American Sniper Review: Taut And Gripping True To Life War Drama

CLINT EASTWOOD has two best director Oscars for “Unforgiven” and “Million Dollar Baby”, but his recent works have proven to be lackluster, like “Trouble with the Curve”, “Hereafter”, “Gran Torino”, “J. Edgar” and “Jersey Boys”. But he’s now back in fighting form in “American Sniper”, a biographical war drama based on the exploits of Christopher Kyle, considered “the most Lethal Sniper in U.S. military history” with 255 kills. The movie is a certified box office hit and is now nominated in the Oscar for best picture and also best actor for Bradley Cooper in the title role.

Kyle is already a sharpshooter even as a child when he was hunting deer with his dad in Texas. He later becomes a rodeo cowboy. When he sees on TV the news coverage of the U.S. embassy bombing in 1998, he joins the U.S.Navy and becomes a Navy Seal sniper. He marries Taya Renae (Sienna Miller) and is sent to Iraq after the bombing of the World Trade Center. He becomes a legend for his marksmanship.

Manny Pacquaio and Floyd Mayweather talking at the center court of the Heat Game

Boxing superstars Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. were seen together Tuesday night (US Time) at a Miami Heat game in Florida.

Mayweather had a courtside seat next to the Heat bench, directly across from Pacquiao's seat on the opposite sideline for a game against the Bucks. The two fighters may be getting closer to a long anticipated bout that would be the richest ever in boxing — potentially grossing as much as $250 million.

Mayweather said last month that he's ready to make the fight happen May 2.

Pacquiao responded a few days later on social media, telling Mayweather that it's time to "give the fans the fight they want." In recent days, another tweet was posted to Pacquiao's account where he said "I can easily beat @FloydMayweather, I believe that."

Mayweather hasn't lost in 47 fights. Pacquiao is 57-5-2 in his career. He has been in Miami for several days because he was judging the Miss Universe competition.

TFC@theMovies Brings "Praybeyt Benjamin" in North America Theaters

The Filipino Channel (TFC) Press Release

When gay soldier character Benjamin “Benjie” Santos VIII, played by host-actor-singer Vice Ganda, first came into public conciousness in 2011 by way of ABS-CBN Star Cinema’s action-comedy, “The Unkabogable: Praybeyt Benjamin”, the character became an icon for unlikely heroes and the film became the first in Philippine cinema history to break the P300 million mark.

The good news is that Benjamin is back and so is the team of Vice Ganda and director-writer Wenn V. Deramas to give life and zest to the sequel, The Amazing Praybeyt Benjamin, the box-office toast of the recently held 40th Metro Manila Film Festival.  Again, the dynamic artist-director duo wove magic at the box office, this time breaking all Philippine records by grossing Php435 million as of January 14, 2015.

TFC@theMovies happily brings this comedy treasure to North America starting January 30, and will screen in over 40 theaters in U.S. and in Canada.

In The Amazing Praybeyt Benjamin, after defeating terrorists and saving the world from a zombie attack, Praybeyt Benjamin is promoted to colonel and has become an international superstar.  Once simple and humble, he allows success to get into his head.  After making a fatal mistake in one mission by disobeying his new commanding officer General Wilson Chua (played by Richard Yap), Benjamin is subjected to disciplinary action.  He is given a new mission: gain the confidence of General Chua’s brat kid, Bimbee (played by James “Bimby” Aquino-Yap) and extract from the General’s estranged child information on the secret locations of three active terrorist bombs planted in the country. It doesn’t help that in trying to do so, Benjamin finds himself frequently clashing with pesky housemaid Gundina (played by Alex Gonzaga).  And, of course, there is handsome villain Janjaranjan (played by Tom Rodriguez) to contend with.

The team behind The Amazing Praybeyt Benjamin has one mission and that is to make you laugh. They made box-office history doing exactly that,” said ABS-CBN Global Head of Theatricals John D-Lazatin. “The cast is comprised of masters of comedy – from the material, to their timing, to their chemistry with one another, and to their genuine desire to entertain the audience with their talents.  It is that unpretentious singularity of intention and focus that makes watching The Amazing Praybeyt Benjamin so much fun.  We want to bring that unique brand of Filipino fun to movie audiences here in North America.”

Completing the cast are Eddie Garcia, Al Tantay, Vandolph Quizon, Nikki Valdez, Kean Cipriano, Anja Aguilar, DJ Durano, Ricky Rivero, Dennis Padilla, Malou de Guzman, Abby Bautista, Rhed Bustamante and delightful surprise appearances by famous celebrities.

Broken-hearted? Can't move on? May pinaghuhugutan? Here's One Sure Way to Help You Find a New Love, Life

That Thing Called Tadhana, Star Cinema Press Release

Anyone who has ever experienced being reminded of someone by everyday things such as food, a smell, a song, a sight - despite great effort to forget - will find "That Thing Called Tadhana" painfully familiar and somehow, freeing.

This was the promise of director and writer Antoinette Jadaone to moviegoers who will finally get to watch the romantic-comedy, three months after its initial limited release as part of the 2014 Cinema One Originals Film Festival.

The film about moving on from a failed relationship, which won the Audience Choice Award and Best Actress for Angelica Panganiban, has been picked up by Star Cinema for a wide-scale release on February 4.

"Maraming hugot lines sa pelikula, maraming makaka-relate kasi parang halos lahat naman dumating sa stage na hindi maka-move on," said Jadaone during a recent press conference. "'Yung buong movie, tungkol siya sa tamang pag-move on. Tutulungan ka niya kung paano mag-move on at makalimot."

