Tropical Depression's Papadom passes away

Reggae stalwart Dominic “Papadom” Gamboa has passed away.

Papadom was most known for bringing reggae music into prominence in the 90s through his band Tropical Depression, with songs like “Kapayapaan” and “Bilog na Naman ang Buwan.”

Tropical Depression was part of the “Alert Level” compilation which introduced them along with fellow Club Dredd acts Color It Red, Rizal Underground, and The Breed.

Prior to that Papadom had an extensive stint in the underground circuit as frontman of the second iteration of punk band Betrayed, and eventually the Skavengers (which had musical greats Chikoy Pura and Mally Paraguya among its members).

The cause of Papadom's death was complications due to kidney failure. He was undergoing dialysis when he collapsed, according to former Club Dredd owner Robbie Sunico.

Tomorrow, December 19 would have been his 48th birthday. He left behind his wife and two sons.

Other musicians have gone on to social media to pay their respects:

”Hanggang sa muli Papadom Gamboa, mahal na mahal kita ang aking guro nung nagsisimula pa lamang ako sa eksena.”  - Cookie Chua, Color It Red (via Facebook)

“Naalala ko nung may dala siyang ahas sa NU107 noon. RIP Papa Dom.” - Gelo Lagasca, the Lowtechs (via Facebook)

“Yes it's True....Papadom Gamboa passed away today.....  Rest in Peace kapatid..... kakabigla.” - Myra Ruaro, Brownbeat Allstars (via Facebook)

“R.I.P Papa Dom. hay [hassle].” - Zach Lucero, Imago (via Facebook)

“Heard on FB that Papadom of 'Tropical Depression' has passed away. Love and light!” - Jim Paredes (via Twitter)

Papadom's family has requested for two days of privacy. Details regarding his wake will be announced shortly.

KC Montero, Rhian Ramos call it quits

After almost two years, it’s over between Rhian Ramos and KC Montero.

According to a report published on Philippine Entertainment Portal on Wednesday, December 18, Rhian and KC had a “good breakup,” as the two remain friends.

Rhian said they still see each other regularly, and do not let their  breakup ruin the friendship they have long established.

“We're good enough as friends, and sometimes kasi even if you go through something difficult or as weird as a breakup, ang worth it talaga, yung person. You're gonna really keep the man in your life. That’s why I see him. I wanna keep him in my life, so that’s why we’re still okay,” Rhian said in the interview.

Without disclosing the reason of their split, Rhian revealed it was a mutual decision.

“I'm constantly seeing him right now, so it’s not a sawa problem. It’s just something that we decided together.”

Since there’s “no bad blood” between them, is she open to a possible reconciliation?

“I can’t tell the future. I’m just saying na parang we get along, he’s a good person. I don’t know, I don’t wanna close any doors.”

For now, Rhian wants to “fly solo” for awhile.

Karylle neither confirms nor denies marriage

Is she or is she not tying the knot with her boyfriend, Spongecola’s Yael Yuzon, in March?

Karylle neither confirmed nor denied the issue in an intimate interview for her renewed endorsement of  Fruitas’ The Mango  Farm recently.

All the “It’s Showtime” host said was, “I’m getting married on Thursday, Friday and last Saturday (as the title role in “Cinderella”). Doon muna ako ikakasal.  Kung ako magco-confirm, ako na ang magsusulat.”

Zsa Zsa Padilla’s eldest daughter would rather talk about her long-time advocacies for children as way of paying it forward after going through a “difficult childhood.”

“We can’t have a big party this year (for the children). Simple lang.  We are  gearing towards teaching children how to eat healthier. Next year, my plan is to talk to Maya Kitchen to help us  slowly change the diet of children. Your diet can be yummy but not boring.”

Karylle is delighted  Fruitas sent a cart of healthy fruit juices for the children who watched Cinderella.

“Pumunta sila sa bahay (in San Juan) before I went to Resorts World (venue of “Cindrellla”) para magbigay ng libreng juice.”

Her new business, which she put up in Shoppesville, San Juan, is turning out to be rewarding for Karylle.

“Ang dami nilang concepts. I didn’t appreciate mango as much as my balikbayan friends or lola would.  They would come looking for mangoes for dessert or fruit salad, mangoes for ulam. We had a barkada outing in Subic. Yung iba, kinayod up to the last piece.”

The Mango Farm, she adds, is different from her other business, Centertage, because people just drop by to check the cart.  Centerstage requires making last-minute room reservations, especially for Christmas.

Karyle will be spending Christmas with her dad, dentist Modesto Tatlonghari because her mom is in Las Vegas.

Next year, Karylle’s supposed wedding year, promises to be just as busy.

