On Reason Why He Decided to Transfer to TV5: "TV5 gave me what they thought I’m worth." - Derek Ramsay
TV5 won Derek Ramsay, the actor, because it talked to Derek Ramsay, the athlete.
That, in essence, is why the British-Filipino hunk chose to leave ABS-CBN and became the latest major star to cast his lot with the Kapatid Network.
“This is most definitely, hands down, the biggest decision I’ve made in my career,” Derek told Interaksyon.com Tuesday afternoon when he formally signed a three-year pact with TV5.
His first project is not a soap opera as one would expect from the leading man of the two biggest blockbuster movies last year, "Praybeyt Benjamin" and "No Other Woman."
Instead, he will host Amazing Race Philippines, the debut of TV5’s local franchise of the international reality game show.
And in August, he will be part of the TV5 coverage team for the 2012 London Olympics, the return of “the greatest show on earth” to his native England after 64 years.
“I just compared the offers from both networks,” Derek said, “and the projects being offered by TV5 was really close to my passion, which is sports, as well as travel and adventure.”
He says he wrestled with the decision for five to six months, taking “continuous meetings with my family and my handlers at ABS.”
In the end, it was never about money.“I didn’t make any financial demands from both networks. I just wanted to see what their plans are for me. I told Channel 2, ‘I don’t wanna tell you what I want. I want it to come from you. That’s how I was brought up. That’s how I am. I won’t be a diva. Just give me what you think I’m worth.’”
Derek did consult his girlfriend of six years, Angelica Panganiban, another major contract star of ABS-CBN, but he says, “She didn’t influence me one way or another. She just said kahit saan ka pumunta, hindi naman magbabago relationship natin.”
Derek made his his last public appearance as an ABS-CBN talent on March 30 when he joined the Star Magic concert in Hawaii. He did not discuss his impending transfer to TV5 with any of his colleagues.
“I wanted to keep it between me and my family,” he explained. “My friends in ABS, they’re still going to be my friends. Hindi naman magbabago ‘yun.”
He admits that his decision has met with disapproval from some of his fans. A few even attacked him on Twitter.
But Derek is very proud that he has managed to convince most of those doubters to respect his choice.
Naturally, TV5 has plans of maximizing Derek’s ever-growing leading-man status.
“Yes, I’m excited to eventually do a teleserye and maybe a movie for TV5,” he said.
But for now, those projects are mere sketches on the drawing board.
Derek is already excited about calling the shots as the host of Amazing Race Philippines.
“I get to travel to the best places around the country. You call that work?” he deadpanned.
He is likewise pumped about covering the London Olympics in August: “I’m going to be surrounded by the best athletes in the world. As an athlete I don’t know what can beat that high.”

Slater Young to New Teen Housemates: " Be Real!"
Pinoy Big Brother Unlimited” Big Winner Slater Young said it would be best for current and aspiring PBB housemates to be themselves while staying inside the PBB house.
“You just have to be real. Strategies are problematic because they would backfire on you. When you leave the house, it would work against you if you present something that’s not you inside the house,” said Slater, a licensed civil engineer who is determined to pursue a career in show business.
He may now be out of the heavily monitored Big Brother house but expect to see more of Slater as he enters a new chapter of his life after PBB.
“I really want to try acting and drama. I will be going through acting workshops while I wait for potential projects,” stated Slater, who is relocating to Manila.
Slater, who garnered almost 40% of the total votes to be crowned the Big Winner, would like to developed as a “serious actor” just like his idols John Lloyd Cruz and Pen Medina. He also wishes to be paired up with host-actress KC Concepcion. “I’ve long had a crush on KC because she’s very simple yet classy,” he said.
Though his was a landslide victory, Slater said he still has to get used to being recognized in public places where random people greet him and request to have a picture with him taken. He recalled a recent incident in a mall when a mother came up to him and told him that she supported and voted for him because of the values he had shown inside the PBB house.
Slater took home P2 million, an appliance showcase, an Asian tour package, an Internet TV, a water-refilling store franchise, and a special appearance in a Kapamilya program in the United States.
