Coco Movie Review: 2017's Best Animated Picture That Touches The Heart With Wonderful Message About The Importance Of Family

THE NEW animated movie from Disney-Pixar, "Coco", is a shoo in for the best animated picture in next year's Oscars. It is beautifully crafted and the story really touches the heart. The lead character and narrator is Miguel (voice by Anthony Gonzales), a boy whose biggest passion is music, but he has to suppress it as his family has banned music in their home after their grandfather, a singer-songwriter, abandoned them in favor of his own career to pursue stardom.

The movie is family friendly and we saw it with our children, grandchildren and we all enjoyed it, including the animated short film that precedes it, "Olaf's Frozen Christmas", which is a real big treat for fans of Elsa and Anna, like my granddaughter.

Set in Mexico on the Day of the Dead when the spirits of dead people can visit their relatives here on earth, Director Lee Unkrich ("Finding Nemo", "Toy Story 2 & 3", "Monsters Inc.") gets to please both young and old viewers alike combining fantastic elements with mature themes about family and forgiveness. Songs are incorporated in the music-themed film and they get to hit the right notes.

Miguel tries to follow his dream by joining a music competition and he tries to steal the guitar of his idol, Ernesto de la Cruz, who he thinks is his great, great grandpa. But this lands him into trouble when he ends up in the land of the dead where he meets talking skeletons. A skeleton asks his help so his loved ones on earth won't forget him. This is Hector (voice by Gael Garcia Bernal), who turns out to play a very vital part in the story.

Miguel also gets to meet many of his ancestors, including Mama Imelda, the wife of his grandpa who was abandoned and is very bitter about it. Miguel should obtain the blessing of a dead relative so he can return to the land of living, otherwise he'll remain trapped in the land of the dead forever. To do this, he embarks on an unforgettable adventure of a lifetime and also uncovers a mystery, with the help of lovable animal sidekicks as spirit guides.

The good-hearted Miguel is an adorable protagonist and the surprise villain (we won't say who) is appropriately repulsive and gets the punishment he surely deserves. As to why the film is titled "Coco", we also won't reveal to you but the climax involving Coco and her memories will surely tug at your heartstrings. The twist in the narrative is truly quite inspired.

The emotional aspects of the story, especially the bond that develops between Miguel and Hector, are presented with poignancy that will no doubt move audiences. For kid viewers, death is portrayed not as something tragic and scary but just a transition into another world where the memory of loved ones who are left behind play an important role.

The animation is so vivid, like the silent grandmother on the verge of Alzheimer sporting the pleats and wrinkles of her advanced age, Miguel's abuelita as a fiery spitfire who hits people with her slippers, and Miguel's dog Dante as a hairless pet with a very long tongue. The texture, the designs (including the skeletons) are all impressive, often recalling Mexican art. All in all, it's a great animated film that presents a supernatural fairy tale about the importance of family while celebrating life and honoring those who have gone ahead of us to the great beyond.

Mayor Herbert Bautista & 1st District Councilor Mayen Juico Invite The Public To Join Or Watch The LGBT Pride March & Show On December 9

QUEZON CITY is considered as the most gay friendly city in the country as they have the Quezon City Pride Council (QCPC) that oversees the integration of all city programs and projects for the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual & transgenders) community. The first in the country, this was created by Mayor Herbert Bautista to show his administration's support for the implementation of human rights and gender-based policies without bias or prejudice.

They now have an ordinance calling for a comprehensive anti-discrimination policy on sexual orientation and gender identity. Councilor Mayen Juico of the first district authored this Gender Fair ordinance with EJ Ulanday as chief action office of the Gay Pride Council. They have a coming big project on hand, the Gay Pride March to be held on December 9, Saturday, 3 PM, starting at Morato Avenue. Sure to join the parade is Mr. Gay World winner last March, John Raspado.

They are now inviting all prominent and respected gays to join the parade and show their support to the LGBT community, like gay icons Boy Abunda, Rep. Geraldine Roman and Vice Ganda.