"That Thing Called Tadhana" follows two strangers, Mace (Panganiban) and Anthony (JM de Guzman), whose chance encounter at an airport in Rome, Italy leads them to a road trip in Luzon. Heartbroken over the end of her eight-year relationship, Mace enlists the help of Anthony to help her move on.

Over the weeks since its limited release in November, the film has become a viral hit on Facebook where producers post so-called "hugot" lines from the conversations of Mace and Anthony.

The relatable excerpts have garnered thousands of likes, drumming up anticipation for a large-scale release of "That Thing Called Tadhana." Here are some examples:

Relatable Mace

In one scene, Mace offers to pay Anthony a certain amount every time she mentions her ex-boyfriend, who she insists looks like TV idol John Lloyd Cruz (Panganiban's real-life partner).

However, the task is easier said than done. Smallest details or mention of names prompt Mace to remember the relationship, from ketchup (her ex often pairs it with hotdog), Cebu (Valentine's Day 2010), Hong Kong (2008), spaghetti (censored), to malunggay leaves (malunggay pandesal, his favorite).

An anguished Mace later tells Anthony, referring to her ex-boyfriend: "'Hindi na kita mahal. Makakaalis ka na.' Seven words? Walong taon tapos seven words lang kaya niyang ibigay? 'T*** *** naman, sabihin naman niya kung bakit, ano'ng ginawa ko!"

Mace, to most, may sound like a familiar character - a friend who needed consoling, a brother who turned to alcohol after a breakup, or a reflection of oneself upon the realization of a crumbling relationship.

Here's why, in Jadaone's words: "I drew inspiration for the film from] my own experience and experiences ng mga friends ko, friends ng friends ko. Kumbaga, pinool ko 'yung lahat ng mga kwento ng pag-mo-move on at pag-iyak at nilagay ko sila sa isang buong pelikula."

From mockumentary to 'hugot film'

Jadaone made her directorial debut in 2011 with the acclaimed mockumentary "Six Degrees of Separation from Lilia Cuntapay." Just recently, she had a streak of projects making it to the big screen within months of each other.

"Ekstra," which she co-wrote, competed in Cinemalaya in 2013. This was followed by three movies last year - "Relaks, It's Just Pag-Ibig" (director), "Beauty in a Bottle" (director and writer), and the award-winning "English Only, Please" (writer).

Of her film projects so far, Jadaone considers "That Thing Called Tadhana" closest to her heart. "Baby ko siya, eh. Ito po 'yung favorite ko sa mga ginawa ko," she said.

"Noong kinuha siya ng Star Cinema for distribution, doon pa lang sobrang happy na ako. Parang, okay na ako na mapanood ng mga tao, na may chance na ang mga tao mapanood siya... Doon pa lang nabuo ko 'yung dream film ko, okay na ako doon," she said.

Where do broken hearts go?

Before landing a deal with the ABS-CBN film outfit, Jadaone and her team hit a road block in the production of "That Thing Called Tadhana." With only weeks away from the Cinema One Originals opening, Jadaone belatedly got word that the foreign publishers of Whitney Houston's "Where Do Broken Hearts Go," a song prominently featured in the film, is charging them $5,000 or around P220,000.

As a competing entry in the film festival, the project had already used up its awarded P2-million budget at the time. Jadaone turned to Facebook to ask for the support of friends and fans, and managed to raise just enough for the licensed use of the well-loved tune.

Those who pitched in P500 each found their names in the film's credits.

Explaining her insistence on using "Where Do Broken Hearts Go," Jadaone said: "Iyong paggamit ko ng kanta dito, from scriptwriting pa lang po, nakalagay na talaga iyon.

Asked to answer the question posed by the song and, by extension, her own film, Jadaone did not seem to think twice about her answer.

"Sa friends po," she said. "Pag broken-hearted ka, ang dami mong kaibigan na [handang dumamay]. Kasi, usually, pag meron kang girlfriend o boyfriend, sobrang saya mo na hindi mo na napapansin na meron kang mga kaibigan na hindi mo na nababati, hindi mo na na-ha-hi man lang. Pero pag broken-hearted ka, doon mo ma-ri-realize na maraming kang kaibigan."

"Where do broken hearts go? Sa friends ko."

Mary Jean Lastimosa Answers Miss Universe 2014 Final Question

In case she made it to the Final 5 of the Miss Universe 2014 pageant, how do you think Mary Jean Lastimosa would have answered the final question "What is the greatest contribution of your country to the entire world?"

"Actually yung gusto ko talagang isagot diyan, ano... We taught the world the spirit of volunteerism. Kasi ang dami nating pinagdaanan na typhoons. Because of that, na-witness natin yung every nations are helping, helping hand in hand para ma-survive natin yung catastrophe na pinagdaanan natin and with that, we've seen na different cultures, different nations are helping each other. So yung volunteerism talagang, kung ginagawa natin lagi ito sa lahat ng bansa na may pinagdaraanan, walang mahirap," the Philippines bet to the Miss Universe competition said, adding  "Gusto ko talaga...maybe, tell the world how to help each other and you know, be one. For once in our life, let's be one. so, yun. I think that's the biggest contribution ng bansa natin. It may not be any material - alam mo yun, na hindi naman tayo ganun kalaking bansa and very powerful, but I think the spirit of volunteerism is really big."
