'Patrol ng Pilipino' Unveils Miracles of the Blessed Pedro Calungsod

The Blessed Pedro Calungsod is set to become the second Filipino saint on his canonization in October this year. While this is perceived as a feat for the Philippines, little is known about the young catechist and martyr who remained true to his Catholic faith until his death.

Tomorrow (March 6) in "Patrol ng Pilipino," join Apples Jalandoni as she travels to Cebu City to visit the Archdiocesan Shrine of the Blessed Pedro Calungsod and trace the soon-to-be saint's much-disputed origin and identity, his missionary work and death, and the miracles that qualified him for sainthood.

Former Cebu Archbishop Cardinal Vidal, who lobbied for Calungsod's beatification, said that the martyr's approaching canonization serves as an inspiration and a testimony to young people that holiness can be achieved at a young age. Calungsod was killed at 17 while on a missionary work in 1672.

Meanwhile, Niko Baua will heed the latest bar exam topnotchers' take on the issues that currently taint the law profession, including hazing in fraternities and the impeachment of Chief Justice Renato Corona.

Know the stories behind the news in "Patrol ng Pilipino" tomorrow (March 6) in "Patrol ng Pilipino" after "Bandila" on ABS-CBN, or watch it earlier on DZMM TeleRadyo (SkyCable Channel 26), 9:15 p.m.

Ray Bernard Penaranda and a Sampaguita Vendor Killed in UPLB

Ray Bernard Penaranda and a Sampaguita Vendor Killed in UPLB

Ray Bernard Peñaranda, a 19-year-old 3rd year BS Agriculture student of the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) was stabbed dead in a holdup by two motorcycle-riding men in Laguna before dawn yesterday, Philippine Star reports.

Peñaranda, who hailed from Tanay, Rizal, was stabbed in the chest and died while being rushed to the hospital.

Senior Superintendent Gilbert Cruz, Laguna Police Director, immediately sacked Senior Superintendent Dante Novicio, Los Baños Police Chief, and 50 of his men not only for the killing of Peñaranda but also for the rape-slay of a 14-year-old sampaguita vendor last February 29.

I have ordered the relief of Novicio and his men. They would be transferred to another assignment and replaced by personnel from the Laguna provincial command,” Cruz said.

Chief Inspector Conrad Masungsong will replace Novicio as officer-in-charge of the Los Baños police.

Cruz placed the town police under the control of the Laguna provincial command until the killings of Peñaranda and the sampaguita vendor are solved.

Peñaranda, together with two fellow members of the UPLB dance group, went out of his apartment in Barangay Batong Malake in Los Baños to get something to eat.

They were walking home along Santos Street at around 1:30 a.m. yesterday when two men on a blue Honda motorcycle blocked their path and announced a holdup, Cruz said.

Witnesses said Peñaranda and his companions tried to put up a fight but one of the two men punched and then stabbed the UPLB junior.

Cruz said he is checking reports that the holdup men managed to divest Peñaranda and his two friends of their cellphones before fleeing toward Lopez Avenue.

Cruz said his men are now scouring Los Baños and neighboring towns for the two holdup men.

We have information on the identities of the suspects and we are now going after them,” Cruz said.

Taylor Kitsch Asks by Philippine Government to Correct Wrong Information Given About the Country

Taylor Kitsch Asks by Philippine Government to Correct Wrong Information Given About the Country

Taylor Kitsch, the lead star of sci-fi action movie "John Carter" was asked by Philippine government to correct his statement about the Philippines and its airport official whom he claimed gave him a rough treatment during his entry to the country.

While the Philippines is trying to strengthens its drive to attract tourist and redeem its pride tarnished by reports of several kidnappings, severe traffic, crime, corruption and the ageing Manila international airport, the Hollywood actor somehow made it even worst by telling his alleged unpleasant experienced with a custom official when he arrived for the filming of his upcoming film "Savages" with John Travolta and Uma Thurman.

Kitsch claimed that an airport customs officer threatened to send him back to Japan, his port of origin, because his passport had run out of pages. He also alleged the unidentified officer demanded that he be given an iPhone in exchange of his entry. And that he only allowed entry after he showed the officer a clips of his "John Carter" movie proving he is indeed a known Hollywood actor.