"Marami na kaming inimbitahan through the networks, pero laging ang tanong, magkano ang budget," says EJ at the presscon sponsored by Pork@Your Own Risk on Dr. Lazcano St.. "The Gay Pride March is a non-profitable, non-income generating project kaya wala kaming maibabayad na talent fees sa celebrities na sasali. Ginagawa lang ito for fun and to show that the LGBT is united in our campaign against discrimination sa mga gays. Still, marami pa ring
magpa-participate to do production numbers sa gabi ng Gay Pride March. Bawat barangay from the 6 districts of QC, may kanya-kanyang gay officer coordinating with us at magpapadala sila ng representatives nila sa march at sa entertainment show that follows. We're also inviting other gay communities in Metro-Manila, not just QC. May bonggang fashion show sa QC Wonderland, kaya join na kayo sa amin sa December 9 sa Morato Circle at sa parada around QC. If you want to join us, please register online at 2jb2Guh or visit our Facebook page at Facebook/qcpridemarch. Carmina Villaroel Back As A Kapuso In 'Kambal, Karibal', Talks About Her Meeting Bb Gandanghari With Her Family In Tow

CARMINA VILLAROEL first appeared in an episode of the travel show, "Road Trip", then she played a guest role in "Super Ma'am" as Marian Rivera's mentor. Now, after 7 years, she's officially back as a regular Kapuso in a primetime soap, "Kambal, Karibal", that starts airing on Monday night in place of "Alyas Robin Hood".

It's easy for her to return to GMA-7 where she hosted a morning show with Janice and Gelli de Belen for a long time. "Kasi nga ako, I don't burn my bridges. As an actress, siempre, kunsaan may trabaho, dun ka. Pati si Zoren nga, narito rin sa GMA in 'Ika-6 na Utos'. Yun namang kambal namin, sumasayaw sa 'Eat Bulaga'."

She's happy with her role in "Kambal, Karibal". "The story starts with me and Alfred Vargas," she says. "Ikinasal kami then I got pregnant with twins. But si Marvin Agustin, na obsessed sa akin, manipulates things para mabilanggo si Alfred and I got involved in an accident at pinalabas niyang namatay yung mga anak kong kambal. Di ko alam, buhay pala sila at pinaampon lang sa kasabwat niyang si Jean Garcia. Nang lumaki sila, Crisanta becomes Bianca Umali at yung fraternal twin niyang si Criselda, died as a child pero naging multo, played by Pauline Mendoza."

She's happy to do "Kambal, Karibal" as it's her reunion with Gloria Romero. "Siyang mag-aalaga sa akin dito after the tragedy that happens to my family. I'm so happy kasi 12 years kaming magkasama sa 'Palibhasa Lalake'. Reunion din namin ito ni Miguel Tanfelix na child actor pa lang nang makasama ko noon sa original 'Mulawin'. First time ko namang makatrabaho rito sina Kuya Christopher de Leon, at sina Alfred Vargas and Marvin Agustin, so, masaya. Kaya lang, grabe ang iyakan dito. Buong pilot week pa lang, iyak ako nang iyak kasi nga nabilanggo ang asawa ko at namatay ang mga anak namin. Siempre, mahirap humugot kasi in real life, ang saya-saya ng buhay ko. Pero dito ko na-prove, kaya ko pa naman palang magdrama. Kasi nga nanay naman ako so mahirap yung isipin mong mamatayan ka ng mga anak ko."

What can she say that her former husband, Rustom Padilla, is now legally known as BB Gandanghari? "Ako naman, whatever makes him happy, okay lang. Kung dun ba siya maligaya, e. Nagkita-kita nga kami sa gym sa Rockwell. Kasama ko si Zoren at mga anak namin. Masaya, chikahan. Parang old friends lang. Lahat, happy."

Introducing Andy Ryu (Ryu Sang Wook), The New Korean Actor Paired With Heart Evangelista In 'My Korean Jagiya' To Be Alexander Lee's Rival

ANDY RYU (Ryu Sang Wook), the new Korean leading man of Heart Evangelista in "My Korean Jagiya", is formally introduced to the press by GMA-7 and the consensus is that he is better looking than Alexander Lee. The eldest of three kids, his family is from Daegu, Korea, four hours away from the capital, Seoul. The eldest of three kids, he was born on March 4, 1985 but looks younger than his age. His two siblings now work in Seoul and L.A. Writers familiar with K drama say he's a lookalike of Song Joong Ki and he agrees. Speaking with an interpreter, he says he and Song attended the same acting school in Seoul.

