Derek: TV5’s offer is closer to my passion

Derek Ramsay said he chose TV5 over ABS-CBN because the projects offered to him by the Kapatid network are closer to his passion—sports.

“(Making the decision) was a long process. But the turning point was pinakita sa akin ang gagawin ko sa ABS for the next couple of years,TV5 showed me what they were offering me for the next couple of years. At ang offer ng TV5 na projects was close to my passion,” he said in a press conference Tuesday, April 10, at the Edsa Shangri-La hotel in Mandaluyong City.

As earlier reported, Derek’s first project with TV5 will be “The Amazing Race Philippines.” The actor-host will also host TV5’s Philippine primer of the London Olympics this July.

He believes that “The Amazing Race,” which will start this June, is “perfect for his personality” since he also loves traveling.

Derek Ramsay

Shared passion

Derek admitted ABS-CBN offered him a good line-up of projects. “I was going to get to work with the likes of Angel Locsin who I have wanted to work with for the longest time,” he said.

But he added he was wired and born with a passion for sports.

“I am very passionate about my sports. Acting, I never believed I’d become an actor. I can’t believe till today that I am an actor. I’m so blessed. I’m beginning to love this craft,” Derek explained. “But ever since I was born, sports has been my passion. And I’d never turn my back on that.”

The projects TV5 offered made Derek realize that he and the Kapatid network share the same passion.

“With all the success, which I appreciate so much, with ABS-CBN, at the end of the day, pag pumapasok ka sa trabaho, gusto mong pumasok na you love your job. Which I did in ABS-CBN, but if it’s your passion it’s a totally different thing,” he said. “We looked at the two offers. Yung passion ko lumalabas talaga dito.”

Didn’t ABS-CBN pick up on his enthusiasm for sports? Derek said it may not be part of the network’s plans or goals. “That’s not their (ABS-CBN’s) objective,” he said. “With TV5, it is a part of their network.”

TV5 airs sports programs on AKTV on IBC 13.

According to his manager Joji Dingcong, TV5 first expressed their interest on Derek even before the success of his movies “No Other Woman”and “Praybeyt Benjamin,” two of the highest grossing films in the country last year.

Not P 600 M

Derek also denied reports that his three-year contract with TV5 is worth P 600 million.

“Nowhere near that. I wish,” the actor said.

He admitted that his current TV5 contract is higher than ABS-CBN’s offer but “it was in the similar range.” “But that’s why hindi nga pera e, kasi nga halos magkapareho,” Derek explained.

“I think I’ll be very proud of myself if I can help this network move forward and grow bigger. That’s something money can’t buy,” he added.

Derek said he pays no attention to negative comments saying he’dlose his luster as an actor in TV5.

“Ako, binigyan ako ng proyekto, hindi ko ginagawa paramaging sikat ako. I’m gonna give my best. That’s something given to me, I have a responsibility, gagawin ko lahat ng makakaya para madeliver yung gusto nila."

Gary V: Dancing not as easy anymore

Instead of trying to keep up with young performers, Gary Valenciano would rather stick to his own style and pace as age now plays a big factor in his performances.

At 47, Gary still has that young, energetic vibe when performing onstage. So it came as a surprise when he reveled that doing those powerful dance moves is “not as easy (as it was) anymore.”

“I don’t want to look as if I’m forcing it. Never will I do that. I’d rather be tired trying than saying I’m okay but my tongue is hanging,” Gary said at the press conference of his concert, “On Higher Ground” on Tuesday, April 10, in ABS-CBN compound.

He shared that the show was originally planned as a dance concert. But since it is a series of eight shows, “Gary V: On Higher Ground” will be a mix of his greatest hits, ballads and contemporary songs. The show, co-directed by his son, Paolo Valenciano, will still showcase Gary’s signature dances and songs.

