Kapuso Stars Receive Warm Welcome in Bacolod's Panaad Festival

Kapuso Stars Receive Warm Welcome in Bacolod's Panaad Festival

An estimated crowd of 15,000 Negrenses were treated to an exciting Kapuso experience via the Panaad Festival: Kapuso Night held recently at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Bacolod City.

Featuring topnotch performances from RnB Princess Kyla and Steven Silva of Party Pilipinas, and Kapuso leading lady Sarah Lahbati (from the upcoming Kapuso primetime offering Makapiling Kang Muli), the event served as the highlight of the Kapuso Network’s participation in this year’s Panaad Festival.

Steven and Sarah, who are both products of GMA’s popular talent reality search Starstruck, surprised the audience with a special duet number. The sizeable crowd went agog as the two artists fueled the “kilig explosion” with their seemingly good rapport.

The excitement reached fever pitch as soon as Kyla took the stage. And the RnB Princess did not disappoint with her impressive song numbers. She also participated in the Kapuso Meet and Greet in SM City Bacolod at 4pm that day.

I feel very touched by the warm welcome extended to us by the Negrenses. It was nice to see them dancing and singing along during my performances. Nakakatuwa sila!” shares Kyla.

It’s my third time here in Bacolod and it feels good to be here again to entertain our Kapuso fans. I hope they’ll continue to support all our shows on GMA. Sana abangan din nila ang mga bago naming programa,” says Sarah.

Steven is also excited about joining the Panaad festivities. “Ang daming tao! I hope they enjoyed celebrating the festival with us and I definitely look forward to seeing them again in our next visit.

Meanwhile, RnB Prince Jay-R of Party Pilipinas and Kapuso heartthrob TJ Trinidad (Makapiling Kang Muli) serenaded the candidates of the “Lin-ay Sang Negros” beauty pageant during its Coronation Night last April 13 at the Panaad Park and Stadium. TJ, together with Bubble Gang's sexy actress Jackie Rice, took centerstage in another fun and exciting Meet and Greet that took place the following day at SM City Bacolod.

The team behind GMA Regional TV was just ecstatic not just with the successful outcome of the events but also with the warm reception they received from the local audience.

By just merely seeing all the smiles in the audience's faces, we know for a fact that all of our hard work and preparations for this year's Panaad Festival surely paid off. We thank all Kapusong Negrenses for welcoming us once again and for continuously making GMA Network number one in their hearts,” says Oliver Amoroso, Assistant Vice President for Sales and Marketing of GMA Regional TV.

On April 29, catch the highlights of the Kapuso celebration of the Panaad Festival via the "Let’s Fiesta" TV Special airing in all eight (8) regional stations of GMA Network in Davao, CDO, GenSan, Dagupan, Cebu, Iloilo, Naga, and Bacolod.

Animation Directors Return with R13-Rated “21 Jump Street”

Animation Directors Return with R13-Rated “21 Jump Street”

Columbia Pictures wanted a fresh take for its new action-comedy “21 Jump Street,' so an intense search was held for a director that could make the new vision pop on the screen. They got two for the price of one: Phil Lord & Christopher Miller, who had previously helmed the acclaimed animated hit “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.”

Could the directors of a family friendly animated film possibly be the right choice for this R-rated live-action action-comedy? “We felt like we wanted to do something that was the exact opposite of what we had just done – although, to be fair, `Cloudy' is an action comedy, just geared to a different audience. Still, we had a lot to prove,” Miller explains. “So we made a whole presentation that showed what we would do. We knew we had to do a little razzle-dazzle.

Whatever skepticism the producers may have had was washed away by the meeting. “When they came in, they were incredibly prepared,” says producer Tania Landau. “They had a PowerPoint presentation. They had created a book with every point of the movie and how it should look. I was blown away. The guys were so creative and enthusiastic – we were all in sync.

One of the reasons that Lord and Miller were so excited by the material was that they wouldn’t just be directing the movie – they would be living out the themes of the story. “When I was growing up, I watched ‘Jump Street’ because the cute girls in my high school were watching it – I wanted to be up on the storylines. So, this project is like coming full circle – I become a cool person by making this movie,” says Lord.

In “21 Jump Street,” Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Jenko (Channing Tatum) were enemies in high school who became unlikely friends in Police Academy. While they may not be the best cops on the beat, they have a chance to turn it around when they join the police department's secret Jump Street unit, run by Captain Dickson (Ice Cube). They trade in their guns and badges for backpacks and use their youthful appearances to go undercover.

With Hill’s comic sense under Lord and Miller’s direction, combined with producer Neal H. Moritz’ action chops, the project had the perfect mix of talent. “You have Neal Moritz’s `Fast and Furious' action side, and Jonah Hill style comedy,” says Miller. “Those things combine, explode, and recombine their atoms to make the perfectly formed movie.