"When I got there, they told me they already have an actor who looks like me and it's Song," he says. "When people see me in public, they sometimes mistake me for him."

How did he get the role of Alexander Lee's rival over Heart Evangelista in "My Korean Jagiya". "The manager of Alexander is a friend of my manager. He told my manager they're looking for a new actor in the show and he would like to recommend me. My manager told me about it. At first, I was nervous because I don't speak English well but I got excited because I already heard of 'My Korean Jagiya', so I said yes."

He's been in Manila for a week now and he likes it here because everyone is nice. Does he know Alexander in Korea? "Yes, I know him but just as an acquaintance. But since I arrived here, we get to see each other almost every day because we stay in the same hotel. He introduced me to halo-halo and we now eat it everyday."

How about Heart? "I researched about her so I know she's a big star here. At first, I'm quite nervous to work with her and it's also my first time to work overseas, but she turned out to be very friendly, approachable, charming, talented, full of energy and it's an honor to work with her."

He knows Heart is married to a senator. "I haven't met him but Alexander says he's very nice. Heart says she'll invite us to have dinner at their home soon."

He himself has a girlfriend, Kim Hye Jin, also an actress. It's good she allowed him to work in Manila. "She's very supportive of me. She'll visit me here if she'd find the time. This is the fourth time I'm in Manila. The first three are all for vacations, including Cebu. I never thought I'd get the chance to work here someday."

He just finished his required military service of almost two years in Korea. He is best known for two shows, the romancde "Cinderella Man" and the historical drama "Queen Seondok". He has done one movie and just before he left for Manila, he finished a new soap called 'Run Toward Tomorrow".

In "My Korean Jagiya", he plays a very popular Korean actor named Gong Woo. In the story, he used to be just a supporting actor to Alexander as Jun Ho, but when Xander retired and stayed in Manila, he inherited Xander's popularity. He just did a hit movie in Korea titled "Bus in Busan" and he comes to Manila to promote it. Their company hired Heart as Gia to be his interpreter in Manila and he falls for her, turning the show into a love triangle story with two Koreans fighting over Heart's attention.

Jameson Blake doesn't want to be compared with fellow Hashtags members

Jameson Blake doesn't want to be compared with fellow Hashtags members

2017 has become a shining year for Hashtags member Jameson Blake.

He was part of Bea Alonzo-starrer primetime drama "A Love to Last" and made his film debut with Khalil Ramos in "2 Cool 2 Be 4gotten" where he won a Best Supporting Actor award at the Cinema One Originals Independent Film Festival.

Because he's been getting numerous projects this year,, Jameson is being dubbed as the "best" from Hashtags, as well as being pitted against his fellow member Ronnie Alonte.

However, in an interview with entertainment wevsite PUSH, Jameson said he doesn't pay attention to such comments. He just sticks to perfecting his craft and keeping things low-key.

"It's flattering of course if someone said na mas magaling ka… Pero I won't judge myself na I'm better or anything," he said, adding that what people say are just opinions. "Sila naman 'yung nagde-decide, eh. Nothing against him… I don't want to be competitive with everyone."

Jameson also said that he's not the "best" Hashtags member; they all see each other as equals.

"If someone would say na parang ako 'yung one of the top sa Hashtags, well siguro let's say in terms of getting projects. It's a good sign naman, at least I can say na I'm blessed to have these... It's flattering naman and nice to hear naman but I don't like to compare kasi with each other," he said.

This Time I’ll Be Sweeter Movie Review: Barbie & Ken Are Good And Deserve A Better Movie

WE HAD such high hopes for "This Time I'll Be Sweeter" because the tandem of Barbie Forteza and Ken Chan has such a huge fan base after their TV romcom, "Meant To Be", became such a big toprater. But after watching the movie, we realized it's not really successful in pleasing their fans.

It starts quite well, with Barbie as Erika, a writer in their school paper who has a big crush on Ken as Tristan, a varsity swimmer. Just when she thought she and Ken already have a relationship, another girl comes along to say she and Ken have long been going steady.

Barbie is crushed but gets over it and a couple of years later, she meets Ken again and she thinks love is lovelier the second time around. But history repeats itself for her and she feels betrayed once more. Actually, their split seems more just like plot mechanics because it could have been so easy for Ken to explain that he and the girl who claims to be his fiancee (Thea Tolentino) have actually broken up because Thea cheated on him. So Barbie goes to Cambodia to work there while nursing a broken heart.

