Jasmine’s wishes for her 18th year

Instead of holding an extravagant debut party, TV5 Princess Jasmine Curtis-Smith chose to celebrate her 18th birthday in a simple yet meaningful manner: by donating to a charity and spending time with her family.

“Kasi, for me, gusto kong maging practical sa pag-spend ng money. Hindi ako in favor na mag-spend so much on myself para sa isang gabi lang tapos para sa akin pa,” she told members of the press Thursday, April 12. “In a way, gusto ko magspe-spend ako ng ganung karaming pera, something more useful, more productive.”

Besides donating an undisclosed amount to the Cribs Foundation, Jasmine spent her 18th birthday shopping for her mother in Australia.

Jasmine Curtis-Smith

“Sobrang tagal kong hinintay na mag-shopping kami for her. So finally pumayag na rin siya. Tapos for the whole day, siya lang ang inintindi ko,” Jasmine shared.

Asked what she gave herself for her birthday, Jasmine said: “Wala pa. Siguro yung regalo ko for myself is yung… kasi happy na ako na napag-shopping ko si Mommy. So feeling ko yun na yung gift ko sa sarili ko.”

Jasmine added she also considers her recent trip to the Philippines as a birthday gift to herself. “Kasi enjoy ako pag nagtatrabaho ako e,” she said.

Birthday wish

Her birthday wish? “More success, when it comes to school and work. Also a healthy life for my family. And a successful year in high school. And to be able to help more charities.”

Jasmine is in her last year of high school in Australia, where she is based.

Is there something she is looking forward to, now that she’s 18?

“Finishing high school to the best of my ability talaga,”she replied. “This year, yun lang talaga ang pinaka-goal ko, to get the best grades that I can. Pero at the same time, keep my social life healthy talaga.”

As to whether she’ll entertain suitors now that she’s 18, Jasmine shared her parents never forbid her from having a boyfriend.

“Talaga ako, ang main focus ko is my family, school, and work,” she explained. Jasmine added maintaining a relationship might be difficult since she’s studying in Australia while frequently visits the Philippines for her showbiz commitments.

Jasmine’s young showbiz career can be considered a success so far with her numerous endorsements and TV5 shows. She has done two regular shows for the Kapatid network so far: “Ang Utol Kong Hoodlum” with JC De Vera and the David Archuleta-starrer “Nandito Ako.” She will also star in multiple episodes of the Sunday fantasy show “Pidol’s Wonderland.”

Education over showbiz

Jasmine adds that the network has given her the space “for me to just do well and excel in my studies so I can finish my last year.” “Para kung dito na nga ako lilipat, bongga na, di ba? Andito na talaga ako full time,” she explained.

Is she open to moving to the Philippines after she finishes high school to pursue her showbiz career full-time?

“Kung papayagan ako ni Mommy, Daddy, manager ko, saka Ate ko,” she said. “Otherwise, siguro doon ako magco-college. Tapos the same, pabalik-balik to do work.”
For Jasmine, discontinuing her education to focus on showbiz is not an option.

“If ever, one year lang akong magsto-stop. Kasi I don’t want to prolong it tapos completely ako mawalan ng gana. And si Daddy, yun ang advice. Si Daddy, ang gusto niya, gap year tapos schooling,” she explained. “At least sa gap year ko, hindi ako tambay na wala akong ginagawa. Pero it also depends kasi ayokong iwanan ni Mommy sa Melbourne.”

It would be a waste not to finish her studies, Jasmine said, adding that she wants to prove that one can complete a college degree while doing showbiz work.

While her mother and sister Anne Curtis want her to finish her studies, Jasmine said choosing to get a degree was entirely her decision.

“Of course, they want me to stay happy kung ano man ang desisyon ko. Kasi at the end of the day, they said it’s my life. And kung di ako happy sa buhay ko, what’s the point?” she said.

It’s a girl for Katrina

Katrina Halili and boyfriend Kris Lawrence are having a girl.

This is what Kris announced on his Twitter account last Friday, April 13. “Guess what guys??” he tweeted. “IT’S A GIRL.”

The 29-year-old singer confirmed the news in GMA-7’s “Showbiz Central” Sunday, April 15.

“Three days ago nalaman namin. Super overwhelming ang feeling. So now the emotions are really starting to really overcome us na, my God, nandyan na. It really develops,” Kris said in a taped interview. “Sobrang excited kami. Parang tumigil ang mundo when we saw the hand. Tapos nakita 'yung gender so we know it's gonna be girl.”

Katrina Halili and Kris Lawrence

He added, “Lately ko lang na absorb kung ang tawag sa baby ay blessing. Kasi the blessing is actually the power of happiness that’s given to you. When you think about paano yung baby mo, it makes you smile kaagad. Parang lahat ng problema mo nawawala.”