Gary Valenciano

“I must admit, at 47 years old, there comes a time when I have to say to myself, “Gary, I know you like to move. Okay lang, go ahead and move.’ But when you see the likes of Billy Crawford, Gab (Valenciano) and John Prats, (you tell yourself), “Gary, you don’t have to try keep up with those guys. You just have to move your own way and you’re fine.” So, that’s what I’ve been doing with this concert.”

“When you have the likes of Wally (Bayola) and Jose (Manalo) step out onstage, maririnig ninyo lang ang pangalan nila, alam ninyo kaagad na tatawa kayo. Hindi ninyo alam kung anong gagawin nila, pero tatawa kayo sigurado. People go out for this today,” Gary said when asked about his guesting in Wally and Jose’s recent concert.

Gary also talked about Anne Curtis, who got mixed reactions after she staged a concert even if she is not known as a singer.

He said people love Anne for who she is—whether she is a singer or not.

“Kasi, maraming nagtanong sa akin niyan, eh, ‘Bakit ganoon? Hindi naman singer?’ And then I look at them and say, ‘Hey, you wanna try what she’s doing? I mean, come on! Just let her ride that crest. Let her ride that wave.’ She is not known to be a singer, but she is a good actress. She’s a great host. And people love her for that,” Gary said.

He feels grateful people still continue to support him regardless of what’s in and what’s not in the scene right now.

“I am thankful na after 29 years, regardless of what I do, whether I come out in ASAP or I come out in a concert, people still go. And I’m very fortunate that people respect me in that manner.”

“On Higher Ground” will be held at the Music Museum on April 12, 13, 19, 20, 26 and 27 and on May 9 and 10, with guests Julianne, Juan Miguel Salvador and Manouevers.

Slater flattered at being compared to Sam

Pinoy Big Brother (PBB) Big Winner Slater Young is ready to try showbiz and feels flattered to be compared to actor and former PBB housemate Sam Milby.

Slater is overwhelmed at his recent win saying that “everything still feels like a dream.”

The Cebuano engineer, who admitted he entered the house for the challenge, expressed his interest in joining showbiz.

“I’d love to try acting and kung may opportunity to enter showbiz, I’d love to do it,” Slater said at the press conference of the Pinoy Big Brother Big Four on Wednesday, April 11, in ABS-CBN compound.

Slater idolizes the likes of Pen Medina and JM de Guzman and hopes to work with KC Concepcion and Kim Chiu someday. He hasn’t tried hosting yet, but is also interested to try it out.

Slater Young

“Sila KC Concepcion and Kim Chiu, may aura sila na simple lang pero may dating pa rin. Sa acting, gusto ko yung mga ginagawa nila Sir Pen Medina, yung mga character actors talaga. Idols ko sila,” he said.

Like Sam?

Before PBB, Slater was managed by talent agency Cornerstone, which also handles Sam. This and their status as former PBB housemates and their good-natured personalities make the comparison between Sam and Slater inevitable.

“It’s a big compliment, knowing Sam na very humble person. Friends kami, magkasundo talaga kami,” Slater said.

Does he see himself competing with Sam who has already established himself in local showbiz and is trying his luck in Hollywood?

“I don’t think so naman. Wala naman iyon sa personalities namin na maging competitors,” Slater replied.

PBB has launched the showbiz careers of many popular celebrities now such as Sam, Gerald Anderson, Kim Chiu and Ejay Falcon. However, Slater also keeps an open mind and acknowledges the fact that not all PBB housemates can make it big in showbiz.

He said that he is ready to accept if showbiz will not work out for him.

“Yes, ready ako doon. I consider everything now as a blessing, so kung ano lang ang mabibigay ng Diyos, Siya na po ang bahala,” he said.

Role model

“Hindi ko rin naman inexpect na magiging Big Winner ako. I wanted to try show business just for the challenge,” Slater added.

He admitted that his family wanted him to help in their own business. But they are now very supportive of his endeavors.

“Ngayon sobrang supportive sila, natutuwa sila sa mga nangyayari sa akin. Malaking compliment iyon para sa family namin na naging Big Winner ako,” Slater said.

