‘Pirates Of The Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge’ Movie Review: Does The World Need Another Repetitive Pirates Movie?

'PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: SALAZAR'S REVENGE' is the fifth movie in the franchise that started in 2003 with "The Curse of the Black Pearl" (for which Johnny Depp got an Oscar nomination as Capt. Jack Sparrow), followed by "Dead Man's Chest" in 2006, "At World's End" in 2007, and "On Stranger Tides" in 2011.

Honestly, the series already has so much "umay" factor us, even if we already know what we're getting into when we get aboard. We seriously don't think the world needs another repetitive Pirates movie. But then, the previous Pirates flicks are all huge blockbusters so we're not surprised Disney cooked up another sequel after six long years.

Sorry to say though that Depp seems to be having so much difficulty trying to recapture the erstwhile mojo and twinkle of the cartoonish Jack Sparrow and his eyeliners. His star power has really waned after doing a series of flops like "Transcendence", "Lone Ranger", "Mortdecai", "Alice Through the Looking Glass" and "Black Mass", so he surely needs another hit as a slurring swashbuckler to revive his career.

In the last Pirates movie, Jack and his enemy, Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush), were looking for the fountain of youth. Now, they're after the Trident of Poseidon, a gadget that can reverse curses. Disney tries to blow new wind into this tired franchise that seriously need rejuvenation by getting Norwegian filmmakers Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg to direct it. Their film on legendary explorer Thor Heyerdahl's 1947 expedition, "Kon Tiki", got an Oscar nomination for best foreign language film in 2013. In their efforts to give new life to a worn out series, they throw everything in the book to energize, including famous Beatle Paul McCartney appearing in a cameo as Sparrow's uncle.

With new directors come a new villain. This time, Jack is up against Oscar-winning Spanish actor Javier Bardem as Captain Salazar, a pirate-hunter who got killed because of him when he was still a much younger sailor. Salazar and his crew members are all still undead in the Devil's Triangle, so they want to take revenge on Jack and also get the Trident to remove the curse on them. It should be noted that Bardem's wife, Penelope Cruz, was part of the last Pirates film, "On Stranger Tides".

New romantic young leads are also added to help pep up the movie: Carina Smyth (Kaya Scodelario), a brave and beautiful astronomer who's accused of being a witch and looking for her long lost father; and Henry (Brenton Thwaites), a handsome and reckless Royal Navy sailor who turns out to be the son of the franchise's original lovers, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley. Aboard Jack's wreck of a ship called Dying Gull, they must now sail into the high seas to locate Poseidon's powerful Trident.

The movie runs for two hours and a half and feels longer. It is a mixture of overblown, heavily choreographed action set pieces, starting with a bank robbery gone wrong in the island of St. Martin up to the attack of scary zombie sharks on the heroes and the climax which involves a new version of the parting of the Red Sea from "The Ten Commandments". There's also two long lost father and child subplots that give the movie some moving emotional resonance.

Bardem is menacing enough as the villain, just like in "Skyfall" and "No Country for Old Men". Brenton Thwaites (of "Maleficent") doesn't seem to know much of swordplay but Kaya Scodelario (best known as Teresa in "The Maze Runner") is quite impressive as the scene-stealing Carina. Given the right roles and the right push, she might be a bigger star in the future. We just don't want to see her with Jack Sparrow again. It would be wise for her to abandon ship or just walk the plank to save herself from a sinking aquatic franchise.

NO ME OLVIDES/SOMEONE TO WATCH OVER ME next on Panamericana TV Peru

The first GMA teleserye to be shown in Peru, Cautiva/Hanggang Makita Kang Muli, became the most successful Asian telenovela to be shown in that part of the world.  It's now reportedly being negotiated to be shown soon in Ecuador, Bolivia & Uruguay. It's not a surprise that another GMA teleserye is being lined up to be shown by the same Peruvian channel which first showed Cautiva in the afternoon two months ago (surprisingly, they are currently reshowing it at a more primetime slot, at 7:00 PM, just a couple of months after the end of its first showing).

No me olvides/Someone to Watch Over Me stars Lovi Poe, Tom Rodriguez & Max Collins. The teleserye has just been a finalist in the New York Festivals World's Best TV & Films.

Dear Other Self Movie Review: Jodi Santamaria Is Wasted In This Boring Film With Two Stories That Do Not Really Go Anywhere

AS A DIRECTOR, we like Veronica Velasco's hilarious absurdist comedy, "Last Supper No. 3", and the fairly touching drama, "Inang Yaya". She was not as successful in "I Do" and "Tuhog" and the same can be said about her latest effort, "Dear Other Self", which is reminiscent of "Sliding Doors" starring Gwyneth Paltrow where the story flits back and forth between two alternate realities.

