MMFF 2014 Box Office Results - The Latest Gross Income of the 40th
Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF 2014) is now close to hitting
P800-million
10 days have passed, and the MMFF 2014 is down to its final 4 days
On track to be the MMFF 2014 Festival Top Grosser is 'The Amazing
Praybeyt Benjamin', which despite "not amazing" reviews already took
in P365-million gross receipts, as of 1PM today, January 4, 2014
according to an update from 'The Buzz' earlier
With that gross, 'The Amazing Praybeyt Benjamin' is already the 2nd
highest-grossing Filipino film of 2014 (behind last February's
'Starting Over Again'), and the 6th highest-grossing Filipino film of
all time. With just P90-million behind the all-time highest-grossing
film 'Girl Boy Bakla Tomboy', it's a big possibility that TAPB will
eventually claim that record by the end of its run (and that's if it
won't slow down in ticket sales).
It was also revealed on 'The Buzz' that 'Feng Shui 2', one of 3 horror
entries in the MMFF 2014, already has P195M as of 1PM today and as I
blog this, it has crossed the P200-million mark already, only the 5th
film to achieve so in 2014 (after 'Bride For Rent', 'Starting Over
Again', 'She's Dating the Gangster' and 'The Amazing Praybeyt
Benjamin'). Soon, it will become the highest-grossing Filipino horror
of all time, a record currently being held another Kris Aquino-Chito
Roño film 'Sukob' in 2006.
The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has no plan of
releasing official figures for each film at this point of the
festival. MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino, who celebrated his 47th
birthday yesterday, revealed however to Showbiz FM on Radyo5 92.3 News
FM this evening that the total gross sales for all 8 films as of 10th
day (January 3) is P786-million, which is sadly 3.6% lower than the
P815-million at the same point during MMFF 2013.
Looks like ticket sales for most of the entries have slowed down this
January and MMFF 2014 won't reach its 1-billion target when it ends on
January 7th. The final gross of the previous MMFF was P999,302,000.
Based on estimates that I got, 'English Only Please' starring Jennylyn
Mercado and Derek Ramsay is now among the Top 4 in the box-office.
This movie produced by Quantum Films definitely benefited the most
from the MMFF 2014 Awards Night, where it won the 2nd highest number
of awards. Since Day 4 of the festival, more screens were added for
this rom-com movie after the many recognitions it got from the Awards
Night.
I have here the ranking of the 8 official entries, based on estimated
gross collection as of this evening, January 4:
WITH P300-MILLION GROSS AND ABOVE:
1. The Amazing Praybeyt Benjamin
WITH P200-MILLION GROSS AND ABOVE BUT LESS THAN P300M:
2. Feng Shui 2
WITH P100-MILLION GROSS AND ABOVE BUT LESS THAN P200M:
3. My Big Bossing
WITH P50-MILLION GROSS AND ABOVE BUT LESS THAN P100M:
4. English Only, Please
5. Kubot: The Aswang Chronicles 2
WITH LESS THAN P50-MILLION GROSS:
6. Shake, Rattle & Roll XV
7. Bonifacio: Ang Unang Pangulo
8. Magnum Musilm .357
Tomorrow, January 5th til 7th, the last 3 days of the festival, it is
expected that day-to-day gross receipts will have a dramatic decrease
since people are either back to work or back to school.