Katrina likewise announced her baby’s gender on Twitter.

“Ocge na nga.. Share ko na.. Baby Girl po...” she tweeted, adding that the “tentative” name for their baby is Kristina (a combination of hers and Kris’s names).

The “My Beloved” star admitted she is pregnant late last month.

“Masaya ako. Blessing ito," she said in an interview with “Startalk TX” last March 24.

"Blessing ka and mamahalin kita and gagawin ko ang lahat para maging maganda ang future mo," was Katrina’s message to her baby.

Enrique on team-up with Kathryn: Chill lang muna

Unlike Daniel Padilla who openly expressed interest in “Princess and I” lead star Kathryn Bernardo, Enrique Gil remains “cool” about his team-up with the Kapamilya actress.

“Sa ngayon, chill lang muna ako. Sa kalagitnaan ng teleserye, people get closer. Who knows, hindi ba? (Pero) sa ngayon, chill lang muna,” Enrique in an interview at the press conference of the said teleserye at the ABS-CBN compound on Wednesday, April 11.

He added that he won’t do things just for show or just to gain more supporters for his team-up with Kathryn.

“Sa akin naman, yung papaakyat siya (ng stage), ayoko namang basta hawakan na lang agad siya. Ayoko namang mag-isip yung mga tao na nagpapakita (to impress) lang ako sa mga tao. Sa akin, cool lang ako, chill lang.”

Enrique Gil during ABS-CBN's Bida Kapamilya Caravan held at the Ynares Sports Center in Antipolo, Rizal on April 14, 2012

Not competing

Enrique doesn’t want to compete with Daniel and Khalil Ramos, Kathryn’s other leading men in “Princess and I,” saying that it is for the fans to decide who of them has the best chemistry with Kathryn.

Different fanclubs were already created for Kathryn and her three leading men. These are KathNiel (for Kathryn and Daniel), KathQuen (for Kathryn and Enrique) and KathLil (for Kathryn and Khalil).

“Sabi naman ni Direk, pare-parehas naman daw kami. Pero depende pa rin iyan sa mga tao kung alin talaga ang mas magki-click. Malakas rin ang mga fans nila,” Enrique said.

He will just follow his director’s instructions and let the story and his chemistry with Kathryn take its course.

"Basta ako, kung ano ang lang ang ibibigay sa akin ni director Dado, iyon na lang ang gagawin ko. Wala akong gagawin na baka makakasira pa sa friendship naming apat. Chill lang ako, cool lang ako,” he added.

Enrique, who plays a prince in the TV drama, only has good words for Kathryn. He says Kathryn is very funny and easy to talk to.

“Maloko rin siya. Tahimik siya, pero naghihintay siya kung sinong babanat kase babanat rin siya. So, iyon ang gusto ko sa kanya, kalog. Iyon yung gusto ko sa mga babae. Very fresh siya kapag kinausap mo, hindi yung parang walang buhay. Light lang siya,” Enrique relates.

Not after Kim

Enrique also belied reports that he is courting Kim Chiu. He explained that the rumor probably started when he met Kim and Mattero Guidicelli in Cebu, where they both had different mall shows.

“Si Kim, nag-meet kami sa Cebu, may mall show yung “My Binondo Girl” tapos ako may mall show rin ako. Si Matteo (Guidicelli) nagtext na, ‘Punta ka dito.’ Coincidence lang na may show sila at ako. So, nag-chill lang kami sa isang place,” Enrique said.

Even though Enrique and Kim work together in “ASAP,” he said that their communication is only limited to the usual “hi” and “hello.”

“Nahiya ako kasi hindi ko (siya) kilala. Kahit nagka-movie kami with Ge (Gerald Anderson), hindi talaga kami nagka-usap. Hi lang, ganoon lang. Nagkwento siya na yung, ‘Ate ko, kilala yung tita mo.’ Tapos si Matteo naman yung mom niya, ‘Uy kilala ko din mom mo.’ So, kaming tatlo, doon kami naging close ,” Enrique explained.

Does he pose a threat to Kim’s love team with Xian Lim? Enrique replied, “Ay hindi, okay sila, naririnig ko.”

“Princess and I” premieres in ABS-CBN Primetime Bida on Monday, April 16. Directed by Dado Lumibao and Francis Pasion, it also stars Albert Martinez, Gretchen Barretto, and Dominic Ochoa.

Albert hopes Amalia-Annabelle fight will be resolved

Albert Martinez hopes the fight between his mother-in-law Amalia Fuentes and talent manager Annabelle Rama will be resolved peacefully.

It will be recalled that Amalia didn’t welcome Annabelle at the wake of her (Amalia’s) estranged husband, Joey Stevens, during the Holy Week. The conflict spilled over on Twitter.

