Benedict Cumberbatch Unleashes The Hero Within in DOCTOR STRANGE

British actor and Oscar-nominee Benedict Cumberbatch plays the titular character in Marvel Studios' new action-adventure "Doctor Strange."

Dr. Stephen Strange was once a celebrated but arrogant surgeon, until a tragic accident cost him his medical skills and career. Searching for a way to restore his talents, he traveled the world until he finally encountered The Ancient One, the enigmatic teacher who offered to teach him the ways of the Mystic Arts.

Commenting on casting Cumberbatch for the role, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige says, "You need a spectacular actor. And the fact that Benedict Cumberbatch agreed to do this role and is as excited and as enthusiastic as any actor that has ever joined our universe is huge to us. He's great. He was somebody who was a prototype for us and this character for many years as we were developing it."

Director Scott Derrickson adds, "There's a quality about him as an actor that just isn't like anyone else. He has a ferocity of intelligence combined with tremendous depth of feeling, and that's not something you encounter very often."

Explaining how he was drawn to the role, Cumberbatch says, "I found Stephen Strange to be incredibly arrogant, brilliant and sort of extraordinary. He is utterly broken down to be reconstituted into the Super Hero that becomes fully fledged by the end of the movie. And there's a lot of humor on the way. There's a lot of action, a lot of drama. All those elements really appeal to me as an actor. So it was mainly the character arc and the journey he goes on in the film that drew me to the material."

"Doctor Strange" as a comic book was born in the 1960s, and besides being a reflection of the mind-expanding time period, has a blend of western science and eastern mysticism that Cumberbatch as a teenager was very interested in. "I spent some time teaching in a Buddhist monastery near Darjeeling," the actor relates, "and read things like Fritjof Capra's 'The Tao of Physics' and 'Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance' by Robert Pirsig, as well as studying Buddhists texts and reading up on certain scientific books about cosmology. I got to observe extraordinary ancient ritual and wisdom right in front of me every morning and every evening. My mind as a 19-year-old was really blown open by all of that. So this material immediately made sense to me."

Offering insight into Strange's personality, Cumberbatch says, "He does seem arrogant to the point of being unlikable but yet, somehow, you still like him. He's got a great deal of charm. There is a sense of loss or soullessness about him very early on in the film. You see him as a lone figure at the beginning and end of this film. But by the end of the film he's a Super Hero, and we all know that's quite an onerous task and often quite a solitary existence. Not too many people can form meaningful relationships when your responsibilities are always others and elsewhere."

Cumberbatch adds, "Stephen Strange suffers so much during the film, not just physically but psychologically. You can put yourself in his place. And that's the key to being able to empathize with the character. But ultimately his realization that he has a mission beyond his own self is the true turning point for people to lean in and sympathize with him and to understand that this moment, and what becomes of it, is what he's journeyed through all that suffering for. What's bold about his origin story is that you get someone built up from ground zero, and this is truly who he was before and after."

"Doctor Strange" is based on the Marvel comic character who first appeared in "Strange Tales" Issue #110 published in July 1963. Marvel's "Doctor Strange" continues the lineage of epic big-screen adventures chronicled in Marvel's "Iron Man," "The Incredible Hulk," "Iron Man 2," "Thor," "Captain America: The First Avenger," "The Avengers," "Iron Man 3," "Thor: The Dark World," "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," "Guardians of the Galaxy," "Avengers: Age of Ultron," "Ant-Man," "Captain America: Civil War," and the upcoming "Guardians of the Galaxy 2" (April 26, 2017) and "Thor: Ragnarok" (November 3, 2017).

