'Fifty Shades of Grey', the most anticipated Valentine movie of 2015, is opening today, February 11, in theaters across the Philippines, except for SM Cinemas.
An adaptation of a best-selling erotic novel, 'Fifty Shades of Grey', which stars Jamie Dornan as Christian Grey and Dakota Johnson as Anastasia Steele, won't be shown in SM cinemas because of the R-18 rating it got from MTRCB.
That's what has been confirmed to Mykiru by SM Cinemas, when I asked them days ago if they're gonna screen 'Fifty Shades of Grey' after it was rated 'For Adults Only' or for 18 years old and above only by the MTRCB. According to the statement they sent me, it has been their policy not to show R-18 movies in their cinemas.
SM Cinema Mall of Asia: "Good day. Fifty Shades of Grey will not be featured in our cinemas. Thank you."
SM Cinemas: "Hi! Because of its R-18 MTRCB rating, we won't show Fifty Shades of Grey in our cinemas. This is in accordance with the company's policy not to screen films containing themes, language, violence, nudity and s3x that may not be suitable for children below 18 years of age. For updates about the movies that will be shown in our theaters, visit www.smcinemas.com"
Even an R-16 version of the film won't be available. R-16 movies are allowed at SM, such as the one being shown now - the Jennifer Lopez thriller 'Boy Next Door'.
SM's loss is other cinemas' gain. A sure moneymaker, 'Fifty Shades of Grey' is in abundance in non-SM cinemas like Robinsons Movieworld, Ayala Malls Cinemas, Shang Cineplex, Starmall, Power Plant, Eastwood, Gateway, Greenhills and more. (Too bad. SM is the closest mall to me. I have to travel 2 hours to be able to watch the film in another mall.)
Those watching the movie should be well aware that even if it's R-18, it will still have blurrs and screen blocks, as revealed by Robinsons Movieworld in its Facebook Page. So, don't get disappointed okay? It's just fine, rather than not being shown or being totally banned here in the Philippines right?
And now that no 'Fifty Shades of Grey' at SM, this is a pretty good chance for local films to enjoy extended showing in SM cinemas and be great alternatives for FSOG this Valentine season.
Still showing at SM on its 3rd week is 'Halik Sa Hangin', which stars Gerald Anderson, Julia Montes and JC De Vera, and for the 2nd blockbuster week, the Angelica Panganiban-JM De Guzman film 'That Thing Called Tadhana'.
You can also have the foreign film 'Paddington', which also opens today, as your other option. Perfect for the whole family and fit for all ages, it features our very own Xian Lim as the voice of Paddington. - Mykiru.ph