If the movie just focused on their relationship, perhaps viewers would have embraced the film more, but somewhere along the way, it gets inexplicably over dramatic when one major character dies from a plane crash.

The airline is owned by Ken's company who refused to pay the orphaned family members of the passengers who died. And we see Barbie and Ken comforting three children whose dad is a crash victim and accompanying them to their home where there worried mom is very hostile to Ken for being the son of the airline owner. This is a tedious and messy subplot from which the movie never recovered.

Instead of helping the narrative, this plot contrivance bogs it down and makes it cumbersome viewing. What's worse, it's quickly forgotten in the next sequences. Even Ken's dad, Neil Ryan Sese, who seems to be a cruel contravida giving unwanted complications to the story, suddenly exits and is never seen again.

The film doesn't succeed in making us truly care for the insensitive character played by Ken who doesn't at all deserve the sympathy of the viewers. Also, we don't really feel excited seeing him and Barbie end up together by the film's conclusion.

The ending is really so weak instead of being a triumphant finale for Barbie. You'd really wonder as to why she is such a masochistic doormat and forgives easily after Ken caused her a lot of pain. Barbie and Ken can both act well and they really deserve a better material for their first big screen outing than this bland and tepid romance. Sayang.

Kris Aquino's smile from the heart is back again

What made Queen of Social Media Kris Aquino smile from her heart again?

?i just blurred my surroundings but pretty much just zoomed in on my reflection, because while looking at my face i noticed- the smile is back in my eyes so i won't use an app to remove my eyebags...

i fought hard to be able to do this- smile again naturally, from my heart- not just from discipline or because i was in front of people... this was actually a quick picture taken after a full day of work.

My necklace is called the "Circle of Love"- i've been loved & i'm continued to be loved by so many who really prayed & supported me to bring this smile back.

So this is a very grateful me sincerely saying, eyebags and all- THANK YOU FOR GIVING ME SO MANY REASONS TO SMILE AGAIN. ??????"

“Matilda The Musical” Theatre Review: Talented Child Actors Make This Musical About Child Empowerment Very Entertaining From Beginning To End

"Matilda the Musical" is based on the 1988 children's novel by Roald Dahl (he also wrote "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory") filmed in Hollywood in 1996 with Mara Wilson in the title role. It was made into a musical in 2010 by the Royal Shakespeare Company, premiered at West End in 2011 and in Broadway in 2013, receiving wide critical acclaim.

Matilda is a bright and precocious child who's unhappy because she's ignored and neglected by her own parents. In school, she finds comfort in the caring Miss Honey who defends her from the cruel headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, a terror who makes the lives of all the other children miserable. The show then becomes an inspiring tale of empowerment for the most oppressed group of all, innocent children who can easily be abused by grown ups.

There's a distinctly British consciousness in the material and this is well served by the entire cast who tries its best to deliver all their lines with a pronounced British accent. When we watched the play, the title role was played by Uma Martin and she's quite a marvel as Matilda. Someone tells us another child actress is even better, but we're honestly quite satisfied with Uma who's just full of winning verve and spunk.

The actors in this fine ensemble all deliver well in their respective roles, with Jamie Wilson's casting as the cross-dressing headmistress Miss Trunchbull, who hates children (calling them "maggots) and loves punishing them, quite a grotesque but truly ingenious masterstroke.

Other standouts are Joaquin Valdez (special kudos for entertaining the audience even during the intermission, this talented guy surely deserves more exposure) and Carla Laforteza as Matilda's irresponsible and cartoonish parents, Cris Villonco as Miss Honey and Emiline Guinid as Mrs. Phelps.

All the child actors who support Uma as Matilda's schoolmates are splendid, performing exuberantly with so much contagious gusto in the well choreographed production numbers, particularly in the rousing, riotous "Revolting Children".

The immersive sets, studded with books on towering shelves all over the place since Matilda loves reading, gives the stage a wonderful, magical look. You have up to December 10 to watch "Matilda" at Meralco Theatre on Fridays at 8:00 p.m., Saturdays at 2:00 and 8:00 p.m. and Sundays at 2:00 p.m. Tickets available at Ticketworld.

