Shay Mitchell proud of her Filipino roots

“I know people here are so amazing and I just can’t wait to explore.”

This is what “Pretty Little Liars” star Shay Mitchell said during a press conference held in Makati Shangri-la on Monday, December 17.

Shay, who has a Filipino mother and Irish-Scottish father, arrived in Manila to promote the third season of the suspense-drama “Pretty Little Liars,” which  premieres on ETC on January 12, 2013.

Although she has a very tight schedule, Shay is excited about “going to the islands.” She enjoys Filipino dishes such as sinigang, halo-halo, pansit and turon, which she usually eats back in Canada.

“I think I have to come back here next year to check out more places and take my family here,” she said.

Shay also revealed that her co-star Lucy Hale, who went to the country for a retail brand endorsement, had the “best things to say about the Philippines.”

Shay also cracked a joke about not being chosen to endorse the retail brand.

“Yes, what’s up with that? I’m the one half on the show! Like, really?”

She added, “I don’t know why she (Lucy) didn’t stay longer to explore the islands, but she flew in flew out. She said she had a great time and people were so wonderful. So, her experience was really good.”

On her Filipino ancestry

Shay, who is proud of her Filipino ancestry, appreciates the people’s happy disposition. She said that her friends love coming to their family gatherings, which Filipinos are very fond of.

“They love coming for family barbeques, you know the big Filipino ones in the park. They’re like, ‘When’s the next one?’ they want to be Filipino too. One thing, we’re just generally happy people and positive. Those are two good traits to have.”

After seeing the skin whitening advertisements around the city, Shay has a bit of advice to Filipinas who are “morena” like her.

“I think it’s nice that I hope girls would embrace their color because it’s a beautiful color. Trust me, many people in the world don’t have what we have.”

“Pretty Little Liars” casts Shay as Emily Fields, a gay girl who struggles over the loss of her girlfriend, Maya.

Shay doesn’t mind playing a gay role, believing that “love is love.”

“It never matters to me. I think love is love, that’s how I was raised, that’s what I believe. For me to play a character that struggles with that is so important to me. Because a lot of fans’ reactions was ‘Thank you so much for playing this character and standing up for something.’ Like I said, love is love and I wouldn’t play anybody else.

Shay also offers pieces of advice to Filipino fans who gave her gifts during the press conference. 

“I think you have to live a very authentic life and be true to who you are because that is gonna shine through. I’m comfortable with who I am and I think that’s what’s important. That’s what I want to tell other girls to have confidence with themselves.”

Jessy Mendiola eyes more projects in Korea

Kapamilya star Jessy Mendiola just can’t have enough of South Korea, where she recently had a stint for a TV network and a magazine shoot.

“Bumalik ako doon for a pictorial for a cover shoot for a magazine. Sobrang ganda ng Korea. Mas malamig ngayon kaysa noon,” Jessy said in an interview on “Umagang Kay Ganda” recently.

Jessy joined Korean Broadcasting System’s “World Date,” where she and other girls from various countries had a meet and greet with Key and Jonghyun, members of K-pop group Shinee.

Jessy shared that Koreans recognized her upon her return.  The star of “Paraiso” even got special treatment in the hotel where they stayed.

“In-upgrade pa nila noong nalaman nila na ako. Naging comfortable na ako sa Korea,” she said.

Jessy added that she wants to do more projects in Korea.

“Gusto ko pang mag-work doon. Gusto ko pang maka-trabaho ang mga Koreans doon.”

Overflowing blessings in 2012

Jessy is counting her blessings, now that 2012 is about to end.

“Sobrang saya ko kasi ang ganda ng “Paraiso,” tapos after “Paraiso,”I have a new show. So, pina-plan talaga nila. I’m very thankful for that,” she said in a separate interview with Yahoo! Philippines OMG and other members of the press at Star Magic’s feeding program on Saturday, December 8.

Jessy feels good abut the positive feedback she is getting for “Paraiso,” her teleserye with Matteo Guidicelli.

“Masaya kami ni Matteo kasi ang dami naming pinagdaanan sa project na ito. Almost a year in the making. Tapos ngayon na umere na kami at maganda ang pagtanggap ng mga tao, mas ginaganahan pa kami lalo. Sobrang close na namin. Para kaming magbestfriends or magkapatid na nagbibiruan, ganyan,” she said.

As for JM de Guzman, Jessy said they rarely see each  due to their busy schedule.

