A Dog’s Purpose Movie Review: Many Heartwarming Scenes And Sweet Sentiments That Will Certainly Melt The Hearts Of Dog Lovers

'A DOG'S PURPOSE' is based on the bestseller by W. Bruce Cameron and has four stories about a dog who gets reincarnated over a span of 50 years. It starts in the early 60s when a little boy in a Midwestern town rescues a golden retriever puppy from dehydration inside a truck and becomes his loyal pet. The boy is Ethan, played by Bryce Gheisar, and when he grows up to be a teenager, he is played KJ Apa.

The narrator is the dog himself, Bailey, voice by Josh Gad, the voice of Olaf in "Frozen" and who now plays Gaston's gay assistant in "Beauty and the Beast". Ethan becomes the star quarterback in his school's football team and Bailey acts as a bridge for him to get to know his girlfriend, Hannah (Britt Robertson). He's bound for a college football scholarship but an injury derails his dreams.

The episode ends with Bailey growing old and passing, to be reborn as a female German Shepherd named Ellie, who works with the K9 Division of the Chicago Police Department. She becomes the partner of a lonely cop, Carlos (John Ortiz), and dies tragically after rescuing a kidnapped girl. This is the episode that became controversial because the dog reportedly got so scared in doing that stunt where it jumps into the raging waters of a dam to save the girl.

The dog is then reincarnated as a Corgi named Tino, who provides company for a shy student, Mia (Kirby Baptiste), and becomes the matchmaker for her classmate, Al (Pooch Hall). After Tino, the dog returns as Buddy, a mix of Shepherd and St. Bernard who is maltreated, chained to a fence and was eventually dumped.

He then ends up full circle back into the life of the now quite old Ethan (now played by Dennis Quaid) and once again becomes the reason for Ethan to be reunited to his old flame, Hannah (now played by Peggy Lipton). This can be quite cheesy but somehow, it works, and Buddy is seen trying his best to prove to Ethan that he is actually his old friend Bailey who has never forgotten him, and this apparently, to be man's best friend, is a dog's purpose.

If you're a dog lover, especially if you loved previous movies about the strong bond between humans and dogs like "Marley and Me", "My Dog Skip", "Lassie" and "Max", then there's no doubt this movie is for you. But if you're more of a cat or a pig person, skip it. Here, a dog lover will shed tears several times as the dog dies not just once, but many times.

The movie is directed by Swedish filmmaker Lasse Hallstrom who first gained fame in the 80s with "My Life as a Dog" (which is not really a movie about dogs) and 2009's "Hachiko, A Dog's Tale". His acclaimed works include "What's Eating Gilbert Grape", "Chocolat" and "Cider House Rules", then he made some Nicholas Sparks mushy melodramas like "Dear John" and "Safe Haven", to which "A Dog's Purpose" is more aligned.

Josh Gad's voice work as the dog is quite competent as he is fully aware that the movie is seen through a dog's eyes who gives unconditional love to its owner. In fairness to most of the human actors, they also do well. There are many heartwarming scenes and sweet sentiments that will melt the hearts of dog lovers, especially those who are willing to believe that they can meet their old dog's soul in another dog down the line.

With The Jadine Love Team Losing Its Bright Glow, It's Said They Will Now Try To Cultivate Solo Careers

WONDER WHAT happened to the James Reid-Nadine Lustre love team. All of a sudden, their tandem suddenly seemed to have lost its erstwhile bright glow. There are now rumors that Viva, which is handling their careers, will separate them from each other for a while so they can try making it on their own solo careers.

This started when their last soap, "Till I Met You", didn't bring in the expected ratings of their first soap, "On the Wings of Love", which was really a big hit. It was really a wrong move to give that series a homosexual angle, which was more talked about than the love story between James and Nadine. There's talk that James will be paired with Liza Soberano but that's a lot of baloney since Liza's recent movie with Enrique Gil was just a big hit. There's also talk that Nadine will go sexy in future projects but can she stand on her own without James?

Another know it all says that love teams today seem to be on the way out and people will are looking for new tandems. We don't know about that but there are also those who say that the careers of James and Nadine lost its luster because of their own doing: they have both become difficult.

"Pareho silang nagkaroon ng masamang attitude," someone tells us. "They won't cooperate in their promo tours, lagi silang hindi available. Parang lumaki agad ang mga ulo so nakakaapekto yun negatively sa careers nila."

Although they don't have a new teleserye or movie coming up, James and Nadine will be doing a series of concert in the U.S.A. next month and this is where we'll see if they still have enough pulling power and magic with their fans. Well, here's hoping that their fans in America will still be very warm to them and make all their shows there big hits.

ABS-CBN might have been kicked out of Peru to be replaced by perennially low-rating kdramas while the GMA teleserye Cautiva/Hanggang Makita Kang Muli shot up in the Peruvian charts, but at least, it still had Kazakhstan. Since Forevermore became a hit in that country 2 years ago, teleseryes remained permanent telenovela fare.

This is cute. I could almost taste ABS-CBN sighing with relief. It nearly got kicked out into oblivion as Africa chose more GMA teleseryes & Indonesia pulled out after a few days of showing most of the ABS-CBN teleseryes it recently bought. ABS-CBN should show gratitude to the Kazakhs & reward them some free teleseryes. At least, that would guarantee it will always be shown there. Miracles are true, btw...

It should take a cue from the Koreans, they may languish in the bottom of the charts for nearly 15 years in a particular country but they still get to be shown because of miracles behind the scene.
