Juan Karlos Labajo's Life Story To Be Turned Into a TV Drama Special

“The Voice Kids Philippines” second runner-up Juan Karlos “JK” Labajo will inspire the viewers of ABS-CBN’s “Maalaala Mo Kaya” through his life story that will be aired this Saturday (September 27). The 13-year-old “The Voice Kids” heartthrob will portray himself in the upcoming episode.

Contrary to public perception that he is well-off, the half-German and half-Filipino teen singer will share in “MMK” the life of poverty that he faced since birth. Together with his grandmother and uncle who raised him, JK grew up thinking that he should work hard for everything that their family has.

A lot of people think that I come from a rich family because of the way I look. But what they don’t know is that we had huge debts in Cebu and we transferred from one house to another because of poverty,” said JK who grew up not knowing his German father while his mother was far away because of work.

When did JK realize he wanted to become a singer? How did he manage to wow the three coaches despite the fact that he lost his mother five days before his audition in “The Voice Kids?”

Also part of the upcoming episode are Phoemela Baranda, Janus Del Prado, Miguel Vergara, Jeric Raval, and Ces Quesada. It is directed by Garry Fernando and written by Benson Logronio and Arah Jell Badayos. “MMK” is led by business unit head Malou Santos and creative manager Mel Mendoza-del Rosario.

Capturing the hearts of Filipino viewers all over the world for the past 23 years, “Maalaala Mo Kaya” has legions of fans from different generations who cried, laughed, fell in love, and got inspired through the real-life narratives of the show’s letter-senders.

Richard Poon Join TFC and the Filipino Community at the ‘Galing ng Filipino’ Festival Parade in Tokyo, Japan

 TFC Press Release

The end of the summer season in Japan draws near but the sunny, festive mood continues as the Filipino community (Fil Comm) welcomed thousands to the 3rd installment of the biggest event in the country, the Philippine Festival in Ueno Park, Central Tokyo just recently, in partnership with premiere network The Filipino Channel (TFC).

The “Philippine Festival,” previously known as the “Barrio Fiesta sa Yokohama,” has been bringing the tradition of the Filipino fiesta to Japan since 2012 with the support of the Philippine Embassy headed by His Excellency Manuel Lopez, Ambassador of the Philippines to Japan.  Every year has become a showcase of the country’s cuisine, costumes and other elements of its culture.   This year, the fiesta supported by the Japan Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) as well, honors the time-honored friendship between the country and the Philippines.

Galing ng Filipino, Ituloy Mo!

This year, media sponsor and staunch partner TFC also has a reason to celebrate as the network celebrates its 20th anniversary.  ABS-CBN Asia Pacific Managing Director Ailene Averion said that TFC’s celebration and the community’s festivities are intertwined.

In the recreation of the Philippines fiestas, the Fil Comm promotes the Filipino culture and talent.  This goal resonates with TFC’s own theme which pays tribute to the ‘Galing ng Filipino’ (Greatness of the Filipino).  TFC forges ahead with the ‘Greatness of the Filipino’ by sharing world-class talents which ABS-CBN TFC is known for, in events such as these.”

She adds, “But beyond the entertainment value, TFC’s role lies in how it helps Filipinos remain connected with pieces of home found in homegrown content and these kinds of events.”

For its anniversary offering for the Philippine Festival, TFC brought Big Band Crooner and ASAP Sessionista Richard Poon, much to the delight of Filipino fans.  Consistent with TFC’s anniversary theme “Galing ng Filipino, ituloy mo!” Poon showcased the world-class Filipino talent via his jazzy ensemble, including the well-applauded Rey Valera original “Kahit Maputi Na Ang Buhok Ko” which turned the crowd nostalgic.

After Poon’s performance, TFC treated the fans to a trivia game where two lucky Filipinas won Poon’s albums while others got the chance to see him up close and personal.  To give the other members of the audience a memorabilia of his performance, Poon indulged the Pinoys in a group ‘selfie,’ a trend whereby people take photos of themselves or their companions.

Filipinos' 'Pagiging Masiyahin' or Love for Fun Showcased

Meantime, true to the Filipino's love for fun or 'pagiging masiyahin,' community members recreated more elements of the fiesta via the cultural performances and colorful booths displaying both sumptuous cuisine and a sundry of goods.