She will start the year right with her annual Three Kings Party for the orphans of White Cross, San Juan where Yael is free to do his share for the kids.

“By the time January comes along, everyone disappears. The children have separation anxiety.  So we fill up the pantry with stuff.”

Karylle is also releasing her album with a music video to go with it.

“You have to make sure your life is well-balanced: your health, your love life, etc.  You just can’t be successful in one area tapos napapabayaan ang iba.  That’s the secret to a healthy life.”

So, is Karylle tying the knot next year?

Read between the lines and you’ll get the answer, loud and clear.

Derek, Cristine remain friends after breakup

They are not meant to be lovers, but they’re certainly meant to be friends.  That’s what Derek thinks of his relationship with former girlfriend Cristine Reyes, who proved that she has moved on when she played a practical joke on the Kapatid actor.

One day, while on a break from a story conference, Cristine decided to switch to her playful self. She pretended to go out and buy food.

She  promptly returned to find Derek still busy with his spaghetti.  All of a sudden, Derek heard a strange squeaking sound right beside him. Before he knew it, Cristine had thrown what looked like a rat into his spaghetti (it was actually a  toy).

“Nagtatakbo ako. Napahiya ako sa lahat ng tao,” Derek recalls.

Turns out Cristine knew Derek has a phobia for rats.

Derek’s knee jerk was to lash out at Cristine.  But after the smoke finally cleared, he just learned to laugh it off.

“It only shows that our friendship is back to normal,” he told reporters on the set visit of his TV5 romance drama “For Love or Money.”

Besides, he has too many blessings to even think of getting angry or feeling bad.

Movie and TV roles cast him as the man beautiful women fight tooth and nail over  (remember “No Other Woman” with Anne Curtis and Cristine?).  Derek is Edward, the married man Alice Dixson’s character seduces in “For Love or Money.”

The roles are becoming a habit, Derek only hopes people will realize that it’s only make believe.  He’s only playing a character.

Don’t get him wrong.  Derek is not complaining.

“I’m a very happy man.”

He feels so blessed, he decided to share his good fortune to natives of  Palawan where he marked his birthday last December 7.

“May maliit na bahay na ginawa ang mga katutubo don para sa retired kong mga magulang. They want fresh air out of the city. Binigyan ko ng laruan ang mga bata. Yung  mga matatanda binigyan ko ng rosary. Nagpakain ako sa property namin.”

The act of kindness not only made the people he helped feel good, it also made Derek happy.

“Ang  sarap ng feeling when you see those kids with smiles on their faces at masasaya ang mga magulang nila.”

Derek doesn’t stop at admiring the smiles on the Palawenos’ faces. He’s thinking of spending more time with them.

“I’ve seen how happy my dad is with his Palawan project. In this industry, I don’t get to see them much of them. I’m entertaining the thought of doing something else. I am at a point in my life where I’m wondering  where my career will go, what the next chapter in my life will be.”

Derek’s fans need not panic. He just shot a new commercial endorsement and there’s his ongoing TV series with Alice Dixson and Ritz Azul to watch out for.

These should be enough to convince Derek to stay longer in the biz. If not, well, at least, the networks – and the companies who trust in him – tried.

Jason, Melai exchange amusing wedding vows

Jason Francisco and Melai Cantiveros exchanged their vows last December 9 at the Holy Cross Parish in General Santos City.

The couple, who first met at the “Pinoy Big Brother (PBB)” house, was happy to celebrate their special day with family and friends, including Melai’s “Banana Split” costar Ryan Bang, former PBB housemate Paul Jake Castillo and Sarangani Rep. Manny Pacquiao.

Jason and Melai uttered lines from popular songs like Pink’s “Just Give Me a Reason” and “Selena Gomez’s “Love You Like a Love Song” and sent guests laughing.

‘Willing victim’

Melai told Jason, “Right from the start you were a thief, you stole my heart, and I, your willing victim.”

The comedienne promised to be Jason’s best friend and to always love him no matter what happens.

“In this road that we will go through, everything is going through. Many humps, very rough curves and crossroads that we will experience, but no matter what obstacles it may be, at the end of the day, 7:30 p.m., it’s always you and me. I promise to be not just a lawful wife, but your best friend. I may not be able to be the best wife, but I will try my very best to be a best, not a beast mother like my mother to my father, char-char lang. I promise a lifetime of bliss and inner happiness. I love you and I will always will,” Melai said during their exchange of vows, which was aired in “Buzz ng Bayan” on Sunday, December 15.
Jason, on the other hand, told Melai he loves her “like a love song,” a line from Selena Gomez’s hit single. He added that he expects rough times along with happy ones. But he vowed to always be there for her and their future baby.