Neal has produced lots of great and successful action movies,” says Hill. “So I felt that he would be a great partner in making this because I have made a lot of comedies and he has made a lot of action movies and together we could hopefully make a great action comedy."

Every time I do an action movie, I feel like we have to top the last one,” says Moritz. “But it’s not about bigger explosions or bigger car crashes – that doesn’t work. The action has to be character-based, it has to be something you haven’t seen before. For `21 Jump Street,' because it’s an action comedy, we tried to have the action be clever and humorous, to really come out of the characters and their relationships.”

Opening across the Philippines in May, “21 Jump Street” will be distributed in the Philippines by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International. GMA Network's President Gilberto Duavit Clarifies PhilStar Article Regarding GMA's Sale to Manny V. Pangilinan

GMA Network's President Gilberto Duavit Clarifies PhilStar Article Regarding GMA's Sale to Manny V. Pangilinan

GMA Network releases a statement clarifying Philippine Star's article about the rumored buy-out agreement between GMA Network and MVP Group of Companies.

The press release reads:

GMA Network President and Chief Operating Officer Gilberto R. Duavit, Jr. clarified certain points raised in a news article by Mary Ann Ll. Reyes published in the Philippine Star last April 14 headlined “MVP offers up to P45 B for GMA Network.”

Duavit said that it is not true that two out of the three major stockholders of GMA “are already amenable to selling their respective 33-percent stake.”

He added that the major and controlling shareholders have not yet received a price that is acceptable to them. “We are presently not in serious negotiations with the PLDT group as we have not yet received an offer price that is acceptable to us. The Network is not for sale but that is not to say it may not be sold, depending on the offer price,” Duavit reiterated.

Duavit also clarified that the sale of GMA to the PLDT group nearly occurred in 2001 with the signing of a Memorandum Of Understanding between the owners and the said group. He mentioned that there were agreements already reached then among the owners on both pricing and a sale of a majority stake, contrary to the news article. The transaction, however, did not materialize due to issues encountered by the buyer, and not because of a disagreement on the indicated P14 billion price.

DZMM Teleradyo, Trailblazing on its 5th Year

DZMM Teleradyo, Trailblazing on its 5th Year

In the olden days, it may have been unthinkable for a teleradyo channel to mount a live and uninterrupted coverage of a national event like the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona, but with DZMM TeleRadyo’s willingness to embrace change, it’s all happening.

DZMM TeleRadyo’s coverage of the impeachment trial is the first of its kind, with no other radio-television channel ever mounting a project of this nature and with such scale and extent in the history of radio.

With its masterful utilization of the technologies it has learned and gathered over the years, DZMM TeleRadyo is able to deliver timely and important updates on the proceedings of the case, both from the Senate and the studio.

This is a long way from the beginnings of DZMM TeleRadyo, now celebrating its fifth anniversary. But as the case may be, it is not far removed from the vision with which it was established in 2007. In fact, it is in keeping with the forward-thinking virtue that ABS-CBN head of Manila Radio Division Peter Musngi spoke of in its early days. “Radio must continue to evolve,” he said.

In its inaugural year, it was the first media outfit to break the news about the fatal bombing in Glorietta, using no less than one of the key features proposed during the channel’s inception, the 3G mobile phone technology. DZMM TeleRadyo beat all other TV news groups in breaking the first footage from the scene. The decision to have its DZMM Radyo Patrol reporters use 3G mobile phones and do live video reports paid off.

But DZMM TeleRadyo owes its success as much to its willingness to embrace change as to its celebration of tradition. But it is thoroughly hinged on the tenet that it should remain faithful to the nature and characteristic of radio.

Being a trailblazer that pioneered several firsts and imitated by other stations, DZMM TeleRadyo has made its mark as the leading news and information cable TV news and commentary channel in thePhilippinesthat has attracted viewers across socioeconomic class with its programming appealing to the AB and the CD markets.

Viewers still get to enrich their opinion on important and pressing matters by staying tuned to the elaborate discussions typical of what they are used to hearing on DZMM. Two of the most prominent and respected TV and radio personalities, ‘Kabayan’ Noli de Castro and Ted Failon, go on board on weekdays to tackle the biggest issues of the land via news, commentary and public service in “Kabayan” and “Failon Ngayon”. The two veteran broadcasters are heard and seen together on “Radyo Patrol Bailta.”

Entrepreneurs, too, can receive vital information that can help them with their business or investments such as foreign exchange rates, which are flashed on the screen. But an interesting element perhaps is the candidness on radio that is somehow carried over to DZMM TeleRadyo.

The marriage of technological advancement and tradition has kept DZMM TeleRadyo ahead and, at the same time, firmly established in the industry, as attested by the many awards it has been accorded over the five years it has been on air.

