American Made Movie Review: Entertaining True Story Of A Double-Dealing Pilot Who Works For The CIA And Also Smuggles Cocaine For Colombian Drug Lords

JUST LIKE in his first big mammoth hit, "Top Gun", Tom Cruise once again plays another pilot in "American Made", based on the true story of Barry Seal, an airline pilot who smuggles illegal cigars to the States and is later recruited by the CIA to do some gun-running for them. Still later, he is also used by Colombian drug lords to do drug-trafficking for them.

Tom Cruise himself narrates the story of the double-dealing pilot set in the late 70s and early 80s, based on the videotapes left behind by Seal where he recorded his own misadventures. He was first hired by a CIA contact named Schafer (Domhnall Gleeson) to fly a spy plane over Central America so he can do aerial surveillance and take secret photographs of rebel camps and stations in different Latin American countries.

His exploits call the attention of the drug lords led by Pablo Escobar, who'll eventually form the infamous Medellin Cartel. He agrees to transport the cocaine they produce to Miami. Schafer then gives him new orders: to fly guns to Nicaragua's rebels, called the contras who then give the guns to the Colombians in exchange for drugs that they themselves sell.

This eventually leads to a political scandal that becomes known as the Iran-Contra deal with the Sandinistas during the second term of the late Pres. Ronald Reagan. It is revealed that the U.S. then secretly sells guns to Iran to help finance the contras in Nicaragua.

Seal is basically a good family man, married to the sexy blonde (Sarah Wright) and a doting dad to their several kids, but greed gets the better of him. They originally live in Louisiana but move to Arkansas when the safety of his family gets threatened.

For all his illegal work, Seal earned millions upon millions of dollars. At one point, the bank in the small town of Mena in Arkansas has to give him their own vault to keep his stash and he also starts burying the dollars he has amassed under the ground since his cabinets are already bursting to the seams stuffed with the green bucks he keeps in them.

Tom Cruise takes on the role with a mischievous grin that often shows him flashing his teeth, flying high with his aviator shades and generally playing it with alacrity, even displaying his bare butt in a couple of scenes. The film shows some real political personalities, like Pres. Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan, along with First Lady Nancy Reagan and her famous "Just Say No" speech against drugs, Bill Clinton as then governor of Arkansas, Gen. Manuel Noriega of Panama and Lt. Col. Oliver North of the Iran-Contra affair.

The film is directed by Doug Liman, who did "Bourne Identity" and "Mr. & Mrs Smith", and also helmed Tom Cruise in "Edge of Tomorrow". He did well in portraying the Cold War politics of that era where the U.S. meddles with foreign policy, but with a lightweight touch, like a scene showing Tom Cruise fleeing from a plane crash using the bicycle of a child who he bribes.

There's also a terrific scene where various government agencies like the CIA, FBI, DEA and others, all converge in one place with the same intentions of arresting Seal. Compared to Tom's last movie, the boring new version of "The Mummy", the snappily edited "American Made" is definitely much more engaging and entertaining to watch.

Kim Domingo On Why She's Called Asia's Fantasy, Happy To Work With Marian Rivera In 'Super Ma'am' On GMA Telebabad

KIM DOMINGO is introduced in the presscon of "Super Ma'am" as Asia's Fantasy. We ask her if she's comfortable with such a big title and she says she doesn't know how she was proclaimed as Asia's Fantasy.

"Okay na ko doon sa dating tawag nilang Pantasya ng Bayan," she says. "Kaya nagulat din ako nang ipakilala nila akong Asia's Fantasy nang isa-isang ipakilala sa press ang buong cast. Naisip ko, baka dahil doon sa appearance ko sa Thailand for youtube na nag-trending talaga nang husto. May event kasi doon na na-invite ako, called Viralfest. Ang mga dumalo, yung maraming hits sa youtube. Pinagkaguluhan talaga ako at ang dami palang nakapanood sa videos ko that we uploaded before pa. Dahil doon, nagkaroon ako ng offer to do endorsements there. Lahat ng videos ko kasi sa youtube, sobrang dami ng hits na nakukuha."