In "Dear Other Self", Jodi Santamaria is Becky Macadaeg, a young woman who acts as their family's breadwinner shouldering all their bills. She is tired of her work in an ad agency and wants to just resign. She dreams of being a blogger who'll travel the world so she can experience winter and wear boots.

The film then cuts back and forth from two different scenarios. In one story, she doesn't resign but stays home, finding romance in the straight-laced Cris (Joseph Marco) who's so hostile and "sungit" in one moment then suddenly becomes all sweetness and light in the next.

In the alternate "what if" story, she goes to Thailand and finds romance in the vagabond Henry (Xian Lim), with whom she has supposedly cute scenes like a pillow fight and a water gun fight with street kids. But how can she call herself a travel blogger when all the place she visited is Thailand (which looks so dull without a visit to the sinful Phat Phong)?

Jodi gets to sport different haircuts in the film, which helps us to distinguish between the two stories which are about the choices we make in life. But the fact that it later becomes difficult to differentiate which one is real and which one is imagined makes it difficult for the viewer to relate with any of them.

The film poses the question: which is better, to stay home and fulfill your duties to your family, or follow your dreams and responsibilities as an obedient daughter be damned. In the end, it doesn't offer any answers because Jodi as the main protagonist has the obligatory happy ending and gets the two different guys in both stories.

Honestly, we don't get to sympathize with Jodi's character at all and the gimmicky plot device using two stories, that is the film's main comeon, becomes a mere cinematic contrivance that proves to offer no concrete satisfaction at all. It's just like Jodi wants to have her cake and she is able to eat it, too.

The movie offers two narratives in one, so it must be interesting viewing, but the truth is it feels like you're in Dullsville as the boringga factor is so strong in both stories that don't really go anywhere life-changing or offer anything new at all. You don't even get to know in the end whether Jodi did make a right decision and is it the right decision? And the even sadder part is that we really don't care, we just don't give a damn.

Jodi is her usual perky self as Becky but she's actually wasted in this project as even her inherently winsome charisma is not enough to save the save the shortcomings of the clumsy script. Her leading men lend some good presence but sorry to say that they just do not have much gracious chemistry with Jodi, who seems to fare better with leading men who are older and not younger than her. All in all, you'd wish you also had a dear other self and you're watching another movie instead.

Sanya Lopez Gets Biggest Break As The Solo Lead Star Of GMA-7's 'Haplos' Opposite Rocco Nacino

SANYA LOPEZ feels so lucky and blessed that after being just one of the leads in "Encantadia", she is now given a solo-starrer in "Haplos", which will be replacing "D'Originals" in GMA-7's Afternoon Prime. "I was really surprised when I was informed na may follow up project agad ako at kaming dalawa ng Rocco Nacino ang lead stars," she says. "I owe it all to Direk Mark Reyes who got me to be one of the Sanggres in 'Encantadia'. Doon talaga ako napansin ng viewers at nakilala. Before, hardly anyone notices me. Pero ngayon, kahit saan ako magpunta, kilala ako as Danaya dahil sa 'Encantadia'. Hanggang sa Canada where I had a recent trip with Rocco, Danaya ang tawag nila sa akin."

She was born Shaira Lenn Roberto on August 5, 1996. It's her Kuya Jak Roberto who inspired him to try joining showbiz. "Siya ang naunang lumabas sa show ng late Kuya Germs' na 'Walang Tulugan'. One time, sinamahan ko siya and I was asked if I want to join the show kaya napasama na rin ako roon."

How close are they as brother and sister? "Very close. Bata pa kami when our dad passed. He was 5 and I was 2 years old lang. Talagang mahirap ang pinagdaanan namin. Early on, tumulong kami sa mother namin to earn a living. Kaya ngayong pareho na kaming kumikita on our own, gusto naming ibili ng sarili naming bahay ang mama namin kasi nagre-rent lang kami ngayon. Noon, pag lumalabas kami ni Kuya, akala ng mga tao, mag-boyfriend-girlfriend kami. But dahil sa exposure namin sa showbiz, alam na nilang magkapatid kami."

So what's the real score between her and Rocco Nacino? "I owe Rocco a lot kasi tinulungan niya talaga ako while we were doing 'Encantadia'. He knows I'm a newcomer so inalalayan niya ako sa mga eksena namin. Right now, we're really good friends and I'm so happy na siya uli ang makakasama ko sa first solo soap namin, ito ngang 'Haplos'. Sana naman, suportahan kami ng mga tao."