Bureau of Customs commissioner Ruffy Biazon immediately asked for investigation and later found out that Kitsch was actually referring to Indonesia and not the Philippines as he said during his interview on the Late Show with David Letterman.

"I feel confident that Mr. Kitsch was mistaken in saying that his bad experience during his travel was in the Philippines," Biazon said. Adding, "Unfortunately, the damage was done.... In the meantime, Mr. Kitsch, perhaps you can help us redeem our lost pride."

‘TV Patrol’ Celebrates 25 Years of Empowering the Filipino

‘TV Patrol’ Celebrates 25 Years of Empowering the Filipino

TV Patrol,” the country’s longest-running and leading Filipino primetime TV newscast, is celebrating its 25 years of patrolling the nation to deliver the biggest news and latest happenings while empowering citizens to become actively involved in nation-building.

‘Kayaban’ Noli De Castro, Korina Sanchez, and Ted Failon, the most experienced and credible team of broadcast journalists in the country, will present a special silver anniversary episode on Monday (March 5) and launch the “TV Patrol Balitandaan,” which will mount 25 mini-monuments, each to be revealed every week, in landmarks where the 25 biggest news events in the last 25 years happened.

“TV Patrol” will also undertake a venture called “Beinte Singko Para sa Kabayan Ko,” which will encourage Filipinos to drop in 25 cents in customized TV Patrol cans to be distributed in 25 provinces all over the country. The fundraising target amount of P2.5 million will be given to selected beneficiaries.

Through the program’s commemorative activities, “TV Patrol” seeks to engage Filipinos towards a common goal and bolsters their role as ‘patrollers’ that exhibit concern and service for the nation.

In 1987, the trailblazing “TV Patrol” revolutionized the way Philippine TV networks produce their primetime newscasts when it introduced a novel, mass-oriented format that appealed to Filipinos’ craving for news reports and information when democracy was restored. It not only set the trend in how newscasts should be done but also became the undisputed top news program in the country until today.

Its first 25 years saw a string of groundbreaking firsts for TV media – it became the first news program to deliver news on weekends and the first to be available online via livestreaming – innovative steps to deliver relevant and timely news and cater to more Filipinos in the country and around the world. More notably, “TV Patrol” has redefined the concept of citizen empowerment by encouraging Filipinos to be active and vigilant.

ABS-CBN’s award-winning breakthrough election campaign “Boto Mo, iPatrol Mo” (BMPM) called on citizens to report irregularities, election violations, and emergencies via text message, MMS, and e-mail before and during the 2007 and 2010 national elections. And it was through ABS-CBN’s citizen journalism campaign that the Maguindanao massacre was exposed. The first report on the Maguindanao massacre was sent by a BMPM patroller, who sent the first picture taken from the site.

BMPM, which was born from the “Citizen Patrol” segment of “TV Patrol,” empowered citizens to become agents of change by providing them airtime and allowing them to report on pressing problems in their own barangays and cities. Through the efforts of the BMPM Patrollers and ABS-CBN reporters and anchors, the TV network was named the most credible news source covering the elections according to a Pulse Asia survey in February 2010.

Moreover, “TV Patrol” has become a byword for journalistic integrity, while its anchors are deemed as icons of credibility in Philippine broadcasting. The team of De Castro, Sanchez, and Failon topped the 2011 survey in the National Capital Region by StratPolls Inc. as the most credible news team on Philippine television.

Don’t miss 25th anniversary episode of “TV Patrol” on Monday (March 5). Watch out for a special documentary marking the silver anniversary of “TV Patrol” airing soon on ABS-CBN.

ABS-CBN Wins Primetime Household Viewing in February 2012

ABS-CBN Wins Primetime Household Viewing in February 2012

ABS-CBN continues its winning streak in the primetime TV race as it dominated households nationwide in February with an average audience share of 41.4% or almost a ten-point lead from GMA’s 31.6%, according to industry-trusted multinational market research group Kantar Media.

ABS-CBN further widened the lead in primetime in the latter part of February with the sustained strength in viewership of “Walang Hanggan” which has been hitting over 30% with an average of 31.6% for the period Feb 20-29, elevating ABS-CBN’s weekday primetime shares to a staggering 45% and bringing GMA’s share down to 29.6% in the same time period.

The primetime block on television (6 PM to 12 MN) is important for TV networks because it is the time most Filipinos are watching television and advertisers put most of their TV ad placements to reach more viewers.