He also revealed that he will be allocating a part of his prize money on the schooling of the kids of their company’s employees. “We already did it before. We usually support our employees’ children who are studying or enrolled in highly expensive courses like engineering and nursing,” said Slater, whose family in Cebu has a construction business.
Slater joined PBB to become more mature and independent. During his stay in the PBB house, he was regarded as a leader who exhibited cleverness in carrying out Big Brother’s challenges as well as compassion for his fellow housemates.
He bested the edition’s 32 housemates including fellow Big Four contenders Pamu Pamorada, Joseph Biggel, and Paco Evangelista.

Bugoy CariƱo Learns the Meaning of True Love from ‘E-Boy’
ABS-CBN’s top-rating Primetime Bida teleserye “E-Boy” continues to instill different life lessons and values on viewers as the show entered its final week.
It has captured the hearts and minds not only of its avid viewers but its whole cast as well.
“Because of ‘E-Boy,’ I’ve learned about the importance of family, unconditional love and the will to do whatever it takes for the sake of your loved ones,” Agot Isidro said. In fact, even the hearts of her co-actors Ariel Rivera and Jomari Yllana were also moved with the message that the drama series wanted to impart on its viewers.
At such a young age, Kapamilya childstars Bugoy CariƱo and Deydey Amansec, on the other hand, learned the true meaning of love from the different exciting adventures that their characters E-Boy and Miyo had experienced in the series. According to Bugoy, “I have learned from “E-Boy” that anyone has the capacity to do anything if there is love.”
On “E-Boy’s” last week, tension arises as the characters help each other hand in hand to stop Miguel’s (Jomari) evil plans. Will Miguel finally succeed in getting his hands on E-Boy? Can Gabriel (Ariel) sacrifice E-Boy to save his wife Ria (Agot)? What will E-Boy and Megabot do to prevent Miguel’s plans from prevailing?
“E-Boy” is a part of ABS-CBN’s “Bida Best Kid” campaign launched recently that aims to empower children by encouraging them to become who they want to be and the best that they can be. It doesn’t only entertain and educate its young viewers with its values-oriented, child-friendly programs, but supports their dreams and aspirations as well.

GMA Network Hits P13.083 Billion Consolidated Revenues in 2011
GMA Network Hits P13.083 Billion Consolidated Revenues in 2011
GMA Network, Incorporated (GMA), the leading broadcast media company in the Philippines, hit consolidated revenues worth P13.083 billion in 2011.
Notwithstanding the absence of P2.054 billion worth of revenues from political advertisements generated in 2010 and the global impact of financial crisis in Europe and slow economic recovery in the US last year, the Company delivered a fairly competitive business performance.
In fact, despite the cutback in the advertising budget of top multinationals whose headquarters are based abroad, the Network’s leadership in nationwide ratings won for the Company a substantial portion of the available ad spend.
GMA Channel 7, the Company’s top performing business unit and the country’s most watched television station, posted an eight-percent revenue growth from regular advertising during the financial period versus the preceding year, more than double the gross national product (GNP) growth rate of only 3.5 percent in 2011.
The channel also raised its ad loading minutes by 2.1 percent even with rate adjustments that took effect in February of 2011. ABS-CBN, meanwhile, suffered the hardest hit by the ad spend cutback among local broadcasting companies with a 7.1-percent drop in ad loading minutes during the comparable period.
GMA Radio, with improved ratings both in the AM and FM bands, delivered a 15-percent revenue growth from regular advertising. GMA Regional TV made a 21-percent hike year-on-year in recurring ad placements.
Meanwhile, GMA International ended 2011 with a six-percent growth in revenues in US dollar terms, but the growth rate slowed down to only four percent in peso terms due to the appreciation of the Philippine peso exchange rate. Total revenues from subscription, licensing and advertising revenues made thru overseas operations reached P965 million.