Unlike other PBB grand winners who have humble beginnings, Slater comes from a well-off family. Slater said he will give part of his prize for the education of the children of their employees.

Slater thinks it was his leadership, humility and being an inspiration to others that made him the Big Winner.

“Nakita raw po nila yung pagiging role model ko. I showed humility and leadership and sense of growth rin. nagstart ako ng sobrang mahiyain and I grew up talaga sa bahay. I think nagiging inspirasyon rin ako,” Slater said.

How Diego plans to keep memory of dad Angelo Castro, Jr. alive

Now that he’s taking over his late father’s role as head of the family, Diego Castro, son of broadcast icon Angelo Castro, Jr., plans to keep his promise to his dad that he will take care of the loved ones he left behind.

“Dad said, ‘You better take care of them.’ He didn’t want to go because he was scared. I told him, ‘Dad, don’t worry. Go to sleep. I’ll take care of them’,” Diego recalls at the tribute family and friends gave to Angelo on Tuesday, April 10 at Dolphy Theatre in the ABS-CBN compound in Quezon City.

Diego and his mother, June Keithley were overwhelmed by the outpour of support and love they saw from the late news anchor’s peers in the industry.

Now that his dad is gone, Diego knows life will never be the same again. Diego will miss their family bonding, especially on Sundays when he and his dad would cook together.

Diego Castro during the tribute to the late veteran news anchor Angelo Castro Jr. held at the Dolphy Theater at the ABS-CBN compound in Quezon City.

“I think the hardest for me is every Sunday because Sundays are reserved for the family. Starting this Sunday, ako na ang mag-isang magluluto. Wala na siya. It’s going to be hard,” Diego explains.

He shared that his father never failed to give him pieces of advice on career and family.

“As everyone else remembers him, he’s a perfectionist. No matter how good I am in my craft, it wasn’t good enough. He’s always ‘push, push and keep on pushing’,” Diego reveals.

He vowed to continue family traditions Angelo observed when he was still alive.

Angelo, who succumbed to lung cancer on Maundy Thursday, anchored "The World Tonight" for more than 20 years. He also created “TV Patrol,” which is celebrating its 25th anniversary and is the longest Filipino newscast to date. He also became ABS-CBN's Senior Vice President for News and Current Affairs.

Philippines deploys second ship in China standoff

The Philippines deployed a second vessel to tiny islands in the South China Sea on Thursday in a bid to protect its sovereignty in an increasingly tense territorial standoff with China.

Authorities said a coast guard boat joined the Philippines' biggest warship at Scarborough Shoal, where two Chinese surveillance vessels were protecting a group of Chinese fishermen from being arrested.

"It has arrived in the area. It is there to support our navy and to show our flag," foreign affairs department spokesman Raul Hernandez told reporters, referring to the 56-metre-long (184-foot) search and rescue coast guard vessel.

"It is mandated to protect our seas."

A Philippine navy photo shows Chinese surveillance ships off Scarborough Shoal. The Philippines deployed a second vessel to tiny islands in the South China Sea on Thursday in a bid to assert its

However Hernandez also emphasised the Philippines was intent on ending the standoff peacefully, and quickly.

"We are confident the two sides will find a diplomatic solution as they are committed to finding one," he said.

"We want this to be resolved immediately. Our people are there, the Chinese fishermen are there. It is hot and they could run out of food so we want this to be resolved as soon as possible."

The dispute began on Sunday when Philippine authorities found eight Chinese fishing boats at the shoal, a group of tiny islands and reefs 124 nautical miles west of the country's main island of Luzon.

The Philippines accused the fishermen of being there illegally, asserting the area was Philippine territory because it was within the country's 200-nautical-mile exclusive economic zone, as recognised by international law.

However China claims all of the South China Sea as its own, even waters up to the coasts of other countries, and Chinese authorities insisted the fishermen were allowed to be at the shoal.