TFC on the other hand, recreated the Pinoy sala (family living room), complete with veritable picture frames of Kapamilya stars, reminiscent of family pictures that adorn homes back in the homeland.  In TFC’s recreated sala, the team conducted a mini reality segment where attendees were asked to sit in and watch TFC shows and react naturally.  Mechelle Gumapac of Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture showed the best reaction and won a gift certificate and a smartphone.

From sights and sounds, the “Philippine Festival” in partnership with TFC, continues to honor the tradition that is the fiesta and the best there is in Philippine culture and talent.

Chloë Grace Moretz Finds Comfort in the Hands of 'The Equalizer'

Columbia Pictures Press Release

Coming off the success of “If I Stay,” Chloë Grace Moretz now joins the cast of Columbia Pictures' new action-thriller “The Equalizer” as Teri – a young girl who has been forced into a life of intimidation and terror. After meeting with McCall (Denzel Washington), her story will reawaken in him a desire for justice.

For Moretz, it’s easy to see that the title role is perfect for Washington. “He’s so Denzel in the way he does his job,” she says, “McCall can be the most sweet, charming guy, with a huge smile on his face – and the next minute, he’s a killer, and you’re thinking, ‘WHOA! That happened quickly!’

Of her role as Teri, the young actress says, “When I first heard that the character is a prostitute I thought that it would be a `Taxi Driver' type of role – pushing the boundaries a bit. But I was surprised. The role doesn't glorify prostitution nor make it cotton-candy. You never see her in the actual act of prostitution. The focus isn't on her profession but who she is as a person. You see that there is still a spark in her eye and that she yearns for something greater and if she can get out of this scary world, she could go on to a normal life. That’s what I loved about the character – this inner hope that was built into her story.”

Moretz says that inner hope is the basis of the bond that Teri forms with McCall. “He sees this dream in her,” she says. “It’s like there are two panes of glass – you have this terrified little girl, and right in front of it, a girl who’s been thrust into a terrifying world, putting on the face of a total badass to survive.”

Denzel Washington says that Teri, too, has a gift for looking beyond that first pane of glass. “She’s in the business of reading men – whether it’s a natural gift or she’s developed it through her profession,” Washington says. “Not to say she sees right through him, but she can see the pain, she can see the hurt.”

The first time of meeting him, she cracks his code,” says Moretz. “She looks him right in the eyes. She notices his OCD tics – turning his book a hundred times, moving his stuff around. But it’s incredibly charming to her, to see someone who cares so much about things, when everyone around her is just going through the motions.

Once she had the role, Moretz researched the character’s background. “There are girls who have been brought into rings from all over – from Russia, from Scandinavia,” she says. “I went to an amazing organization called Children of the Night – girls from all over America call a hotline number and they’re off the streets and in a home that cares for them. I didn’t want to exploit these girls – I’m an actor portraying a role – but as a girl, I wanted to understand. Meeting those girls not only helped me to be Teri truthfully and show who she is, but it allowed me, as a 16-year-old girl, to feel grateful and to put a spotlight on the organization.

Last year, Moretz starred as Carrie White in the remake of the cult classic “Carrie,” alongside Julianne Moore; and reprised her role as fan favorite Hit-Girl in “Kick Ass 2," the sequel to Matthew Vaughn’s cult-classic film, Kick-Ass.” Her breakout role as ‘Hit-Girl’ in “Kick-Ass,” followed by a starring role in Matt Reeves’ remake of “Let Me In,” landed her on TIME Magazine’s prestigious Top 10 Performances of the Year list, as well as, the New York Times Best Performances of 2010 list.
Moretz also starred with Sir Ben Kingsley in Martin Scorsese’s critically acclaimed “Hugo,” which garnered 11 Oscar nominations. This was followed by a leading role in Tim Burton’s “Dark Shadows,” alongside Johnny Depp and Michelle Pfeffier.

Opening across the Philippines in October 01, 2014, “The Equalizer” is distributed by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International.

Daniel Padilla apologizes to Kathryn Bernardo

Daniel Padilla asked forgiveness from on screen partner and special friend Kathryn Bernardo amid the audio clip scandal where the Kapamilya actor supposedly showed excitement over a text conversation with another girl whom netizens believe to be Jasmine Curtis.

Back to normal

“Alam naman natin na talagang nalungkot si Kathryn, dahil misunderstanding eh. Na-explain ko na lahat at naintindihan niya naman. Yung yakap na iyon (in Bench’s Naked Truth fashion show) ay talagang pagpapasalamat na pinatawad niya ako. Talagang kami ay back to normal kaya masayang-masaya ako,” Daniel said in an interview on “Aquino & Abunda Tonight” on Monday, September 22.