GMA International runs the Network’s flagship international channel GMA Pinoy TV (GPTV) and the Filipino lifestyle channel GMA Life TV (GLTV) with estimated global viewer counts of two million and one million, respectively.
Both channels can be accessed thru a number of channel carriers in Filipino viewer-rich territories abroad such as the US, Canada, Middle East, Africa, Japan, Guam, Saipan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Papua New Guinea, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Diego Garcia, Europe, and the Carribean.
The International Edition of the Philippines’ number one news channel – GMA News TV International (GNTVI) – currently airs in Australia, Canada, Guam, Japan, Madagascar, UAE and soon in Europe, Malaysia and the US. It is also now available for downlinking in North America.
Alongside GMA’s three linear channels, GMA’s top-rating radio stations DZBB (AM band) and DWLS (FM band) are also now widely distributed among Filipino communities abroad. Soon, GMA will also strengthen its international video-on-demand (VOD) offer for multiple platform distribution to take advantage of changes in subscribers’ viewing habits and the growing popularity of viewing content via the Internet and mobile and portable devices.
In the domestic market, GMA continues its aggressive expansion efforts with the rise of capital-intensive originating stations in Ilocos and Bicol, which will be operational by the third quarter of this year.
Total operating expenses for the financial period had a single digit growth to P8.984 billion amid higher costing programs on primetime television, and the station-wide reformatting of Channel 11 from QTV to GMA News TV.
Total programming hours of in-house produced programs aired both on GMA Channel 7 and GMA News TV substantially hiked from 2010 to 2011, causing an 11-percent growth in production costs across all business segments to P5.105 billion. The aforementioned programming mix for Channel 11 drove down the amortization of program rights.
The four-percent rise in general and administrative expenses came mostly from the growth in personnel costs aligned with bonuses and merit increases to sustain competitiveness of compensation packages.
The year ended with earnings before income, taxes, depreciation, and amortization of P3.090 billion, and net income after tax of P1.715 billion.
The Company announced the release of cash dividends amounting to P1.944 billion at P0.40 per share, equivalent to 114 percent of its full 2011 net income. Payout date is on May 9, 2012.
The Company is poised to deliver better business performance in the new financial cycle. GMA used the 2011 drop in ad spend as an opportunity to strengthen its product and programming as reflected in its permanent standing as the nationwide ratings leader. This makes GMA an even stronger contender for a bigger share in the advertising pie as the industry recovers at the onset of 2012. As early as end-February this year, the GMA marketing group already closed 85 percent of 2012 sales targets with signed agreements from regular advertisers.
In both traditional and new media, GMA continues to be the Filipinos’ preferred source of news and entertainment.
With the recent launch of the Company’s umbrella site, www.gmanetwork.com, its online audience can access news, entertainment, and public service right at their finger tips anywhere.
The flagship international channel GPTV also made its mobile television service available to Filipinos in the Middle East. The service had 4,600 subscriptions in two months since its launch in September of last year.
The go-to portal for timely information, www.gmanews.tv, enlarged the presence of television content from GMA News and Public Affairs. The site has a lead of more than 200,000 followers over closest competitor ABS-CBN News Channel (ANC) on Twitter, and a similar lead over ABS-CBN News on Facebook.
On television, GMA kept a significant 3.1-point lead in household audience share over ABS-CBN and a whopping 18.6-point lead over TV5 in National Urban Television Audience Measurement (NUTAM) in the previous year.
This is according to broadcast industry’s recognized ratings service provider Nielsen TV Audience Measurement.
GMA’s established presence in the country’s key viewer hubs, Total Urban Luzon and Mega Manila, which respectively comprise 77 percent and 59 percent of total television households nationwide, is reflected in the Network’s yearlong double-digit margins over competitors.
The Nielsen TV Audience Measurement used by GMA is also used by 21 companies including two other local networks, namely, TV5 and Solar Entertainment; Faulkner Media; CBN Asia; 14 advertising agencies and three regional clients. On the other hand, ABS-CBN is the only local major TV network reportedly subscribing to Kantar Media, formerly known as TNS.
