“I suggest that she sing Barbra Streisand’s ‘Somewhere’. It’s a simple, yet versatile and challenging song. It’s appropriate for her age. And it can showcase the versatility of her voice because the song requires dynamics. It can be arranged as an RnB song although it’s Broadway,” Jamie relates.
She should know. Jamie has sat as judge in many singing talent searches like “Bulilit Star Quest” and “Diz Iz It.” Her latest judging stint is TV5’s upcoming nationwide musical search “Kanta Pilipinas.”
Jamie has gone to Cagayan de Oro, Davao, Iloilo, Baguio, Batangas and other places in search of the best candidates for “Kanta Pilipinas.”
And she has come up with certain conclusions about today’s young, aspiring singers.
Sound-alikes
“The problem with some of them is pare-pareho ang style nila. Wala pa akong narinig na walang ginaya, which is understandable kasi may peg sila. May idol sila,” Jamie states.
Among these pegs, she goes on, are Adele, Whitney Houston, Charice, Jessa Zaragoza, Lani Misalucha, and the Aegis band.
Jamie sees nothing wrong with that—at the start. After all, she herself admits copying Kuh Ledesma and Barbra as a newcomer.
“But once you have your original song, that’s when you gain confidence to have your own style. That’s when the song adapts to the singer, not the other way around,” relates Jamie.
She has good news for Filipinos overseas who want to join “Kanta Pilipinas,” which will send chosen singers in a training camp before featuring them in the show which starts airing in July.
“Auditions are still open through the internet. But chosen candidates must go to the Philippines for the contest.”
Radio Veritas theme
Meanwhile, Jamie revealed that Radio Veritas has tapped her to sing the station’s new theme. The song, like Jamie’s hit, “Jubilee.” targets the young, an audience the station is reaching out to in its bid to erase its politically-charged image.
“I recommended new instruments and gadgets that will appeal to today’s generation,” states Jamie.
The station has also introduced live streaming to attract more young listeners “who can chat with the station’s doctors, psychologists and brothers” if they have problems.
The CMMA (Catholic Mass Media Awards) Best Inspirational Song winner (for the “Sa ‘Yo Lamang” soundtrack, also named Best Inspirational/Religious album at the most recent Awit awards) is just as proud of her newest gold record honors from the Awit, courtesy of her album “Inspirations.”
As record producer, Jamie has released Fatima Soriano’s inspirational album. Jamie is now wrapping up work on an upcoming album with Jose Mari Chan and other artists. It is here where Jamie sings child-oriented songs like “Jesus Is My Best Friend” and “A Mother’s Prayer.”