Jason's wedding vow

“Melissa, you know I love you like a love song baby. I really do. It’s the reason why we are here in church, to share it with our loved ones and our fans and our families. I, Jason Francisco, say this and proud as always that I love you always and soon to our baby that I will give all the best that I could to be a good father and husband to you and your family.  I love you with all of my heart. I love you more and more and more. I love you Melissa Cantiveros. God bless you and to our baby and let’s get loud.”

Jason told “Buzz ng Bayan”  that he composed the vow himself on their wedding day.

“Meron kasi tayong lines sa mga songs na favorite natin. Nakakatouch at very sweet.”

Why did she utter the line “Willing ako magpa-steal sa kanya” from Pink’s song?

“Naiyak ako sa vow. Pinipigilan ko lang kasi baka sabihin ang OA ko. Maganda yung delivery ko kasi sa kanta iyon ng “Just Give Me a Reason.” Nahirapan kami sa English, so dinaan na lang namin sa mga songs,” Melai replied.

The reception was held at Greenleaf Hotel, where Jason and Melai entertained guests with a  dance number. Bugoy Drilon sang “This I Promise You.” Nat Manilag designed the reception dress and suit of Melai and Jason, respectively.

“Mas excited kami sa baby. Kasi yung wedding parang for formality and blessing,” Jason said.

The couple plans to use the money guests gave them for their unborn child.

Christian proud of Rachelle Ann’s Miss Saigon role

Christian Bautista is proud of former girlfriend and fellow Kapuso Rachelle Ann Go, who will play Gigi in West End’s “Miss Saigon” next year.

“I’m very happy na nakuha niya yung role, and sad also na aalis siya. Pero as a friend, kaming lahat, kaming mga Champions (their former group in the noontime show ASAP), full support,” Christian said at the renewal of his contract with Ink All-You-Can on Tuesday, December 10.

Christian shared that if their schedule permits, he and fellow Champions plan to watch Rachelle in London. Rachelle, Christian and Mark Bautista are now with GMA, but they have maintained their friendship with Sarah Geronimo, Erik Santos, Jed Madela and Yeng Constantino who are ABS-CBN talents.

While Christian has performed in international shows and musicals, he feels that he is in no position to advise Rachelle about her “Miss Saigon” stint.

“Advice? Hindi ko alam kasi ngayon mas marami na siyang alam kaysa sa akin. Siya yung naka-meet kay Cameron (Mackintosh). I’m very happy that she’s gonna be there. She’s gonna learn so much. And when she comes back, wow, I would love to learn (from Rachelle).”

Still single

Although he doesn’t have a new relationship, there is no bad blood between Christian and former girlfriend Carla Dunareanu.

“Before we didn’t want to talk about it. But we’re friends. We’re happy.”

Meanwhile, Christian’s “Cinderella” co-star Karylle is rumored to be tying the knot early next year. He admitted that they haven’t talked about the issue yet, but if ever the rumor is true, Christian wishes her the best.

“I wish whatever next year brings will be filled with happiness. And we are here to support you.As a friend, tatanungin ko muna siya, kung totoo iyon, ano ang kakantahin.”

Cristine Reyes Not Bothered By Tags That She's A Bad Girl, A Playgirl

CRISTINE REYES is beaming over the positive feedback she's getting for her portrayal of Jake Cuenca's neglected wife who falls for the charms of married man Gabby Concepcion in "When the Love is Gone". After the preview at Gateway last Friday, writers who've seen it are gushing at not only how sexy she is on screen (especially in her provocative love scenes with Gabby) but also in the dramatic confrontation scenes she had with Alice Dixson as Gabby's wronged wife and Andi Eigenmann as Gabby's angry daughter.
In real life, Cristine is branded as a playgirl because she has had so many boyfriends (Mark Herras, Dennis Trillo, Rayver Cruz, Derek Ramsay among them) but she says she never had simultaneous boyfriends.

"Never ko naman silang pinagsabay-sabay," she protests. "Matatawag lang akong girlfriend kung nakikipag-steady ako sa kanila without breaking up from the previous one. Some people are even calling me a bad girl but my conscience is clear. Minahal ko naman silang lahat. Let's just say na astig kasi ang dating ko. Hindi basta paaagrabiyado kahit kanino."

She's glad that after "Bukas na Lang Kita Mamahalin", she's added into the cast of the ABS-CBN soap, "Honesto", and she now plays a good girl role as a nurse who gets involved with Paulo Avelino and his son, Honesto.