Most recent in this lengthening list of awards are Finalist for Best Special Event Coverage for “DZMM Halalan 2010: Ang Bayan Naman” under the TV category given during the 33rd Catholic Mass Media Awards, the International Association of Business Communicators Philippines’ Philippine Quill Awards and Public Relations Society of the Philippines’ Anvil Awards for successfully expanding its viewership, introducing innovative approaches, and increasing its revenues.

True to its adherence to the sensibilities of radio, DZMM TeleRadyo recently brought back radio personalities that were held dear by listeners. In January, veteran broadcaster Korina Sanchez, who is perhaps best known on radio for her tandem with seasoned broadcast journalist Ted Faillon on “Tambalang Failon at Sanchez,” made a comeback with “Rated Korina,” a magazine program partly inspired by her long-running ABS-CBN program “Rated K”.

In November 2011, popular radio love guru Joe D’ Mango re-launched his much-loved program “Joe D’ Mango’s Love Notes,” but this time to a wider audience via DZMM TeleRadyo.

DZMM TeleRadyo also made a landmark in its broadcasting history when it started airing ABS-CBN’s late night current affairs program in its 9:15 pm weeknight timeblock last year.

With all its achievements, DZMM TeleRadyo has indeed broken boundaries and reached heights previously unknown in the industry. But what’s truly remarkable is that in its quest for change, it has remained loyal to the essence of radio and is careful not to leave its listeners behind. In fact, DZMM Teleradyo has taken them along in the evolution.

ABS-CBN Nets P2.4 Billion in 2011

ABS-CBN Nets P2.4 Billion in 2011

The consolidated net income of ABS-CBN Corporation, the country’s largest multimedia conglomerate, registered P2.4 billion for the full year 2011.

ABS-CBN generated consolidated revenues of P28.2 billion from advertising and consumer sales, a 13% decline compared to 2010. Less the revenues from political advocacies and advertisements in 2010, consolidated revenues for 2011 declined by 4% year-on-year.

ABS-CBN’s advertising revenues reached P17.6 billion, a decline of 19% from a year ago. Minus the revenues from political advocacies and advertisements in 2010, advertising revenues declined by 6% year-on-year. This decrease is attributable to a slowdown in advertising spending by corporates.

Consumer sales for 2011 amounted to P10.6 billion, posting a 1% increase from a year ago. Sky Cable continues to contribute positively with revenues increasing by 10% to P4.3 billion. This is mostly driven by the increased take up of its broadband service subscriptions which increased by 18% year-on-year. However, ABS-CBN Global revenues declined by 8% year on year in peso terms due to the decline in subscribers and the appreciation of the Philippine peso against the US dollar. ABS-CBN Global’s overall viewer count was almost flat compared to the previous year. There was subscriber growth in Canada, Asia-Pacific and Australia, while there were declines in the Middle East, Europe, North America and Japan.

Total operating and other expenses dropped by P1.1 billion or 5% year-on-year to P22.3 billion. This was partly a result of lower cost of sales and services and general and administrative expenses (GAEX) as the company continued its effort to manage and control expenses. The decline in both expense accounts partly offset the increase in total production costs due to the Company’s drive to produce quality and innovative programs.

Net income attributable to shareholders is at P2.4 billion, aided by a gain on sale of Sky Cable Philippine Depositary Receipts (PDRs) to the Singaporean company, STT Communications Ltd. Meanwhile, earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) hit P6.8 billion.

Capital expenditure and film and program rights acquisition for the year amounted to P4.2 billion, 14% higher than the level of spending from the previous year. Additional equipment was purchased to increase the company’s capacity to produce additional new programs.

ABS-CBN maintained its national audience share and ratings leadership with prime-time audience share averaging 43% , with a 13 percentage point lead over GMA’s, based on the Kantar National TV Ratings figure.

For the full year 2011, twenty one of the company’s shows were in the Top 20, with the following occupying the Top 18 slots: Emil Cruz Jr.’s Mara Clara, 100 Days to Heaven, PabloS. Gomez’s Mutya, Minsan Lang Kita Iibigin, Ikaw ay Pag-ibig, Budoy, Maalaala Mo Kaya…, Noah, Pilipinas Got Talent (Sun), TV Patrol, Guns and Roses, Pilipinas Got Talent (Sat), My Binondo Girl, Imortal, Rated K Handa Na Ba Kayo?,Junior Master Chef Pinoy Edition (Sat), Wansapanataym, Nasaan Ka Elisa?, and Maria La Del Barrio

ABS-CBN Film Productions, Inc. released sixteen films in 2011. Five of them–Ang Tanging Ina Mo Last Na To, Dalaw, Catch Me I’m in Love, In The Name of Love, No Other Woman and Praybeyt Benjamin–topped P100 million in box office receipts, earning blockbuster status by local standards. No Other Woman, a co-production with Viva Films, grossed P282 million, while Praybeyt Benjamin, also a co-production with Viva, grossed P342 million.