“Hindi talaga ako makalabas masyado ngayon. Kahit minsan sila Matteo nagyayaya. Sobrang busy kasi namin sa work ngayon dahil Christmas na, naghahabol na. So, walang time,” she said.

Still JM remains special to Jessy.

“JM is a very good person and very passionate. I think meron talaga siyang mararating sa life niya. Sana lang mas mag-focus pa siya sa work niya.”

Angelica Panganiban and John Lloyd Cruz Became a Couple in July

For the first time, actress Angelica Panganiban admitted that she has been in a relationship with actor John Lloyd Cruz for five months now.

During her guesting on “KrisTV” on Monday, Panganiban happily shared that she and Cruz officially became a couple last July.

Asked what made them decide to be open about their romance now, Panganiban said: “Actually siya talaga 'yung mas vocal, mas open. So sabi ko for a change, try natin. Feeling ko noon, baka naman puwede kong ipagdamot ito, hayaan lang muna ako i-enjoy. So ngayon na na-enjoy ko na, oh sige sali na kayo. Sabi nga nila, happiness is best when shared.”

Panganiban said she did not hesitate to let Cruz into her life because she is sure from the start that she likes him. “Hindi na ako nagpakipot. Bakit ako magpapakipot, alam ko namang gusto ko siya?” she said.

“Sobrang bait. Noong anniversary nga namin sa ‘Banana Split,’ may pakain siya sa amin, may flowers siya sa aming lahat. Ganoon siya. Mahal niya lahat ng mahal ko,” she said.Meanwhile, the actress shared how lucky she feels to have Cruz as her partner.

“Okay siyang makisama lalo na sa pamilya ko, sila mama and 'yung lola ko. Sobrang favorite siya ng lola ko grabe. Kasi may dementia 'yung lola ko. Kapag nakikita niya ako, hahanapin niya agad si John Lloyd. So nung blessing nung bahay, buong araw niyang hinahanap sa akin,” she added.

Panganiban said another thing that she likes about their relationship is that they never fight with each other.

“Ang away namin, pikunan lang kasi mahilig 'yun mang-amoy ng kili-kili. Siyempre minsan naman tama na, naiinis na ako. Kalabit ng kalabit hanggang sa umiyak ako sa pikon. Ganoon lang kami mag-away,” she said.

Rumors that something romantic is blossoming between Cruz and Panganiban started after the two returned to the Philippines from Vietnam in April to shoot their scenes for the Star Magic movie "24/7 in Love."

But it was only last August 12 when Panganiban posted a collage photo on Instagram where she went public for the first time in hinting that there is something happening between her and Cruz.

Panganiban and Cruz's first public appearance together was at the Star Magic Ball last September 1, where they were even seen leaving the event hand in hand.

On December 25, the country's hottest "it" girls Heart Evangelista, Solenn Heussaff, Bianca King and Rhian Ramos come together for Sosy Problems, the glossiest entry of GMA Films to this year's Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF).

Four girls, rich and famous, may have the most expensive pairs of shoes, high-end designer bags and the life that every girl wanted - but behind the glitz and glamour are the struggles and differences that they have to face.

In the story, Sosy girls' tambayan, The Polo Club, is in danger of being torn down. The new owners of the exclusive club want to build a "yaya mall" - which for the girls is not at all a Sosy plan.



Meet the Sosy Girls.

The spoiled-rich daughter of a hotelier and self-appointed leader of the Sosy group, Lizzie (Rhian Ramos), proposes a planking protest to stop the bulldozers from rolling. But she gets in trouble and as a way to get back to the good graces of their family's matriarch; she has to do one thing - to live with her poor relatives. Having the luxuries and comfortable life that she has, will she be able to survive the living conditions in the province?

Then there's Danielle (Bianca King), the daughter of an ex-politician who's in the process of impeachment wherein all their assets were frozen. She is still in denial that they now are not part of Manila's richest. Until when will she be able to cover up their financial struggle? What if she meets the guy who will love her for who she is, will she be courageous enough to accept her real status or will she stick to her plan of looking for a rich guy who can save them from financial difficulties?

Completing the Sosy Girls are frenemies Margaux (Solenn Heussaff) and Claudia (Heart Evangelista), daughters of former beauty queens who have had a long standing unfriendly competition. What if they found out that each of them is running after the same man, Benjo (Aljur Abrenica), an all-around employee at the Polo Club? Will their friendship end just because of a guy? Will someone be brave enough to give up love for the friendship?

Can our Sosy girls patch over their differences to save their friendship and the much-loved tambayan? Will they ever realize that their friends, family and loved-ones are more important than the riches and luxuries in the world?