"Wholesome ang show, puede sa bata, wala akong sexy scenes na gaya sa movies na ginagawa ko, kaya siempre, natutuwa ako dahil harmless ang role ko, for a change. Yun namang pagiging daring ko as Gabby's other woman in 'When Love is Gone', it's just a role. At basta I just obeyed ang mga pinagagawa sa akin ni Direk Andoy Ranay in keeping sa character na ginagampanan ko. The sexy scenes are wild, on the edge nga raw, so sige, pagbigyan natin, and I'm glad na lahat ng nakapanood, natutuwa naman sila dahil nabigyan ko ng justice lahat ng mga eksena ko sa movie."

Rayver happy for Matteo's rumored romance with Sarah

Now that his former girlfriend, Sarah Geronimo is being linked to his friend Matteo Guidicelli, Rayver Cruz is actually happy for the Filipino-Italian actor-model.

“Basta kung saan masaya ang bawat isa. Si Matteo, nakikita ko namang masaya siya ngayon, kapag dumadating sa shooting. So, happy ako. Kaibigan ko iyon,” Rayver said at the press conference of Cinema One Originals Currents at the ABS-CBN compound on Tuesday, November 5.

Rayver explained that nothing has changed when it comes to his friendship with Matteo.

“Wala namang epekto sa akin yung mga ganoon. Bago pa man mangyari lahat ng ito, bago pa lumabas yung issues, kaibigan ko na si Matteo.”

He added, "Parehas kaming taga-south. Parehas kami ng trainer, parehas kami ng gym. Lumalabas din kami, kasi magkakaibigan kami. So, hindi makakaapekto sa amin iyon. Sobrang comfortable namin."

On defending Cristine

Rayver defended former girlfriend Cristine Reyes from criticisms she got after her breakup with Derek Ramsay.

"Magkaibigan kami ni AA (Cristine’s nickname) and mabait na tao si Cristine. So, hindi totoo yung mga iyon."

He and Cristine have been sweethearts for a year. And Rayver doesn’t want to get involved in other issues surrounding the break-up.

"Right ko naman iyon na ayaw ko na lang pag-usapan kasi parang binabalik lang ng binabalik. So, para sa akin, hindi na lang ako magsasalita."

Rayver also said that he enjoys being single.

“Mas focused ako sa work and sa mga priorities ko sa buhay."

He also expressed his wish that the Hollywood remake of their movie "OTJ" will push through.

‘The Voice’ winner Mitoy Yonting to join ‘Showtime’

To those asking what’s next for “The Voice of the Philippines” winner Mitoy Yonting, the man with the big voice already has the answer.

The grand champion shared that ABS-CBN is cooking up three TV projects for him —including a sitcom, a Sunday show and a daily gig on “It’s Showtime.”

The Kapamilya noontime show is the archrival of “Eat Bulaga,” the show that gave Mitoy his first TV exposure.

But as far as the 43-year-old singer is concerned, there’s nothing wrong with accepting the noontime show offer—especially since he has “Eat Bulaga” host Vic Sotto’s blessings.

“Personally kinausap ko si Vic Sotto. Nilapitan ko si Bossing. Nagpaalam ako. Siyempre respeto naman ‘yun e ang laki naman ng naitulong sa’kin [ng Eat Bulaga] noong simula e,” he told the media during the launch of SMART Music’s SPINNR.

Mitoy added, “E sabi ko sa kanya, ‘Bossing medyo magkakaroon daw ako ng Showtime.’ Sabi niya, ‘Ok ‘yun!’ Tsaka sitcom, ‘E ‘di ayos!’”

Because the first three of his past TV appearances are on GMA, Mitoy is in effect a Kapuso who has become a Kapamilya.

It will be recalled that after congratulating the former Dabarkads for winning in “The Voice,” veteran host Joey De Leon shared via Twitter that Mitoy appeared with Vic in other  comedy shows, including “Ful Haus” on GMA-7 and “H3O: Ha Ha Ha Over!” on QTV Channel 11 (now GMA News TV).

Although he’s not yet sure whether he’s going to be a co-host or a resident “hurado” (judge) on “It’s Showtime,” Mitoy announced that he’s about to go onboard next month.

“Hindi ko alam kung anong gagawin sa’kin e. Pero ‘yun ang sabi [na makakasama ko.] Kahit na propsman siguro pwede na. (laughs) Malaki naman ang katawan ko e!”

Once a Dabarkad, always a Dabarkad?

The former Draybers band member appreciates the “silent” support he’s getting from “Eat Bulaga.”

“Wala naman kaming masamang tinapay e. Kaya alam kong sinusuportahan nila ko kahit hindi ko nakikita.”

Mitoy shared that he personally thanked Joey at the Aliw Awards ceremony where he (Mitoy) was named Best Male Performer in Hotels, Music Lounges and Bars.

“Napatunayan ko lang na sinusuportahan nila ko nang ipagtanggol na ako ni Sir Joey sa tweets ng mga kumakalaban o mga kumekwestyon. Kaya napatunayan ko nang hindi ako pinabayaan ng dabarkads.”