Explore the mystical world of "Doctor Strange" when it hits Philippine theaters October 26! Marvel's "Doctor Strange" is distributed in the Philippines by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures through Columbia Pictures. #DoctorStrangePH, #OpenYourMind

Move Over JaDine, Here Comes RYLEBIE the Newest Team Real

Original content appeared on: ThePulse.ph

In an industry already filled with starry-eyed love teams, these two teens definitely standout because of their genuine spark and sweetness that make their fans crave for more.
"Aminin mo crush mo ako noon!" Actress Barbie Imperial playfully teases heronscreen partner Ryle Paolo Tan. Unable to hide his true emotions, Ryle sheepishly admits to Inside Showbiz Weekly, "Yeah, yeah. Crush ko siya dati. Aminado naman ako," he laughs.
The coo-some twosome, both 18 years old, are two of Folded & Hung's newest ambassadors, and they're giving fans a hefty dose of kilig as the up-and-coming love team on TV, "RyleBie." A boy from the dance troupe, #Hashtags, and the girl from the all-female group, GirlTrends, this duo is undeniably a match made in showbiz heaven. Since July, they've been adding some much needed fun, youth and kilig on the highly popular noon-time show,It's Showtime.
For Folded & Hung, they join the likes of other rising stars: JC Santos, Klea Pineda, Jak Roberto, Laura Lehmann, Mark Rivera, Jennica Sanchez, Lharby Policarpio, Karen Reyes, Kenzo Gutierrez, Julian Aurine Flores, Vince Vandorpe,  and Lauren Reid, who are putting a fresh take on the beloved brand's Holiday 2016 Collection.

ON THE PATH TO STARDOM
The young beauty, Barbie, was first lured by showbiz when she joined Pinoy Big Brother 737 in 2015. "Actually, 'di dapat ako sasali ng PBB," she reveals with a laugh. "Sinama lang ako ng mga friends ko kahit hindi ako interesado, pero ako pa 'yung nakapasok!" It was an unexpected blessing, and though she was painfully shy, she knew that this was an opportunity that should not go to waste.
However, her stint on the show was short-lived. She was the first to be evicted after two weeks. Her airtime on the show left a lasting impression on the audience, and this helped pave the way for her other stints in showbiz. While Barbie is a new face in showbiz, Ryle Paolo Tan is a child with showbiz lineage. His mother, Sherilyn Reyes, is a seasoned actress most noted for her roles in Pangako… Ikaw Lang. His biological father, Junjun Santiago, hails from the renowned showbiz clan of Santiagos. "When I was growing up 'di ko namalayan na my mom was a famous star. I just knew na I came from showbiz clans, but I didn't know na sikat sila. Parang dedma lang ako," he laughs. Paolo admits that when he was young, he  was naturally drawn to dancing and performing. "Though I'm really into artistic things, I was never really that interested to join showbiz until one time I saw na pinagkakaguluhan sila Kim Chiu. I thought, I wanna try that." When Mariole Alberto, one of ABS-CBN executives, asked Ryle if he was interested to test his acting chops on the small screen and the stage, the young lad didn't hesitate. "Let's do it!" While Ryle has been in showbiz for about three years and Barbie for a little only over a year, their paths had only finally crossed in July 2016.

