Eugene Domingo Admits She's A Rough Diamond Compared To Maricel Soriano As Diamond Star

WHEN MARICEL Soriano and Eugene Domingo first worked together in Regal’s “Bahay Kubo”, Maria won as best actress and Eugene, best supporting actress in the 2007 Metro Filmfest. Since then, Uge has become a lead actress herself and they’re now on equal footing as the warring mamas in “Momzillas” that opens on September 18. In the trailer, Maria is billed as the Diamond Star while Uge is tagged as the Rough Diamond Star. How does Uge feel about this?

“Talaga namang rough lang ako compared sa isang Maricel Soriano,” she says. “Pipinuhin pa ako. Sa dami ng pinagdaanan niyang intriga at pagsubok sa buhay, she deserves the title Diamond Star kasi matibay at matatag talaga siya, hindi siya natutumba.” She then turns to Maria and says: “Pahingi ng alahas, ha.”

How’s it working with Maria now? “Sobrang daldal niya. Kahit inaantok na ko kung minsan, talk show pa rin siya ng talk show. Sabi ko, wala sigurong kausap sa bahay. But I won’t change that kasi nakakaaliw naman ang pagiging madaldal niya. Para siyang radio. Sa pagiging artista naman, gustung-gusto ko ‘yung malasakit niya’t pagiging sensitive sa co-actors niya. ‘Yung respeto, hindi nawawala sa kanya ‘yung respeto big star ka man o bit player. Pati sa mga bata, kina Andi Eigenmann at Billy Crawford, may respeto siya. She keeps quiet, for them to be able to concentrate.”

Biotech King Dethroned and Convicted to Fraud

Biotech King Dethroned and Convicted to Fraud

David Blech, the former biotech king was dethroned and jailed due to securities fraud.
Blech, who even made it to the list of Forbes 400 wealthiest Americans on 1990, was the initial financial force behind the industry giant Celgene, the rare disease specialist Alexion Pharmaceuticals, and the cancer drug developer Ariad Pharmaceuticals, not to mention Icos, which developed the impotence pill Cialis.
Now, however, he is about to begin a four-year prison term, is about $11 million in debt and is mainly an afterthought to the industry he helped foster.
He squandered his fortune with reckless borrowing and stock trading in a quest for even greater riches. His Wall Street firm, D. Blech & Co., collapsed - dragging biotech share prices down with it - in 1994, on a day some called “Blech Thursday.” Comeback attempts have only gotten him deeper into trouble.
Blech is scheduled to report September 18 to federal prison in Fort Dix, N.J., having pleaded guilty to manipulating the stock of two biotech companies as part of his latest comeback attempt. He also pleaded guilty to securities fraud in 1998, but avoided prison.

Award-Winning Character Actress Ruby Ruiz Now In Toronto Filmfest Ro Represent 'Ekstra'

AFTER WINNING as best supporting actress in Cinemalaya New Wave Category for her performance as a talent coordinator for extras in “Ekstra, the Bit Player”, character actress Ruby Ruiz will next be seen in two new Joel Lamangan movies, “Burgos” and “Lihis”. She plays a woman whose son is also abducted just like Lorna Tolentino’s son in “Burgos”, but she’s antagonistic to Lorna because Lorna’s missing son, Jonas, is getting more media attention. In “Lihis”, she plays the grieving mother of an activist, Chanel La Torre, who is killed by assassins.

Ruby started as a theatre actress with PETA thirty years ago. She was worked with great directors like Lino Brocka and Ishmael Bernal, both national artists. “Ekstra” is her biggest break and it’s the first time she won an acting award so she’s very thankful to Director Jeffrey Jeturian for casting her in it. She also treasures the experience of being able to work with Gov. Vilma Santos. “Napakabait niya,” she says. “First time ko rin to work with her kaya tuwang-tuwa ako. But in one scene namin, nawala ako nang titigan niya ako. Supposed to be inuutangan niya ako, but I forgot yung lines ko. Na-starstruck ako’t di ko maalala. So sabi ko, Gov, huwag mo naman akong titigan sa mata. Nawawala ako. Tawa nang tawa sa’kin si Direk Jeffrey. Sinabihan ako na huwag akong mahiya sa kanya at basta iarte ko nang tama yung eksena. Inakbayan pa niya ko. Nakakatuwa talaga siyang katrabaho.”

Ruby will be joining Director Jeffrey Jeturian as representatives of “Ekstra” that is an official entry in the Toronto International Filmfest this coming week. They left yesterday. “Nagpapasalamat ako’t isinama nila ako sa delegation natin. First time ko to attend an international filmfest kaya excited ako. Sayang nga hindi puede si Gov. Vi dahil busy siya sa Batangas. Mas maganda sana kung kasama rin siya.”

Harrison Ford versus Gary Oldman in “Paranoia”

Harrison Ford versus Gary Oldman in “Paranoia”

To take on the roles of battling billionnaire kingpins in Relativity Media's new thriller “Paranoia”, the filmmakers knew they would need two actors capable of embodying brilliant, eccentric, hugely ambitious men whose unbridled thirst for power has made them capable of menace and even murder. They found that in the explosive pairing of Academy Award® nominated actors Gary Oldman and Harrison Ford.
The two first worked together on the hit thriller “Air Force One,” with Ford playing the U.S. President and Oldman the relentless Russian terrorist who hijacks his plane. In “Paranoia,” however, they would both be challenged by characters unlike any they have taken on in their diverse careers – men who once wanted to change the world with life-altering technology but have fallen into an obsessive, cat-and-mouse game to one-up each other.
“It was like a dream to put these two back together again,” muses producer Alexandra Milchan. “Their characters couldn’t be more different and yet Harrison and Gary are alike in many ways. They are both equally funny, charming, extremely smart and generous. They both really loved the characters they were playing, even though they are villains, and they both understood the source of their greed and their desire to play God with the universe around them to a certain degree.”
“Harrison walks, talks, and feels like integrity personified – the very ideal of an upstanding American leader like his character, Jock Goddard – which makes his turn to the dark side in `Paranoia' so compelling,” notes producer William Johnson. “It was equal parts pleasure and terror to watch him seduce and destroy.”