Meanwhile, apart from P2 million cash, an Asian tour and a brand-new car, Mitoy’s “The Voice” victory entitles him to a four-year recording contract with MCA Music.

And although his first single has yet to be released,  Mitoy’s winning pieces in “The Voice” are now available to the public via MCA Music-SMART Music deal.

Paulo Avelino admits dating KC Concepcion

Now that he and LJ Reyes have broken up, Kapamilya actor Paulo Avelino is giving love another chance.

In an interview with “Buzz ng Bayan” on Sunday, November 3, Paulo revealed that he is dating KC Concepcion, whom he has worked with in the drama anthology "MMK" two years ago.

“Yes, we are dating. (But) I just want to keep things private,” Paulo said.

He assures everyone that he still keeps in touch with his son by LJ.

“Sinisiguro ko na meron akong oras para sa bata. Kapag wala akong ginagawa, I try as much as possible to spend it with him,” Paulo previously told reporters.

KC herself recently made news following her dinner with NBA player Chandler Parsons and some friends during the Houston Rockets and Indiana Pacers pre-season game last October. While KC and Chandler were romantically linked, Paulo wasn’t jealous at all because KC and Chandler are just friends.

“Hindi rin talaga ako seloso. I try to think about things first before I really say anything or bring it out. Nasabi naman niya yung totoo, so wala naman (problema),” the actor said.

KC has been promoting Paulo's teleserye "Honesto" on Twitter.

Rico Blanco: ‘I don’t monopolize the microphone’

An Ati-Atihan in Singapore come November 16? Anything’s possible, especially with Rico Blano channeling his Fiesto Bandido persona when he headlines the Sundown Festival there, along with other acts from 8 Asian countries.

And with Singapore being a melting pot of ethnicities, expect the international music festival to celebrate Asia’s diversity and culture.

When he carries the Philippine flag in this 8-hour, nonstop festival, Rico intends to introduce his latest alter ego for the first time outside of the country.

Designated cheerleader

But it won’t be just about him, even if the former Rivermaya frontman has been called upon to be the designated “cheerleader” of the fiesta.

“When I do a show, a concert, it’s one big fiesta, one big party with everyone in the venue—whether it’s the technician on stage or it’s the audience or it’s the security manning the doors… it’s one big party with them and I want everybody to enjoy. It just happens that I’m the one holding the mic,” he told Yahoo Philippines OMG!.
To cater to non-Filipino audience, Rico turns to his longstanding performance mantra: “I don’t monopolize the microphone. I always enjoy it when I hear the audience singing along. I don’t monopolize the dancing either.”

A mostly Pinoy repertoire

For the last two decades, the 40-year-old musician has churned out hit after great hit including, among others, "Ulan,” "Awit ng Kabataan" Kisapmata” and “Panahon na Naman” with Rivermaya  and “Yugto” and “Your Universe” as a solo artist.

As he pledged to sing more Filipino songs in the festival, the audience can probably expect those classics in his set list.

“We would play mostly English songs and infuse a couple of Filipino songs. But this time around it's a festival to celebrate music from different countries in the region so I will probably (be doing) mostly Filipino songs.”

‘You better be good’

Rico recalls a moment a couple of years back which made him realize why Filipino musicians are among the best in the world.

“I remember being asked by a Thai journalist after playing MTV Asia Awards in Thailand in 2006. I was still with Rivermaya and we performed ‘You'll Be Safe Here.’ Pagbaba ng stage in-interview niya ko; he said he liked the performance. And I said, ‘There's more from where I came from. Visit the Philippines.’”

But for the solo artist, being consistent is a lot of work.

“We try to do our best to uphold that perception. Huwag mapahiya. Pilipino 'to e. Baka nga mas mataas ang expectations nila sa atin. 'Philippines? You better be good!'”

On Asian neighbors

Rico is set to perform with other bands from Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines, the lineup composed of Rocksteddy, Screw, D=OUT, AOA, Bosco Wong, Shao Yu Han, Yoga Lin, Nidji and No More Tear.

Rico is particularly looking forward to meeting Indonesia’s Nidji.

“When we toured Indonesia years back, they were massively popular. And we already did a show in one of the huge universities there. We did a show back-to-back with them. I never met them but they were phenomenal. Everyone was dressed the way they were dressed,” he said.

“I'd like to see how they're doing now. I'm excited to see how their music has matured.”

Lessons from K-Pop

As for the invasion of K-Pop, which some have dismissed as hype, the musician reminds its fellow artists to learn from its success.

