The feels of friendship in 'Me And Earl And The Dying Girl'

Winner of the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl” is the uniquely funny, moving story of Greg (Thomas Mann), a high school senior who is trying to blend in anonymously, avoiding deeper relationships as a survival strategy for navigating the social minefield that is teenage life. He even describes his constant companion Earl (RJ Cyler), with whom he makes short film parodies of classic movies, as more of a 'co-worker’ than a best friend. But when Greg’s mom (Connie Britton) insists he spend time with Rachel (Olivia Cooke) – a girl in his class who has just been diagnosed with cancer - he slowly discovers how worthwhile the true bonds of friendship can be.

Based on Jesse Andrews’ book of the same title, “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl” took readers by surprise with a truly contemporary coming-of-age story, packed with smart original dialogue and fully realized teen characters. Now director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon has perfectly captured the book’s offbeat humor, rare sensitivity and unique worldview in a feature film that chronicles a young man’s journey into adulthood as he learns what it means to be truly selfless. The innovative film also includes sly nods to legendary movies and tracks by the incomparable Brian Eno, including several previously unheard of compositions.

Gomez-Rejon, who had directed episodes of hit series “Glee” and “American Horror Story” and the horror re-boot “The Town That Dreaded Sundown”, says he wanted his next project to be something more personal. He found that in “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl.”

“The script was funny in an unusual and unpredictable way, as well as refreshingly honest,” says Gomez-Rejon. “At first, it reminded me of the wonderful John Hughes movies I grew up on, but then it very gently took an unexpected turn and became so much more than just a comedy. I had just lost my father and I felt that if I could make this film, it would be a way for me to express my own personal losses and transform them through humor.”

According to producer Jeremy Dawson, everyone involved was aware that they had been given the opportunity to make a unique and meaningful film. “No one does this kind of movie for the paycheck,” he says. “We all knew we’d never get a chance to make another movie like it. Jesse wrote a tremendous script that attracted all this great talent, both above and below the line. It’s a heartwarming story that people identify with. It has characters that are individual and unique. It speaks to something important. Projects like this don’t come along very often.”

“Me and Earl and the Dying Girl” opens very soon in cinemas nationwide from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.

Literary classic comes to life in 'Far From The Madding Crowd'

The literary classic adapted to film, “Far From the Madding Crowd” starring Carey Mulligan launched with a very impressive numbers at the US box-office following warm and rave reception from critics and audience alike when it opened on a limited release.

Carey Mulligan in Far from the Madding Crowd 450x299

Based on the novel of the same title by Thomas Hardy, “Far From the Madding Crowd” is the story of Bathsheeba Everdene, an independent, beautiful and headstrong woman who attracts three very different but very determined suitors: Gabriel Oak (Matthias Schoenaerts), a sheep farmer, captivated by her willfulness; Frank Troy (Tom Sturridge), a handsome and reckless Sergeant; and William Boldwood (Michael Sheen), a prosperous and mature bachelor.

Fox Searchlight presents a DNA Production, “Far From the Madding Crowd,” a timeless and charming tale about a woman’s choices and passions, while trying to maintain her own independence, explores the nature of relationships and love – as well as the human ability to overcome hardship through resilience and perseverance.

When it came to acting out the rural life of her latest character — Far From the Madding Crowd’s feisty heroine Bathsheba Everdene — Carey Mulligan knew what she was doing. The 29-year-old English actress spent portions of her youth on her grandmother’s farm in Wales and became a dab hand at looking after livestock. She can even milk a cow.

“Milking a cow? I can do that,” beams Mulligan. “There is a sort of knack to it. I had done it as a kid. My grandmother lived in Wales and we had relatives who were farmers. I live in the country now and am around farmers a lot.”

Indeed, the week prior to starting work on her latest film she was helping a local friend shear a sheep! “I wasn’t actually shearing, because it is really difficult,” she says, “but I was bagging up the wool. I know a lot of people who farm. It is not unfamiliar territory to me.”

At the time, women of sound social standing were expected to find husbands and raise a family, leaving business matters to the menfolk. Not so Bathsheba. She has no immediate interest in securing a husband. She just wants to run her farm. “She is a modern woman,” Mulligan says of her character, “and I think it is an extraordinary feat by Hardy to write somebody like that, and to enjoy her ‘otherness’. You can see in the writing that he is taking a real joy in writing this different, obtuse, rebellious woman. She isn’t like the people who surround her. She is different.”

“Far From the Madding Crowd” opens very soon this July 8 from 20th Century Fox.

James Reid and Nadine Lustre Poise to Follow the Piolo-Juday and John Lloyd-Bea Blockbuster Tandems

The formula of blockbuster loveteams Piolo Pascual - Judy Ann Santos and Bea Alonzo - John Lloyd Cruz seems to be working advantageously for one of this generation’s hottest love teams - James Reid and Nadine Lustre.

Piolo-Juday and JLC-Bea pairing, being two of the most successful love teams in local showbiz in spite of the fact that their reel romance never blossomed into something real, may also be the reason why the pairing has remained solid throughout the years.

JaDine managed to follow the same trend after their back-to-back movies "Diary Ng Panget," and "Talk Back and You're Dead" became a monster hit despite openly admitting that their tandem is purely platonic and professional. Regardless of this, their chemistry still leaves fans elated and craving for more.

Us being just friends works. What we have right now is good, given the fact that we’re comfortable with that makes everything easier and natural,” said James in a press conference for their third movie Para sa Hopeless Romantic, under Viva Films and co-sponsorship of Jollibee.

The movie revolves around a high school romance that abruptly turned sour and was given another chance when their paths crossed again. James and Nadine will be seen acting out pivotal moments in a Jollibee store, since Nadine’s movie character, Becca, is a college student working part-time as a Jollibee crew. This is something that is close to Nadine’s heart because her mother used to be part of the Jollibee crew as well during her younger years.

Unlike in the movie where the protagonists want to go beyond friendship, Nadine finds it ideal that they are not in a romantic relationship in real life because she believes that it usually causes conflict. “If we’re in a relationship and get into an argument tapos we have to do a shoot the following day and act sweet, hindi po ba kami rin ‘yung mahihirapan?” she said.

Being hopeless romantics ourselves, we’ll probably put love first and it will get in the way of work. So, right now, we just want to focus on work,” said James. “It is working well for us now, we don’t want to ruin it,” said Nadine.

When asked if they see themselves still as an onscreen item in the next three years, both agreed that it is hard to tell what the future holds but expressed desire to keep doing movies together for a long time.

This is the strongest love team I’ve ever had and it would be cool if we can be that tandem that could take a break and do other movies, then come back together for another one,” said James, which Nadine supported by referencing other successful reel pairings that do the same thing. “Parang Piolo and Judy Ann or John Lloyd-Bea,” she said.

As a reaction to Sharon's sentimental statement, KC on the sidelights of the opening of her #KCxMN photo exhibit with renowned fashion photographer Marc Nicdao at The Atrium of SM Megamall on Sunday night, said, "You see how protective my mother is, para siyang lion, ‘di ba? Parang mommy ko lang, para siyang lion protecting her cubs."
