It's a Battle among Beauty Queens this Saturday in Spooky Nights Presents ‘Korona’

Three gorgeous ladies with bodies to “die” for will star in this Saturday’s episode of Spooky Nights on GMA-7.

Carmi Martin, Isabel Daza and Bubbles Paraiso are the lead stars in the episode titled “Korona,” which is about a story of a former beauty queen who so desperately wants to keep her crown that she takes it to her grave.
Carmi plays Oria, a popular beauty queen in Barangay Papaitan during her prime. Now a mother, Oria has gained a few wrinkles here and there albeit her beauty has not at all faded. In fact, she passed this trait on to her daughter Mabel (Isabel Daza). Mabel dreams of following the footsteps of her mom, but the latter disapproves of the idea reasoning that there must only be one beauty queen in the family.
Mabel is so eager to pursue her dream and so she insisted in joining the Mutya ng Papaitan. But on the night she won the title, she was murdered. Pamela, Mabel’s arch-rival, was considered as the prime suspect and was sentenced to life imprisonment. After Mabel’s tragic death, Oria left Barangay Papaitan.
After a few years, Oria decided to come home and she spearheaded the return of the Mutya ng Papaitan beauty contest in honor of her deceased daughter. But all hell break loose when on the night of the coronation, Mabel’s fiery ghost suddenly appears freaking out every one in attendance. Her delusion is that she is still the reigning beauty queen of Papaitan and no one will ever deserve that title besides her. Will she eventually come to terms with reality?
Find that out this Saturday on Spooky Nights presents “Korona,” after Manny Many Prizes on GMA-7.

Karylle on ‘Kitchen Musical’ recognition: I’m living my dream

Karylle is happy for the successes of “The Kitchen Musical,” the Pan-Asian musical series she starred in along with Christian Bautista.

Besides winning awards at the recently-concluded New York Festivals, Karylle is also nominated in the Best Actress-Drama category of the Monte Carlo TV Festival to be held this June at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco.

“Sobrang happy. Nakakatuwa kasi nung nakita ko yung listahan, nakita ko may mga Tina Fey, Julianna Margulies. Syempre, yung puso ko tumambling talaga,” she said at the launch of the third single for her album “Roadtrip” on Monday, April 23.

Karylle

Besides Julianna Margulies of “The Good Wife,” Gretchen Mol and Kelly Macdonald of “Boardwalk Empire” and Lena Headey and Emilia Clarke of "Game of Thrones" are also nominated in the same category.

The “It’s Showtime” host shared, “It makes you realize that it’s a big world out there and there’s so many talented people and it just wants you to be better at what you do.”

She added the acclaim “The Kitchen Musical” is getting is much sweeter since the show has a number of Filipino cast members. Apart from her and Christian, Filipino actors Ikey Canoy, Thou Reyes and Art Acuna are also part of the said musical series.

Unexpected

Did she expect to receive this kind of recognition for her work in “The Kitchen Musical”?

“Nung dumating yung ‘Kitchen Musical,’ sabi ko, ‘okay ito, this is my dream role.’ Tapos ang tagal bago nagkatotoo, one year. So when they finally called me back, nandito na sila sa Philippines. I even had a different project that I had to give up,” Karylle shared.

The singer-actress further said, “For me, it wasn’t about what’s gonna happen. It’s just me living my dream, my dream role.”

Karylle added that the second season of “The Kitchen Musical” will most likely start production by next year.

As for local projects, Karylle said she’s just waiting for the right material and the right timing.

“Wala pa kasing dumarating na magandang script e. O kung meron man, hindi nagtutugma sa schedule,” she said. “Minsan dumarating talaga yung mga opportunities, and when they do come I just go for it.”

Right now, she’s busy co-hosting ABS-CBN’s noontime show “It’s Showtime.”

No conflict

As for the reported conflict between “It’s Showtime” co-host Vice Ganda and their director Bobet Vidanes, she said, “Actually wala namang naganap na ganun but of course pag di kasi masyadong sinasagot ang intriga, nagiging mas magulo siya. So since hindi naman ako directly involved, mahirap magsalita kasi hindi ko naman alam ang sasabihin ko.”

As one of his co-hosts, Karylle attests that Vice is not difficult to work with.

