Miss Universe 2014 winner should've been Miss Jamaica?

Miss Universe 2014 winner crowned: Miss Universe Colombia Paulina Vega won the Miss Universe 2014 title during the pageant's finale held Sunday night, January 25, 2015, in Florida, USA (Monday morning, Jan 26 PH time), beating 87 other Miss Universe candidates, including Miss Universe Philippines Mary Jean Lastimosa who only finished in the Top 10
Paulina Vega now becomes the 1st from Colombia to win Miss Universe in 56 years, and only the 2nd, after Miss Universe 1958 Luz Marina Zuluaga.

Miss Universe 2014 winner is Miss Colombia Paulina Vega

Paulina, who stands 5'9", is a student and a model in Colombia. She just celebrated her 22nd birthday 11 days ago.

It wasn't surprising that she won, 'coz she was a huge favorite by many and even topped most pageant fans' hot picks and predictions. This blog (as well as major beauty pageant sites like Global Beauties and Missosology) has predicted her to win Miss Universe 2014, and it happened (though she wasn't particularly good during the Q&A).

Majority of the crowd at the pageant venue wanted Miss Jamaica Kaci Fennell to win the title, and so they "booed" the results the moment she was called as 4th Runner Up, or only in 5th Place.

Miss Jamaica was such a stunning lady, very classy and answered great in the Q&A portion. She should have placed higher than 4th Runner Up, or as the FIU Arena crowd wanted: she also deserved to win.

On this video by ThePageantGuy, you can hear the crowd chanting 'Jamaica' and many candidates rushed to Miss Jamaica as if she's the winner:

I think the crowd based it on the Top 5 finalists' answers during the Q&A, when in fact it's just a portion of the total scores of the candidates. Last year's Miss Universe, Gabriela Isler, also didn't have the most impressive answer, yet she won the crown.

THE FINAL AND OFFICIAL RESULTS:

Miss Universe 2014 - Colombia, Paulina Vega
1st Runner Up - USA, Nia Sanchez
2nd Runner Up - Ukraine, Diana Harkusha
3rd Runner Up - Netherlands, Yasmin Verheijen
4th Runner Up - Jamaica, Kaci Fennell

Top 10:
Spain, Desirée Cordero
Philippines, Mary Jean Lastimosa
Venezuela, Migbelis Lynette Castellanos
Argentina, Valentina Ferrer
Australia, Tegan Martin

Top 15:
India, Noyonita Lodh
Brazil, Melissa Gurgel
Indonesia, Elvira Devinamira
France, Camille Cerf
Italy, Valentina Bonariva

Special Awards:
Best National Costume - Indonesia, Elvira Devinamira
Miss Photogenic - Puerto Rico, Gabriela Berrios
Miss Congeniality - Nigeria, Queen Celestine Mykiru.ph

Binibining Pilipinas Chairperson Stella Araneta on Pinoy Designers: "They're no good for candidates."

Binibining Pilipinas Chairperson Stella Araneta, who often received an online attack whenever the Philippines' representatives to an international beauty competitions failed to bring home the crown,   spoke on the reason why she always prefer to export a gown from her native land Colombia instead of tapping our local designers.

Miss World 1993 2nd Runner-up Ruffa Gutierrez said that it is about time the beauty queens wear more Filipino creations.

Hopefully they will start using Filipino-made gowns and national costumes. Kasi all our designers are talented, more talented than the other designers from all over the world."

On Instagram, designer Cary Santiago also expressed his sentiments that Araneta should use more Filipino designers for international pageants.

Just my two cents: Seeing MJ competing for the title makes me feel proud. But my sentiment is this, anyone sent for global competition should also wear a Filipino designer. Where is our pride when what we see on stage is totally not a filipino costume? I know that my gown are not even pageant-fit coz that's not my forte but we have a lot of insanely talented filipino designers who can do way better than what Barraza can do. Madam Stella should at least try and check on the local creations that we have in the country coz after all, the contestant is  representing Philippines and not Colombia."

