“Okay lang naman kasi magsupport ng foreign. Pero sana kasi ang i-prioritize, yung sariling atin. Eh kasi kung laging sila yung bibida, talagang maiiwanan yung mga OPM artists natin, di ba?”
Struggles
Now that she’s back with a new album, “’Pag Wala na ang Ulan” Jessa shared how piracy is making it harder for artists like her to hit ‘gold’.
“Bukas rin naman yung mind ko sa reality ngayon na talagang mahirap maka-gold. Yung piracy, yun yung tail nung sa akin eh.”
Jessa recalled the early part of her career, when the challenge was collecting hits more than selling the album. Getting a gold status during her time meant selling as much as 20,000 units, compared to today’s 7,500.
But Jessa remains upbeat about how “Pag Wala na ang Ulan,” her ninth album since 1997’s “Just Can’t Help Feelin’’.
“I still believe na meron paring mga tao na kahit makaka-download sila ng songs, meron paring mga tao na gusto pa rin makakuha ng actual album,” she explained.
Right timing
Jessa thinks her first album reached diamond status due to right timing.
“Nung time na ni-launch ako, wala akong masyadong kasabay, eh. So yung timing, ang ganda,” she explained.
Jessa was launched when singers were still mostly professional musicians. Actors or actresses who crossed over to singing were unheard of, and there were not that many talent shows. She earned the title Phenomenal Diva, thanks to her alluring face and figure, with the voice of a diva to match.
