“In general, I chose them because feeling ko meron silang dating. Yun talagang gusto nilang mag-artista at manalo at makikita naman sa attitude nila. Kung hilig nila at may talent na sila then when I help them, I’ll just be enhancing them because meron na silang tools,” explained Roderick.
The revelation of his protegees is just the easy part because the “serious battle” of the artista search is just beginning. He knows that the knowledge, trainings, experiences and wisdom that he imparts on them would be important for them to make it to the finals or even win but the victory will still depend on how they make use of what he has given them.
Whether one of his “mentees” win or the other mentor’s protégées, his wish is that the winner would shine and become a star with longevity.
What’s wrong with the new breed of artists?
In a recent interview, he said that the dilemma of today’s showbiz is the influx of many aspiring artistas. He said that out of 100, maybe one would make it but for a short time and then another would be chosen from a 100 more hopefuls.
He recalled in that interview that the culture he grew-up with in showbiz was far different from today’s generation. For an example, he mentioned Mother Lily Monteverde who knew how to handle his career, take care of him and paved the way for his career’s path. Their training and discipline were key to their having star-qualities and longevity plus the many movies they made then “immortalized” and turned them into stars.
If he, Vilma Santos, Lorna Tolentino, Maricel Soriano, and even his co-mentors Phillip Salvador, Gina Alajar and Ricky Davao are considered pillars of local showbiz, it’s because they weren’t focused on just being stars but on longevity.
Their goal then was to keep learning and honing their crafts and for him the most important aspect of being stars is “taking care of their personalities and integrities.”
Something HOT on Sunday TV viewing
“Protégé” can be called a break from acting for Roderick. He came from GMA7’s high rating dramatic soap opera “Munting Heredera.” He admits that he likes taking on new shows like “Protégé.” Another GMA7 show that will bring back the actor to TV hosting is “Hot TV” which will premiere on Aug. 5. He was part of the showbiz talk show “Showbiz Linggo” several years ago.