Meanwhile, Cathy Binag a stylist and CEO of Style and Design Academy Manila said Araneta should give Filipino designers a chance to dress the Bb. Pilipinas representatives in future pageants.
We join in the call, and the challenge, for BPCI and Stella Araneta to allow Filipino designer dress beauty queens under its franchise. These beautiful and intelligent women deserve only the best and they can only get this from our local talents. And to echo Cary Santiago, these contestants are, after all, representatives of the Philippines – not Colombia."

However, Mrs. Araneta explained that while she is open to using more creations by Filipino designers, they are not good enough for our Filipina beauties.

"If I didn't use creations of Filipino designers for several years is because the designs that were given to us were not good enough for our candidates.” Araneta explained, adding that she has been using the work of Colombian designer Alfredo Barraza since Miriam Quiambao placed 1st runner-up in Miss Universe 1999.

In the recently concluded Miss Universe competition, Filipino beauty pageant analysts blamed Mary Jean Lastimosa's inability to enter reach the Final 5 spot of the competition to the designs of her gowns - one that looks like a piece of a wedding cake and the other - a wedding gown.

Get Ready as "Comet" Set to Hit the Philippines this February

Solar Pictures Press Release

Following the success of the Adam Levine - Kiera Knightley starrer Begin Again, Solar Pictures brings to local cinemas “COMET” - a cosmic love story that is sure to leave audiences with that warm February feeling.

“Comet,” stars Golden Globe nominee Emmy Rossum (“The Day After Tomorrow,” “The Phantom of the Opera,” “Mystic River”) and Justin Long (“Live Free or Die Hard,” “He’s Just Not That Into You”).

“Comet” is an original modern love story that follows Kimberly (Rossum) and Dell (Long), who first meet at the Hollywood cemetery where they’ve both come to watch a meteor shower.

Kimberly is brilliant and beautiful; Dell is nerdy and pessimistic, but with an incredibly sharp mind and direct manner. While she and he are not a natural pair, they are cosmically drawn to each other and, under a night sky, luminous with falling stars, they begin their epic love story.

As the opening title card states the events “take place over six years (a few parallel universes over).”

But what starts as a typical romance quickly turns dreamlike as viewers leap back and forth in time, examining their eventual six-year relationship through the lens of their meeting and four other pivotal moments: a monumental fight at a friend’s wedding in Paris; a break up conversation after Dell has moved to New York; a reconnection on a train ride along the California coast; and finally, when Dell pops in on Kimberly unexpectedly in her home in the Hollywood Hills.

The leaps between these moments are seamlessly woven together to create a sense that this love story transcends time and space and that Kimberly and Dell are destined to be together, if not in this universe, then maybe the next.

Content Media introduced and screened the film to international distributors for the first time at the 2014 American Film Market (AFM) last November and was then picked up by Solar Pictures, among other films.

“The universal theme and inventive storytelling in ‘Comet’ have us believing that audiences will really connect with the film,” said Content Media President of Film Jamie Carmichael. “We were drawn in immediately and are happy to have this film…

COMET opens in cinemas nationwide on February 25, 2014 and is released by Solar Pictures.

Jennifer Lopez New Boytoy Ryan Guzman is "The Boy Next Door"

United International Pictures Press Release

Ryan Guzman, who is best known for his roles in the hugely successful “Step Up” film series, plays the titular character of Noah, the 19-year-old who’s as charming as he is evil, in Universal Pictures' erotic thriller “The Boy Next Door.” In the film, Noah’s fatal attraction to his high school teacher Claire (Jennifer Lopez) will force the latter to her limits as she protects her world from being torn apart and her family from a psychotic danger.

During the audition process for the part, Guzman learned from his manager that Lopez wanted him to participate in a table read. He laughs: “When I was told that she wanted me to come in, I thought it was a prank. But they assured me it was real, so I read the script. I loved the character because Noah was so dark and completely different from anything I’d ever done.