Oldman was drawn right away to the screenplay. “It plays like a thriller, but it’s got a twist that I didn’t see coming,” Oldman notes. More than that, Oldman quickly developed his own personal take on his character, Nicolas Wyatt, as one of the self-made industrialists of the digital era. “I play Nick as a guy who is working-class, self-taught, and a former whiz kid who has a real flair for technology,” he explains. “The character was originally an American but I presented to Robert a trans-Atlantic ex-pat who has found success here. It adds an interesting dynamic to things.”
Wyatt has indeed found success in America, the kind of head-spinning success only the very elite will ever taste, which was a lot of fun for Oldman to jump into. “I said to Robert at one point, ‘you’ve fulfilled all my dreams of driving a Bentley, wearing wonderful suits and stepping out of my own private helicopter,’” Oldman muses.
Oldman was especially thrilled to create the explosive collision between Wyatt and Goddard with Harrison Ford – and he says that Ford took him by surprise. “I was really impressed,” he says. “It’s kind of a different character for him and he did some really fine work.”
Says Ford in turn of Oldman: “I’ve always enjoyed watching Gary no matter what he is doing. Wyatt is a fascinating, bitter, angry character, who believes my character, Goddard, would never be the success he is without him. Working with him made the whole thing great fun.”
Ford was drawn not only to reuniting with Oldman but to the rich themes of “Paranoia.” “I see it as a cautionary tale of a young man led by blind ambition into a trap,” he says.
The filmmakers gave Goddard and Wyatt contrasting, individual styles, right down to their cars. But the real sparks emerged from whenever Oldman and Ford were on set together. “What was interesting to me is that both these great actors are quite unassuming and gentle when you meet them,” observes Luketic. “But as soon as the word action is called they turned into these incredible forces.”
Opening across the Philippines on October 2, “Paranoia” is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International through Columbia Pictures.

“The Conjuring” Director James Wan Returns with “Insidious: Chapter 2”

“The Conjuring” Director James Wan Returns with “Insidious: Chapter 2”

Australian director James Wan is one of the most intelligent and creative filmmakers working today. He recently conqured global box-office with the blockbuster supernatural thriller “The Conjuring” which is based on the story of husband-and-wife psychic investigators who come across a horrific case involving the hauntings of a Rhode Island farmhouse.
Previously, Wan co-created the “Saw” franchise, the most successful horror-film series of all time.
Now, the newly crowned master of horror brings to the screen the terrifying thriller “Insidious: Chapter 2,” the sequel to the disturbing and original 2011 psychological horror thriller “Insidious.”
In “Chapter 2,” a haunted family struggles to uncover a terrifying secret that has left them dangerously connected to the spirit world. The sequel reteams the cast of the first film, including Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, Barbara Hershey, Lin Shaye and Ty Simpkins.
“We’re super excited at the chance to continue telling the story we started in the first film,” says Wan. “I love the characters we created in the first film, and it’s great to come back to work with the same cast and crew. It’s like coming home to a family. But it’s also very scary because the success of the first film took us all by surprise.”
“The first film had a single vision - James and screenwriter Leigh Whannell’s - pushing it forward without any kind of interference or creative compromises,” producer Jason Blum says. “I believe that’s one reason the film did so well, so we didn’t want James or Leigh to make any creative compromises with the sequel either.”
The filmmaking duo, whose creative partnership goes back to their college days in Melbourne, Australia, say their inspiration has always come from trading ghost stories with one another. Even during the filming process, they constantly bounce around ideas and concepts that they then incorporate into the film.
“If you have enough similarities, or if the same stories excite you, then it’s really easy to work together,” says Whannell. “James and I are pretty in sync that way, especially when it comes to horror.”
Or as Wan puts it: “We’ve always tried to scare the crap out of each other. And then one day we said, ‘We should put this in a movie!’ And that’s literally what we did for `Insidious.' We took all the scares, all the great ghost stories we’d heard, and put them in the film.”
The film hit a nerve, connecting with audiences domestically and abroad.
The filmmaking duo sees “Insidious: Chapter 2” as more of a psychological thriller than a horror film. While “Insidious” was infused with haunted-house-film archetypes, Wan says “Chapter 2” focuses less on gore and CGI effects than on tapping into audiences’ most basic childhood fears.
“I would describe it as a domestic thriller with a supernatural edge to it,” Wan says. “The ghouls are coming back, but this film isn’t about that as much. I feel like I’ve already established the characters, so now I can get into them without being too gimmicky, while still keeping those elements that people love. The first one was a lot more straightforward, which is great for a first movie, but in a sequel you want to expand on the mythology. You want to show people more of the world you’ve created, and that’s what we did with Chapter 2.”
Opening across the Philippines on September 18, “Insidious: Chapter 2” is distributed by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International. Visit www.columbiapictures.com.ph to see the latest trailers, get free downloads and play free movie games.
