At The Special Screening Of Mike De Leon's 'Hindi Nahahati Ang Langit' Restored By ABS-CBN Archives, Only Dina Bonnevie Showed Up Among Its Stars

WE WERE INVITED to the special screening of the digitally restored version of “Hindi Nahahati ang Langit”, part of the ongoing Cinema One Originals Filmfest at Trinoma. Directed in 1985 by the reclusive Mike de Leon, this is based on a komiks story by Nerissa Cabral and scripted by Mia Concio. This is the love story of Noel (played by Marco Polo Garcia as a boy and Christopher de Leon as a grown up) and Melody (played by Jennifer Sevilla as a girl and Lorna Tolentino as a grownup.)

Noel is the son of the late Nestor de Villa as Ariston and Melody is the daughter of Gloria de Villa as Agnes. As kids, they’re always fighting with each other. When they grew up, Boyet marries Dina Bonnevie while Lorna marries Edu Manzano, with disastrous results. You’ll know they’ll still end up with each other but Mike de Leon is a trendsetter even then. He chose not to give the movie a happy ending.

The movie is very well acted and remains to be interesting viewing even after all these years. Lorna and Dina are both so beautiful in the movie (without retoke which is so common these days), while Christopher and Edu are at their most dashing. Writers with whom we saw the movie opine that no one among our younger actors now can hold a candle to Boyet de Leon during his prime in the 80s in terms of good looks and acting ability.
