths and limitations, made her realize her failings and motivated her with a deep sense of purpose.

"My Journey: The Story of an Unexpected Leader" spans Santos-Concio's childhood up to her retirement as ABS-CBN's first woman president. Readers are given a peek into her years as a sheltered doctor's daughter in Calapan, Mindoro, where her father first taught her how to stand up to bullies; her first brush with high society, wearing a dress painstakingly assembled by her mother; the compromises she had to make—and break—when she entered showbiz, and more personal experiences which gave her invaluable lessons in strength and grace.

Television and movie fans of all kinds—be they curious about the stars, behind-the-scenes production, or business side—will find a treasure trove of information in "My Journey: The Story of an Unexpected Leader." As one of the few individuals who successfully made the transition from movie actress to producer to television executive (and made the loop to movie actress again), Santos-Concio provides industry anecdotes that are both entertaining and honest.

Part biography, part self-help, this book is unique in its take on leadership. Santos-Concio treats the subject with a nurturing tone—a far cry from the aggressive stance that many believe is the defining quality of leadership. Santos-Concio isn't afraid to admit her fears and foibles, and reassures the reader that there is power during times of uncertainty and self-doubt. While it is a treat to be given a firsthand look at the ins and outs of the lives of celebrities, equal value should be given to the lessons learned during their most vulnerable times. Santos-Concio goes the extra mile in sharing these moments with the reader, and turns them into tips that the reader can apply to his or her own life.

Some of the lessons the reader will pick up from the book are: No matter who you are or where you come from, you all have our own story. It's important that you tell and own your story because that's how you find your sense of purpose. Take your chance. Every leadership journey begins with fear, which you are invited to match with simple curiosity. If courage is hard to find, then just take a small first step.

A clear sense of purpose is what draws out the leader within you, and your heart is the best tool to find out what your true purpose and passion is. Leaders must be lifetime learners. The ability to see possibilities where others only see difficulties is a very powerful leadership skill. It is this ability that separates the visionaries from mere followers. It takes a high degree of self-mastery not to give in to your anxiety when everyone else around us offers only doubts.

When you find yourself suddenly restless and beginning to look for something more meaningful, it could be that life is preparing a new path for you. Keep your eyes and ears open for possibilities that may change the course of your life. "My Journey: The Story of an Unexpected Leader" is available at selected National Bookstore and Powerbooks outlets for only P550.

Kiefer Ravena on photo scandal: "Tripleng ingat talaga"

Kiefer Ravena photo scandal erupted and went viral in social media one to weeks ago, and as of latest update, he already filed an extortion case against a certain Kristoffer Ng, who allegedly tried to extort money from the former Ateneo Blue Eagles player and currently plays for the Alab Pilipinas in the 2017 ASEAN Basketball League.

Ng, who happens to be an alumnus as well of Ateneo de Manila University, reportedly pretended to be a woman and engaged in a "s-xting" with Kiefer, InterAksyon has reported earlier today.

photo from Kiefer's Instagram, @kieferravena15

Kiefer Ravena photo scandal has then been leaked in social media, and according to hid in the news report, the blackmailer was threatening to release more scandalous pics if the basketball star won't give him money.

With this latest development, after being mum on the issue previously, it seemed like Kiefer has indirectly admitted doing such a scandalous act with a stranger when he told InterAksyon that he'll be extra careful on what he does and on the people he's dealing with in social media: "Siguro hindi lang doble ingat. Tripleng ingat talaga. Hindi natin alam, may mga tao talagang ganyan… Kailangan lalong mag-ingat sa mundo ng social media."

I wonder how Kiefer's girlfriend Alyssa Valdez is feeling now, or how affected she is by this controversy. Does she feel like she was cheated? - Mykiru.ph

Sarah Geronimo Wisely Rejects Playing Darna, More Amenable To Doing To A Movie With Daniel Padilla

SARAH GERONIMO wisely rejects the idea of her playing the role of Darna. As she herself says, she's not fit for the role as "wala po akong boobs. Ano gusto nyo, Darnang naka-jumpsuit?" We admire her for being so honest and realistic about this. We honestly can't understand why anyone would push for her to play the flying heroine when she would be so obviously miscast in such a role!
Fans are also pushing for her to do a movie with Daniel Padilla. This after they did a duet in an ASAP production number after Daniel himself requested for their pairing.

"I found him endearing noon pa lang maging guest siya sa 'Sarah G Live' na payat na payat pa siya," she says. "Nakikita ko sa kanya yung youngest brother ko. Hindi ko akalaing darating pala ang panahong may magkaka-interest na puede kami. Na-excite ako kung anuman yun pero ang feeling ko, ang tanda ko na. Hindi naman kami puedeng gawing love team."