“I think we shouldn't hate Korea because their music is immensely popular. They really invested a lot in their music. They have a certain boldness in their beat. It's a nice lesson for the rest of the world how a certain country can support their industry for it to become a strong player in the global scale. Which Korea has done not just in music but in other industries as well, like Samsung, Hyundai. So it's a good example of foresight and planning.”

The fifth staging of the music festival happens on November 16 at the at the F1 Pit Building, Marina Promenade in Singapore.

"Be Careful with My Heart" to be Replaced by "Kaleidoscope World"

"Be Careful with My Heart" to be Replaced by "Kaleidoscope World"

A dance-musical that pays tribute to OPM icon Francis Magalona is now set to compete in this year's Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF), following the withdrawal of the film version of "Be Careful With My Heart" from the race.
Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) chairperson Francis Tolentino announced Wednesday that "Kaleidoscope World," which shares the title of the Magalona hit, has been selected to complete the eight-film line-up of the 39th MMFF.
Produced by iACT Production, the big-screen musical, according to Tolentino, stars Sef Cadayona, Yassi Pressman, Pia Pilapil, and Alma Concepcion.
"Kaleidoscope World" joins seven other earlier announced entries: the action/thriller films "10,000 Hours" and "Boy Golden"; the comedy-adventures "Torky and My Little Bossing," "Kimmy Dora: Ang Kiyemeng Prequel," and "Girl, Boy, Bakla, Tomboy"; the horror flick "Pagpag"; and the biopic "San Pedro Calungsod: Batang Martir."
Directed by Chito Roño and starring ER Ejercito, "Boy Golden" is similarly an additional entry, as it replaced the Bong Revilla-starrer "My Super Kap" after it was pulled out from the MMFF.
Both "Kaleidoscope World" and "Boy Golden" were among the 15 film submissions to the MMFF announced in June, qualifying them to join the competition in place of official entries withdrawn before the Christmas Day opening.
Tolentino cited this rule in explaining why Star Cinema, the film outfit behind "Be Careful With My Heart," was no longer allowed to submit a different story to replace the daytime series' big-screen version.
Tolentino earlier appealed to Star Cinema to reconsider its decision to pull out "Be Careful With My Heart," but according to him, the ABS-CBN film arm instead proposed a new project.
"For a while, I mulled the possibility of opening the final slot to new movies, including 'My Husband's Lover' (GMA-7 series). But it is in violation of the existing rules of the MMFF," Tolentino said.
With the completion of the eight official entries to the MMFF, Tolentino expressed confidence that the 39th edition of the annual event will surpass last year's gross sales. - ABS-CBNNews.com

Kimbery Peirce Talks About Remaking Classic Horror Tale "Carrie"

Kimbery Peirce Talks About Remaking Classic Horror Tale "Carrie"