Make Way For Clique5, A New Boyband Introduced And Managed By A New Talent Management Company Called 3:16 Events

CLIQUE5 is a new boyband managed by 3:16 Events and Talent Management Company. They were presented to the press and performed several song and dance numbers. Their manager, Kathy, says this is just the beginning as their company will also introduce soon a girl group called Belladonnas. They will have a big show with their girl counterparts in Japan by next month.

"Total package sila na hindi limited ang talent kasi they underwent rigid dance workshops, voice lessons, personality development and acting workshop," she adds. "We made sure they're well prepared at hindi hilaw bago namin sila isinalang in performing."

Their first song is a Christmas ditty in time for the coming holiday season, "Tuwing Pasko, written by Joven Tan, who did two other songs for them, "Bakit Hindi" and "Puwede Ba, Teka Muna". Their voices have very good blending and given the chance, they might just make it in showbiz. There's a plan for them to launch a full length album with Ivory Records.

The group's members are Karl (this mestizo guy is 17, the best looking in the group and a high school senior at Philippine Christian University), Sean, Clay, Josh and Marco Paolo (the tallest at 6 ft. tall, he's 19, a martial artist and a balikbayan from Vienna, Austria.) Their ages range from 16 years old to 20.

Karl, Sean, Josh and Marco Paolo got to know each other as contestants in the Circle of Ten model search then they performed Clique5. Clay is an aircraft mechanic who auditioned so he can become a member of the group. They all want to try acting and their mutual showbiz crush who they'd like to work with is Liza Soberano.

Asked what's their difference from other boybands, here's their combined reply: "We're not products of a contest but very rigid training that made us versatile as we can do different genres in singing and dancing. We're also into acting and we want to grow in the industry as total performers. We look at each other as brothers, not rivals, and we're here to help and support one another."

Well, here's my best wishes for this group. The competition in showbiz now is so tough and even if you're a part of a top network that gives you regular exposure, it's not really a guarantee that you'd make it. The most popular male group now is Hashtags and it's because they have a regular daily exposure in "Showtime".

The other ABS-CBN group, Boyband PH, products of a nationwide search and contest, isn't as lucky. Someone who joined it but was ejected, Anthony Labrusca, is now even more popular than any of its members.

GMA has also introduced several boybands, from the Kpop group called Down to Mars (which has since folded up), to Top One from the talent search, To The Top, and One Up (whose members are all good looking), but they have yet to really make it big. So it will be one big uphill battle for Clique5 and here's hoping they'll succeed to find their own niche in local showbiz.

Teresa Loyzaga Left Her Job In Australia To Be With Her Two Sons Who Chose To Live In Manila, Now Part Of New ABS-CBN Soap, 'Hanggang Saan'

TERESA LOYZAGA has left Australia and returned to Manila for good. "Kasi my two sons, Diego and Joseph, have both decided to come home here at dito na mag-work, so wala na kong kasama ako roon. Mahirap naman yung magpabalik-balik ako dito at doon to see them, kaya umuwi na rin ako," she says.

Didn't she have her own job in Australia? "Yes, but I resigned na from my job as a flight attendant in a big airline kahit walang kasiguraduhan kung makakakuha ako ng bagong trabaho dito. But I'm just really thankful that ABS-CBN now got me at isinama ako sa cast ng 'Hanggang Saan' that will start airing this November 27. I play the mother of Sue Ramirez, na magiging love interest ni Arjo Atayde na anak naman ni Sylvia Sanchez. Kami ang babago sa buhay nilang mag-ina."

Teresa is very close to Diego, her son with Cesar Montano. She usually accompanies to his presscons and takes his pictures. She was also seen in MOA Arena last Saturday and took photos of Diego while participating in the Bench fashion show. What kind of advice does she give to Diego? "I tell him to always be the best in his craft, be professional, and don't ever hurt women intentionally. He should just think of me and what I myself went through."

Shaira Mae De La Cruz Of TV5 Now Has Shows On GMA-7, Refuses To Talk About BF Edgar Allan Guzman

SHAIRA MAE DE LA CRUZ is a discovery of TV5 in their Artista Academy search. Her love team with batchmate Mark Neumann clicked in several "Wattpad Presents" episodes even if, off cam, she was then going steady with Edgar Allan Guzman, with whom she is rumored to have broken up.