Competing claims to the South China Sea have long been regarded as one of Asia's potential flashpoints for military conflict.

Aside from the Philippines and China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Malaysia and Brunei also have competing claims to the waters.

More than 70 Vietnamese sailors were killed in 1988 when China and Vietnam battled for control of the Spratlys, an archipelago south of Scarborough Shoal.

The sea holds huge economic and political significance, as it is believed to sit atop vast oil and gas resources, is home to vast fishing grounds and hosts shipping lanes that carry a third of the globe's maritime trade.

In the latest flare-up in tensions, the Philippines deployed its navy flagship vessel to Scarborough Shoal immediately after the Chinese fishermen were discovered there.

But the two Chinese surveillance vessels appeared on the scene on Tuesday and blocked the Philippine warship from arresting the fishermen, who had reportedly hauled in corals, live sharks and some endangered species.

"For us, this is illegal fishing, illegal poaching and that is why our navy is there to protect our sovereignty and assert our rights," Hernandez said.

The Chinese embassy in Manila released a statement on Wednesday insisting the waters belonged to China and ordering the Philippine warship to leave immediately.

In Beijing, foreign ministry spokesman Liu Weimin accused the Philippines of "harassing" the Chinese fishermen and said a protest had been lodged.

"We urge the Philippine side... not to make new troubles and create conditions for the friendly relations of the two countries," Liu said.

The Philippines and Vietnam complained last year of increasingly aggressive acts by China in staking its claim to the South China Sea.

The Philippines accused Chinese vessels of firing warning shots at Filipino fishermen, as well as harassing an oil exploration vessel and placing markers on islets within Philippine territory.

However this week's standoff is the highest-profile in recent years.

ABS-CBN Regional News Promotes Disaster Preparedness

ABS-CBN Regional News Promotes Disaster Preparedness

ABS-CBN Regional News has recently launched segments on its regional morning shows and newscasts that will give important information to viewers on survival tips and how to prepare for disasters and emergency situations.

The move came after a string of calamities and disasters that hit the country in recent months and caught residents by surprise like typhoon Sendong in Cagayan de Oro and Iligan, and a series of earthquakes in Negros, Cebu, and other provinces in the south.

ABS-CBN president and chief operating officer Charo Santos-Concio pointed out that an average of 20 typhoons hit the country annually. She said, “It is about time we plan and prepare to minimize loss of lives and properties.”

ABS-CBN Regional Network Group head Jerry Bennett, on the other hand, believes that the project upholds to network’s commitment in rendering service to Filipinos worldwide.

Getting the community ready for any type of calamity through timely information on TV and radio is part of our service to the public,” Bennett said.

ABS-CBN Regional News head Charie Villa said the launch of the segments was timed in March, when local government units observe Fire Prevention Month by conducting fire drills and encouraging their constituents to make their areas a non-fire risk zone.

Recently, TV Patrol Southern Tagalog in Batangas presented “Ligtas Ako!” that teaches the people in the region on how to prepare a 72-hour survival kit at home. This was followed by TV Patrol Central Visayas’ “Andam Ka Na Ba?” and 15 more segments in local TV Patrols.

The earthquakes and its aftershocks that jolted the southern part of the country left more than 100 people dead and thousands homeless.

Another 5.2 magnitude earthquake hit Masbate City and its neighboring provinces that injured 10 people. Now, it left some residents of the province in trauma.

Zac Efron, ‘Lucky’ to Play a War Hero

Zac Efron, ‘Lucky’ to Play a War Hero

Zac Efron stars in Warner Bros.’ new romantic drama “The Lucky One” as U.S. Marine Sergeant Logan Thibault on his third tour of duty in Iraq. Almost immediately, he is thrust into a firefight that changes his life forever.

