Jed doesn’t see anything wrong with foreign artists performing in the country, since he himself loves watching shows of international acts. But he admits foreign acts give OPM artists a new challenge when it comes to getting support from local concert viewers.
“Sa totoo lang, oo, sobrang hirap kase kapag foreign artists, tickets nila mahal. And people will really save up to watch foreign artists. Ako guilty ako diyan, fan ako ng concerts so I watch all the concerts na kaya kong panoorin,” Jed said at the press conference of “Icons at the Arena: Masters of OPM” on Wednesday, May 30 at SM Mall of Asia Arena.
He joins OPM bigwigs in “Icons at the Arena: Masters of OPM” on June 16. The show celebrates Filipino music and formally opens the SM Mall of Asia Arena. The star-studded concert also features Lea Salonga, Gary Valenciano, Martin Nievera, Jose Mari Chan, Zsa Zsa Padilla, Ogie Alcasid, Regine Velasquez, Basil Valdez, Freddie Aguilar, Christian Bautista, Erik Santos, Juris Fernandez, Jed Madela, Piolo Pascual, Bamboo, Arnel Pineda and The CompanY. They will be paying tribute to OPM legends such as Ryan Cayabyab and George Canseco.
'Sad and difficult'
Jed finds it “sad and difficult” that some Filipino concert goers would rather save money to watch pricey international acts than to go to a local concert.
“Siyempre, kapag Pinoy iipunin na lang yung pera para mapanuod si Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Bruno Mars kase minsan lang naman sila anito. Kase yung mga local artists parati naman sila andito, nakikita natin sa “ASAP.” But, you know, for us artists, it’s sad. It’s difficult.”
“Ang pinaka-plea naming mga local artists, it’s not bad to support international acts because it’s also good for us to see how it is done, pero sana kung sumusporta tayo ng international acts, sana suportahan rin natin yung local acts,” he adds.
Studying offers
Jed revealed that his contract with Universal Records expired last May 21. He hasn’t signed up with any record label yet and is still studying offers.
Jed said that he is in good terms with Universal Records and his decision not to renew his contract has nothing to do with his wish to release more original songs.
“With Universal, it’s a joint effort with regards to the album na ilalabas. Of course, there’s compromise. Personally, I love to release ne materials, but we also have to think of business side na kailangan rin nating bumenta. It’s not part of my decision to renew, na hindi ako happy. Whatever I asked naman from Universal, nabibigay naman nila.”