Albert hopes Amalia and Annabelle will be able to talk out their differences and make peace with each other.

“Wala naman sigurong gulo na hindi maayos and one of these days doon din tutulak iyan at magkakabati din iyan. Hopefully, nobody gets hurt in the process,” Albert said at the press conference of “Princess and I” on Wednesday, April 11, at the ABS-CBN compound in Quezon City.

Albert Martinez

Albert admitted he wasn’t aware of the issue between Amalia and Annabelle as he was busy shooting “Princess and I” until a friend mentioned it to him.

He feels sad for the situation, knowing that showbiz is just a small world.

Feeling bad
“I feel bad not necessarily for my mother-in-law or Tita Annabelle. I feel bad na within the industry ay magkakagulo gulo tayo, in general ha. Kasi it's a small family, small industry,” he said.

He thinks the problems should “be dealt (with) privately.”

“So, parang if there's any problem, siguro it should be dealt privately not in the social networking site,” Albert said.

Albert describes his role in “Princess and I”: “Being an actor and playing the role of a king is a great experience. It is something na hindi ko pa nagawa before. The reason why I accepted this is I’m working with a power-packed team. Everything is top-notch, so how can you say no to this kind of project.”

Albert shot some of his scenes in Bhutan, together with Gretchen Barretto, Kathryn Bernardo, and Enrique Gil. “Princess and I” premieres in ABS-CBN Primetime Bida on Monday, April 16.

ABS-CBN Nets P2.4 Billion in 2011

ABS-CBN Nets P2.4 Billion in 2011

The consolidated net income of ABS-CBN Corporation, the country’s largest multimedia conglomerate, registered P2.4 billion for the full year 2011.

ABS-CBN generated consolidated revenues of P28.2 billion from advertising and consumer sales, a 13% decline compared to 2010. Less the revenues from political advocacies and advertisements in 2010, consolidated revenues for 2011 declined by 4% year-on-year.

ABS-CBN’s advertising revenues reached P17.6 billion, a decline of 19% from a year ago. Minus the revenues from political advocacies and advertisements in 2010, advertising revenues declined by 6% year-on-year. This decrease is attributable to a slowdown in advertising spending by corporates.

Consumer sales for 2011 amounted to P10.6 billion, posting a 1% increase from a year ago. Sky Cable continues to contribute positively with revenues increasing by 10% to P4.3 billion. This is mostly driven by the increased take up of its broadband service subscriptions which increased by 18% year-on-year. However, ABS-CBN Global revenues declined by 8% year on year in peso terms due to the decline in subscribers and the appreciation of the Philippine peso against the US dollar. ABS-CBN Global’s overall viewer count was almost flat compared to the previous year. There was subscriber growth in Canada, Asia-Pacific and Australia, while there were declines in the Middle East, Europe, North America and Japan.

Total operating and other expenses dropped by P1.1 billion or 5% year-on-year to P22.3 billion. This was partly a result of lower cost of sales and services and general and administrative expenses (GAEX) as the company continued its effort to manage and control expenses. The decline in both expense accounts partly offset the increase in total production costs due to the Company’s drive to produce quality and innovative programs.

Net income attributable to shareholders is at P2.4 billion, aided by a gain on sale of Sky Cable Philippine Depositary Receipts (PDRs) to the Singaporean company, STT Communications Ltd. Meanwhile, earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) hit P6.8 billion.

Capital expenditure and film and program rights acquisition for the year amounted to P4.2 billion, 14% higher than the level of spending from the previous year. Additional equipment was purchased to increase the company’s capacity to produce additional new programs.

ABS-CBN maintained its national audience share and ratings leadership with prime-time audience share averaging 43% , with a 13 percentage point lead over GMA’s, based on the Kantar National TV Ratings figure.

For the full year 2011, twenty one of the company’s shows were in the Top 20, with the following occupying the Top 18 slots: Emil Cruz Jr.’s Mara Clara, 100 Days to Heaven, PabloS. Gomez’s Mutya, Minsan Lang Kita Iibigin, Ikaw ay Pag-ibig, Budoy, Maalaala Mo Kaya…, Noah, Pilipinas Got Talent (Sun), TV Patrol, Guns and Roses, Pilipinas Got Talent (Sat), My Binondo Girl, Imortal, Rated K Handa Na Ba Kayo?,Junior Master Chef Pinoy Edition (Sat), Wansapanataym, Nasaan Ka Elisa?, and Maria La Del Barrio

ABS-CBN Film Productions, Inc. released sixteen films in 2011. Five of them–Ang Tanging Ina Mo Last Na To, Dalaw, Catch Me I’m in Love, In The Name of Love, No Other Woman and Praybeyt Benjamin–topped P100 million in box office receipts, earning blockbuster status by local standards. No Other Woman, a co-production with Viva Films, grossed P282 million, while Praybeyt Benjamin, also a co-production with Viva, grossed P342 million.