THEIR STARS ALIGN
"'Shocks, ang ganda niya!' 'Yun 'yung unang inisip ko when I first saw her," Ryle beams, with the memory of their first encounter fresh in his mind. "Hanggang ngayon kapag tinitignan ko siya, palagi ko sinasabi na ang ganda ganda niya talaga. Always. I don't forget to remind her every time. 'Di ako takot sabihin sa kanya."
As Barbie blushes at his unabashed admiration, Ryle shares how they first met: "Pinicturan kami ng Mom (ni Barbie) tapos she sent the photo sa isang fan ni Barbie. From then on, it spread like wildfire at kaya kami naging RyleBie," he shares. "I also answered an anonymous question posted online about sinong PBB housemate gusto ko ma-meet, and sinagot ko, Barbie. I shared it on Twitter, and pinagkaguluhan, until lumaki nang lumaki. Eventually, we followed each other on Twitter," he recalls with a smile. But even before that, Barbie already had a crush on the talented performer when he became a guest on a show with his mom and siblings in 2014.
He was then known as just Paolo Tan, but his boyish charm and handsome face was forever ingrained in her memory. "When we met in September 15, for the launch of Stellar, I thought 'Uy, kailangan ko magpapogi kay Barbie.' And I was so happy kasi kung paano ko siya ni-imagine, ganun din siya in person," he reveals.
As destiny would have it, the two were paired and they became extremely close. "What I admire most about Barbie is that she has a way of showing people how much they mean to her. She makes them feel special and worthy of her time," he shares. Barbie jumps in to add, "Gusto ko lang kasi ipakita kung gaano sila ka-important sa akin, kahit hindi nila ibalik sa akin. Iniisip ko kasi kapag 'di ko pinakita, pagsisisihan ko. Kaya ipakita mo kahit hindi maibalik yung love…at least pinaramdam mo sa kanila." Like with her friends and family, she takes great care in showing Ryle how much he means to her.
When it comes to reciprocating the compliment,Barbie shares this about her onscreen beau: "(What I admire most about him is) sobrang tiyaga niya sa mga tao, especially sa akin. Sobrang tapang ko magsalita minsan, pati actions ko. Si Ryle ay isa sa mga tao na naging reason kung bakit nagiging soft ako," she confessed.
"On the other hand, what annoys me about him is he's overly competitive and hindi siya mabilis mag-forgive. Also, minsan masyadong flirt and mayabang," Barbies teases.
Ryle immediately comes to his defense, "I'm close with everyone kasi and even girls. Some people think I'm malandi but in truth, friendly lang ako with everyone. If someone needs a ride and it's on my way naman, I offer them a ride." Barbie explains, "Actually, when you get to know Ryle, parang akala mo mayabang and sobrang competitive. Pero 'yung totoo, Ryle is sobrang bait and sobrang sweet. 'Di mo akalain, she laughs.
"When it comes to me being mayabang, my dad gives off the same aura," he begins to explain. "I got that from him. Parang sa kanya, you enter a place always with presence. But when you start talking, you become one of the warmest people to talk to. You come in mapapansin ka."

THE POSSIBILITY OF LOVE
Their chemistry onscreen is sweet and innocent, like the beginnings of young love in Spring. But is puppy love really on their minds? While there is definitely a spark of attraction, and both consider each other their best friends, the two clarify that, "We're not a couple." Ryle quickly adds, "But there's a great chance that I will pursue her (in the future). When the time is right, I will pursue her. Ako alam ko, kaya kong maghintay. I don't have to entertain anyone else. I'm a lone wolf, 'di ako mabarkada and I'm happy to be with just one person."
There's no need to rush when it comes to love they both admit. And Barbie, who just turned 18, shares that there are other priorities in their life at the moment. "I'd like to enjoy what we have right now, which is a really great friendship. Oo, may pag-asa kami maging kami in the future kasi parang wala na akong makikita na ibang guys na katulad niya. Parang sobrang swerte ka sa isang Ryle Tan," she says. While other young, less mature hearts would jump at the chance, these two are taking it slow and are not pressured by the fans who are watching their so-called "romance" with bated breath.
"Ako, I don't feel the pressure na maging kami.Ayoko naman pilitin ang hindi talaga. Pero if kami magkatuluyan in the future, why not? Matagal na kami magkasama at magkakilala. We respect each other,'di na namin kailangan mag-adjust. If ever, the only thing that we will need by that time is the label," he confesses. But the fans are insistent and persistent. "Does that make it hard to work with someone whom you admire on a different level?" asks Inside Showbiz. Ryle answers, "No naman."
"I guess, I understand the infatuation with love teams and romance… it's because ang daming fans who are yearning for love. Everybody wants to be loved. It's the number one thing that they want. So watching people fall in love onscreen, they think 'Ay, sana ako din ganyan. Ang ganda ng hugot lines. Magamit nga 'yan in real life.' Everybody wants romance. So if they have not yet found love in their real lives, it's understandable why they project that kilig onto their loveteams," he shares.
Barbie shares her own insight on the matter, "(People as obsessed with loveteams because) masarap 'yung feeling na kinikilig ka kahit wala kang lovelife. Papanuorin mo lang 'yung loveteam, sobrang kinikilig ka na. It may all just be fantasy, but it feels good to indulge in that daydream."