In Mega Manila alone, the Nielsen TV Audience Measurement has a sample size of 1,190 homes as compared to Kantar Media’s 770 homes. Nationwide, Nielsen has a total sample size of 2,000 homes compared to the lower sample size of 1,370 utilized by Kantar Media.
GMA Films partnered with US Film Distributor Freestyle Releasing for The Road’s theatrical release in the US next month, making history as the first ever Filipino film to be distributed commercially in North America and Canada.
Rookie Cops Go Undercover as High School Teens in ’21 Jump Street’
Rookie Cops Go Undercover as High School Teens in ’21 Jump Street’
Channing Tatum pairs up with Jonah Hill in Columbia Pictures’ new action-comedy “21 Jump Street,” a recent No. 1 box-office hit in the U.S.
In the film, Schmidt (Hill) and Jenko (Tatum) were enemies in high school who became unlikely friends in Police Academy. While they may not be the best cops on the beat, they have a chance to turn it around when they join the police department’s secret Jump Street unit, run by Captain Dickson (Ice Cube). They trade in their guns and badges for backpacks and use their youthful appearances to go undercover.
Trouble is, teenagers today are nothing like what they were just a few years ago, and Schmidt and Jenko discover that everything they think they know about being a teenager, from sex to drugs to rock and roll, is all wrong. More importantly, they both find they are still dealing with all of the adolescent problems they didn’t address in their own teen years – and both will have to confront the terror and anxiety of being a teenager again and all the issues they thought they had left behind.
The idea for breathing new life into “21 Jump Street” as a feature film began with Stephen J. Cannell, who had co-created the popular television series with Patrick Hasburgh back in the day. One of the most venerable, talented, and prolific television writer-producers, Cannell’s many credits – from “The A-Team” to “The Rockford Files” to “The Greatest American Hero” to “Wiseguy,” among many others – earned him a legion of fans and admirers, especially among his colleagues in entertainment.
One such admirer is producer Neal H. Moritz, who has earned his own reputation as a go-to producer of action films. “He was incredibly charismatic – I loved everything about him,” says Moritz of Cannell, who died in 2010 at the age of 69. Moritz recalls their initial meeting: “We started talking about ’21 Jump Street’ and I told him how much I had loved that show. He mentioned that he was working on turning it into a movie, that he was a fan of my movies, and he asked me if I would like to get involved with the project. Are you kidding?”
“21 Jump Street” ran for five seasons, the first four on the nascent Fox network, providing them with one of their first hits. Starring Johnny Depp in his first major role, the drama about young-looking cops going undercover in high schools scored high ratings in the key demographic of young viewers that the then-fledgling network was beginning to court.
Moritz and executive producer Tania Landau immediately saw the promise in updating that premise, but it wasn’t until Jonah Hill became involved that the project really came into focus. “It’s a great concept,” Landau says. “Two young-looking cops go undercover at a high school, and against all odds, bust a drug ring. We make a lot of action movies, so that was how we saw the direction for this project, too. But things changed when we had lunch with Jonah; he suggested doing it as an R-rated action comedy, and suddenly it all fell into place.”
Hill says that it started with a simple question: “What would it be like to relieve the most important time period of your youth… high school. You think you have all the answers that you didn’t have then, but then you get back there and realize those answers are all wrong. You then immediately revert back to the insecurities and problems you had when you were seventeen.”
Moritz and Landau immediately sparked to Hill’s fresh take on the material, and Cannell, too, thought it was a great spin on the “Jump Street” series.
Opening across the Philippines in May, “21 Jump Street” will be distributed in the Philippines by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International. How Marvel Cast the ‘Avengers’ Team
How Marvel Cast the ‘Avengers’ Team
Completing the award-winning cast of “Marvel’s The Avengers” proved to be a breeze for the filmmakers. “One of the great things when you make a film that’s been set up like this is that you start the casting process 80% done,” informs producer Louis D’ Esposito.
Leading the cast are Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner and Tom Hiddleston, with Stellan SkarsgĆ¥rd and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury.