Marc Abaya Getting Raves As The Rapist Of Janine Gutierrez In 'Legally Blind'. Is He Currently On With Alessandra De Rossi?

THOSE WHO WATCH "Legally Blind" regularly all rave about how good an actor Marc Abaya is as he's very effective in his role as the manipulative William, the evil contravida who raped and continues to harass his own brother's girlfriend, Janine Gutierrez as Grace.

"Kahit nakakabuwisit ang character niya, ang dami talagang pumupuri sa kanya," says the show's director, Ricky Davao. "May mga babae ngang lumalapit sa akin, sabi, Direk, ipakilala mo naman kami kay Marc Abaya. Sabi ko, bakit? Ang sagot ba naman, magpapa-rape kami."

"Legally Blind" is on its last couple of weeks, to be replaced on June 19 by "Impostora", so Marc's evil deeds will soon be exposed. Wonder what will be the final judgment on him and what kind of comeuppance he will be getting for causing so much suffering in the lives of the other characters.
Incidentally, we saw Marc looking cozy with Alessandra de Rossi at the final tribute to the late Director Gil Portes. Are they playing beautiful music right now?

Eat Bulaga' Needs New Blood For Their Lineup Of Hosts. Maine Mendoza's Rumored Romance With Sef Cadayona Questioned By Fans

'EAT BULAGA' needs new blood, especially now that two of their hosts are preggy, Pia Guanio and Pauleen Luna. They need a new love team now that the AlDub noontime attraction has peaked. They can tap any of the younger guys at the Kapuso network, like Derrick Monasterio or Ruru Madrid or Kristoffer Martin, all of whom are potential new heartthrobs who can sing and dance well. Then find a new Maine character to be paired with any of them to create a new love team that will attract the fans anew.

Meanwhile, now that "Destined to Be Yours" has ended, the talks linking Maine to Sef Cadayona get louder than ever. This started some months ago but Maine denied it. It came up again after Maine posted photos of her videoke singing session with her good friends Juancho Trivino and Sheena Halili, her co-stars in "Destined" that AlDub fans say are obviously taken at the home of Sef Cadayona in Paranaque.

Sef himself is not in the photos but the fans quickly concluded that it's the house of the young comedian as seen in "Dream Home" of GMA last year. But naturally, fans loyal to the AlDub love team quickly questioned and bashed Maine, calling her "malandi". Writers we've talked to about this surmise that there must really something more than meets the eye in the relationship of Maine and Sef.

In fairness to Sef, he is very quiet and oh so secretive about it, just like the time when he was rumored to be on with Andrea Torres. It's Maine who seems to be more careless. Wonder how she will defend herself this time, especially now that she is about to start making a new movie with Alden Richards.

If it would be proven that she's actually on with Sef off cam and not with Alden, no doubt that would hurt her tandem with Alden and the movie that they are about to shoot on location abroad. Maine was the special guest at Alden's hit "Upsurge" concert at Kia Theatre last Saturday. And judging from the wild reception of their fans when they did their sexy dance number, it's pretty obvious that AlDub diehards still ardently support their tandem. Now that they no longer have a primetime show, expect to see more of them in "Eat Bulaga" at lunchtime.

Tuko Films, Buchi Boy & Artikulo Uno Films Produce Need Public Support For The Serious Films They Do With Relevant Content But Little Commercial Value

WE ADMIRE TBA, which stands for Tuko Films Production, Buchi Boy Entertainment and Artikulo Uno Films, for producing films that have socially relevant content and more significant than the usual rom-coms so prevalent in mainstream local films today. They were the producers of such acclaimed films as "Heneral Luna", "I'm Drunk, I Love You" and "Bliss". All got positive reviews, but only "Luna" did well at the box office due to positive word of mouth endorsement.

When we saw these films, we also the trailers of their upcoming productions and they look like they're worth waiting for serious film aficionados. These movies include: "Smaller and Smaller Circles" - Based on an acclaimed crime novel by F.H. Batacan, this is directed by Raya Martin and stars Nonie Buencamino and Sid Lucero as two priests searching for a serial killer, also starring TJ Trinidad and Carla Humphries.

"Birdshot" - A mystery thriller about a young girl who accidentally shoots the critically endangered Philippine eagle, leading to an investigation that reveals a horrifying discovery. Directed by Mikhail Red and starring John Arcilla and newcomer Mary Joy Apostol.

"Kita Kita" - An unlikely romantic-comedy between a blind girl, Alessandra de Rossi, and comedian Empoy, directed by Sigrid Andrea Bernardo of "Huling Chacha ni Anita" and "Lorna".