ABS-CBN also led in the household TV ratings in Balance Luzon (areas in Luzon outside Mega Manila) with an average primetime audience share of 44% vs GMA’s 31%; in the Visayas with 56% vs 21%; and in Mindanao with 61% vs 15%.

Kantar Media, which has national samples of 1,389 homes and 8,015 individuals that are statistically representative of total Philippine TV population, also reported that 12 out of the top 15 most watched programs in the country in February were produced by ABS-CBN with the top four spots occupied by its primetime offerings.

Leading the pack is top-caliber drama “Walang Hanggan” with an average national TV rating of 28.5% followed by first advocacy-serye “Budoy” (27%), kid robot “E-Boy” (26.4%), and the country’s undisputed number one newscast, “TV Patrol” (26.3%). Once again “TV Patrol,” beat rival “24 Oras” which only rated at 19.4% in the previous month.

Returning hit game show “Kapamilya Deal or No Deal,” now hosted by Luis Manzano, and newest Sunday musical program “Sarah G Live” hosted by Popstar Princess Sarah Geronimo, on the other hand, debuted strong and hit an average TV rating of 21.7% and 21.3% respectively.

Other ABS-CBN programs in the top 15 are “Top Rank Live” (26.2%), “MMK” (25.8%), “Wansapanataym” (24.5%), “Junior Masterchef” (23.6%), “Rated K” (21.6%), and “Goin’ Bulilit” (19.7%).

Overall, ABS-CBN registered an average national household share of 35.1% versus GMA’s close 34.9%.

ABS-CBN registered a net income of P2.2 billion in the first nine months of 2011, while news media reported that GMA Network earned P1.58 billion net income in the same period.

Kantar Media, a multinational market research group that specializes in audience measurement in more than 80 countries, has 22 TV networks, ad agencies, and pan-regional networks subscribing to its ratings services. Among its current subscribers are ABS-CBN, NBN, Sky Cable, J. Romero and Associates, Adformatix, Starcom, OMD, PhD, Mediacom, Mindshare, MEC, Maxus, Universal McCann, and Wellmade Manufacturing Corporation. They also include pan-regional networks likes CSM Media Inc., Fox International Channels, Star HK, Discovery, AXN, HBO, MTV, and Sony Pictures Television International.

ABS-CBN shifted to Kantar Media/TNS after filing a case vs. AGB Nielsen Media Research for failing to comply with its request to investigate alleged cheating and data tampering in TV ratings. The case is still pending in court contrary to claims by GMA, which is not a party to the case, that it has been resolved.

GMA Network Keeps Stronghold of Nationwide TV Ratings Lead in February

GMA Network Keeps Stronghold of Nationwide TV Ratings Lead in February

Broadcast giant GMA Network, Inc. (GMA) maintained its lead in nationwide TV ratings over competitors this February, according to broadcast industry's more trusted ratings service provider, Nielsen TV Audience Measurement.

Based on February 1 to 29 household data (February 26 to 29 based on overnight ratings), GMA posted an average of 36.3 household share points, ahead of ABS-CBN's 30.4 points by
5.9 points; and TV5's 14.6 by 21.7 points.

Using an average of 5 viewers per television household, these numbers translate to around 1.1 million more viewers tuned in to GMA over ABS-CBN and almost 4 million over TV5 from all over the country.

Leading across all day parts in Mega Manila, GMA kept its stronghold of its bailiwick area, which now comprises more than 59 percent of total television households nationwide. The Kapuso Network registered a total day average of 41 share
points,
up by a notable 16.1 points from ABS-CBN's 24.9 points, and up by 26.3 points from TV5's 14.7 points.

In terms of eyeballs, this means that GMA had 1.8 million more viewers than ABS-CBN
and around 3 million more viewers than TV5.

GMA remarkably swept 10 out of the 10 top-rating programs in Mega Manila for the entire February with the finale of Survivor Philippines Celebrity Doubles Showdown topping the chart with an overwhelming 52.2 household share points. The list also includes newly launched GMA programs namely Legacy, My Beloved, and
Biritera.

Similarly in the crucial area of Urban Luzon, where 77 percent of total television households are found, GMA remained ahead of competition in all dayparts with an audience share of 39.8 points. ABS-CBN trailed behind with 26.7 points; and TV5 with only 14.2 points.