Every team has a go-to guy when the chips are down and “The Avengers” is no different as they turn to billionaire, industrialist playboy Tony Stark aka Iron Man. One of the cornerstones and fan favorite of the Marvel Universe, the first two installments of the “Iron Man” franchise, starring Robert Downey Jr. have grossed a combined 1.2 billion at the worldwide box office.
“Robert is a tour de force as Tony Stark and he injects that confidence and sense of humor that brought to life and defined the character in the best way possible in both ‘Iron Man’ films,” says producer Kevin Feige. “We wanted to give Robert scenes with all the characters as we knew it would be a lot of fun to watch Tony’s interaction with Captain America, Thor and The Hulk. When Robert walks on the screen, the audiences embrace him in a very big and palpable way; he really is a powerhouse for us and the film.”
Downey shares, “Tony initially thinks forming the team is ridiculous, but being Tony Stark, he is more open to the realm of possibilities that exist in the world of ‘The Avengers.’ Tony already had hints of it from Nick Fury who has been stringing him along for a while about becoming part of a larger universe.”
The director of S.H.I.E.L.D. (Strategic Homeland Intervention Enforcement Logistics Division) and the person trying to convince Tony Stark to join “The Avengers” team is Nick Fury played by Samuel L. Jackson.
For Jackson, having Nick Fury front and center in “The Avengers” was a welcomed change to the many cameo roles in the other Marvel franchises leading up to this film. “It’s great to be the guy who is the organizer of The Avengers team,” says Jackson. “He’s the guy who has the raison-d’ĆĀŖtre that kind of understands the threat and has to get them to understand the nature of the threat; that we’re a lot stronger together than they are individually. Using Coulson in a manipulative way to get them to do what he needs them to do is not above Nick’s character. He does kind of fudge the truth a bit to get them to take the bait and join in, and eventually they all do.”
One Avenger who is suffering a little heartbreak is Captain America, played by Chris Evans. Frozen in a block of ice since 1945, Captain America awakes from the deep freeze to find a world he knows nothing about and where all of his friends and comrades have passed away.
“It’s not just that Captain America wakes up in a whole new world; it’s the fact that he has to deal with the emotions of finding out that everybody he knows is dead,” says Chris Evans. “Every single person he called brother on a battlefield is gone and the world around him is a different place. It’s more fast-paced and impersonal because new technologies have put barriers between people. In the ’40s there was much more of a direct and honest sincerity in the way people behaved and I think human interaction helps breed manners. Waking up in modern day is just an extremely different way of life that Steve Rogers now has to get used to.”
“Starring as Captain America was scary and exhilarating at the same time,” says Evans. “’Thor’ had already opened and done very well and so I kept thinking Captain America better open and do well because I don’t want to be the weak link of the ‘The Avengers.’ Luckily the film did well and it was an amazing feeling to see kids’ faces light up when they saw me in the costume. It really was a completely new experience for me, for which I am very grateful.”
Another newly christened franchise in the Marvel Universe is “Thor.” The film kicked off the summer of 2011 with a bang when it opened #1 at the box with $65.7 million and went on to gross $446 million worldwide. In “The Avengers” Chris Hemsworth reprises his title role as the hammer-wielding Norse god Thor.
Hemsworth explains why family issues force Thor to return to Earth in “The Avengers”: “Thor has conveniently come back to earth briefly because Odin summons dark powers from the universe and it’s very costly,” explains Hemsworth. “He’s come back to retrieve Loki, who’s running madness on Earth and causing a lot of chaos. He also has some questions of his own he wants answered like, ‘How did this happen and where did I and my brother go wrong?’”
The actor continues, “In ‘Thor’ my character learned a whole lot about humility and gained a new respect for humans because they were able to help him discover who he needed to become in order to earn his powers back. I also think he feels very protective of humans now because of his relationship with Jane. Joining The Avengers team is also tricky because he has a personal investment in that his brother Loki is the one who’s causing the chaos and he fears that the others may just want to kill him instead of just stopping him and taking away his powers.”