FAVORITE LOVE TEAM
For the rising RyleBie, they themselves have their own favorite loveteams, which is KathNiel (for Ryle) and JaDine (for Barbie). "Minsan inaaway pa nga niya ako kapag usapang KathNiel vs. JaDine!" he jests. Barbie gives him a nudge.
When it comes to being a successful loveteam themselves, Ryle shares, "In all honesty, I want to be as big as them, pero you just have to accept that no one will reach that. They're one of a kind talaga. Daniel is different. Sobrang ganda nung mga na-contribute nila sa showbiz. Lahat ng teleserye and movies nila, wala akong na-miss kahit isa." As an avid fan of James Reid and Nadine Lustre, Barbie reveals that she's been a supporter of Team JaDine from the first time she saw them at a mall show promoting Diary ng Panget in Legazpi, where she's from.
Reaching the status and star power of the phenomenal teams may seem like a far-off dream, but RyleBie is hopeful. "For us as a love team, I think we have what it takes. We're unique. There's real element of closeness. We care for each other, and as bestfriends, we know what makes each other tick. Kung mabibigyan kami ng break, we know how to play around with the audience," shares Ryle.
Though both legally adults and of age, are the two exploring more dramatic and more romantic roles that may entail kissing scenes? Barbie is shy to answer, but Ryle is firm in his response. "Ako, okay sa akin. And pumayag naman lahat except my dad. Pero gusto ko if I'm going to have my first kiss with Barbie, ayoko naman on cam. Syempre if ever mag-seseryosohan kami in the future, dapat sacred 'yun," he reveals with a little protectiveness. For now, their love lives may need to take a back seat as both are focused on honing their craft and advancing their careers.

CAREERS BEFORE LOVE
When it comes to priorities today, both agree that time and energy should be spent on improving their craft. "For me it's not about the money. Syempre it's a need, but performance comes first. If I need to perform for free, okay lang. I will still give my 100%. I don't wanna go half heartedly. That's how I got into the biz. Performing arts, singing, acting," says Ryle.Though naturally shy, Barbie is slowly coming out of her shell and blooming into a talented actress. "Acting talaga 'yung gusto ko. Swerte lang din ako kahit ako 'yung unang na-evict sa PBB, I was still blessed witha career. 'Di ko akalain na nandito pa rin ako." Though showbiz may not have been her first choice, Barbie is adamant to make it her lifelong career.

BEATING DOWN THE BASHERS
Of course, as RyleBie makes their way to the top, rivalling others who too are trying to make their mark, it's not surprising that RyleBie has received criticisms from their bashers. With a growing fan base comes as well a growing league of bashers.
"Sa akin, ayoko patulan," shares Ryle of the anonymous bashers online. "But if below the belt or kung super bastos, I have toanswer back. Sasabihin ko mali 'yung ginagawa nila tapos block or mute their messages."
Barbie, who has since learned the fine art of 'dedma,' reveals that she has had to deal with a steady stream of insults and negative comments since her PBB days. "Ngayon nabawasan na. I don't block or report people, because gusto ko ipakita ko sa kanila na wala akong pakialam. Ayoko sila patulan, pero nagbabasa talaga ako ng mga hate comments kasi gusto ko masanay and makarating sa point na wala akong pakialam. Ginagamit ko 'yung hate nila to inspire me to succeed."
For Ryle, on the other hand, he takes a different approach. "Ako nililista ko lahat ng mga tao who brought me down. Tinataga ko talaga sa bato at sinusulat sa papel kasi I wanna show them that one day I'm going to be successful. Lahat ng doubts nila sa akin, I will prove them wrong," he shares with a stern reply.
While the comments from the haters may be hurtful, this is easily soothed by the comforting words and admiration of their RyleBie supporters. And the two have no lack of love coming from their fans. "For me, I want to say thank you to the fans. From the beginning, hanggang ngayon, nandito pa rin kayo at 'di nagsasawa. Salamat sa tiyaga at sa pagmamahal," beams Barbie.
Ryle ends with his own message of love to their fans: "Thank you and please continue to support us in every project. Without your support, 'di kami magiging RyleBie. Sana 'di kayo magsawa at dumami pa kayo. When the time comes at gumanda pa 'yung career namin, 'di namin kakalimutan suklian 'yung tiwala at pagmamahal niyo."