In the film, Logan returns home from his tour of duty, with the one thing he credits with keeping him alive - a photograph he found of a woman he doesn’t even know. Discovering her name is Beth (Taylor Schilling) and where she lives, he shows up at her door, and ends up taking a job at her family-run local kennel. Despite her initial mistrust and the complications in her life, a romance develops between them, giving Logan hope that Beth could be much more than his good luck charm.

The role itself changed Efron, who literally had to transform himself physically and emotionally, to look, move and react like a Marine who had served in a war zone and seen far more violence and loss than his family or peers at home could even imagine.

Director Scott Hicks explains, “When we first see Logan, we need to know what he’s gone through and understand some of the sense of trauma that he carries with him out of this conflict. I was very impressed by Zac’s commitment to not only change his physique but also to get into the mindset of a soldier. He created the slightly stony exterior of someone a little mysterious - a character we don’t know a great deal about at first.

Initially I wasn’t convinced I could pull this off,” Efron recalls, “but the more I thought about it, and the more I talked to Scott, I realized if there was ever going to be a chance to play a role so different from what I’ve played before, this was it. I knew I had to put in the work to be able to play Logan, and I felt capable in Scott’s hands.”

Producer Denise Di Novi says, “One of my favorite things about being a producer is watching actors reinvent themselves, and that’s what Zac did. He just looks like a different person in this film. How he walks, how he stands, how he holds himself…it was a thrill to see him become Logan.”

Producer McCormick concurs, “Even though he’d never done anything like it before, Zac was really able to bring a very specific and unique take on Logan. We literally saw somebody who’s been so youthful in every other movie legitimately turn into a man in front of our very eyes. That really helped make Nick Spark’s character come to life. Apart from looking like a Marine, Zac brought a reservoir of pain and strength in equal measure.

Efron’s preparation to play a seasoned Marine included the physical rigors of training several months prior to production with military consultant James Dever, a retired Sergeant Major who spent twenty-five years in the U.S. Marine Corps, and rising at 3:30 a.m. during filming to continue the regimen. That and a strict diet added 20 pounds of bulk to the actor. To complete the exterior metamorphosis, Efron buzzed his signature hair.

The internal work was equally, if not more, demanding. In order to get into his character’s psyche, Efron travelled with Hicks to Camp Pendleton to talk to Marines and see combat through their eyes.

Efron recalls, “When I got there it was like stepping into a different world. They stood with a purpose. They had laser focus, never broke eye contact. This is my generation, on the front lines. They’ve experienced some pretty gruesome things. We sat and talked for several hours and they were the most amazing conversations I’ve ever had with anybody. In terms of research, it was priceless. I can’t thank them enough. The stories and personal feelings they shared became part of the canvas for Logan.”

We took very seriously what these young guys go through serving overseas,” Di Novi remarks. “Zac respected it, absorbed it, really internalized it, and I think you see that on film. He does a great job in honoring those guys’ experiences.”

Interestingly, a number of the Marines with whom Efron and Hicks met had a variety of good luck charms that they had carried with them into battle. Hicks describes, “One sergeant took out the remnants of what was barely recognizable as a playing card, which he’d taken with him on multiple tours. Once he’d lost it, which disturbed him deeply, but in the most extraordinary circumstances he found it again, quite by chance. The way he felt about it was very moving.”

Opening across the Philippines on Thursday, April 19, “The Lucky One” is distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

After being dubbed as the Pinoy Justin Bieber during the finals of PGT Season 3 last year where he placed as a runner-up, Khalil Ramos, will not embark into recording, yet, as his first showbiz project is a role in a Kapamilya teleserye

Khalil will debut into the acting arena as he was chosen to be one of the three leading men of Kathryn Bernardo in the upcoming Primetime TV series “The Princess and I.”

In an interview by Push.ph, Khalil revealed that he went through a series of acting workshops in preparation for his first acting role.

I’m really pressured kasi lahat ng kasali dito ay actors and actresses na talaga pero of course this is also giving me the motivation to do my best in everything. Of course you can’t really take away all the pressure kasi I’m working with actors who are experienced na. Bale this is really my first time so yung first taping ko was my first taping ever rin my entire life,” he said.