"Iisa" - Directed by Chuck Gutierrez, this is a film about rebels who are victimized by a disastrous hurricane, starring Rio Locsin, Mitch Valdes, Angeli Bayani, Mon Confiado, Rocky Salumbides and Jess Mendoza.

"Women of the Weeping River" - Written and directed by Sheron Dayoc, it stars unknowns and tells the story of women in a distant Muslim community confronting a widening blood feud that stretches far back into past generations. It won best picture at the 2016 QCinema Filmfest.

All these serious films that say something valid about the human condition are definitely not mainstream and have very little chances at the local box office. Still, we admire admire the courage and guts of TBA in producing them. They would need a very big push for the ordinary local moviegoer who just wants mindless entertainment to be interested to watch them. Here's wishing they would somehow be able to recoup their investment in the making of these non-commercial movies.

Ogie Diaz on rumors about Liza Soberano playing Darna, "Wait for the official announcement"

Ogie Diaz on rumors about Liza Soberano playing Darna, "Wait for the official announcement"

Buzz about Liza Soberano donning the red suit after actress Angel Locsin was officially dropped out from the project due to health reasons started to get stronger after veteran entertainment columnist Ricky Lo wrote about it earlier this week confirming Liza as the newest Darna.

Her talent manager, comedian and radio anchor Ogie Diaz, cannot help but react on the issue. On DZMM's "Sakto" on Friday where he serves as the anchor, Diaz said that he is just waiting for the official announcement of Star Cinema.

"Sa totoo lang, isa lang ang sinasabi ko, hintayin nating mag-announce ang Star Cinema", Ogie said.

"Ayaw ko pong umepal. Ayaw ko sa akin manggaling kung ano ang desisyon nila, kung si Liza ba o ibang aktres ang gaganap na Darna," he reasoned out.

Prior to this, Ogie has also asked Star Cinema executives why it's taking them long to announce the new Darna.

"Mag-a-announce kami.' Hintayin niyo lang'", was the only reply he got.

But when asked if Liza wants to play the most coveted and anticipated role, Diaz said

"Oo, gustong-gusto ni Liza maging Darna. Totoo yan, totoo yan. Siyempre sino ba naman ang ayaw maging Darna."

Ogie  also added that if it's definitely Liza, the next thing they got is who should play her sidekick "Ding"

Sooo... does his answers already a giveaway? We'll see.

Direk Perci Intalan Says Sequel Of 'Die Beautiful' Is 'Born Beautiful', Also Praises Dominic Roco's Award-Winning Performance In 'Sleepless' As Very Relaxed, Natural

WE TELL IDEAFIRST Company's Perci Intalan, producer of "Die Beautiful" to remind their star, Paolo Ballesteros, to be more discreet in exposing his boyfriend in public. For sure, this will just affect his career adversely after he gained full stardom winning awards for "Die Beautiful", which is also a big box office hit. This might also affect the sequel they're planning for the movie.

"Hindi na naman siya ang bida sa pinaplano naming sequel kasi namatay na yung character niya," says Perci. "The sequel is entitled 'Born Beautiful', at si Christian Bables na as Barbs, ang best friend niya, ang siyang bida. Kaya lang, sobrang busy na ni Christian after 'Die Beautiful'. He's doing three movies, one shot in Biri Island with Chito Rono, tapos two movies for Star Cinema. Kasama siya sa 'Ghost Bride' ni Kim Chiu at dun sa bagong movie nina John Lloyd Cruz at Sarah Geronimo. So we're concentrating muna ni Jun (Lana) sa Regal movie namin, 'My Fairy Tail Love Story' with Janella Salvador na proposed entry sa coming Metro-Manila Filmfest."

They're also busy with the coming release of the movie they produced for QCinema, "Sleepless", which already has a cult following among local film aficionados. It stars Glaiza de Castro and Dominic Roco as two lonely insomniacs who spend their sleepless nights just conversing with each other. Dom won the QC Filmfest best actor award and the film won the NETPAC Special Jury Best Picture Prize. Did Dominic expect to win the best actor award for his role as a sad and loveless call center agent in "Sleepless", considering he was then facing tough competition with Sid Lucero in "Apocalypse Child" and Junjun Quintana in "Water Lemon".

"I was not expecting to win at all," says Dom. "Ako nga ang unang gulat-gulat nang tawagin ang pangalan ko noong awards night, so I really don't why I won."

"I think what the judges appreciated in him is his very relaxed, effortless performance as Barry in 'Sleepless'," says Perci. "Natural lang kasi siya, hindi uma-acting at all."