While Daniel did not single out those being dragged in the issue, he asked everyone to spare them and just put the blame on him. Jasmine’s boyfriend Sam Concepcion was also dragged into the controversy because netizens assumed the ‘Sam’ mentioned in the clip is him.

Friend’s fault

“Yung mga taong nasangkot, huwag na natin idamay kasi ako na mismo ang nahihiya. Doon lang ako nagkamali, lalaki ako eh. Kung may sisisihin dito, ako lang siguro iyon. Ako na lang po, huwag na yung iba,” Daniel said.

The Kapamilya teen actor admitted it was his friend who spread the audio clip online.

“Wala eh, ganoon talaga. We’re not that close, but (he's) still a friend. Nangyayari talaga.”

Daniel has learned his lessons and realized who his real friends are.

Jasmine Curtis’ story

“Nagpapasalamat na lang ako sa Diyos dahil binigyan niya ako ng ganitong klaseng problema, dahil natuto ka sa mga pagkakamali. Sobrang thankful na ang dami kong nakita na totoong tao sa akin, yung mga sumuporta.”

In a separate interview in “TV Patrol,” Jasmine admitted she and Daniel had a text conversation, where he asked the actress about her father’s health.

“He texted me to ask about my dad. All our conversations were about how my father was doing, kinamusta yung operation niya.”

Hands off

Jasmine, Daniel's co-star in the upcoming film, "Bonifacio," doesn’t want to assume she's the girl being talked about in the text conversation.

“I didn’t hear it properly. It was very muffled. Okay, people are thinking it was me, sige, kayo na lang bahala.”

Jasmine, who is getting bashed online over the issue, added she doesn’t want to meddle in Daniel and Kathryn’s relationship.

Daniel’s mother, Karla Estrada is reportedly planning to take legal action on the issue.

Derek Ramsay fights for his right as a dad

No one – not even the entertainment press -- can make TV5 actor-host Derek Ramsay say bad things about estranged wife Mary Christine Jolly, the mother of his 11-year-old son. That’s because the host of ‘The Amazing Race Philippines – Season 2’ has the boy's welfare on top of his mind.

“I want to be peaceful with her (Jolly) for the sake of my son,” Derek said.

Not that he will put up a front when he faces her again, after all the charges of physical and financial abuse she filed against him in court.

The best for son

It's just that Derek wants to see his son and give him the best, the way his parents did.

“I want to shoulder expenses for his education. That’s the best way to give back, to secure his future with a good education. That’s what my parents did to me. They sent me to the best schools they can afford.”

Derek wants a trust fund for his son. But even that has become a problem.

“Bakit kailangan sila ang may hawak ng pera, kung talagang ang bata ang interest nila?” he asks.

Derek recalls a touching moment with his son, whom he got to see only “four times in three years” since 2011.

‘We had fun’

“He called me Dad and we had fun.”

The actor also recalled having dinner with his son, his (Derek’s) parents and sister, and seeing the boy playing with his iPad for an hour .

That’s why Derek admitted he and his family were totally surprised after the boy said “Dad, I hate you” when they last saw each other in a closed-door meeting a few days ago at the Makati City Prosecutor's Office.

Derek refuses to say if the boy has been brainwashed.

“I strongly believe my son was not putting up an act when he was with me and we had fun.”

Introduction to family

The Kapatid artist added that he gets to talk to the boy only once a week. It was during one of those times that Derek introduced his son to his family.

“They’re blasting me (for that). Am I a bad father because I introduced him (his son) to my nephews and nieces? What’s wrong with that? They’re my family.”

Derek added that his affidavit said he has all the deposit slips, email and text messages from his estranged wife’s camp as pieces of evidence.

Very cooperative

He stresses that he has been ‘very cooperative’ when he found he has a son back in 2011.

“We (he and Jolly) sat down together to find out what’s best for my son. We did have a contract they drafted and notarized. I thought everything was smooth-sailing from there.”

He spoke too soon. Jolly has accused Derek of being remiss in his financial obligations to their son, and of allegedly violating Republic Act No. 9262, or the Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children Act.

“I don’t care how much she’s (Jolly) is asking for. What I’m saying is I let my affidavit speak for itself. Like in the past, pag babae ang kalaban, hindi ako nagsasalita.”

Ex-girlfriend’s support

As for charges of marital rape, Derek asked the press, “Do you believe I’m a rapist? Do you guys believe I do Ecstasy and drown her (Jolly) with Ecstasy to have sex with her? That I demand anal sex?”

