Piolo Pascual admitted he has always admired Toni
Gonzaga as a person and as an actress. But while they did go out once,
he didn’t pursue her anymore after that.
"I remember nanood kami ng concert ni Kuya Gary (Valenciano) sa
Araneta. But right there and then, I realized and I thought to myself na
it’s too unfair para harangin mo or pigilan mo yung pangarap niya to
become a certified actress. Gusto niya muna makilala bilang Toni
Gonzaga, so nagparaya tayo," Piolo said at the press conference of Star
Cinema's upcoming Valentine presentation, "Starting Over Again."Giving way
Piolo added that he wanted Toni "to shine on her own." And true enough, ever since Toni transferred to ABS-CBN, she has been doing shows one after the other and has become one of the most in-demand TV hosts today.
"Mahirap kasi kung may boyfriend-girlfriend ka, mahirap to do a lot of things, to juggle things all at the same time. So, kailangan mong bigyan ng chance ang isang tao, especially since she was starting out then, na bigyan mo siya (ng chance) to prioritize her time.”
Piolo is happy for Toni, who is in a long-running relationship with director Paul Soriano.
"I believe that everything happens for a reason and you don’t waste the years. Seven years for a boyfriend na alam ko namang seryoso sila (Toni and Paul) sa isa’t isa. So, you just shrug it off, and you can just only pray (for them)."
The two first worked together in a softdrink commercial where Toni became popular for the line "I love you, Piolo!" For a time, people she met in public called her “I love you, Piolo.”
Toni and Piolo’s current teamup is a dream come true for them.
"I guess more than being worth the wait, tama yung timing kasi sa ASAP magkasama kami. Every time we ask each other kung pwede kaming magkasama, laging may humaharang. I don’t know kung anong force but it just wouldn’t materialize. I think it just fell into place,” Piolo said.
Under wraps
While Toni is happy with her relationship with Paul, Piolo seems content with rumored girlfriend Shaina Magdayao.
"I’ve always been vocal din naman that I want to be able to spend time with her and I want to be able to do other things."
Piolo now wants to keep his personal life under wraps. More than a year after he and Shaina were romantically linked, the two celebrities would rather keep mum about the real score between them.
"I think at this point of our lives, we want to be able to have that respect. Pareho naman kaming yung former (relationship) namin (Piolo with KC; Shaina with John Lloyd Cruz), parehong exposed. Parehong alam ng lahat. So, parang this time, kung saan man magli-lead iyon, we don’t want to pre-empt.”