We're sure her haters will bash her for claiming she's Asia's Fantasy. "Naku, okay lang, sanay na ako sa kanila. May isang bashers na sabi sa'kin, wala akong utak, walang talent, puro boobs lang. I felt so hurt kasi that basher doesn't know how hard I work to improve my craft, so sinagot ko siya, pumatol ako, sabi ko, at least, ang boobs ko pa lang, milyon na ang kinita. Napahiya yata, hindi na sumagot."

She's happy to be part of "Super Ma'am". "Unang-una, pambata ito kasi superhero si Ate Marian Rivera, so mapapanood ako ng child viewers. Second, makakasama ko nga si Ate Marian and I'm so honored and flattered na siya raw mismo ang pumili sa akin para mapasama ako rito. Maganda yung role ko as Mabelle, her sister, na later on, magiging si Avenir."

What happened? Why is there a change in her name? Later on, magiging magkalaban kami ni Ate Marian, without us knowing na magkapatid pala kami."

So how is it working with Marian? "Okay na okay siya. First day pa lang namin, naging comfortable agad ako sa kanya kasi she's very sweet, thoughtful. I'm looking forward to being closer to her in the days to come kapag dumalas na ang pagsasama namin sa taping. Sana makabuo talaga kami ng isang magandang friendship sa show na ito."

For her role, she trained in mixed martial arts. "Marami kasi akong action scenes na gagawin. And I'm glad di ko kailangang maghubad dito. Ang goal ko kasi talaga is to eventually makakawala ako sa aking sexy image at mas makilala bilang mahusay na actress. Si Tita Jaclyn Jose ang peg ko.
Nakasama ko siya sa last show ko, 'D'Originals', at sinabi niyang nag-umpisa rin siya sa sexy roles. Pero nakatawid siya at, ngayon, respected actress na siyang nananalo ng acting awards hindi lang dito kundi pati sa abroad."

This year is turning out to be a good one for her. "'Super Ma'am' is my third regular show after 'Juan Happy Love Story' and 'D'Originals'. Nakagawa pa ko ng movie, 'Mang Kepweng', and I'm doing another one. Kasama rin ako sa 'Barbie, Wonder Beki' ni Paolo Ballesteros."

"Super Ma'am" will be shown starting tonight right after "24 Oras" around 8 PM, so kid viewers who are sure to love its story about a superhero teacher will still be very much awake to watch it. "Alyas Robin Hood" starring Dingdong Dantes will follow it, and after that, "My Korean Jagiya" with Heart Evangelista will round up GMA Telebabad's programming from Monday to Friday night primetime.

????????? ????????/MAGPAHANGGANG-WAKAS on 31Kanal Kazakhstan

Magpahanggang-Wakas might have been unceremoniously taken prematurely off the air in Indonesia but it has become the savior of ABS-CBN's puri in the light of the steady international resurgence of new GMA teleseryes from Africa to Asia to South America. This Arci Muñoz-Jericho Rosales starrer is the only 2017-produced ABS-CBN teleserye to be sold this year internationally. After its hasty disappearance from Indonesian small screens, it emerged thankfully in Africa (there is a deluge of other ABS-CBN teleseryes in Africa- in fact, Pinoy teleseryes are dominant there now-  but they are mostly reruns of older successful teleseryes like Pangako Sa Yo, Dolce Amore, Doble Kara, etc. GMA teleseryes being shown there, just like everywhere else,  are newer).

There must be a tidal wave of gasps of relief at ABS-CBN nowadays. The dominating GMA international profile must have kept them at edge through most of the year. I could imagine the gigantic whoops of joy. They were able to sell it to Kazakhstan too!

Lucky Kazakhs, they will still get to watch the formerly beautiful sexy face of Arci Muñoz. They might not recognize her the next time.

10 PM Kazakh time, Monday to Friday. 31Kanal. Dubbed in Kazakh, Subtitles in Russian.
