DIRECTOR IRENE VILLAMOR is one the young female Filipino directors we have today. The most senior among them is Laurice Guillen, followed by Olivia Lamasan and Rory Quintos, then Joyce Bernal, Cathy Molina, Mae Alviar, Ellen Marfil, Veronica Velasco, Antoinette Jadaone and now, Sigrid Andrea Bernardo of the currently showing "Mr. and Mrs. Cruz".
Other indie directors who have made their first movies are Hannah Espia, Marie Jamora, Sari Dalena, Samantha Lee, Connie Macatuno, Pam Miras, Ivy Baldoza, Maribel Legarda, Ida del Mundo. Gina Alajar has directed soaps but has yet to direct a full length film.
Going back to Direk Irene Villamor, she debuted with "Relaks, Lang It's Pag-ibig", an indie film, then followed it up with a mainstream flick with Viva, "Camp Sawi", a hit. And now, she has just finished a new movie, "Meet Me in St. Gallen", that's partly filmed in St. Gallen, Switzerland. Why did she choose St. Gallen to be the setting of her movie's final act?
"They have a quaint Christmas village and it's a charming old town in Northeastern Switzerland na bagay sa story," she says. "We shot there on the second week of last December in the middle of winter kaya sobrang lamig. The story is told in three chapters. The first two, set here in Manila. Yung una, nagkakilala sila sa isang cafe. Next is five years later and yung last chapter, set in St. Gallen, is two years later."
The movie shows the two main characters doing a lof of talking and it's reminiscent of Richard Linklater's "Before Sunrise/Sunset" movies. How different is "St. Gallen" from these movies that have cult following?
"Those great films are my inspiration. I love them all. Ang ikinaiba ng movie ko is this is my own take. As a filmmaker, you want to make your own interpretation and this is mine. May idea ako noon na series of conversations which I wrote down at umabot ng 15 pages. Nasa laptop ko lang siya and it wasn't until Bela Padilla read it and pushed me to pitch it sa Spring Films, na siya namang nagdala nito sa Viva and now, movie na siya. It's about two people, Carlo Aquino as Jesse and Bela Padilla as Celeste, who meet by chance at nagkaroon agad ng unexpected connection. First meeting nila, parehong masama ang takbo ng buhay nila. Then time passed and they're in a better place. They've changed over time and when they see each other again for the third time, they ask themselves: what will we do now from here?"
Now, let's see if "Meet Me in St. Gallen" will be as big a hit at the tills as the past offering of Spring Films, "Kita-Kita". Our personal apprehension is that we already have a surfeit of these two-character "hugot" films lately, like "12", "All About You", "Mr. and Mrs. Cruz". We just hope hindi pa nagsasawa o nauumay ang moviegoers natin with this kind of movie.

Janine Gutierrez Hurriedly Escapes From Presscon Of 'Sherlock Jr.' To Avoid Being Asked About Her Romance With Rayver Cruz
JANINE GUTIERREZ is so nice to accept her role as Irene in "Sherlock Jr." even if she knows that it's just a short special participation and her character will die a couple of days after the new series starts this coming Monday. In the story, she and title-roler Ruru Madrid are sweethearts. Both of them are also fearless investigative reporters who are willing to risk their lives in pursuing and seeking the truth in any story assigned to them.
Janine joins a beauty pageant that's reported to be tainted by corruption and immorality. She doesn't know that this assignment will put her life in great danger as she unwittingly steps on the toes of a crooked senator, played by Tonton Gutierrez. She eventually ends up dead and Ruru tries to find out who are the culprits, also endangering his own life.
Janine has a pet dog in the story, a golden retriever named Siri who is at first very hostile to Ruru and doesn't like him to be her master's boyfriend. But when Janine passes, Ruru inherits the doggie and they eventually form a good tandem in helping each other solve crimes.
Ruru then gets a new love interest in Gabbi Garcia, who plays a contestant in the beauty pageant that Janine joined. Without Ruru knowing it, Gabbi is the illegitimate daughter of Tonton Gutierrez with Sharmaine Arnaiz, the man who killed Janine and this will be one of the biggest conflicts in the story.
At the presscon of "Sherlock Jr.", two of its big stars were absent. First was Ai Ai de las Alas who plays Ruru's mom. She is said to be feeling indisposed. Then there's Gabbi who's in the hospital due to kidney stones.
Janine was present at the presscon, but she hurriedly made an exit after the cast was introduced to the press. "Tumakas agad at umeskapo dahil ayaw sigurong magpa-interview tungkol kay Rayver Cruz, kasi balitang-balita na sinagot na niya ito, pero ayaw pa lang nilang umamin," says one writer.

Richard Yap Welcomes Being Reunited With Jodi Sta. Maria And The Chance To Work With Robin Padilla In 'Sana Dalawa Ang Puso'
RICHARD YAP is glad to be back in a regular TV show in "Sana Dalawa ang Puso". "I did two films, 'Achy Break Hearts' and 'Mano Po 7', so na-miss ko talaga doing a soap," he says.
How is it working again with Jodi Sta. Maria after "Be Careful with My Heart"? "It's still the same. Masaya kasi friends na kami and we're really comfortable with each other. We just picked up from we left off. I play a different character here, so it's a new challenge for me. Pero lalo kay Jodi kasi she plays dual roles. Bagong challenge din na kasama namin ngayon ang isang Robin Padilla sa show."
How did he feel when Robin says he was initially intimidated by being the third wheel in their love team so he had to request a meeting with him first? "I think it's a way of breaking the ice for us to get to know each other better muna before we started taping. I didn't know about his concerns then, but I also sort of felt na we should get to know each other muna, so I didn't have any hesitation to meet up with him. Right naman niya to ask for a meeting kasi mas senior siya sa akin. He's thanking us but the truth is, we should be the ones thanking him for agreeing to do 'Sana Dalawa ang Puso', kasi I don't think itutuloy ito ng ABS without him."
Since Jodi is playing two characters, Richard says he doesn't think he and Robin would be fighting over her. "Sa story kasi, yung mayamang Jodi, si Liza, ipinagkasundo ng parents niya sa parents ko for us to have an arranged marriage. Siempre, we're both resisting the idea. Si Robin naman at yung isa pang Jodi, si Mona, both come from the working class. So, doon magkakaroon ng mga conflict in the course of the show kaya abangan nyo when we start our telecast on Monday, January 29 kapalit ng 'Ikaw Lang ang Iibigin'."