Sarah is 28 and Daniel is turning 22 on April 26. It's only a matter of six years and Sarah still looks younger for her age, so we don't think she'll be too "alangan" as Daniel's leading lady. If they'd do a movie and will only play as each other's older sister and younger brother, they might as well not do it at all.

And if ever they'd be paired on the big screen, this will have to wait for sometime as we all know that Sarah is doing a new movie with John Lloyd Cruz, "My Future Husband", directed by Ted Boborol, while Daniel himself is still finishing a new movie with Kathryn Bernardo, "Can't Help Falling in Love", directed by Mae Cruz Alviar. Sarah is now also one of the coaches in the latest edition of "The Voice" while Daniel is taping a new telefantasya, "Luna Sangre", with Kathryn.

No Gabi ng Lagim in Indonesia/KATHNIEL FILMS ON MNCTV: BARCELONA & CRAZY BEAUTIFUL YOU soon

Kathniel fever continues to rage in Indonesia. Two of their films will be shown soon while their 2013 teleserye Kaulah Takdirko/ Got 2 Believe is still being serialized on the same station. The title is translated as You are my Destiny. With Kathniel all over, there is no gabi ng lagim in Indonesia.

Meanwhile, I'll be off on a vacation. Pre-Holy Week thing as appetizer to a bigger one on Holy Week itself (Ya, I know, a little weird, but what the heck, I do love my vacations).  It has been very hectic in this blog so we need to recharge (now, I use my blog as an excuse). Forgive me but I will close the comments in this one, I might not have time to participate (I'm really enjoying the interaction, I have intelligent readers & I enjoy mind sword plays with intelligent people).  But I want everybody to recharge too. We have more hot issues in the backburner waiting for our "intellectual" comments.

It's Paolo Contis Who Celebrates His Birthday But It's Current Flame LJ Reyes Who Gets A Special Gift

IT WAS PAOLO CONTIS' 33rd birthday recently, but it was his current flame, LJ Reyes, who got the surprise of her life when Paolo took her and son Aki out on a date to watch their much awaited movie, "Beauty and the Beast". Both LJ and Aki were very much surprised when they found out that they're the only ones who'd watch the movie as Paolo paid the theatre for their own very private screening. No wonder LJ was very awed and pleased about it since this is the first time someone did something like this for her and her son.

She felt that she was the one who was given a great birthday gift when it's actually Paolo who's celebrating his natal day. Paolo's special note for her is even more touching: "I know how much you love this film. And I know Belle is your favorite Disney princess. So you should watch this film like one. I made sure the whole cinema is yours, so no one will distract you, except Me and Aki. Enjoy, I love you, Mahal. Love, Your Beast."

Well, here's hoping that after their failed past romances with other partners, LJ and Paolo have now truly finally found the perfect partner for each other and that their relationship will truly last forever so they can have their own happily ever after.

Tu Pug Imatuy (The Right To Kill) Movie Review: Sad Story About The Plight Of Native Aborigines Or Lumads Wins Big In Sinagmaynila Filmfest

"TU PUG IMATUY (The Right to Kill)" won the best picture, best director, best actress, best screenplay, best musical score and best cinematography awards in the recent SinagMaynila Film Festival. This kind of socially relevant film about the sad plight of ethnic or aboriginal people called Lumads is a great favorite of programmers and jurors in local film festivals who always choose them as winners, as seen in "Hunghong sa Yuta", "Paglalakbay ng mga Bituin sa Gabing Madilim", "Halaw (Ways of the Sea)", "Baybayin", "The Crescent Rising", "Riddles of My Homecoming" and "Women of the Weeping River". So when we saw "The Right to Kill", we quickly concluded that this will win big in SinagMaynila. And we were right. Jurors and serious critics don't like works with unabashed commercial elements that try to please the audience and make them laugh, like "Bhoy Intsik".

The movie is the directorial debut of Arbi Barbarona, with script by Arnel Mardoquio (who wrote and directed some of the films we have mentioned above). This is about a Manobo family in the mountains of Mindanao who become the victims of military atrocities. Dawin (Jong Monzon) and Obunay (Malona Sulatan) live a primitive but relatively peaceful life with their three kids in a small hut, barely surviving a life of penury through hunting and farming.

Dawin tells a story to his kids about how their jungles were destroyed by greedy loggers and this is evident in the despoliation of the hills and mountains around them, all deplorably bare and bald. One day, the Manobos kill a giant boar then discover later that it's actually one of the loggers.