After TV5 has stopped producing local shows, she's lucky APT Entertainment got her to be part of their morning youth oriented show, "Trops". "Supposed to be, guesting lang yun, but sinuwerte ako, ginawa akong regular member ng cast," she says. "Then after that, naisama-sama rin nila ako sa 'Eat Bulaga' and 'Sunday PinaSaya'. And now, kasama rin ako sa movie nila with Jose Manalo, Wally Bayola and Paolo Ballesteros, 'Trip Ubusan: The Lolas vs. Zombies' which opens today in theatres."

She enjoyed doing the movie where she is paired with Miggy Tolentino of "Trops". "Masaya sa set kasi kasama rin namin sina Taki Saito and Kenneth Medrano na cast members din noon ng 'Trops'. And it's fun working with the tree Lolas kasi lagi silang nagpapatawa sa set so para lang kaming naglalaro sa shooting. Pero yung scenes na hinahabol kami ng zombies, scary talaga."

She's now doing shows with GMA-7 and Edgar Allan is also currently in GMA doing "My Korean Jagiya". Do they get to see each other? Is it true they broke up because Edgar's family and manager are against her?

"Basta tungkol diyan, please lang, ayoko nang pag-usapan. Magkaiba naman kami ng shows, e. So basta sa ganyan, ayoko na lang sumagot hangga't maari, kasi tahimik na ang buhay ko ngayon. At mas gusto ko, yung tahimik na lang lagi at walang intriga."

Various Stories About The Guest Celebrities Who Attended The Birthday Bash Of Well Loved Talent Manager & 'Eat Bulaga' Exec Malou Choa Fagar

WE HAD SO MUCH fun at the birthday bash of well loved talent manager and "Eat Bulaga" exec Malou Choa Fagar at Mother Lily's Valencia Events Place last Saturday night. The highlight of the evening for us is Edgar "Bobot" Mortiz singing "Yesterday I Heard the Rain". He certainly hasn't lost his touch at all when it comes to singing and his daughter Camille also sings very well.

We also enjoyed the singing of Tirso Cruz III, Ali Sotto, Maila Gumila, Roderick Paulate. Other guests in the affair are Bibeth Orteza, hubby Carlitos Siguion Reyna and son Rafa, Lorna Tolentino and sons Ralph and Renz, Maricel Soriano, Laurice Guillen and daughter Ina with her Italian boyfriend, Gina Alajar, Amy Austria with husband Duke Ventura, Pip's wife Lyn and daughter Djanin, talent managers Dolor Guevarra, the balikbayan Shirley Kwan and Veanna Fores, banker Danny Dolor, Viva's June Torrejon and Lawrence Tan, Anna Pingol of Yes Magazine, Allan Diones of Pak,

Bibeth says that after her stint as a theatre actress in Singapore some months ago, it seems they liked her performance so much that they were getting her again, this time for a musical. "When I told them that I don't sing, they said they thought all Filipinos are good singers," she laughs. Bibeth continues to be one of the most enlightened members of the MTRCB who patiently explains to the newly appointed members the why's and wherefore's of their job in the review board.

Her son Rafa is part of the new Jerrold Tarog historical epic, "Gen. Goyong". "I play Julian del Pilar, the brother of Gen. Goyong played by Paulo Avelino, so mahaba yung role ko," he says. "Patapos na ang shooting namin and the movie is scheduled to be released by the middle of next year."

Gina Alajar happily informs us that her three sons have all given her grandchildren. Ryan Eigenmann has three, Geoff has one and the youngest, AJ (based in the U.S.), also has one. She's now in the cast of the new GMA-7 soap, "Hindi Kita Kayang Iwanan", playing contravida to Yasmien Kurdi who became an HIV victim after she was raped.

Laurice Guillen is the director of the GMA megahit, "Ika-6 na Utos", which is extended until next year. She also appears as a drug lord in "Dark is the Knight", a film about extra judicial killings starring Gina Alajar and Phillip Salvador which was screened in the recent Toronto Filmfest. Her daughter Ina is with Gina in "Hindi Kita Kayang Iwanan".

Lorna Tolentino says she has happily resumed the taping of her new ABS-CBN soap, "Asintado", while son Renz is in GMA-7's "Impostora" playing the role of an NBI agent. Maila Gumila tells us she plays a hotshot lawyer in ABS-CBN's new soap, "Hanggang Saan", who defends Arnold Reyes pro bono after he was accused of killing Eric Quizon when the culprit is actually Sylvia Sanchez who had to do it to save her son Arjo Atayde, who also happens to be Maila's top student in law school.

