Friday the 13th Superstitions Probe on Hiwaga

Friday the 13th Superstitions Probe on Hiwaga

Broadcast journalist Atom Araullo investigates stories of misfortune that involve the number 13 this coming Friday the 13th in “Hiwaga.”

Fridays will never be the same for Kevin, who lost his job, his home, his money, and even the love of his life on this particular day.

And he’s not the only one who takes extra caution on Friday the 13th. Lolita did not only lose her mother on this day, but also her newborn baby after a mysterious white “engkantong aso” supposedly took it away.

Is it a coincidence or a curse? Can a number and a day influence how things come into play?

Don’t miss “Hiwaga” this Friday (September 15), 4:15 PM on ABS-CBN’s Kapamilya Gold.

Lovi Poe's "Akin Pa Rin ang Bukas" rated really well

WE’RE NOT surprised that Lovi Poe is grinning from ear to ear these days as the pilot week of her new primetime soap, “Akin Pa Rin ang Bukas”, rated really well. Starting Monday, she’ll appear in it every night.

Cherie Gil delivers an awesome performance in Sonata

CHERIE GIL delivers a truly awesome performance as the aging opera diva who has lost her zest for life in Peque Gallaga and Lore Reyes’ Sineng Pambansa entry, “Sonata”. The opening scene shows her as Regina, in front of an international audience, about to sing an aria, when she suddenly discovers that she has lost her voice. She doesn’t deliver a single line, but all her emotions are reflected on her face in that bravura scene where an irate audience boos her loudly.

The next scene takes us to Negros, where she has become a recluse in their old ancestral home. Her long time secretary, Cora (Chart Motus), arrives with her 10-year old son, Jonjon (Chino Jalandoni). She has separated from her husband in Manila and chooses to live a new life in her hometown. The story shows how friendship develops between Regina and Chino, and how the boy brings back hope and energy in the life of the despondent diva.

The role of Regina is a demanding acting piece and Cherie Gil is impressive from beginning to end. Best actress is written all over her awesome performance. We can’t help but shed tears in the touching scene where she stages an opera for the boy.
We don’t exactly agree with the ending, which deliberately tears our hearts to pieces, but we cannot fault the acting of Cherie and the new child actor who was recruited in Bacolod. The boy is a true charmer, with a very winning screen presence. He looks like Richard Gomez as a little boy and Richard himself is in the movie as the boyfriend of Cherie who’s married to someone else. The performance of the other members of the cast is also outstanding, with special mention of Joshua Pineda as Jonjon’s best friend.

The whole movie is indeed the directors’ loving tribute to their beloved Negros, so wonderfully photographed here by Mark Gary, with all the rustic scenes capturing the pastoral beauty of the place. If you love good music, you’ll enjoy the musical score that is filled with the classic pieces of Mozart, Puccini and other masters. This is definitely one of the year’s best films so don’t miss it at SM Cinemas as part of Sineng Pambansa.

John Lloyd Cruz vs. Jericho Rosales as the Next Award-Winning Comedy Actor

John Lloyd Cruz vs. Jericho Rosales as the Next Award-Winning Comedy Actor

Matinee idols and highly acclaimed actors John Lloyd Cruz and Jericho Rosales take their acting skills to different places starting this Saturday (September 14), as they take on two of ABS-CBN’s comedy shows, Goin’ Bulilit and Toda Max.

First up would be Jericho as he stars side-by-side with “Toda Max” cast members Angel Locsin, Vhong Navarro, and Ai-Ai delas Alas. In a different take on the popular kiligserye “Be Careful With My Heart”, Jericho will be playing a popular celebrity chef, often referred to as “Sir Chef”, who arrives in Beverly Gils to promote his cooking show, “Be Careful With My Cooking”. Lacking a chef assistant, he hires Justin (Vhong Navarro) to show off his cooking skills. However, when Justin joins Sir Chef behind the scenes, he discovers a secret that could ruin the celebrity chef’s career.

Meanwhile, as a light-hearted reminder to keep safe these days, Lloydie will be part of showing the funny things that could happen when it comes to relief centers and evacuation operations, while having fun with Philippine television’s favorite kids on the hit kiddie gag show “Goin’ Bulilit”. The kids will be delivering gags about the sticky situations that kids and adults can get themselves into—also serving as caution to keep away from harm. He will also be joining Aaliyah Belmoro in the segment “Mutyaya ng Masa” and Clarence Delgado in “How? How? With Islaw”.

In keeping with the current times, “Banana Split: Extra Scoop” also stays up to date this Saturday (September 14), as Melai Cantiveros has some things to say about her relationship and pregnancy. Aside from that, the cast will also be giving their take on the recently concluded Star Magic Ball, and Donya Bading (Jayson Gainza) will be taking on the role of Janet Napoles in the segment “Hot Issue”.