Khalil was thankful for his co-star Kathryn Bernardo for giving him some advice in acting.

Working with Kathryn has been so far so good kasi she’s really nice to me. Parang the way we’re comfortable with each other now parang friends na best friend. So far masaya kasi on the set. So far so good rin kasi mabait talaga si Kath sa akin, marami siyang binibigay na advice tungkol sa acting kasi this is my first time na sumabak sa acting,” he shared.

This is why Kathryn calls Khalil “baby bro” even though the 16-year-old heartthrob is two months older than her.

www.showbiznest.com

Gary Valenciano is set to stage a series of concerts at the Music Museum called "Gary V: On Higher Ground," marking his 29th anniversary in the industry and the 25th year of his company Manila Genesis Entertainment & Management, Inc.

As Gary V consistently inspired his millions of fans through his craft as a singer, musician, songwriter, video producer, dancer, actor, musical arranger and a multi-awarded television host/performer for 9 years on the undisputed top-rating musical variety show, "ASAP", he admit to still feel nervous whenever he performs on stage.

Hindi na bago ito. Dati na akong ninenerbiyos bago ako mag-show. Ngayon pa kaya hindi.

But I'm also very excited because we have come up with new routines and a lot of surprises for this series. I am particularly excited for our opening production number. It will be awesome. I really hope it works the way I envisioned it.” he said.

Gary V also shared why he decided to stage his anniversary concert in Music Museum, a much smaller venue compare to Smart-Araneta Coliseum where Anne Curtis, Vice Ganda, Jose Manalo and Wally Bayola had a very successful sold-out concerts.

Music Museum is an intimate venue. Family members can be together. Gary V explained.

He further said “Tanggap kong may mga bagong breed of performers ngayon na kinatuwaang panoorin ng tao. Humahanga ako sa kanila, sa kanilang naiibang palabas. At kung may pagkakataon na isinasama nila ako sa kanilang mga palabas hindi ako tumatanggi. Bukod sa namamalas ko ang pagkakaiba ng aming palabas, inaalam ko rin kung saan ako puwedeng matuto sa kanila. Itinuturing ko silang mga novelty artists. Pero, ako naniniwala na hindi ako magsu-survive sa novelty.

I was part of the Jose Manalo-Wally Bayola concert. Nakita ko how people reacted to them. Also Anne Curtis. Let her ride that crest, her wave. When she sings people laugh. That’s Anne and for now gusto siya ng tao.”

For his concert series at Music Museum, fans can look forward to witnessing Gary V in his best element as he performs his greatest hits as well as some of today's hottest chart-toppers, party anthems, and homegrown favorites. Fans can also expect groundbreaking and pioneering technology and excellent audio-visuals through their corporate partners Videosonic and Soundcheck.

Gary V will be performing with two world-class musicians, Awit Awards 2008 Best Female/Best New Female Singer Julianne and Juan Miguel Salvador, formerly of Rage Band and now the musical director of Authority, which represented the country in the 2005 Global Battle of the Bands in London.

"Gary V: On Higher Ground" happens at Music Museum on April 12, 13, 19, 20, 26, and 27; and May 9 and 10. The show will be for the benefit of UNICEF and Shining Light Foundation. The show is supported by ABS-CBN, MYX, Smart, Soundcheck, Videosonic, Gold's Gym, Aficionado, Coca Cola, Goldilocks, Lee, Universal Records, Star Records, Studio V, Essensuals Toni & Guy, Fernando's, with media partners: Radio High 105.9, Crossover 105.1, Monster Radio RX 93.1, Tambayan, Magic 89.9, DZMM 630, Philippine Daily Inquirer, Philippine Star, Business World, People's Journal and People's Tonight.

Steven Tyler: When I hear you sing, I forget where I am. You have the nerve to wear Jennifer’s shoes.