From director Kimbery Peirce (TV's “The L Word”) comes Columbia Pictures' new thriller “Carrie” based on the Stephen King novel and starring Chloe Grace Moretz and Julianne Moore.
“Carrie” is a reimagining of the classic horror tale about Carrie White (Moretz), a shy girl outcast by her peers and sheltered by her deeply religious mother, Margaret (Moore). The teenaged girl unleashes telekinetic terror on her small town after being pushed too far at her senior prom.
The filmmaker talks about the eagerly anticipated remake in the following interview.
Question. What was your reaction when you first heard about the opportunity of shooting a new version of “Carrie”?
Kimberly Peirce. I loved [Brian] De Palma’s version of the movie. So, out of respect for a friend and a fellow director who had made a classic with this material I called him and expressed my interest in doing a contemporary version. And he said, “You’ve got to do it!”
Q. What appealed to you about this story that made you want to direct it?
Peirce. When I re-read King’s amazing book I was hit by the sheer fun and power of the story and his storytelling and the delight he takes with all his characters. I wanted to bring the audience as deeply as possible inside Carrie’s journey - inside her intense longing and effort to be a normal teenager amidst the mockery of her peers; inside her discovery and use of these amazing powers; inside her strange and deep bond with her religious and protective mother, Margaret; and inside the fatal conflicts that arise as Carrie ventures into the world to become a woman.
Q. How do you see Carrie?
Pierce. I see her as someone who is poor, self-sheltered, innocent and desperately curious about the world.
Q. Why did you choose Chloe Moretz for the main role of Carrie in this new film?
Peirce. There are many kids that try to be actors every year, but Chloe is someone who has been consistently cast in movies and done good work. And she has great screen presence! So, that’s where we started with her…
Q. And what has she been like to work with?
Peirce. Chloe Moretz is amazing! Obviously any director is going to say that about their main actor, but what is unique about her is that she is a wonderful performer that has beautifully been able to play a really precocious adult aged-up girl. She is on the verge of blossoming, and this is the story of a girl who blossoms. So, we also had youth on our side.
Q. What is her relationship with her mother Margaret like in your eyes?
Peirce. Margaret and Carrie’s profound mother/daughter relationship is the heart and soul of the movie as Margaret tries to prevent her daughter from growing up and using her powers. From there you widen out to include all the other characters that help to push Carrie to her ultimate end. I wanted to make an emotional, modern and very fun version of this story.
Q. How did you encourage Chloe to go through that transformation?
Peirce. By telling her that she had to have a teenage rebellion. That got her interested… And, in acting terms, she did it!
Q. And what can you say of Julianne Moore, who plays Carrie’s mother?
Peirce. Julianne is a dream to work with! She has experience and great command of her craft. And she also has fantastic instincts, a wild side, and a willingness to go over the edge where you want and need her to go to bring the character to life. As a writer/director you write material, you imagine how it will be performed and, if you’re lucky, you get an actor of Julianne’s caliber and talent who takes it to a whole new place which is deeper, more real and more specific than you imagined. She is mesmerizing and the soul of this movie with Chloe.
Q. Do you believe that being a woman helped you identify even better with Carrie and her story?
Peirce. I like to think that men and women can direct the same movies; but certainly, as a director, you draw from your own experience. I have a mother, and there are some mother/daughter issues that are mind-blowing in this movie. And I can also identify with being a teenage girl that had a rebellion! So, you grab what you can from your experience but also leap forward to tell your story.
Q. Was it a big undertaking to tell a story that has so many fans from its past incarnations?
Peirce. I didn’t initially see the connection between my work and a horror remake, but when I re-read the book it hit me on such a personal and deep level. Like my other films this one is a protagonist-driven story, yet it is also a rich ensemble piece. Carrie draws a number of vibrant characters that both aid and obstruct her into her journey. And, as she comes into conflict with each of them, their fates collide into a wonderfully emotional and physically violent climax. What thrilled me about doing Carrie was being able to continue this kind of work and amplify it using genre, fantasy, and Visual FX into a new and thrilling landscape.
Q. Did you embrace the opportunity to work with visual effects in this film then?
Peirce. It’s exciting as a filmmaker to be able to play with newer and bigger tools, but the key for me is to remain constantly grounded in story and character. I hope you’re madly in love with and engaged by Carrie, her mother, the other characters and the story, furthered by the effects.
Q. How did you shoot the famous scene where they dump blood on Carrie during her prom?
Peirce. Usually you cover action sequences with multiple cameras because you typically get only one or two chances with it. We needed the blood dump to be as impactful, terrifying and fun as possible. So, we did months of research and development, tested dozens of blood dumps, and found every possible problem. A straightforward bucket pour misses the target; but, using a chute, which guarantees a direct hit, it causes the human head to act like an umbrella, sending liquid flying off. Thin blood falls off; thick blood is gross and gooey; too little blood runs out; too much is an avalanche. We went from 3 to 4 to 5 gallons, settled on 5 feet above, chose a 45-degree cascading pour, and set the viscosity and thickness to get the right look. And still we had no guarantees it would work when Chloe was under the rig. We were literally all holding our breath, and then it worked! People have asked me how much blood we used in making the movie… I would guess about 1000 gallons!
Opening across the Philippines in October 16, 2013, “Carrie” is distributed by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International.

Cherry Mobile Owners Talk About Their Endorsers John Lloyd, Kim Chiu, Willie Revillame, Kris Aquino Etc.S

WE JUST RETURNED from visiting our daughter Hannah and her family at Cagayan de Oro. We met at a gathering on the beach in Opol the owners of Cherry Mobile, Roger and Yvette Chiu, who have really gone big time because of the huge success of their reasonably priced cellphones.

They said their very first endorser is John Lloyd Cruz and they’ve been renewing his contract with them for four years now. Then they also got Kim Chiu, Robin Padilla, Willie Revillame and Sarah Geronimo. They say Sarah’s commercial jingle, Click tayo sa Cherry Mobile, is really a big hit with the public.

They’re signing up Kris Aquino as their latest endorser. For the bagets crowd, they also got Kylie Padilla and Jasmine Curtis Smith. They’re not renewing the contracts of some endorsers and they have some very funny and interesting anecdotes with one of them, but they told us not write about it. Sayang.