Jake Ejercito Admits To "Being The Real Dad of Ellie", Says "I Never Denied It!"

Actor Jake Ejercito broke his silence and admitted, once and for all, that he is the father of Andi Eigenmann’s daughter Ellie.

When he received his award for Best New Male TV Personality at Star Awards for Music and Television last night, he mentioned and dedicated his award to Ellie.

“To my number one inspiration, my princess, my Ellie…this is for you,” Ejercito said in his acceptance speech.

He won the award for his role in the Lenten special episode of noontime show Eat Bulaga! titled God Gave Me You starring Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza.

In an interview with Pep.ph, he said that he feels good to be open about his real relation to Ellie.

“Actually, it’s very relieving na ngayon napag-uusapan ko na siya very openly. I mean, hindi naman deserve ni Ellie na, you know, na itago. Never ko naman siyang ikinahiya, e,” he said.

When he was asked if he would not speak up about the truth if Andi’s half-sister Max didn’t reveal the truth in a podcast, he said he never denied it in the first place.

“You know what, honestly, I wouldn’t know. Kasi ako naman, I’ve never denied it naman, e. Never pinpointed on anyone. All I wanted is to protect Ellie. Kasi ayoko talagang pag-usapan,” Ejercito said.

Pia Wurtzbach Dumps Dr. Mike Varshavski in Favor of Marlon Stockinger

"I just feel lucky that we got to meet and we've been seeing each other."

Those were Marlon Stockinger's words when asked if he was dating Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach. The Filipino-Swiss race car driver was an attendee of last night's Star Magic Ball, and in an interview with PUSH, he confirmed his relationship with Pia.

"The truth ? Let's put it this way if Pia was here tonight she'd be my date here so yeah obviously we see each other but we just want to keep it down low pretty much but yeah, I've been seeing Pia."

Rumors that they were a couple began when they both started posting photographs of each other in their social media accounts.

The Miss Universe previously dated Dr. Mike Varshavski, who the internet dubbed the "Sexiest Doctor Alive", but according to Marlon that relationship is over:

"I guess we wouldn't be seeing each other if that was happening, so what I know is it's just Pia and I at the moment."

This Special Child Is Being Bullied At School. What The Principal Did Will Surely Make You Angry!

Schools are supposed to be safe zones for each and every child. They are supposed to be communities where children with special conditions get to socialize with other kids that will help them deal with what is happening around them.

However, the case is different with Anjelle Davila’s brother, as she shared what her brother had experienced in school on her Facebook account.

According to Davila, her brother is suffering from a special condition which keeps him from doing normal activities.

She said that her brother has been telling them that some of his classmates are bullying him. She also mentioned that they had conducted meetings with the school principal regarding her brother’s situation but no action has been done by the school authorities.

In a particular instance, Davila shared how her brother was jumped by a group of kids in school which resulted in him getting head wounds. Davila posted photos of her injured brother along with a Facebook rant.

To her surprise, instead of acting upon the situation, the school principal sent her brother home without reporting the incident. It triggered Davila, as the principal had the nerve to blame her brother for what he had experienced.

The principal said that what happened to her brother is his fault because of his special “condition”.

Netizens who read the post cannot help but be enraged from what they read. Some of them expressed their disappointment in the comments section.

Meanwhile, the incident already reached online news sites in New England, particularly Connecticut News12.

Touching Story Of Young Kids In Their Uniforms Selling Sampaguita In Front Of Trinoma! READ IT HERE!

A netizen shared the heart-warming story of two young kids selling sampaguita flowers outside the mall while they were still in their uniforms.

Rei Ann S. Fulgocino, the young girl in the photo, is a grade 8 student while her brother is in grade 6. They caught the attention of the netizen while they were selling sampaguita flowers in front of Trinoma in Quezon City.

