TAPE CEO: Eat Bulaga! Indonesia leads ratings charts

Television and Production Exponents, Inc. (TAPE), TAPE Inc., President and CEO Tony Tuviera has more good news for Filipino viewers.

Months after it debuted in Indonesia, the TV show “Eat Bulaga!”, which his company is producing, is rating well in the said country.

“Right now, yung “Eat Bulaga! Indonesia” is number one already in Indonesia. Pati yung kanyang primetime show sa SCTV sa Indonesia ay tinalo na nung “Eat Bulaga! Indonesia,” Tuviera said in “24 Oras” on Friday, October 12.

The Indonesian franchise has the same segments as the local version, such as “Bolagaan,” “Karaoke Stud,” “Indonesia Pintar” (Pinoy Henyo), and “Juan For All, All For Juan.”

“May tumawag sa amin at tinanong kung puwede daw kaming umupo (for a meeting), dahil interesado daw yung Indonesia. So, nagpunta sila dito at umupo kami at pinag-usapan namin,” Tony recalled how the franchise came about.

He added that similarities between Filipinos and Indonesians account for the success of “Eat Bulaga!” abroad.

Brand of humor

“Filipinos and Indonesians’ brand of humor are similar. That is why the Indonesian version offered exactly the same segments which made EB popular in the Philippines. Just like our show here, the Indonesian version is filled with fun, entertainment, and inspiration—which are universal themes,” he told Yahoo! OMG! Philippines.

Tuviera also hopes to get a nod from Malaysia since the first franchise in Indonesia is doing well.

“Sinabi sa amin ng Indonesia na kung ano man ang nangyayari sa Indonesia, parati ang Malaysia ay nakabantay. Kaya siguro, nagdadasal kami talaga ngayon na sana sumunod ang Malaysia,” Tuviera added.

He promised to careful study proposals for franchising the show in other countries.

If that would mean EB becoming the Philippine ambassador for TV entertainment, why not?” he added.

TAPE recently received the Galing Pinoy Franchise excellence award from the Association of Filipino Franchisers, Inc. for successfully franchising the first Filipino TV show.

Young JV sticks to original music

While he admits remakes and cover songs do well in the charts, R&B artist Young JV would rather stick to making original music.

He wants to set an example for fellow OPM artists who he feels have so much singing and songwriting talent.

“Masyado nang maraming covers, remakes, paulit-ulit. Yung point ko sa mga OPM artists is let’s do music kasi ang daming talented singers, sayang,” he said at the press launch of his sophomore album “Doin’ It Big” on Friday, October 12.

Young JV, who produces his own songs, says it takes him two to three  weeks to come up with an original composition. He added that he feels so confident with his songwriting and production team, he opted to stay away from  remakes.

“Kaya hindi ako nag-hesitate na kahit walang covers. They (his songwriting and production team) give me tips kung ano yung okay for the people, most especially sa mga masa.”

K-pop’s popularity

He thinks that  K-pop is so popular worldwide because it is  original and the artists go out of their way to make music videos.

“Yung mga Korean groups, seven years ago, wala pa sila. Pero ngayon they’re the big deal.”

Young JV has not yet uploaded any of his songs and performances on YouTube, but he will, one day.

“I’ve been thinking about putting more songs sa YouTube. Pero minsan I don’t have time, tinatamad na rin ako because I get tired sa taping. But I like the idea, having millions of hits sa YouTube. Gusto ko ring gawin yon. Kasi most of the youth ngayon sa Internet na eh.”

Compared to his hip-hop heavy first album, Young JV’s ten-track “Doin’ It Big” CD blends pop, R&B and hip-hop.

“The good thing about my album is that it’s still me with a little bit of what I can cater to. Pinaghirapan ko yung second album. Very different from the first. Sigiro maraming masha-shock sa second album ko kasi it’s far from me. I have all out singing na, may acoustics with Yeng Constantino and Karylle.”

His carrier single “Your Name” features Pinoy Big Brother Teen Edition 4 big winner Myrtle Sarrosa, who he insists is a friend, even if fans want them to become an item.

Young JV dreams of collaborating with Gary Valenciano, Sarah Geronimo and Billy Crawford someday.