And Ali Sotto is excited that she will be a grandmother any moment now as it's the "kabuwanan" of the wife of her son Chino. "It's going to be a boy!" she proudly declares, showing us on her cellphone her grandson's ultrasound photo. She also showed us a poem she has written for her late son, Miko, who left 12 years ago, and we told her it will be an excellent song with touching lyrics so she should ask someone to set it into music.

The Mountain Between Us Movie Review: An Engaging Story Of Survival That Ends Up As An Interracial Romance

'THE MOUNTAIN BETWEEN US' starts as a survival story and ends up being a love story about an interracial romance. The lead characters are Alex (Kate Winslet), a photojournalist, and Ben (Idris Elba), a neurosurgeon. They're total strangers on their way from Idaho to Denver. Alex is getting married the next day while Ben is supposed to operate on a young patient. But commercial flights are suddenly cancelled due to a coming snowstorm.

Alex suggests to Ben that they team up by chartering a small plane so they can get to their destination on time. They hire an independent pilot (Beau Bridges) who takes his own dog on their flight. But like most well laid plans, they didn't foresee that their pilot will have a heart attack during their flight and their plane crashes into the snowy mountains of Northern Utah.

They're both wounded but Alex also suffers from a broken leg. What's worse is that their pilot didn't file their flight, their plane's beacon and radio were destroyed in the crash, there's no cellphone signal, and they are on their own with no one even looking for them. So they have no choice but to fight for their own survival while stranded amidst very beautiful but very harsh wintry surroundings in the wilderness, beautifully captured for the big screen by cinematographer Mandy Walker.

Both Alex and Ben have strong personalities, but they must now learn how to co-exist in order to survive the plane crash. Ben, who's quiet and secretive, wants them to just stay on the place where their plane crashed until rescue comes along, but Alex, who tries to probe Ben to get to know more about him and his wife, says she thinks their best chance is if they'd venture to trek back to civilization and look for help, even if she has an injured leg.

During their stay in the mountains, they start to learn more about each other. At first they think that they won't survive their ordeal as they don't even have food, except for a cougar who threatened Kate's life and ends up being eaten. But as days turn into weeks and they trek from the mountains to lower elevations, they start not to lose hope that they might just make it.

Idris Elba is one of the busiest stars today. He was in the last "Star Trek: Beyond" as Krall, played the Gunslinger in "Dark Tower", was also in "Molly's Game" with Jessica Chastain and "Thor: Ragnarok" as Heimdall. He also did voice work in hit animated films like "Jungle Book", "Finding Dory" and "Zootopia", and various TV series. We last saw Kate Winslet as the antagonist in the "Divergent" series and it's nice to see her back in a lead role now.

Considering that "Mountain Between Us" is a film about just two people (plus a dog), both Kate and Idris give persuasive performances that bring gravitas to their respective roles and manage to make the narrative unfold in an interesting manner.

At the start, you don't think they're a likeable pairing but their chemistry builds up gradually in the course of the film as they face tough trials to survive. If you prefer non-gooey, non-sudsy romantic stories with a different kind of low-key treatment, you will surely enjoy this movie with its final scene set in London, as directed by Israeli filmmaker Hany Abu Assad who's best known for his acclaimed film about suicide bombers, "Paradise Now".

Arjo Atayde On The Challenge Of Playing A Good Boy In 'Hanggang Saan' After His Intense Contravida Role In 'Ang Probinsyano'

ARJO ATAYDE gets to work with his mom, Sylvia Sanchez, in ABS-CBN's new afternoon soap, "Hanggang Saan", that will replace ""The Promise of Forever". So how does he feel about the prospect of acting with his mom? "It's unexpected, but I'm so happy and thankful to be working with my own mom as not every mother and son are given this kind of opportunity, so I'm just enjoying every moment of it," says Arjo. "The first thing I did when I learned about the project, sabi ko sa kanya, ang taba mo, kailangan, magpapayat ka, so pinilit ko siya to run everyday with me."