Their youngest child dies and they bury him on a mountain top. On their way back to their hut, soldiers looking for NPA rebels abduct Dawin and Obunay. They are unjustifiably humiliated, sadistically tortured then forced to show the soldiers where the camp of the rebels can be found. You as a viewer cannot help but feel great outrage for all the indignities and physical abuse being done to the innocent couple.

They get to a community school in a distant village and the teacher is also held captive and tortured. Dawin is ruthlessly killed but the film concludes with a happy ending. Obunay succeeds in giving the merciless soldiers the violent comeuppance they truly deserve and she also gets reconciled with her surviving children.

The material is based on a true story and the real life victim is later seen being interviewed on cam as some sort of an epilogue. The film surely makes its point but, in the hands of a better filmmaker, we couldn't help but think that this could have been more engrossing and more affecting viewing. The cinematography is quite good and we truly enjoyed the panoramic vistas of the balding mountains. But the film is seriously marred by very amateurish acting, first by the soldiers, then also by the lead couple themselves.

All the actors, whether Manobos or soldiers, are obviously not trained on how to act for the camera. A more experienced actress could have done wonders in the role of Obunay and given it a more nuanced performance, specially in the film's final act which is largely focused on her (and which could have also benefited from tighter and more expert editing.) Sadly, Sulatan's face here is mostly blank, even in the scenes where she's crying but you don't get to really feel her emotions. She's lucky that there are no other female leads among the SinagMaynila entries who can give her any kind of competition so she easily won hands down.

But still, no doubt that the core material is very powerful. If there's strife in Mindanao today, it's true that it's because of the negligence of past governments, the destruction of the Lumads' traditional indigenous way of life, the unscrupulous exploitation of their natural resources for the benefit of those in power (still happening up to now with ruthless mining) and the senseless and violent atrocities committed by the military.

The havoc and strife wrought now by the NPA, the Abu Sayyaf, the Moro Liberation Front, all these would not have happened if the people in what is known as the Land of Promise were not exploited, deprived, maltreated and abused with impunity through so many years. We can't blame them if they are now fiercely fighting for their rights.

Kudos To Rep. Vilma Santos For Proposing A Very Sensible Bill In Congress That Will Help Improve The Lives Of Fishermen

VILMA SANTOS as a congresswoman got much praise for sticking to her principles when she voted no to the death penalty. Now, she continues to impress us all the more with the new bill she has filed in the present congress. This bill pushes for the approval of a national program for marine culture that would establish aquamarine farms in the shorelines of coastal towns. The current practice is for our poor fishermen to go out into the deep blue sea to fish for their daily livelihood, putting themselves so much at risk against Mother Nature and other dangers in the open ocean.

In Rep. Vilma Santos Recto's bill, barangays may consolidate fishermen as working cooperatives who will create floating cages where they can culture fish and no longer need to go out far into the open sea. In an aquamarine cooperative, they don't have to even borrow money for fuel and supplies when they sail to faraway places to fish, even in controversial fishing grounds where they even get accosted

by armed forces of other countries. Kudos to Ate Vi for taking the lives and benefits of these poor fisherfolk into consideration. May the bill be eventually approved in congress and may the tribe of responsible politicians like Ate Vi further increase! Our best wishes!

GABI NG LAGIM: The Hot Loveteam Thing turned out to be a Happy Accident after all, so what next?

We had our fun, but there are signs everything just might have been a flash in the pan. I mean, the unexpected resurgence of Pinoy young stars in many parts of the world. Kathniel. Jadine. Lizquen. We have posted the milestones of their fame all over the world in this blog (frankly, that was mainly what the blog was about). They became big in the Philippines, but fortunately, they had international appeal so off they clicked. It was fun while it lasted.

I won't debate the loveteam combinations in the Philippine setting. I have to admit I have no interest in the local dynamics. My interest sprang from my discovery that the 3 loveteams were creating inroads in many countries in different parts of the world. I scanned the blogospheres of each country to monitor their trajectories (that sprang from my love of places & languages). The only teleseryes I watched, I watched dubbed or subtitled online from a foreign  TV station's website (I still have to watch one from my TV which I rarely use anyway).

What clicks in the Philippines doesn't necessarily click outside. Anybody who joined me in my journey & learned to scan the foreign pages would attest to the varying reactions to Philippine stars. The reaction to what I called the Big 3 was special compared to the reaction to other Pinoy stars. But it seems, all indications point to the fact that the Big 3 thing might just have been accidental. Why so?