Under the helm of Director Andoy Ranay and with Marlon Rivera as the script consultant, Sosy Problems is the official entry of GMA Films to the Metro Manila Film Festival 2012.

ABS-CBN Publishing’s ‘Vault’ wins Asia’s Best New Magazine

ABS-CBN Publishing's Vault, a lifestyle magazine for the modern, sophisticated man, was named winner of Best New Magazine at the 2012 Asian Publishing Awards (APA), held recently in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It also received an excellence award in the category Best in Design, Layout and Presentation.

The Asian Publishing Awards recognizes best multimedia practices in magazine, book, and corporate communications sectors. This year, the APA winners were culled from a strong field of 157 entries involving 34 media companies from 8 countries.

Piolo Pascual Explains the Story Behind the Picture with Maja Salvador

Nilinaw ni Piolo Pascual ang kwento sa likod ng lumabas na litrato nila ni Maja Salvador na akmang naghahalikan sa loob ng kotse ng actor. “I was coming out of a run sa Sunlife last week tapos nag-Star Magic gives back concert kami. Nagkwento si Piolo Pascual tungkol sa kanyang pinakabagong proyekto sa telebisyon, ang Apoy Sa Dagat kung saan kasama niya si Angelica Panganiban. “Nakakaoverwhelm. Its something new, something different. My role is Ruben, isa akong mangingisda dito na naampon natin si Angelica, si Rina. Matteo Guidicelli Has No Problems With JM de Guzman

Actor Matteo Guidicelli denied rumors that there are growing tensions between him and actor JM de Guzman.

This comes after de Guzman reportedly got jealous of Guidicelli because of his several intimate scenes with actress Jessy Mendiola on the ABS-CBN television series “Paraiso.”

Mendiola and de Guzman have been vocal about their admiration for each other for quite a while now.

In an interview with “The Buzz” on Sunday, Guidicelli said he thinks there is no problem between him and de Guzman since they also know each other personally.

“Marami kaming mga intimate scenes ni Jessy, no doubt about that. Maraming mga love scenes. Ako rin when I watch it, parang wow. Pero JM is a really nice guy. We were together sa isang run, he’s a very nice guy and I don’t think there is a problem,” he said.

Guidicelli, however, could not give a definite answer when asked if he is planning to court his “Paraiso” leading lady.

“We’ll never know kasi parati ko siyang kasama araw-araw. Anything can happen. Focus muna sa show,” he said.

Meanwhile, the actor-athlete maintained that he is not trying to win his former girlfriend Maja Salvador back.

Guidicelli said he and Salvador are just good friends now and he is happy that they get to keep their friendship after the separation.

“Maja and I, what I am very happy about is that we are still talking. We are good friends now. That’s the most important thing because I don’t believe in ruining relationships. I don’t believe in throwing out memories. I don’t think that’s right,” he said.

Despite what happened to them in the past, he said Salvador will always be in his heart.

“I also learned so much from her. Masaya lang ako ngayon na magkaibigan kami and I’m happy for all her success right now,” he said.

Guidicelli added he also won’t mind if his former girlfriend gets linked to actor Piolo Pascual.

“Piolo is a really cool guy. We train together, we do triathlons together. He is a nice guy. I trust him. Wala naman, there’s nothing to be jealous about. Walang problema [kung ma-link sila]. Mabait naman si Piolo at Maja,” he said.

After 'Segunda Mano,' Dingdong Dantes and Kris Aquino Compete in MMFF

After starring as a couple in a film entry in last year's Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF), Kris Aquino and Dingdong Dantes will separately topbill competing movies in the 38th edition of the annual film fest.

The Kapamilya actress, 41, and the GMA-7 talent, 32, previously starred in the horror film "Segunda Mano," which earned Dantes his first Best Actor win for a movie.

In this year's MMFF, the two will star in competing films. Aquino performs in the comedy flick "Sisterakas" along with Ai Ai delas Alas and Vice Ganda, while Dantes joins Kapamilya talents anew in the romance-drama film "One More Try".

"I texted him... I told Dong, sabi ko sa kanya, nakaka-proud, kasi this time, it's a full dramatic vehicle," Aquino told reporters after the press conference for "Sisterakas" last Saturday.

Directed by Ruel Bayani ("No Other Woman"), "One More Try" tells the story of Grace (Angel Locsin), a single mom who is forced to reconnect with her son's biological father Edward (Dantes) to save the boy from a worsening rare blood condition.