The kids shared the reason why they are out selling sampaguita flowers in their uniforms: their mother passed away a long time ago and their father is at home sick so they have no choice but to provide for themselves and their school needs. By selling sampaguita flowers, the two are able to make it through the day. Every day right after their classes, the siblings go outside the mall to peddle their wares.

Rei and her brother came all the way from Marikina in the hopes that they would be able to earn a bit of money to help their financial situation. She even shared how, before they started selling, she was at the top of her class. Sadly, now that they are spending time outside malls rather than studying, she fell down to top 3.

The netizen wanted to inspire millions of Filipinos by telling Rei and her brother’s story and also to call for help to support siblings.

Zooey Deschanel's uniquely colorful Cinderella spin in 'Trolls'

Emmy Award, Golden Globe Award and Grammy Award nominee and Critics’ Choice Award winner Zooey Deschanel cemented her place as a mainstream presence with a handle for nuance when she re-introduced the classical leading lady to the modern audience with her old-fashioned charm in her starring roles in “500 Days of Summer” and “Yes Man”.

Zooey Deschanel as Bridget in TROLLS

Lauded as timeless, vintage and ethereal, Deschanel stars and gives a new spin in her latest (voice )role as Bridget aka Lady Glittersparkles  in DreamWorks Animation’s unique world of “Trolls” along with the talented Justin Timberlake, Anna Kendrick, Russell Brand, Gwen Stefani,  Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Russell Brand, Zooey Deschanel, Jeffrey Tambor, Christine Baranski, James Corden, Kunal Nayyar, Ron Funches, Icona Pop, Quvenzhané Wallis and John Cleese.

“Trolls” is a funny and irreverent new movie from DreamWorks Animation, which is all about happiness. Anna Kendrick stars as the voice of Poppy, the optimistic and relentlessly positive leader of the Trolls. With their trademark, rainbow-colored hair and upbeat personalities, they are the essence of joy. Only one member of the community is sad. Branch (Justin Timberlake), a fearful and over-cautious Troll, is terrified that miserable monsters called The Bergens will find them. The Bergens are only happy when they eat Trolls!   The Bergens are the flip side of the Trolls.   These depressed giants believe that menacing Trolls is the only viable path to their happiness.

Given the Bergens’ king’s (King Gristle Jr. voiced by Christopher Mintz-Plasse) childish ways, it’s no surprise that he is unlucky in love.  But that status may change, if the Bergen scullery maid Bridget aka Lady Glittersparkles has anything to say about it.  Voiced by Zooey Deschanel, Bridget is the sweetest, most kindhearted Bergen in all of Bergen Town; in fact, she may be the only kindhearted Bergen. Bridget is sensitive and soft-spoken, and harbors a crush on the king.  “She’s our Cinderella,” says director Mike Mitchell.

Bridget aka Lady Glittersparkles in TROLLS

Screenwriter Jonathan Aibel has a special affection for Bridget, a character he describes as being “a challenge to write, because when we meet her, she’s uncommunicative. So to see her grow and learn how to express herself is probably my favorite part of the movie, especially when she goes on her dream date with King Gristle.”

An entertainer in every sense of the word, Deschanel sings Lionel Richie’s ballad “Hello” that underscores her character’s touching crush on King Gristle.  Additionally, Deschanel was asked to record a rap verse for a remix of Diana Ross’ “I’m Coming Out.” She explained, “I didn’t want to screw it up, but the one thing I can’t do is that (rap). It was really scary, but Justin was a great coach.”

As her big evening with Gristle unfolds, Bridget gets help from Poppy and her friends, who not only provide the maid with rainbow-colored tresses made from their own collective hair, but try and help to converse with Gristle.  Hair is a defining aspect of the Trolls and their universe, and bringing its nearly supernatural powers to life fell to a specially created “Hair Task Force,” made up of hundreds of artists and technicians working only on hair effects, ensuring that this magical thing was always looking—and acting—fabulous.   All that hair-raising derring-do didn’t come easily:  the Hair Task Force created a total of 1.8 million strands, with Poppy taking 84,000, Branch almost 50,000—and Lady Glittersparkles (aka Bridget) taking the furry crown, using 237,375 strands, with help from Poppy and her pals, of course.