The hit teen series “LUV U” also taps into conflicts that should be resolved, as Marj (Mika dela Cruz) decides that her friends Lexie (Alexa Ilacad) and Shirley (Sharlene San Pedro) should also come to a truce with the boys of the Breakers, Benj (Nash Aguas), Drake (Jairus Aquino) and Archie (Kobi Vidanes). Will the long-running quarrel between the teens finally come to an end and will new relationships finally be formed?

Get loads of laughter with all these and more on ABS-CBN’s comedy shows starting on Saturday (September 14), with “Toda Max” airing back-to-back before “Banana Split: Extra Scoop” after “The Voice of the Philippines”. On Sunday (September 15), catch “Goin’ Bulilit” after “TV Patrol Weekend” and “LUV U” as it airs after “ASAP 18”.

Alex Medina Disappointed When He Didn't Win As Best Actor In Cinemalaya For 'Babagwa'

ALEX MEDINA admits he somehow felt bad when he didn’t win as Cinemalaya best actor in the New Wave category for “Babagwa” since everyone says his performance as an internet scammer who falls for one of his victims was very effective. Now, the movie, which was the biggest box office hit in Cinemalaya last July, is about to get a wide theatrical release on September 18. It’s also being shown in competition in three international film festivals this coming October: Vancouver Filmfest in Canada, Warsaw Filmfest in Poland and Hawaii International Filmfest.

Representing the film in all these festivals is its writer-director, Jason Paul Laxamana. “One person lang kasi ang allowed na may free plane fare and accommodation in all these festivals kaya wala akong kasama kahit isang cast member,” he says.

Going back to Alex, he should not despair that he lost as Cinemalaya best actor as we’re sure he’ll be nominated again as best actor in other award-giving bodies next year. Two of his main rivals will be his own brothers, Ping Medina, who also excelled in “Transit”, and their eldest brother, Karl Medina, who stars in “The Guerilla Is a Poet”, the story of Joma Sison that’s part of the Cine Filipino Filmfest that also opens on September 18. After “Babagwa”, Alex will next be seen in the Cinema One filmfest entry, “Angustia”, where he plays a priest in Bicol who slowly loses his sanity, written and directed by new director Christian Cordero, a Palanca award-winner.

Lauren Young On Why Sister Megan & Mikael Daez Won't Admit They're On: 'Bahala Sila'

LAUREN YOUNG obviously impressed GMA management with her fine performance in “Mundo Mo’y Akin”, her first show as a Kapuso after she moved from ABS-CBN. Right after it ended last week, here she is now cast in two new shows. She plays the lead in the new Sunday afternoon youth-oriented show, “Dormitoryo”, that starts airing on September 22. Then she also plays Lorna Tolentino’s daughter in the new primetime soap, “Genesis”, starring Dingdong Dantes who’ll now be proclaimed as the Primetime King.

“I’m really so happy with the way my career is going here in GMA,” she says. “It’s great to be in a different kind of youth show like ‘Dormitoryo’ kasi hindi ito yung usual pa-cute love story but a suspense-thriller. Kakaiba siya talaga kaya sana, ma-accept ng viewers. I play Hazel, an incoming freshman in Branwood College. Mapapatira ako sa dorm called Holy Spirit Manor. Doon, I will feel the presence of a girl who just died, si Wyn Marquez, who’s asking for help para malaman kung sino ang pumatay sa kanya. Kasama namin sa dorm sina Annicka Dolonius, Mayton Eugenio and Ash Nordstrom, with Enzo Pineda and Ruru Madrid as the leading men. Every Sunday, may mare-reveal na secret among the characters. Lahat kasi kami, may lihim. Kami mismo, nae-excite kasi we don’t know how the story will go. Hindi nire-reveal sa’min ng writer-director ng show, si Jun Lana.”

How’s her sister Megan doing in Indonesia as she competes in Miss World? “She’s having a lot of fun. She updates us, like ngayon, they just moved to a new hotel. At meron pa rin daw swimsuit competition, for one-piece lang, hindi bikini, tapos naka-sarong sila. Our whole family will go there on September 27 to support in time for the coronation night on September 28.”

Will Mikael Daez be with them? “I think mauuna siya roon.” How come both Megan and Mikael keep on denying their relationship when it’s obvious they’re on? “Ay, ewan ko sa kanila. Bahala sila doon. Basta help us pray na lang for Megan to win the Miss World title on September 28.”

Lauren is also lucky that GMA allowed her to do a movie for TV5’s CineFilipino filmfest that opens on September 18. She’s in the psychological thriller, “Puti”, written and directed by Mike Alcazaren. “I play the nurse of Ian Veneracion’s son na naaksidente. That’s all I can reveal as there’s a surprise in my character sa ending.”

pinagbibidahan nina Angel Locsin, Vhong Navarro, at Ai-Ai delas Alas.
show niyang "Be Careful With My Cooking".

How? With Islaw" kasama si
Clarence Delgado.

sina Benj (Nash Aguas), Drake (Jairus Aquino) at Archie (Kobi
Vidanes).