In "Hanggang Saan", Arjo plays Paco, a law student and Sylvia is his mom who is forced to do a criminal act when Arjo's son was put in danger. He plays a good boy here, unlike in his past shows where he usually played bad guys, like in "Ang Probinsyano'' as contravida to Coco Martin. So how is his transition from bad to good? "Mahirap. Six years na ako in acting and this is a new role and new genre for me. But I'm confident that with my mom's help, who's my number one critic, maitatawid namin ito. Siya ang nagsasabi sa'kin kung kulang o sobra ang acting ko, e."

How will Sylvia assess her son's acting? "Even as a newcomer, okay na siyang umarte," she says. "Nag-workshop sa Star Magic at dun pa lang, nakita na namin ng father niya, malalim siya, kaya proud kami sa kanya. Ako, marunong din nung nagsisimula ako, pero na-develop na lang through the years dahil kinarir ko. Siya, malayo pa ang mararating niya as an actor."

And how will Arjo describe his mom? "Mabunganga siya, but very caring. I remember one time, umuwi ako nang madaling araw, I was so careful na may magising, tapos biglang may nagbukas ng ilaw at lumabas siya sabay sabi sa'kin: Saan ka galing? I'm really proud to work with my mom in this project that aims to touch people's lives and give inspiration to viewers about one's love for family."

Bianca Umali Glad That Her Love Team With Miguel Tanfelix Has A New Primetime Show On GMA-7 And A New Movie, 'Barbie, D'Wonder Beki'

BIANCA UMALI has a new and still untitled primetime TV show with ka-love team Miguel Tanfelix that will start airing on November 27, and they also have a new movie, 'Barbi, D Wonder Beki' that opens in theaters on November 29.

"We really feel so blessed kasi tuloy-tuloy ang trabaho namin, both sa big and small screen," says Bianca who's becoming more and more of a charmer every day. "Yung 'Barbi, D'Wonder Beki' ang first official movie namin na magka-love team kami. Kasi before, child stars pa kami. Sa story, I play Miley at siya naman, si Cyrus. Pangalan pa lang namin, nakakatawa na, di ba? Learning experience para sa amin ang movie kasi nakasama namin sina Paolo Ballesteros, Joey de Leon, Joey Marquez na puro magagaling sa comedy kaya we learned a lot from them, lalo na kay Paolo. Natutulala na lang ako kapag pinapanood ko siya when he gets transformed into Wonder Beki. Sobrang galing niya."

They're also busy taping for their new show and someone quips they're now really inseparable. "E, ayaw rin po naman namin talagang maghiwalay," adds Bianca. "Parang comfort zone na namin ang isa't isa kasi child stars pa lang kami, magkasama na kami, hanggang sa naging teeny boppers kami and now, mature roles na nga ang gagampanan namin. Bale eight shows na yung pinagsamahan namin at itong latest show ang most challenging kasi gusto nila kaming lumayo na sa dati naming pa-cute and sweet image. More of heavy drama raw ito and different from the teen-oriented shows we did in the past, kaya kailangang mag-level up na kami talaga."

Will they be doing their first real kissing scene for the first time? "We don't know yet. Before kasi, yung kissing scenes namin, puro daya lang talaga. Hindi pa namin alam at this point kung ire-require kaming magka-kissing scene."

Miguel Tanfelix butts in and says: "Sa akin, okay lang naman. Pero si Bianca, siguro maghihintay pa siyang maging 18 muna siya. Yun kasi gusto ng lola niya, e."

Even if they're both busy with work, they do not neglect their studies. Miguel is now a college junior taking up entrpreneurship while Bianca is in grade 12 and will finish high school next year. She intends to take up interior design in college.

Social Media Is Where Some Writers Now Get The News & Stories They Write About Celebrities In Their Columns

IT'S CUSTOMARY NOW for a lot of showbiz writers to depend on the social media accounts of celebrities to get news stories they can write about in their entertainment pages. Parang nangangahoy sila sa Instagram, Twitter and Facebook, then quote the stories of the stars and copy and paste the pictures posted by celebrities on their columns or pages.

We really don't know how effective or worthwhile this is, because if we're the reader, then we'd rather not read these second hand stories on newspaper columns. We'll prefer to just go directly to the primary source and read the actual accounts of movie stars in their Instagram, Twitter or Facebook walls. You get first hand, direct information pa and not mere hearsay. What do you think?