Let your hair down and let the happiness flow when “Trolls” opens November 2 in cinemas nationwide from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.

KAPIT-TUKO KOREAN-STYLE: Anatomy of the Fake Fame & How To Cling Desperately (plus Tips on How To Mob an Unknown in an Airport)

I'm a keen student of the use of Propaganda and that is probably the appeal of Showbiz to me (that is, besides Politics, another propaganda-driven enterprise). Most of the reality we see is mostly propaganda, especially politics. And once you see the "script", "reality" loses credibility, like what is happening to the mainstream political press where it is not so taken seriously anymore these days. While the gullible would still be expected to be the majority, there would come a time when you are not sure anymore, like now. When the tricks have been revealed, the magic is gone. You can feel the shift in  the dynamics & everybody can appreciate the true  reality more clearly once the propaganda was unmasked.

Same in Showbiz. If you have read the biography of the Rolling Stones, you would have known the various tricks to propel their popularity. When they were just starting, their manager hired people to scream, to present a fake popularity which the gullible entertainment press lapped up & consequently wrote about a hot new band, triggering the subsequent bandwagon of real fame (they still had no money to bribe in the beginning so the innocence of the press was genuine).

Reading the Comments in this blog actually led me to discover another propaganda mirage. One of the biggest propaganda creation is the so-called Korea Wave. At a time when the so-called Korean boybands supposedly sold hit albums after hit albums (when nobody could be heard singing their songs), the local producers thought there was a new trend so they created their copycats as usual instead of investigating who was the real buyer of the albums. While previous trends (which up to then only came from the West) produced local hit groups, nobody among the Kpop copycats succeeded. Was there really a trend, or just a propaganda ruse? True, songs from boybands a la One Direction were hot locally in the airwaves- but why the immediate demise of the local kpop copycat bands? Were some here, who were supposed to know better, still not capable to distinguish the true from the fake before committing their cash to a supposed trend?

One could expect novelty as an initial kick to a phenomenon but when a bandwagon did not arrive for the fake one, the ruse would eventually implode. Like what has happened with the Koreans. Actually, if you read the propaganda sites created to pretend popularity, it is humming the usual pretend narrative as if nothing happened. But, as a reader once commented, it took a little blog like ours which pricked the balloon of propaganda. Suddenly, reality focused: low-rating of kdramas, no Korean melody in the airwaves (no  budget to support their own albums for a decade?). That is how flimsy the "popularity" was, you don't have to do much, just redirect the attention to the fact. This also happened in Peru: if you read Korean propaganda, they were very popular in Peru. But this blog discovered that they were shown there for almost a decade, true- but all those time, they were in the bottom of the Peruvian charts, earning 1-2% rating, managing to be noticed slightly only when the Pinoy teleserye Bridges of Love (Puentes de Amor) was shown there & consequently upgraded Asian profile. One can only guess the reasons how they managed to be shown for a long time there with those low ratings and it's definitely not due to their popularity. What was clear was, as one reader put it, their lack of shame in pretending popular & clinging kapit-tuko in a market which has been resistant to them for a decade. What better proof of unpopularity?

Frankly, all of these should have been  something to just laugh about. But unfortunately, they were apparently willing to sabotage a fellow Asian- the Pinoys-  just so they could delude themselves & believe their own  propaganda (read Tales of SABOTAGE in the sidebar). Part of the kapit-tuko package of delusion? It's obvious they will sabotage (more assiduously) for a long time yet.

These are interesting times because they are undertaking big efforts to reshape back reality to the narrative of their propaganda. Their propaganda machine is doing double-time in regaining whatever momentum they thought they had. Unfortunately, the basic reason why they didn't suceed, & won't suceed again, is (as one reader put it) they didn't look the part. They can't change how they look no matter how Plastic Surgery advances, or how strong the propaganda noise, so we know how this still would end up.