How was it working with Glaiza de Castro as Gem? "We've worked together before on TV so we've known each other for quite a time and we're good friends," says Dom. "Ang maganda sa 'Sleepless', hindi siya talaga romance but just almost a love story, pero makikita mo yung rapport between the two lead characters."

On TV, Dom has just finished doing "Destined to Be Yours" with AlDub and is waiting for his next assignment with GMA-7. Meantime, he's busy promoting "Sleepless" that also stars TJ Trinidad and Irma Adlawan. It will premiere on May 26 at various SM Cinemas. Don't miss its special run until June 1.

THERE HAVE been many movies about the Arthurian legend, like "Knights of the Round Table" (1953) with Robert Taylor and Ava Gardner, "Excalibur" (1981) with Liam Neeson and Helen Mirren, "First Knight" (1995) with Sean Connery and Julia Ormond, "Prince Valiant" (1954) with Robert Wagner and (1997) with Stephen Moyer, and "King Arthur" (2004) with Clive Owen and Keira Knightley. There was also an animated film, "The Sword in the Stone" (1963) based on the classic "The Once and Future King" by T.H. White, a Broadway musical turned into film "Camelot" (1967), and a comedy, "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" (1975.)

We now have another retelling of the Arthurian legend in "King Arthur, the Legend of the Sword", and the difference is that it is directed by Guy Ritchie (also co-writer of the screenplay), who had successful modernized versions of Sherlock Holmes starring Robert Downey Jr., both big hits. His version is not based on any of the previous works on King Arthur but his own take on how the legendary king of Camelot started.

It is obviously an origin story preparing for a franchise, with the ending showing Arthur building the round table where he and his knights would congregate. But the possibility of a sequel is a big IF and depends on whether this first movie will be a box office hit. And judging from the results in the U.S., it's not very encouraging. It was made with the huge budget of $175 million but has earned only $22 million so far, quickly eclipsed by "Alien Covenant" that raked in $36 million just on its opening week.

Some of the elements in past Arthurian stories are here, notably the sword Excalibur, The Lady of the Lake, Mordred, Uther Pendragon. But Guinevere, Merlin and the other knights like Lancelot and Galahad have yet to show up. To show Arthur's beginnings, we see him as a little boy who witnesses the death of his dad (Eric Bana) in the hands of his own brother, Vortigern (Jude Law), an echo of what happened to Simba in "The Lion King".

Vortigern uses black magic for his evil schemes and connives with a three-faced witch with the body of a slimy octopus with countless tentacles. He also doesn't hesitate to kill his own loved ones just to perpetuate himself in power as the King. The boy Arthur gets to escape from him by floating like Baby Moses on a small boat along the river Thames. He is later found and taken care of by ladies of the night in a brothel.

Many years later, the waters in a river recede and reveal the big rock where the sword Excalibur got stuck after Arthur's father died. All males are brought to the site and whoever can pull out the sword from the stone will be revealed to be Vortigern's missing nephew who then has to be killed for Vortigern to remain in power.

Of course, it is so easy for Arthur to pull out the sword as he is the true heir of the murdered king, so he is immediately held captive for a beheading. But there are secret forces aiming to help him, including the female magician who can control animals (Astrid Berges Frisbey), Sir Bedivere (Djimon Hounsou), Chinese George (Tom Wu) and Goosefat Bill (Aidan Gillen of "Game of Thrones"). They help Arthur escape and they then lead the resistance to bring down Vortigern.
In telling the story, Ritchie uses brief and frequent flash forwards to keep things moving briskly.

Sometimes, the style of taking narrative jumps gets too flashy and some viewers who are more used to linear storytelling might be turned off by it. For action fans, Ritchie makes sure the film is throbbing with frenetic energy with plenty of fight scenes and battle scenes. Arthur is seen fighting all sorts of giant animals in one sequence.

Visually, the film's look is a stunningly well realized Medieval setting and the special effects are spectacular and entertaining, like the gigantic elephants used in the opening battle sequence. The pacing is very fast, like the quick montage showing the boy Arthur growing up as a street kid raised by prostitutes in Londinium.

Charlie Hunnam ("Pacific Rim", "Crimson Peak") is serviceable as King Arthur, but it's as if there's a missing element in him and we can't help thinking that an actor with greater charisma would have done more wonders for the role.

Jude Law does better as the villain. He has worked well with Guy Ritchie before as Dr. Watson in the "Sherlock Holmes" films. In the 2003 movie, "Cold Mountain", Jude was the lead actor and Hunnam was playing a small supporting role. Now, the tables have been turned and it's Jude who's supporting Hunnam.