GMA's lead in Urban Luzon translates to about 1.9 million viewers over ABS and 3.6 million more viewers over TV5 in February.

The Kapuso Network also dominated the list of top-rating programs in the said area occupying 8 out of the 10 slots. The Telebabad program Munting Heredera, which aired its final episode in February, culminated its 9-month run as the number one program on primetime for the said period.

GMA and TV5 subscribe to Nielsen TV Audience Measurement while ABS-CBN is the lone local major TV network that reportedly subscribes to Kantar Media, formerly known as
 TNS.

In Mega Manila, Nielsen TV Audience Measurement gathers data based on a sample size of 1,190
homes as compared to Kantar Media's 770 homes. Meanwhile, Nielsen has a nationwide sample size of 2,000 homes, which is statistically higher than Kantar's sample size of 1,370.

The Other Guys of “Moneyball”

The Other Guys of “Moneyball”

Joining Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill in Columbia Pictures’ critically acclaimed and Oscar-nominated film “Moneyball” are three promising actors who play unheralded baseball players turned sports heroes: Chris Pratt, Stephen Bishop and Casey Bond.

“Moneyball” is the true story of Billy Beane (Pitt), once a would-be baseball superstar who, stung by the failure to live up to expectations on the field, turned his fiercely competitive nature to managing a pro baseball team – the Oakland Athletics, or simply, Oakland A’s.

For casting for the players of the 2002 Oakland A’s, director Bennett Miller put the focus on his desire to capture stark, naturalistic baseball action. So he looked for the real thing, casting primarily experienced ball players who could act. Early on, the filmmakers enlisted Michael Fisher (“The Blind Side”) to serve as the film’s baseball coordinator, who set out to assemble, train and choreograph a cast who could authentically recreate the A’s ballgames down to the details.

The casting process was pretty extensive,” recalls Fisher. “Close to 750 guys tried out for the movie. We knew the best way to make it as authentic as possible, would be to get the best guys out there.” Most of those cast previously played in the minor leagues. They include:

Chris Pratt as Scott Hatteberg, First Base, #10. Pratt, best known for his co-starring role as Andy Dwyer on the hit NBC comedy “Parks and Recreation,” plays the injured catcher who becomes Billy’s Beane’s seemingly craziest acquisition – and strongest confirmation of his theories. Not only does Beane surprise Scott Hatteberg with an offer to join the A’s, he stuns him with a bizarre request: to play first base – a position he’s never played before. Pratt came to the production as the only player on the team without any real baseball experience and trained extensively, just as Hatteberg had to do. “Billy and Peter see the potential that nobody else sees,” says producer Michael De Luca. “Chris is such a wonderfully humanistic actor, bringing both drama and humor – he makes you root for him and for the moneyball theory.”

Stephen Bishop as David Justice, Left Field, #23. Bishop is a film and television actor (“Friday Night Lights”) and a former minor league player in the Atlanta Braves farm system. While in the minors he formed a friendship with the man he plays in the film: former All-Star David Justice. “Justice,” Bishop says, “told me he couldn’t think of anybody he’d rather play the part than me. That gave me a lot of confidence and I hope I do him justice.”

Casey Bond as Chad Bradford, Pitcher, #53. Bond, a former college pitcher and outfielder, plays the A’s idiosyncratic relief pitcher who throws in a submariner, knuckle-scraping style. Bond, who was drafted into the minor leagues as a centerfielder for the San Francisco Giants, quit the game to become an actor, having landed a national commercial in Nashville, and subsequently moved to Los Angeles. Based on his resemblance to Chad Bradford and his ability to pitch with Bradford’s unique underhand style, he was cast in the role.

The real Billy Beane appreciated that the filmmakers aimed for authenticity. “They put a lot of detail into hiring guys who had a real background in playing, who look like athletes,” he says. “I thought Chris Pratt who plays Scott Hatteberg was fantastic. I was moved by how he had some of the same mannerisms, how he even walked a little bowlegged like Scott, and he did a great job of recreating his whole demeanor. Every time he did something, I’d say ‘Well, that’s what Scott used to do.’ It’s a very difficult thing to pull off, but as a guy who was in the game, I was impressed.

Opening across the Philippines on March 7, “Moneyball” is distributed by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International.