Just look at the next-in-line loveteams. True, anybody can get lucky in the Philippine setting & I really don't care if a young loveteam is created to pair a cross-eyed garbage man with an obese high society girl, they can make it for all I care. But I would be disappointed if they don't elicit anymore internationally the popularity won by Kathniel, Lizquen or Jadine in saner times. And if you have been monitoring the comments in previous articles, there's a palpable fear that the future loveteams would be disappointments. I don't need to mention their names, not worth our time. And I fear, not worth the time of the foreign fans either. We won't be following hot young Pinoy loveteams anymore in foreign lands?

As one of the comments described it: Gabi ng Lagim... in Pinoy loveteam land.

I kinda agree.

Boy who went missing twice becomes viral star after singing 'Till I Met You'

The video of a boy from Bicol singing 'Till I Met You', the theme song from the JaDine teleserye that aired on ABS-CBN for 5 months, is going viral online since it was uploaded on Facebook Sunday night, March 26.

A certain Ivan Ramos uploaded the video in his Facebook profile at 6:24 last night, sharing that the boy named Zildjian James Parma from Polangui, Albay in Bicol traveled to Manila alone to audition for Tawag ng Tanghalan Kids.

Zildjian needed money for his expenses while he is Manila, so he begged Ivan and other customers at a restaurant to let him sing for them.

And they were so amazed after hearing the Bicolano boy sing 'Till I Met You', a classic OPM hit composed and originally performed by Odette Quesada and was later revived by Kyla for the JaDine soap.

Watch and be amazed!
Ivan Ramos' video of Zildjian now has over a hundred thousand likes and shares, as many netizens offered help for the talented kid.

However, the boy's past kinda intrigued me. I tried searching for his name on Facebook and found out that he went missing twice before: first in December 2015 and secondly just last August.

Zildjian nicknamed Biboy first went missing on December 1, 2015. His father Ceasar, who works as a cable installer in Albay, called for help by posting this on Facebook:

3 days later, the father posted that his son already arrived home safe. Apparently, the boy went to Legazpi City alone and mistakenly took a trip to Pasay when he was going home.

Then just last August, Biboy went missing again and a concerned citizen found him and brought him to a police station in Pamplona, Camarines Sur.

While I am hoping his family will make sure he won't travel alone the next time, I also hope Biboy won't stop chasing for his dreams 'coz he really has an amazing talent. Best of luck to you, young boy!

WORLD-CLASS, DEFINITELY NOT LEMONADE: MORISETTE AMON & SAM MANGUBAT

A world pop superstar still has to come out of Asia.  Many can't be blamed for not trying but the honor has been elusive to Asians. It's a mystery because descendants of Asians in the West were able to make the mark: the latest was the Pakistani pride Zayn Malik but there have been lots of Filipino descendants as well who shone even earlier: Enrique IglesiasBruno MarsNicole Schlesinger, etc. We certainly don't lack good singers here, but it's just as big a mystery why many of those who became famous here even got famous in the first place. It's easy to see why nobody is eager to gamble for them to spread their wings abroad.

I have neglected OPM lately in this blog. Music is something the Philippines should be proud of. Great talent is overflowing everywhere. But I wasn't fond of what's available in the market lately. Our music business side is lame, it really needs to level up in harnessing all the wasted talent. Many times, I thought it was in the lemonade business- we were often offered the lemons.

But one afternoon of browsing some music videos convinced me Asia might finally have its first serious contender. A simply outstanding voice which got the cracks, the breaks, the hoarseness, the highs, etc. Her voice puts to shame the Beyonce, Shakira, Rihannas of the world. Her looks hint she's Asian but you wonder if there was some Latin there, or even something else, but no matter, she has enough sex appeal & delicateness to melt all your doubts.

I just hope they handle Morisette right. I still have to listen to her  sing a good original song. While I am a believer in the birit abilities of Jona, she has the looks of somebody who can be big only in the Philippines. Morisette  (frankly, she should use her family name Amon, she looks cheap relying on the echo of the name of Alanis Morisette) should be marketed a tad higher than simply a birit singer- but a pop icon.

I first saw the  2012 video of Sam Mangubat about 3 years ago. He had better looks than most of the young stars then, he definitely sang far far better, but he lingered singing covers in the web through the years while the lemons became big stars. I bookmarked this video &  I returned to watch it every now & then. Imagine my surprise when I clicked it today & I saw there were already many comments where I read he won second place in a local singing contest. So he was no longer confined to the web. He sounded fuller & surer of himself now, he should have won that contest. The winner sounded he joined  a singing contest held in a  municipal gymnasium, but that just goes to show, Pinoys still love lemonade. But we are not talking of lemonade-loving Pinoys here. We're talking of Asians becoming world icons.

People who see me in public now call me Ethan, my name in the show."
