Cinema One Originals 2016 Festival Movie Entries, Dates and Venues

Cinema One Originals has made a name for itself as the film festival that breaks new ground and opens eyes to new modes of cinema, new forms of narrative, and new perspectives of storytelling. On its twelfth year, Cinema One Originals celebrates this with its new tagline: Anong Tingin Mo?

The literal translation of Anong Tingin Mo is "What do you think?" and in many ways, it encapsulates how any one film can be many different things to many different people but also exemplifies the multi-layered diversity that has been the hallmark of Cinema One Originals. This year will be all about different ways of looking at the same thing.

For the first time, Cinema One Originals gave grants to three original feature documentaries:

Teng Mangansakan's "Forbidden Memory" lifts the veil on the events of September 1974 as it talks to the survivors of a gruesome mass murder that has been kept under wraps for decades.
Paolo Picones and Gym Lumbera's "Piding" traces the history of Oliver Carlos, a grieving ornithologist reeling from tragedy who comes back to his hometown.
John Torres' dreamlike, mysterious "People Power Bombshell" unearths a lost film by Celso Ad Castillo and probes its circumstances and implications.

Seven original narrative features were also given grants, three to Cinema One Originals alumni:

"Lily," about a woman who is rumored to be a half-monster, is Keith Deligero's first foray into horror and myth.
The quirky love story "Every Room Is A Planet" resumes Malay Javier's fondness for juxtaposing science-fiction with youth culture.
Borgy Torre's basketball crime film "Tisay" transposes his noir inflections onto a unique milieu.

Four first-time filmmakers will also make their debuts this year:

Petersen Vargas' dark high school comedy "2 Cool 2Be 4gotten"
Samantha Lee's millennial love story "Baka Bukas"
Jose Abdel Langit's ethnographic mystery "Malinak Ya Labi"
Jules Katanyag's geriatric action film "Si Magdalola At Ang Mga Gago"

This year's festival will also screen a slew of acclaimed foreign films including some of this year's world cinema highlights like:

Ashdar Fajardi's "The Salesman"
Bruno Dumont's "Slack Bay"
Xavier Dolan's "It's Only The End of the World"
Ciro Guerrera's "Embrace of the Serpent"
Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinart's "Swiss Army Man"
Ken Loach's "I, Daniel Blake,"

Likewise, critically-acclaimed documentaries  such as:

Gianfranco Rossi's "Fuocuoammare"
Noah Baumbach & Jake Paltrow's "De Palma"
Pierre Film's "Close Encounters with Vilmos Szigmond"

As well as a slate of the best horror films of the year:

Na Hong-Jin's "The Wailing"
Veronica Franz & Severin Fiala's "Goodnight Mommy"
Robert Eggers' "The Witch"
Kiyoshi Kurosawa's "Creepy."

Among the restored classics to be showcased this year are:

Mario O'Hara's "Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos"
Danny Zialcita's "Nagalit Ang Buwan Sa Haba Ng Gabi"
Lino Brocka's "Cain At Abel"
Ishmael Bernal's "Pagdating sa Dulo"

There will also be special screenings of:

Lav Diaz's Golden Lion-winning "Ang Babaeng Humayo"
Sherad Sanchez's found footage horror "Salvage"

Cinema One Originals runs from November 14 to 22, 2016. Screenings will be at Trinoma, Glorietta, Gateway, Greenhills and Cinematheque.

MOANA Answers Call of the Ocean in High-Seas Adventure

From Walt Disney Animation Studios comes "Moana," a sweeping, CG-animated feature film about an adventurous teenager who sails out on a daring mission to save her people.
"Moana is the 16-year-old daughter of the chief of Motunui," says director Ron Clements. "She's athletic, nimble, compassionate and incredibly smart. She has a never-say-die attitude and a profound connection to the ocean."
"So it's troubling to her, to say the least, that her people don't go beyond the reef surrounding their island," adds director John Musker. "They stay within the confines of that reef, and Moana doesn't really understand why."
The story is inspired in part by the oral histories of the people and cultures of Oceania. Three thousand years ago, Polynesian voyagers, the greatest navigators in the world, voyaged across the vast Pacific, discovering thousands of islands. But then, according to scholars, for approximately a millennium, their voyages stopped – and no one knows exactly why. "Navigation is such a big part of Pacific culture," says Musker. "The ancient Polynesians found their way across the seas without the use of modern instruments, using their knowledge of nature, the stars, the waves and the currents."
Adds Clements, "We heard many times that the ocean doesn't separate the islands, it connects them. Voyaging is a real source of pride for Pacific Islanders, a part of their identity. They were, and continue to be, some of the greatest explorers of all time. What they did was quite sophisticated, borderline miraculous."
There are many theories, but no one is certain, about what may have led to this 1,000-year gap in exploration; this sparked the filmmakers' imaginations. Says Musker, "In our story, our heroine, Moana, is at the heart of the rebirth of wayfinding."
During her journey, Moana meets the mighty demigod Maui, a larger-than-life character who was inspired by multitudes of varied tales and legends about him throughout the Oceania region. Says Musker, "We were fascinated by the stories we read, the tales told to us by experts in the region. Maui was larger-than-life, a trickster and a shapeshifter. He could pull up whole islands from the sea with his fishhook; he had the power to slow down the sun. He is an incredible figure."
Maui, who's on his own journey of self-discovery, reluctantly guides Moana in her quest to become a master wayfinder and save her people. Together, they sail across the open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous monsters and impossible odds, and along the way, Moana discovers the one thing she's always sought: her own identity.
"It's a story that takes place many, many years ago, but with a contemporary feel," says producer Osnat Shurer. "Our hope as filmmakers has been to create a universal story that is also an homage to the beautiful people of the Pacific Islands who inspired us along this journey."