Zac Efron, Taylor Schilling Talk About Their Love Scenes in “The Lucky One”

Zac Efron, Taylor Schilling Talk About Their Love Scenes in “The Lucky One”

Zac Efron and Taylor Schilling, stars of Warner Bros.' new romantic drama “The Lucky One” discuss their sizzing love scenes, among other things, in the big-screen adaptation of the Nicholas Sparks bestseller.

In the film, U.S. Marine Sergeant Logan Thibault (Efron) returns from his third tour of duty in Iraq, with the one thing he credits with keeping him alive - a photograph he found of a woman he doesn’t even know. Discovering her name is Beth (Schilling) and where she lives, he shows up at her door, and ends up taking a job at her family-run local kennel. Despite her initial mistrust and the complications in her life, a romance develops between them, giving Logan hope that Beth could be much more than his good luck charm.

Q: Taylor, can you talk about the love story aspect of the film. Was it more challenging to play the emotional aspects or the physical aspects of the love scenes, which I imagine were carefully choreographed?

Taylor Schilling: Well, for me they’re completely different. And I would say, I spent a little bit more time in preparation for her emotional journey and the experiences that Beth was having with Logan and how that was relating to the rest of her life.

It’s interesting. It really did take more space for me to kind of uncover where she was coming from and where she was going and how this man was opening her up to true love finally after being so guarded for so long and having given up. The love scenes were a really natural outgrowth of where she was at that point in her story. And the physicality of it was pretty simple. Zac and I were really close at that point. We’d been working together and I really trusted him. And he’s a class act. So, it was really fun and comfortable.

Zac Efron: Yeah, it was. I mean, in the scene, they are out of practice. And they're totally in love and having fun and sort of doing it again for the first time. And I think that was easy to do. That’s sort of how we were in the moment anyway. So, a lot of that fit.

Q: There’s a scene where you say, 'You deserve to be kissed every day.' How easy is it to embrace the romantic genre?

Schilling: I think that, as a woman, those are pretty amazing words to hear.

Efron: Yeah, I’m amazed sometimes at the things that I say that in the moment that just sound great. And then if you put those on paper, they would probably be the cheesiest things in the entire world. In the moment, that’s love. Everything’s sort of heightened.

Q: Zac, what scene was the most difficult for you as an actor?

Efron: I think the hardest scenes stuff to film, by far, were all the scenes in Afghanistan at the very beginning. Just wearing that equipment, all the tactical stuff, and clearing that room was really challenging. And it was the middle of the night. It was like 3:00 in the morning. It was freezing. There was rubble everywhere, people screaming. Really, really talented actors all around us, and I was controlling a whole unit of Marines, real Marines. And my stress was through the roof. I really wanted this part to be authentic. So, that was the hardest part for me.

Q: Taylor, can you talk about what it's like for your character to live up to expectations that Logan has from carrying Beth's picture around all this time? You want her feet on the ground.

Schilling: Absolutely. Well, there was so much freedom in the fact that Beth had no idea that she was this angel to Logan. So, as an actor and as a character, I was totally freed from trying to be a perfect woman for him, or some kind of an angel. In fact, I think she was probably veering to the other edge of that, of making it more difficult for him, because she was feeling so guarded. Yet that would be paralyzing, I think. I probably wouldn’t respond well to that.

Q: Does it help you create a character when you’ve got a book? I mean, certainly in this case you’ve got Nicholas Sparks’ original novel as well as the script. Do you go to them or do you make the script your universe?

Efron: I think it’s somewhere in between. There are specific moments that come out of the book and out of the writing that are really an examination into a character’s thought process and what’s going on that are very fun to read, and offer all kinds of different explanations and little things that you can think about during the scene. But, also, you have to look in the context of the script. You can’t have all kinds of wild other things coming in.

Schilling: Yeah, I agree with that. I think for me it’s a little bit more based on the script and just what’s happening and gathering all the information you can, and then kind of letting it go and just being present with another actor. That seems to be right now what works for me.

Q: When you're portraying such a pure love story like this, do you just get carried away with the ideal of true love finding a way, or do you feel a responsibility to ground it in reality?

Schilling: Well, I hope that people can relate to it a little bit, or at least maybe that no matter what has been going on in their life or what their relationship is like or where they feel they are, that there is that potential for true love or romance available, no matter where you are in your life or what’s happened.

Opening across the Philippines on Thursday, April 19, “The Lucky One” is distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

“I believe women have the right to choose between what they want. Just go for what God wants you to do. Between the two, whatever it is, you must do your purpose in this world.