The source of the cure: a biological sibling to Grace's son, who must be naturally conceived.

In a situation where a child's life is at stake, Grace and Edward's respective relationships -- she has found love anew with Tristan (Zanjoe Marudo); he is married to Jacqueline (Angelica Panganiban) -- take a turn for the worse, as unwanted feelings from the past start to resurface.

"I texted Angel and Angelica," Aquino said Saturday. "Kasi after I saw their trailer, sabi ko grabe, lalo na 'yung kay Angel kay Zanjoe, 'yung 'Mahal kita pero mas mahal ko ang anak ko,' sobra."

"[Sinabi ko kay Angel,] 'Considering wala kang anak, kung ako 'yun, trailer palang naiyak na 'ko,'" Aquino added.

Directed by Wenn Deramas, "Sisterakas" will be released under Star Cinema and Viva Films. Likewise, "One More Try" will be released under the ABS-CBN film production outfit.

"It's easy to wish them well," Aquino said, referring to the romance-drama film. "Because two very different genres kami, and obviously they will be in the R-13 category, because of the theme."

Albie Casiño Speaks Up in The Buzz

Actor Albie Casiño admitted he feels misunderstood most of the time ever since he entered show business.

In a live interview with “The Buzz” on Sunday, Casiño said most people tend to judge him only based on what they have read or heard about him.

“What people think of you is only what they understand of you eh. Ever since I got into showbiz, I tried to keep my personal life private. I understand din also why people judge me like that is because they only know what they see. They don’t really know me naman talaga,” he said.

While the young actor has been through a lot after joining showbiz, he said the most painful thing for him was see his family get dragged into the controversies.

“Through all of this, nadamay my mom, my dad, every time you hear Casiño masama na ang tingin mo. It’s not like that naman eh. We are very close. When one of us is having a hard time, we really get behind that person,” he said.

The teen actor said he would forever be grateful for his parents and brother, who stood by him through difficult times.

“I can’t say it in words. Hindi ko mae-express in words kung gaano ako ka-thankful sa magulang ko and sa brother ko. Nandito ako ngayon dahil sa kanila. Mama, thank you. I know that you have all the best intentions for me and sometimes hindi ako nakikinig. But I promise now to try to be a better son. Thank you and I love you,” he said.

Meanwhile, Casiño said he would love to work with his “Mara Clara” co-stars again, particularly actress Kathryn Bernardo.

“I’m very proud of her now. I saw a magazine last night that she’s the cover. She’s really pretty now. I don’t regret much eh because there is no use thinking about what could have happened, what should have happened,” he said.

Kris Aquino Says Ai-Ai dela Alas and Vice Ganda Both Close to Her Heart

Television host and actress Kris Aquino denied that she had a rough time when her "Sisterakas" co-stars, actress Ai Ai delas Alas and comediane Vice Ganda, were not in good terms with each other.

Delas Alas and Vice Ganda both admitted that they had a misunderstanding although this was also eventually resolved -- well before the movie was announced.

In an interview with “The Buzz” aired on Sunday, Aquino said her relationship with the two box-office stars are different but she stressed that both are close to her heart.

“Sobrang tagal na kaming magkakakilala and iba 'yung bonding talaga namin and hindi mo na siya madadagdagan. Ang masasabi ko na lang, na-solidify,” she said.

While Aquino considers Vice Ganda as her constant “movie date,” delas Alas, on the other hand, is like a big sister to her.

“The difference lang kasi is that si Vice kasi mayroon kaming ongoing na siguro magdadalawang taon na bawat may showing na pelikula na Tagalog, kaming dalawa talaga 'yung sabay na nanonood talaga,” she said.

“Kay Ai kasi, ang dami na naming pinagdaanan together. Parang isa ko na rin siyang ate talaga kasi buong pamilya namin, we consider Ai Ai talaga as part of the family,” Aquino explained.

For the TV host, their maturity plays a big role in their friendship.

“Ang maganda sa aming tatlo, at this point of our lives, marunong kaming magsuportahan talaga at magbigay ng moment sa isa’t isa,” she said,

Kris Aquino's Son Hates Robin Padilla

The son of Kris Aquino with star cager James Yap is harboring "hate" towards the Kapamilya host's latest leading man.

Even onscreen, Aquino's pretend romance is a matter of concern for James Yap, Jr., more popularly known by his nickname "Bimby."

Aquino said Bimby is "affected" and "heartbroken" by any hint of a new love life for his mom.