Helping Nick Fury keep The Avengers on point for their mission is Natasha aka Black Widow. Reprising her role from “Iron Man 2,” Scarlett Johansson was happy to slip back into the sexy suit of her character’s alter ego Black Widow.
“To be honest, I really didn’t know what the future would hold for the Black Widow after ‘Iron Man 2,’” informs Johansson. “I didn’t know how the fans would respond, but to be a part of the Marvel Universe and playing such a dynamic, ass-kicking character is pretty exciting. The first time you saw this character in ‘Iron Man 2,’ you didn’t get to learn much about her because she’s a bit of a slippery fish. She still has many different faces she puts on and, to this day, she still is divisive in that way. In this film, audiences will get to see more of her history and kind of shady past, which to me is very exciting because the darker part of the character was always very appealing to me.”
Black Window sets off to find Bruce Banner, played by Mark Ruffalo, who has gone off the grid in order to stay away from anything that can bring stress and conflict into his life.
For Ruffalo, his friend and colleague Robert Downey Jr. was the inspiration he needed to take on the role. “’The Avengers”’ isn’t the type film that I’ve done in the past or that I am usually invited to do,” laughs Ruffalo. “I was a little nervous about it because when Joss Whedon and I first met about the role there wasn’t a script. I thought a lot about Iron Man. I thought about what Robert Downey Jr. did with that part—he is one of my hero actors. I really loved what Robert did; he reinvented the genre. It made me feel like I could fit into that world with whatever it is I do. I had one meeting with Joss, who I liked instantly, so between him and Robert I was in.”
“What appealed to both Joss and I about the character is that he would have a common man sort of feel to him and possess this world-weary charm,” says Ruffalo. “We also agreed he should have a sense of humor about his situation. Based on the last incarnation of The Incredible Hulk, there was the promise that Banner may actually have a little control over the Behemoth. We wanted him to be fun and interesting as Banner and awesome as Hulk.”
Playing Hawkeye is two-time Academy Award® nominated actor Jeremy Renner who says playing a character in the Marvel Universe who is human and grounded in reality was an attractive element that intrigued him.
“Producer Kevin Feige showed me images of Hawkeye from ‘The Ultimates’ and they were very cool, but what I liked more then anything was the idea that he’s a human being with a high skill set who is a bit of a rogue agent. I’ve played a few snipers before and there’s a really interesting mentality that comes along with being a sharp shooter, so I thought it was a pretty fun character to play.”
With the casting process completed, producer Kevin Feige reflects upon his deeply talented cast and his desire to keep their characters grounded in authenticity. “The great thing about the Marvel Universe is that it takes place in the real world; it’s not a fictitious Metropolis,” explains Feige. “A big part of this equation is having a team that can deliver that right balance of emotion so that audiences can connect to the human element of the story. We have been rewarded for making those slightly against-the-grain choices in finding the right actor for the job, whether they’ve ever been in these types of films or not. When I think about the cast in this film from top to bottom, I still get giddy with excitement because they all are fantastic artists who understand what we need in terms of performance and all bring their own unique sensibilities that elevate each of their roles.”
(“Marvel’s The Avengers” will assemble in the Philippines on April 25 2012. The film is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International through Columbia Pictures.)
Battleship – The Popular Game is Now a Full-Length Motion Picture
Battleship – The Popular Game is Now a Full-Length Motion Picture
Peter Berg directs and produces “Battleship,” an epic-scale action-adventure that unfolds across the seas, in the skies and over land as our planet fights for survival against a superior force.
After the blockbuster success of the toys-to-films Transformers and G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, Hasbro reviewed the catalogue and focused on “Battleship” as its first game-to-film. Still, the company knew it wouldn’t move forward until a crucial dilemma was resolved: how to logically transfigure a beloved property into a cohesive and entertaining motion picture.