“Gusto kong sabihin na masarap siyang katrabaho and nararamdaman ko talaga yung pagmamahal niya in the sense na yung suporta niya is all out,” she said.

What Garrie Concepcion learned from mom Grace Ibuna

Garrie Concepcion is learning a lot about life and love just by observing mom Grace Ibuna and her late stepdad, Rep. Iggy Arroyo up close.

“They’ve proven that age is nothing but a number,” Garrie relates at the opening of the Aesthetic Institute of the Philippines (AIP) in Eisenhower st., Greenhills.

“It doesn’t matter how old you are. When you meet the right person who can make you happy, forever na talaga yon. Nakita ko na my mom was genuinely happy and contented.”

Garrie, whose biological father is Gabby Concepcion, doesn’t take it against her mom that she had two dads when Iggy was still alive. In fact, she feels blessed.

Garrie Concepcion

Very supportive

Iggy, she reveals, was very supportive of her singing career. He was very proud of her after he heard her sing.

“Napakinggan niya ang kanta ko. At sabi niya, 'Halika, concert na.' Sabi ko, 'Grabe naman, wala pa namang launching (concert).'”

Garrie notes that her stepdad knew how to pamper them without spoiling them.

“Miss ko na ang pagkamalambing niya,” sighs Garrie. Kapag nakita niyang bad mood ako, napapatawa ako sa mga corny jokes niya.”

Now that Grace is being eyed as Iggy’s replacement in Congress, Garrie vows she is right behind her mom in whatever she decides.

“If she decides to run para ituloy ang naiwan (ni Iggy), siyempre I will help her.”

But Grace knows she can’t do it all the way since Garrie has her own career to think of. For instance, Garrie can’t join Grace in Bacolod “to fix certain things” since the Backroom artist has released her self-titled debut album and wants to try hosting.

Garrie knows her mom won’t mind.

“Nung nasa London nga kami, pinapauwi na ako ng mom ko. Ang feeling niya, siya ang reason why na-stall ang career ko.”

'I’m here for you'

But Garrie chose to stay by her mom’s side, especially in the most trying moments of her life.

“I told her, 'Ma, you’ve been there for me. So ako naman, I’m here for you. Saka may plano naman si God. I know there’s a right time for everything.'”

That plan, as far as Garrie is concerned, is following in her father and elder sister KC’s footsteps.

“Ate KC gives me pieces of advice,” shares Garrie. “Kapag kabado ako she tells me it’s okay, that I should just have fun. Three Sundays ago, we were on the same stage in ASAP. I told her, 'Ate, hindi ako sumasayaw.' And she told me to just pretend na 'wala lang, sumasayaw lang tayo. Nandito naman ako.”

Dave Franco, James Franco's Brother is “21 Jump Street” Villain

Dave Franco, James Franco's Brother is “21 Jump Street” Villain

Soon, he will be recognized for his own achievements. But for now, actor-on-the-rise Dave Franco may have to settle with being referred to as the younger brother of James Franco. Dave's campaign to move out of big brother's shadow shifts to high gear as he plays the villain in Columbia Pictures' new action-comedy “21 Jump Street,” a recent No.1 box-office hit in the U.S.
In the film, Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Jenko (Channing Tatum) were enemies in high school who became unlikely friends in Police Academy. While they may not be the best cops on the beat, they have a chance to turn it around when they join the police department's secret Jump Street unit, run by Captain Dickson (Ice Cube). They trade in their guns and badges for backpacks and use their youthful appearances to go undercover...in high school!

Trouble is, teenagers today are nothing like what they were just a few years ago, and Schmidt and Jenko discover that everything they think they know about being a teenager, from sex to drugs to rock and roll, is all wrong.

Dave Franco plays the pivotal role as Eric, who sets most of the plot in motion. “Eric is dealing a new drug at his high school, which is the reason why Schmidt and Jenko are going undercover – they have to find out the source of this drug so they can eradicate it,” says co-director Christopher Miller.

Casting Dave Franco in the role was a way the film could contrast how high school has changed since Schmidt and Jenko’s first time around. “Dave Franco is essentially the perfect man,” says co-director Phil Lord. “He’s a nice, compact Greek/Roman-sized person – the girls go crazy for him. The cool kids nowadays are not the same from a teen movie from the 1980s – Eric drives Jenko nuts because he’s so cool.”