Referring to the upcoming comedy film "Sisterakas," where she portrays a villainous business tycoon, Aquino said, "Dito tuwang-tuwa nga siya (Bimby) dahil walang ka-love team, walang ka-eksena."

In her upcoming romance-drama series, however, the same isn't the case.

In "Kailangan Ko'y Ikaw," Aquino and former real-life boyfriend Robin Padilla portray a married couple, Roxanne and Bogs.

"Nanood [si Bimby] ng taping namin," Aquino told reporters shortly after the grand press conference for "Sisterakas" held Saturday.

"Ang nakita niyang scene kasi was a 15th wedding anniversary scene. Obviously may halik. Hindi siya naka-get over talaga, kasi ang bukambibig niya, 'Mama, I really hate Robin Padilla because he's stealing you from me,'" the actress added, laughing.

According to Aquino, 41, Bimby even went to tell "everyone" about the kiss, including the "Kris TV" host's brother, President Benigno Aquino III.

For his part, Padilla has assured the 5-year-old that the kissing scene is just pretend. "Ang sabi niya, 'Bimb, it's just acting, it's not real life.' Napapa-English siya," Aquino said.

"Tapos nagsuntukan na lang sila, hindi pa rin sila okay," she added, laughing.

Bangs Garcia Cries, Fears Losing Brother

An emotional Bangs Garcia opened up to "Showbiz Inside Report" on her relationship with her younger brother, whose condition, she fears, may cut short their time as a family.


In an interview with the entertainment talk show aired Saturday, the Kapamilya actress pointed to her brother Javriel as her motivation behind being in showbusiness.

Endearingly called "Ayi" by his family, Garcia's brother, 23, is with Down syndrome.

"Sabi nila, anytime daw kasi, pwede raw siya mawala. Everytime I get to be with him, I see to it na sobrang happy siya," said Garcia, who turned emotional during the interview.

While the "Kung Ako'y Iiwan Mo" star lives in Manila, her family, including Ayi, are based in Davao.

"'Yun ang kinakatakutan ko. Hindi ko ma-imagine 'yung life without him, kasi sobrang mahal ko 'yung kapatid ko," added Garcia, who is third of four siblings.

According to the 25-year-old actress, she was initially motivated to join showbiz to help with her family's expenses. She recalled her being cast in the action series "Palos" as a blessing, as it was then, in 2008, when her father's leather manufacturing business had started to decline.

Garcia's thriving showbiz career prompted her to be based in Manila. This meant spending less time with Ayi.

"He's very, very sweet, palagi syaing nag-a-'I love you' sa 'kin. Sa 'kin siya parati sumusunod, sobrang mahal na mahal niya ako," she said.

"Na sa Davao siya eh, so everytime na nandito siya sa Manila, lahat ng gusto niya sinusunod ko, binibigay ko, kasi minsan ko lang siya nakakasama," Garcia added.

This Christmas, the actress shared, she will bring Ayi to Hong Kong Disneyland -- his first trip out of the country.

"I think that's the reason why I'm in showbiz, why I'm breathing right now," the actress said, referring to Ayi and their family.

She also underwent language and personality development trainings, took crash courses in sociology and philosophy, and even perfect the way she projects herself in front of the camera. ABS-CBN’S CHRISTMAS CAMPAIGN - BUY A PAROL AND HELP A KAPAMILYA

ABS-CBN stages a widespread campaign to help disaster-affected Kapamilyas by selling parols, a Pinoy Christmas icon, to jive with this year's theme "Lumiliwanag ang Mundo sa Kwento ng Pasko".

By purchasing a "Kapamilya Parol" whose central icon was designed by kids orphaned during the Typhoon Sendong, buyers are taking part in an effort to help disaster-affected Kapamilyas as all proceeds will be donated to Sagip Kapamilya, ABS-CBN Foundation's  project that provides relief to affected communities of disasters, as well as rehabilitation and disaster risk reduction projects.

Sagip Kapamilya will be allocating "Kapamilya Parol" funds to the families directly affected by the recent calamities of 2012, including orphaned children who are under the continued care and assistance of Sagip Kapamilya.

Buyers can hang these parols in their homes but it can also be donated to less fortunate families through the ABS-CBN Online Store at abscbnstore.multiply.com. MasterChef Top 14 Gear Up for Tougher Cooking Battle

A nationwide search has brought together the best 14 cooks from different backgrounds and ages who are gearing up for a tougher culinary competition with eyes on the same prize: becoming the first ever Pinoy MasterChef.