It was crucial to the producers that when audiences see this epic, they witness an incredible spectacle. Bennet Schneir, the leader in leisure time entertainment services and products in Hasbro Inc. says: “They’re going to see airplanes and ships and aliens and shredders and thugs. They’re going to see the game of ‘Battleship’ that they all grew up on come to life in front of them. And at the core of it, they’re going to see a story about a group of human beings who are up against impossible odds.”
The minds at Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) - under the supervision of VFX - were responsible for creating those odds. “We took great pains to construct the aliens so that they were similar to us, certainly they’re going to look very different, but the idea was that we live in parallel worlds, something astronomers call a ‘Goldilocks planet.’ They use and need the same resources, so they can exist in the same environment that we do. From the onset, Director Peter Berg was very intent upon identifying certain aliens as having distinct personalities from one another so that they will be identifiable to the audience.”
Producer Scott Stuber admits that he was blown away by the intimidating look of the humanoid aliens, as well as their massive ships and intergalactic weaponry. He says: “ILM is the first to come to the table with a new idea. Having worked with them over the years, it’s still fun to see how much they continue to up their game, and the things that they continue to bring to life on film are extraordinary.”
SFX supervisor also worked in concert with his VFX counterparts at ILM for those sequences that featured another unique device: the shredder. “We introduce an entire alien naval fleet in the movie, which I’ve never seen before,” states Berg. “We had some of the best minds at ILM designing these ships and building 3D models on computers, figuring out what kind of fighting systems they would have. The naval combat between these alien ships and our Aegis-class destroyers is breathtaking. We’ve also created some cool weaponry that the aliens use. One is called a shredder, which has an intelligence system and is programmed to destroy whatever is in its path. It’s about nine feet in diameter, a sphere that shreds whatever is in its path. It’s huge and has all kinds of gears and things that cut through metal and cement, anything actually.”
“One of the first things we talked about was the idea of a shredder. Imagine a circular array of chainsaws, a huge ball the height of a normal room with a whirling dervish motion that could burrow down to the center of the Earth just as easily as it could plow through an 18-wheeler.”
The shredder appears in several action-packed moments throughout the film. However, another key sequence featuring the shredder required to cut a bus in half. The script called for the device to chew its way across a highway, devouring a light pole and cars before slicing a bus in half. Naturally, all of this was shot in Baton Rouge, where other team created a 400-foot green screen highway in a huge empty lot across from the Celtic-Raleigh stages.
They discusses the assorted set pieces created for the dynamic scene: “One bus was towed on what we call a ratchet, a high-compression, air-powered cable that allowed us to move the heavy vehicle up to 15-20 miles an hour. When the shredder hits it, we used metal shape charges below 3/8-inch steel plates that held it together. When those steel plates blew apart, the bus was pulled apart and torn in half. We added an additional brake and steering system that was self-contained. The stunt guy ‘driving’ the bus up front had to live through all these hellacious explosions, but not a fireball. In this sequence, the shredder flies from one of the alien ships out on the water off the coast, zeroing in on a freeway.”
One of ILM’s design ideas involved the look and movement of aliens’ subterranean vessels, known as Stingers. They took their cue from Berg, who states: “The initial idea for the alien ships was taken from the idea of a water bug. The ships themselves have this movement and orientation where their backs are up and their heads are down, like they’re charging, and then they hover and sit on top of the water like bugs. I loved the idea of having that unexpected movement in the water as a counterpoint to the way that we all understand how ships sit and move through the water.”
Pete said, ‘What if these ships could all of a sudden leap into the air and land in the water somewhere else?’ which was a very intriguing idea. It’s science fiction, but grounded in reality.”
The water interaction in this movie is very intense. The team dealt with many ocean simulations and studies of water surface. Peter Berg is specific about what kind of swells he wants to see, the speed that he wants these ships to move at. He has a lot of boating experience, so he knows what things look like when they’re out in the ocean. When you put a big ship out, it displaces the water when crashing through waves.
For this research on water displacement, the team says “shot a lot of footage of how these massive ships travel through stormy seas. It’s amazing how even these big, heavy ships rock and move. Of course, that’s something you would feel when you’re on a real ship.”