Filmmakers cast newcomer Auli'i Cravalho as the voice of Moana, and Dwayne Johnson lends his voice to demigod Maui. The voice cast also includes Jemaine Clement as Tamatoa, a self-absorbed, 50-foot crab ; Rachel House as Moana's trusted Gramma Tala; Temuera Morrison as Moana's no-nonsense father, Chief Tui; Alan Tudyk as the voice of dumb rooster Heihei; and Nicole Scherzinger voices Moana's playful and strong-willed mother, Sina.
Helmed by Clements and Musker, the directing team behind "The Little Mermaid," "Aladdin" "The Princess & the Frog," and produced by Shurer ("Lifted," "One Man Band"), "Moana" features music from a diverse and dynamic team that includes Tony®-winner Lin-Manuel Miranda (Broadway's Pulitzer Prize-winning and multiple Tony-winning "Hamilton"), Grammy®-winning composer Mark Mancina ("Tarzan" "The Lion King") and Opetaia Foa?i (founder and lead singer of the world music award-winning band Te Vaka).
Walt Disney Animation Studios' 56th animated feature "Moana" sails into Philippine theaters on November 30, 2016.
"Moana" is distributed in the Philippines by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures through Columbia Pictures. Like us on Facebook, WaltDisneyStudiosPH; follow us on Twitter, @disney_phil; follow us on Instagram, @disney.ph and use the hashtag #MoanaPH.

Ai Ai De Las Alas Elated Over Positive Reviews On Her Portrayal Of An Aging Whore In 'Area', Acts With Son Sancho Vito For The First Time

AI AI DE LAS ALAS is overwhelmed with all the positive reviews she's getting for her performance as an aging prostitute looking for her long lost child in Louie Ignacio's award-winning movie about the oldest profession, "Area". "Big blessing talaga sa'kin ang movie kasi it gave me the chance to attend my first international filmfest sa Kazakhstan where we won the Special Jury Prize sa Eurasia Film Festival," she says. "Ang sarap pala ng feeling na maglakad ka sa red carpet tapos pinapalakpakan ng mga tao ang pelikula ninyo at na-appreciate nila nang husto."

"Area" is important for her as it's also the first movie where she gets to act with her first born son, Sancho Vito de las Alas, who plays a pimp in the whorehouse where Ai Ai works. "Si Mama ang manager at handler ko," says Sancho. "Talagang concerned siya sa acting ko. Sinasabi niya, anak, bawasan mo, kapag medyo OA ang atake ko."

Is it true he took more after his dad, the late theatre actor Rey Malte Cruz? "Hindi naman. 50-50 sila, kasi sa mama ko naman ako lumabas, di ba? Mana ko sa kanilang dalawa. But I also want to try theatre acting like my dad, para mahasang mabuti ang craft ko sa an actor."

"Area" is rated R-18, without cuts, with all the controversial nudity and pumping scenes to be shown intact. It will open in theaters on November 9. Ai Ai left for the airport last Wednesday right after the presscon of "Area". She will have two shows in Texas, at Dallas on October 29 and at San Antonio (where the Alamo is located) on October 30. Then she'll go to visit her two other kids in California, Nicolo and Sophia. She'll be back in Manila before November 9 for the showing of "Area" then, on November 11, her birthday, she'll be receiving the Papal Award from Bishop Antonio Tobias at the cathedral in Novaliches.

Former Sexpot Rajah Montero Is Now Reborn As Ireen Cervantes Who Bares Her All In 'Area'

IREEN CERVANTES gives the most daring performance in "Area" as she has a scene where she does full frontal nudity after having sex with a barangay tanod. There's also a scene where she removes her panties during a pap smear examination with a doctor. We were surprised after viewing the movie when producer Dennis Evangelista told us that Ireen is the former sexpot Rajah Montero who was introduced in sex flicks like "Sarap ng Umibig", "Katas", "Langit Mo Kaligayahan Ko" in 2003 when she was only 17 years old. She did other sexy flicks until 2008 then went back to oblivion after sex movies faded away.

She's now managed by Rodel Fernando who recommended her to Dennis and to "Area" director Louie Ignacio. Didn't she have second thoughts doing her very daring scenes in the movie? "No, kasi dati na naman akong nagpapa-sexy," she says. "Also, Direk Louie explained to me what my role requires.

Why did she change her name to Ireen Cervantes?

Don't miss Ireen Cervantes and her daring nude scenes in "Area" which will be shown R-18 without cuts starring November 9.