The road to the crown and the P1 million grand prize has officially begun for the top 14 cooks of MasterChef Pinoy Edition who, from now on, will be living in a single house. Who among them will get along well? Who will stand out?

Making the cut is Betty, the Loyal Kusinera of Cebu, who has been working as a house help since she was 18 to provide for her siblings and take them to school. Her employers, who have treated her as family for 15 years now, have been enthusiastic about her stint in the kusina-serye.

Carla, the Negosyante Kusinera of Bulacan, married at such a young age that she needed to learn how to cook for her family. She refined her skills in the kitchen and eventually began accepting orders from friends to prepare crispy pata and roast chicken, which are both her specialties.

Next on the list is Cons, the Kitchen Siren of San Juan, who once auditioned in Pinoy Dream Academy to become a recording artist. A disease, however, damaged her voice and deterred her from reaching her dreams. This set off her love affair with cooking and has since then vowed to master cooking.

The Biba Kusinera of Davao, Gian, has struggled with his own insecurities and his family’s expectations from him as the first born son. Gian, who is also the youngest finalist in the competition at 20, grew up believing his father never approved of him because of his homosexuality.

Ivory, a nurse, has always been pushed by her parents to become a doctor. Her love for cooking proved potent enough that she abandoned the medical field to pursue her culinary passion.

For band vocalist JR, winning the Pinoy MasterChef title also means winning his dream wedding with his girlfriend. The Rakistang Kusinero of Benguet also wants to use the cash prize to support his child from a former partner whom he has not seen in years.

Lilibeth has struggled to make ends meet as a housemaid ever since she separated from her live-in partner and the father of her two children. She joined the kusina-serye to provide a better life for her and her family.

Also striving to work hard for his family is Mac, the Kitchen Mac-Kulit of Tarlac, whose marriage and relationship with his children ultimately suffered while he worked as a seaman abroad. Now separated from his wife, Mac has returned home for good to take care of his kids.

Maureen, the Loving Nanay of Kusina, joined MasterChef to help in paying for her two kids’ medical bills. Both of them suffer from G6PD, a fatal disease that could cause hemorrhage to an affected person who eats certain foods he is allergic to. Maureen’s husband is their family’s sole breadwinner as she intends to look after the kids.

Melissa, 51, is the oldest among the finalists and is regarded by the group as their mother figure. Will the considerate Cooking Momma give way to others or will she fight for the grand prize until the end?

Also pulling out all the stops to become the first ever Pinoy MasterChef is Myra, a working class mom who wants to be recognized as an excellent cook. The Chef Accountant of Muntinlupa first worked her way around the kitchen when she was still little and cooked for her siblings and parents.

Also entering the Top 14 is Reggie, the Romantic Kusinero of Laguna, who admits he always gets dumped by girls. He says that he wants a girlfriend who is not so good at cooking so he could satiate her with his dishes and love.

Ronnel, meanwhile, grows vegetables in his backyard and cooks over an open fire using twigs. The Boy Labong of Pampanga’s family survives on income from his humble sari-sari store business.

Sorsogon’s Chief Cook of Police, Tolits, wanted to take up Fine Arts in college but was not able to because his family couldn’t afford it, and it was only in cooking where could express his passion for art. He eventually joined the police force and now aspires to put up a small restaurant to support his family.

Coco Martin Turns Into Superhero in New Fantaserye

In his upcoming fantaserye "Juan dela Cruz", Coco Martin will portray the latest in the lineage of the "Tagapagbantay." Bearing a holy cross that can shift into different weapons -- a whip, a staff, an arrow, and a sword -- the 31-year-old actor's character will battle the forces of evil.

The twist: He also bears "aswang" blood.

According to the debut trailer for "Juan" shown Wednesday night to advertisers, the new Kapamilya soap is from the makers of the top-rating series "Walang Hanggan" and "May Bukas Pa."

Like the inspirational 2009 drama series, "Juan" also aims to impart values anchored on faith in God.

In the trailer for "Juan," the character of Mylene Dizon in the soap, Amelia, lays out the means to combat the "aswang" blood of Martin's character. "Kailangan palakihin natin siya sa kabutihan, na may pagmamahal sa kapwa, at pananampalataya sa Diyos," she says.

"Ito naman hinahandog namin para sa kabataan, sa pamilya, sa mga nanay, tatay," Martin said Wednesday night. "Sana suportahan parin nila tulad ng suporta nila sa 'Walang Hanggan.'"