He added that his ex-girlfriend, Colette Centeno, whom Jolly said he kicked out of the apartment so she  (Jolly) can move in, has given an affidavit to vouch for Derek's character as a boyfriend.

“It’s so easy to fill up a piece of paper saying this and that. It’s very hard to fill up a piece of paper with facts, evidence and witnesses. I hope we can settle this,” Derek relates.

Gabay Guro

TV5 executives and participants of “The Amazing Race Philippines (which airs Monday to Friday, 9 p.m starting Monday, October 6)” which Derek is hosting for the second time, noted that he never let personal problems affect his work.

The participants of The Amazing Race Season 2, which premieres October 6, 9 p.m. on TV5Derek says he draws strength from TV 5 and the support of the 11 pairs of race participants, who are aiming for the P2 million grand prize and a house and lot.

Meanwhile, Derek will join PLDT’s annual Gabay Guro grand gathering on Sunday, October 5 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena, where a brand-new house and lot and a vehicle will be given away to teachers.

Gabay Guro Chair Chaye Cabal-Revilla said they have partnered with Vista Land, Camella, AutoItalia, Honda Phils. Inc.  and PR Savings Bank for the event where Regine Velasquez, Pops Fernandez, Ryzza Mae Dizon and Alice Dixson will also attend.

Gabay Guro also holds teacher trainings and  donates computers to schools around the country.

Jane Oineza Launches Own BUM Statement Shirts

BUM Press Release

On Monday, September 22, BUM Equipment will unveil its launching of G.I. (Girl It’s) Jane collection named after one of its youth brand ambassador Jane Oineza, who is fresh from her successful third finish in a recently concluded Pinoy Big Brother All In Edition, a hit reality show of ABS-CBN Channel 2.

BUM’s move to provide Oineza with a collection named after her does not just spotlight the young star’s crowd-drawing potentials, but as an inspiration to the youth of today to be uniquely strong and brave amidst any criticism.

There are two categories for this particular collection - The Statement Shirts and the Skater Tops with Skirts.

Jane Oineza’s Statement Shirts

Once there was this quote that perfectly describes Jane, “It’s hard to be yourself in a world that wants you to be like them.” But when she was just one of the housemates, she was brave enough to hold onto what she strongly believed in. Thus, the statement shirts were born.

The statement shirts texts will read: ‘I am Misunderstood’, ‘I’m Real’, and ‘I am Stronger’, respectively and are all printed on black shirts. These speaks of Oineza’s transformation for the past months, which truly defines ‘who’ she is as an individual, as a young talented celebrity.

Oineza, being a youth brand ambassador is a reflection of a young woman who is brave enough to face all the critics and stay true to herself, no matter what.

This collection will be the first one to come out in the market on the said mentioned date and can be purchased at all BUM boutiques nationwide.

Jane’s Skater Tops and Skirts

Being a young lady, apart from being a celebri-TEEN, she prefers the preppy look. Jane is the ideal image who projects that aura of a ‘privileged’ lifestyle. She stays simple and fresh-looking with her choice of clothing combining it with the accessories without overpowering her real personality, that’s what she is.

As young lady who just blossomed after celebrating her 18th birthday inside the PBB House, Jane Oineza along with BUM, a thriving brand apparel is launching three variants of skater tops and skirts under the G.I. Jane collection as well.

Though black in theme, the Skater Skirts comes in three designs; black skull print, white skull print and diamond pattern print. While G.I. Jane skater tops are spandex long sleeves with accentuations to differ one tops from the other. These items can be bought in pairs or can be bought separately.

The said girly-themed collection will soon be available in November this year. Also, these will be exclusively available in all SM department stores.

Jane Thoughts on these Collections.

I am excited with the collection. And it truly is me. It spells out who I am on and off camera,” Jane shares.

The collections are something that any young lady would grab and own several pieces because of its message and the design. The G.I. Jane collections do not just reflect Jane’s personality but can be identifiable by any female growing up in the world of ‘peer pressures’ and stay committed to her ideals and do not conform to the standards dictated of the ‘world’ around her.

I do hope that even with the line of clothing via BUM, I can be a living testimony to girls out there to standout and not just be one of the many girls corrupted by any sort of ideals.”

To know more about BUM latest collection-- G.I. Jane, visit its social media accounts such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram via @officialbumph or visit its official website www.bumequipment.com.ph.