We saw a lot of people, but I knew we had to cast Davey, because he’s the one guy I kept trying to impress. I already had the part and I’m trying to impress the guy who’s auditioning, make him think I’m cool,” says co-star Jonah Hill who's also one of the film's producers. “That’s exactly what we wanted for the part.”

It was important to all of the filmmakers to make Franco’s character well-rounded. “Everyone should be a hero in their own narrative,” says Lord. “I always thought that the character shouldn’t be an evil thug. The kids I knew in high school who were dealing drugs were kids who were making messed-up choices – they weren’t evil, they were funny or charming or interesting, and had you known them, you’d have good things to say about them. We thought this was a good opportunity to show a grounded, real person who happened to be dealing drugs.”

With that in mind, the filmmakers and Franco focused on the character’s concern for the environment. “You have the cool guy talking about composting and finding ways to conserve water, but at the same time he’s dealing drugs,” says Franco. “I felt it was a new take on the character. It was a lot of fun because I wasn’t playing a straight jerk. He’s full of it, but he’s also charming – you get to see the more vulnerable side to the character.”

Dave Franco recently starred in the DreamWorks horror film “Fright Night,” as well as in the Funny or Die web series, “Acting with James Franco.” The first installment in the series “Sense Memory” is one of the most viewed videos on Funny or Die, attracting over 120,000 views in its first month. Franco also wrote and starred in his own Funny or Die video, “You’re so Hot,” featuring Christopher Mintz-Plasse, which garnered over one million hits. Franco followed up with “Go F--- Yourself,” which has reached nearly 800,000 hits to date. Franco also starred with Emma Roberts in the MTV Super Video for Cults’ “Go Outside,” which has been seen my more than 500,000 viewers online. An avid writer, Franco began writing well before he became involved in acting.

Opening across the Philippines in May, “21 Jump Street” will be distributed in the Philippines by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International. Dolphy Quizon, on his interview with DZMM last Monday, admitted that he would like to be named National Artist.

But, if he failed to make it in ex-PGMA's list of the country's National Artists in 2009, what better reason could he and his allies have now to be finally be given the said recognition?

Do you think he deseres the title better than Nora Aunor and Vilma Santos? Just asking.

Dimples doesn’t advise young ladies to marry early

Dimples Romana has no regrets putting her showbiz career on hold to raise a family.

“I’m really thankful my husband and I are celebrating our 9th anniversary in June. I think it all paid off. The sacrifices are all worth it,” Dimples said in an interview at Promil Pre-School i-Shine Talent Camp in SM Sky Dome on Saturday, April 21.

The actress grew up wanting to have her own family at a young age and feels that she “was born to be a mom.”

She married Boyet Ahmee, an engineer when she was only 19 and working on the TV series “Kay Tagal Kang Hinintay.”

But she doesn’t advise today’s young ladies to start their own family at a young age because times are different now.

“I really don’t advise young ladies to have their own family early kasi nag-iba na rin yung generation ngayon eh. Iba na rin yung dynamics ng pamilya ngayon. Now you really have to make sure that you have the perfect partner,” Dimples explains.

Since she joined showbiz at 12 years old, does Dimples see her daughter following in her footsteps?

“I just let her be as much as possible. So, far what she’s been doing is figure skating and swimming. I don’t know about acting, maybe it’s too early to tell pa,” Dimples replied.

Since she resumed her showbiz career, Dimples has been doing projects one after another. Aside from acting in various TV dramas, Dimples hosts “Kabuhayang Swak na Swak” with Bobby Yan.

“Masaya. Nagpapasalamat ako sa Diyos, nararamdaman kong mahal ako ng network ko. Hindi rin kasi ako mahanap (ng trabaho). I don’t really know also how to demand. Natutuwa lang ako na everybody from Star Magic knows what we really want to do,” she said.

Dimples is happy her daughter can enjoy watching her on TV and other projects. She is happy to host the talent camp (with Xian Lim and Matteo Guidicelli) as she gets to join other kids and moms.

Beyond the professional

“This goes beyond the professional. This is more personal for me. Ito ang passion ko sa buhay eh. The reason why I married early is because I felt I was born to be a mom,” she said.