Director Rob Cohen (“The Fast and the Furious”) shares what drew him to Guzman for the role: “We had a cold reading of the script one Tuesday night at Jennifer’s, and the first guy who walks in was Ryan. We were amazed, but he was the first actor so we thought, ‘He’s great, but let’s see who else is out there.’ We read about 150 other young actors, but we finally got to the point where we realized that the best guy we had seen was Ryan.

Lopez adds that she appreciated the honesty of his performance: “We knew that it was such a challenging role for any young actor, but Ryan came in and right away showed us he knew what he had to do to play this character. We did make him read several times, because going from the boy next door to a sociopath is no small feat for an actor of any age or experience.”

As it turns out, Guzman connected with both sides of his character. He elaborates: “We’ve all been there with our first loves, where we didn’t know how to handle the love or how to interpret what the new feelings were. This was an opportunity for me to experience that again, and obviously show a dark side that I’ve never shown anybody. That was the attraction to the whole character, demonstrating that I could be a bad guy.

Getting into the character of Noah required intimate and lengthy dialogue between Guzman and Cohen. Cohen shares: “We talked a lot about what is the meaning of obsession, what happens when you’re obsessed. We discussed the trigger mechanisms and how the obsession has nothing to do with the target of your obsession, and it becomes a horrible round-robin of need and want and self-loathing and punishment and anger at the object of your love for not giving you what you want. So we built it up, scene by scene. I drew him a chart that showed levels of intensity where the mania was starting to happen…and where it had clearly become a departure from reality.

Cohen knew that Lopez was the perfect partner to help Guzman discover Noah. Of his star and producer, he commends: “Jennifer is a totally open partner in achieving a scene or moment. She is so good at carving out moments and communicating her emotions without it being a wholly intellectual thing; it’s just natural. It’s hard not to love Jennifer.

Guzman concurs with Cohen’s assessment of Lopez: “At the beginning of filming, I was nervous. Of course I knew I was going to have incredibly intimate scenes with Jennifer, and I was still unsure of how to play it. But as soon as we got going, I felt at ease. I learned so much just from watching her work. We worked incredibly well together to make the story line as good as it could possibly be.”

Opening across the Philippines on January 28, “The Boy Next Door” is distributed by United International Pictures through Columbia Pictures.

Mary Jean Lastimosa fails, Manny Pacquiao 'makes it' to Miss Universe 2014-2015 Top 5

Mary Jean Lastimosa did not make it to Miss Universe 2014 Top 5. But Manny Pacquiao did!!!

Despite Manny Pacquiao sitting as among the judges, Miss Philippines Mary Jean Lastimosa was unable to reach Top 5 and continue the Philippines' 4-year streak of being part of the final 5 girls (and the blaming game might start very soon. Be ready for it.) In the past 4 years: Venus Raj, Shamcey Supsup, Janine Tugonon and Ariella Arida consecutively finished in the Top 5 or among the runners-up.

But at least, MJ didn't break the semi-final streak for our country in Miss Universe as it's now the 5th consecutive year that the Philippines made it to the semis of the pageant.

Mary Jean Lastimosa during the Top 10 announcement

Mary Jean Lastimosa after she was called to join the Top 15

5 of the Top 15 semi-finalists, including Miss Philippines, during the swimsuit competition

It was a job well done, MJ! And you still made us so proud!

The candidates who made it to the Top 5 were Miss Universe USA Nia Sanchez, Miss Universe Jamaica Kaci Fennell, Miss Universe Netherlands Yasmin Verheijen, Miss Universe Ukraine Diana Harkusha and Miss Universe Colombia Paulina Vega, who was eventually named the winner.

The Miss Universe 2014 official Top 5 finalists

I just don't know if this will make you happy, but it was Manny Pacquiao who made it to the Top 5, yeah, for he was one of the 5 lucky judges who were able to ask a question to the Top 5 finalists.

He had the chance to ask Miss USA with the very difficult question: "If you were given 30 seconds to deliver message to global terrorists, what would you say?"