But at least, we could learn from their propaganda tactics. We definitely should be wiser before we commit our cash to a supposed trend. Also, we could definitely use the modus operandi of using fake fans. One can always blame  fake fans as scapegoat- they can be as noisy or  combative when protesting for you no  matter if you are a permanent inhabitant of the bottom of the ratings like when they protested the Pinoy teleserye "La Promesa" in Peru when they sensed the Pinoys had more appeal to a market which rejected them for a decade. Oh, anyway, the fake fans don't have to be combative always- they have their other uses too. They can be ordered to mob you no matter how unknown you are in the airport.

Deepwater Horizon Movie Review: Fails To Make The Viewer Care More For Its Thinly Developed Characters

ON APRIL 20, 2010, the worst offshore oil rig disaster happened 40 miles off the coast of Louisiana in the Gulf of Mexico. This is the subject of the movie "Deepwater Horizon", which shows a by-the-numbers account of the events that led to the largest environmental disaster in history that caused the death of 11 crew members.

The movie is told mainly from the point of view of the Transocean chief electronics technician, Mike Williams (Mark Wahlberg). He's first shown at home with his wife Felicia (Kate Hudson) just as he's about to leave for his three-week stay on the oil rig. Their daughter Sydney (Stella Allen) shows them what she did in a school report, using a can of soda, to demonstrate what her father does at work.

What happens to the can is a perfect foreshadowing of what exactly will happen in the oil rig later. We then meet two other important characters. First is Dynamic Positioning Officer Andrea Fleytas (Gina Rodriguez of "Jane the Virgin") who's shown repairing her own car when it won't start. Then there's Installation Manager and crew leader Jimmy Harrell (Kurt Russell) who asks a British Petroleum (BP) executive to take off his magenta tie since it's the color of their highest alert.

Jimmy gets mad when he learned that BP manager Donald Vidrine (John Malkovich, who'd appear to be the villain in the film), let go of the crew who's already there to do safety tests for a fee of $100,000,
without the test being performed. Jimmy then insisted on having a pressure test done and this reveals alarming results that might put the oil rig in danger. But Vidrine dismisses it, saying there's not mud pushed up by the pressure.

Mike warns that the rig is in a precarious situation and soon the drill crew sees explosions of oil, gas and mud. By then, Jimmy is already taking a shower while Mike is talking with Felicia on skype when something explodes and they're cut off. The disaster gets worse and the ship moored closely to the oil rig detect the dangerous happenings and warns the Coast Guard. Soon, everyone is trying to get into lifeboats to save their lives. Jimmy is badly injured but continues to help in saving his crew members. Mike does his best to find the missing Andrea.

Directed by Peter Berg (who also directed Mark Wahlberg in "Lone Survivor", an acclaimed 2013 film about a mission to kill a Taliban leader that went wrong) does solid work in presenting the film as a procedural of what really happened on the oil rig. You may not exactly understand what's going on but they try their best to explain how the rig works. In effect, the British Petroleum Corporation people just want to get the drilling going so they can start making money while the crew is more concerned about safety. Greed gets the better of the BP people and that's when disaster strikes, and it's beautifully staged with the help of fiery and awesome special effects on the big screen that make you feel that you're actually there on that fateful hellish day.

Honestly, though, it fails in making the viewer to care more and be more emotionally involved in its thinly developed human characters who could have made this a victorious story of survival. John Malkovich is very good and effective as the villainous Donald Vidrine who talks with a Cajun accent, but we wish that there's also an effort to make deeper connection with the other characters so they'll come out more sympathetic to create more thrill and tension in us viewers.

The recent movie, "Sully", shows this can be done. We already know what happened and how it ends, but it still succeeded in creating a lot of tension for us viewers. On the other hand, "Deepwater Horizon" makes us feel more like we're just watching a documentary that re-enacts the increasingly perilous incidents and circumstances that lead to the tragical catastrophe. Imagine, 11 people perished in this and yet they were given matter-of-fact roles that could have been more emotionally engrossing if the script were better written. In the end credits, the photos of these people are shown, along with the other real life characters, and we really wish we could have felt more empathy for all of them.