Dimples credits her husband for allowing her to strike a balance between career and family.

“Mabait yung asawa ko. Boy supports me totally. I support him also. So give and take lang kami. Hindi mahirap mag-balance kung hindi ka pinapahirapang mag-balance,” she said.

Filipino singer's "journey" takes Tribeca stage

NEW YORK (Reuters) - At age 40, Arnel Pineda lived every wannabe rock star's dream, middle-aged fan's fantasy and even one poor country's hope for financial success.

A little more than five years ago, as videos of Pineda performing Journey cover tunes played on YouTube, he sat at home in the Philippines on the verge of giving up his dream of a singing and songwriting career.

But those YouTube clips eventually earned Pineda an audition for rock band Journey, whose hits of the 1980s include "Who's Crying Now" and "Open Arms," and he went on to become their lead singer in an unlikely career trajectory that is now part of Journey lore.

A look inside Pineda's rise to fame and his struggles with rock 'n' roll stardom are the subject of a documentary that is playing at this week's Tribeca Film Festival.

Singer Arnel Pineda performs with the band Journey on NBC's Today Show in New York July 29, 2011

"Don't Stop Believin'" is named after the band's hit anthem during the height of its success, and it represents Pineda's own inspirational rise from begging on the streets in Manila to singing around the world in large stadiums packed with fans.

Pineda, whose Filipino background initially surprised Journey fans who longed for the voice of former frontman Steve Perry, told Reuters he winced when watching himself on film.

"It was actually very difficult because, as we all know, I am not this Hollywood guy who looks great and tall," he said.

"But the other side of me was saying, this movie needs to be seen by a lot of people out there who have been dreaming to become somebody, to get recognized with their talents, with their God-given things they have in themselves."

HIGHS AND LOWS OF ROCK STARDOM

The documentary follows Pineda from his nervous first audition to being on the Journey tour bus and inside hotel rooms with the band. Audiences see how Pineda handles the fame back stage before a show, off stage signing autographs and on stage, sometimes while sick, on a gruelling first tour in which he tries hard to live up to fans' expectations.

"It was difficult. We all have our limits, we get tired and whether we like it or not, we would feel itchy or not comfortable at some point. We just wanted our times alone. But since we signed up for it, whether we liked it or not we have to face the camera," Pineda said.

The worst part, he said, was the constant travelling without his family, being exhausted and trying to "sound golden all the time." But he adds that it was uplifting "when you see these fans, smiling, happy, hugging each other, crying when they hear their favourite songs."

It is difficult to know from watching "Don't Stop Believin'" whether Pineda, now 44, hit it off well with his new bandmates. He said that while on tour they share stories, but their ages -- several members the band's current lineup are in their 50s and 60s -- meant they often had different interests in life. Pineda called the Journey music their "common denominator."

Some critics said the film best captured the band's rejuvenation.

"Not unlike Journey itself, "Don't Stop Believin'" hits corny but impassioned notes, resonating emotionally even (or especially) through cliches. Certainly the film makes a case for the validity of the reformulated band," wrote the critic for show business publication Variety.

One of Pineda's biggest fears was living up to Journey's most famous lead singer, Perry, now 63, who left the band in 1987 and returned for three years in 1995.

"I had to convince them I was the real deal," Pineda said, who sang in clubs in throughout the Philippines and in Hong Kong but gave up his solo career when the Journey call came.

"This was the hardest thing that I have done in my life, though I've had my share of hardships," he said.

Pineda's hard times include being homeless for a time and begging for money on Manila's streets. He struggled with drugs and alcohol, and he filmmakers take him and his bandmates to some of his old Manila haunts in "Don't Stop Believin.'"

The group currently is on a break from touring and will start again in July. Pineda is spending most of his break in Manila, where he has three boys and is expecting a baby girl in July with his wife.

In the Philippines, his fame now is widespread. He is shown in the film meeting former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

"I try to live under the radar as much as possible," he said, even though he is constantly approached by fans for photographs, pep talks and events. "I tell myself, it makes them happy so why shouldn't I give it."

And most of all, he wants his tale to inspire everyone. "Life begins at 40," he said, "that's what they say."