Maja Salvador Celebrates 25Th Bday & 10Th Anniversary With 'Maja Unveils @ 10' Concert Tour

MAJA SALVADOR is celebrating her 25th birthday on October 5 and her 10th year in showbiz with a concert tour, “Maja Unveils @ 10”, that started in April yet at Glorietta Makati. Since then, she and her guests Cacai Bautista, Thou Reyes and Young JV have also performed in District Mall Imus, Mindanao Civic Center Lanao del Norte, Metro Gaisano Cebu, SM Baliwag, SM Rosales, SM Batangas, Solana Gym Cagayan Valley, Bataan People’s Center and NCC Mall Palawan. Their next stop is SM San Lazaro on September 28, Saturday, then at Kadayawan Hall Davao on October 5 with Rayver Cruz as special guest, and in KCC Convention Center in Gen San in November 9.

It seems only yesterday when Maja was discovered in 2003. Her first soap was “It Might Be You”. In 2006, she won as most promising star by the Guillermo Mendoza Awards and the best new female star in the Golden Screen Awards and Star Awards for her role as a psychic girl in “Sukob”. Other films she did were “First Day High”, “One More Chance”, “Cinco”, “Villa Estrella” and “24/7”. On TV, she was launched in 2009 in “Nagsimula sa Puso”, then did other soaps like “Impostor”, “Minsan Lang Kita Iibigin”, “Lumayo Ka Man sa Akin”, “Binondo Girl” and “Ina Kapatid Anak”. She was launched with her then BF Matteo Guidicelli in “My Cactus Heart” but she won best actress in the Urian and Luna Awards for her title role performance in “Thelma”.

What would she say are the highlights of her ten-year career? “Siempre, big blessing na tumagal ako ng ten years kahit very tough ang competition sa showbiz,” she says. “Highlight din my winning the best actress award, then my dancing in ‘ASAP’ kunsaan ako nahasa sa pagsasayaw and doing ‘Ina Kapatid’ kasi nagmarka talaga sa tao yung role ko as Margaux. This concert tour is definitely a big highlight kasi umikot na kami sa buong Pilipinas and now, there are now negotiations to stage it abroad. I myself conceptualized it with Gerry Telan. Since it’s my 10th anniversary, I want to give back to the people so I’m sharing the proceeds to Ephesus, a home for abandoned children in Bulacan.”

Doesn’t she consider her colorful lovelife a highlight, since she was linked to several guys? Coco Martin and Matteo Guidicelli even exchanged blows at a Star Magic Ball because of her. “Sino bas a tingin nyo ang biggest highlight sa kanila?” she asks us.

We tell her it’s definitely the one who’s her present, Gerald Anderson, as it even affected her friendship with Kim Chiu and she got a late of hate mail from bashers. How did this affect her? “Wala ka namang magagawa sa ganun. Tanggapin mo na lang kaysa sagutin sila, para lang hindi na humaba. Respetuhin na lang ang opinion ng ibang tao. Basta ang importante, kilala mo ang sarili mo.”

What’s her latest projects? “I finished a movie with Sen. Jinggoy Estrada, ‘Tatay’, directed by Joey Reyes. It starts na para kaming aso’t pusa then we become best friends. Patapos na rin ang ‘Status: It’s Complicated’ sa Regal, directed naman by Chris Martinez. I play a conservative girl looking for Mr. Right pero ang natagpuan ko, si Jake Cuenca na super babaero. Kasama rin namin dito sina Eugene Domingo, Solenn Heussaff and Paulo Avelino. On TV, I’m about to start a new soap, ‘Hanggang Kailan Kita Mamahalin’, with Angel Locsin, Jericho Rosales and JC De Vera.”

What’s her birthday wish? “Now na 10 years na ako, I want to do something new. Since nakilala na ako sa acting and dancing, I now want to be a singer. I’m taking voice lessons and may offer na rin to do an album. Kaya nga enjoy ako in performing sa concert ko as a singer-performer dahil I get to sing live. Dream ko na kasi noon pa na mag-perform talaga sa harap ng maraming tao and now natutupad na yung pangarap na yun in ‘Maja Unveils @ 10’.”

TJ Trinidad Surprised That He Won Cinemalaya Best Supporting Actor For 'Sana Dati'

TJ TRINIDAD won best supporting actor in the last Cinemalaya’s Director Showcase category for his creditable portrayal of a much harassed groom in "Sana Dati", whose bride (Lovi Poe) is dilly-dallying with her decision to walk down the aisle and needlessly delays their wedding.

Personally, we feel he should have been nominated as best actor as he’s playing a lead role, not just a supporting one. He’s there from beginning to end and has more scenes than the two other actors in the movie, Benjamin Alves and Paulo Avelino. And he really gets our sympathy as his character seems sensible enough and doesn’t deserve an indecisive bride who can’t seem to let go of the past and move on.

In the end, TJ did not forsake Lovi even if she continued to pine for a lost love. The final scene at the cemetery where Lovi visited the grave of her dead past boyfriend is where TJ finally shows how much he truly loves and accepts her, warts and all. His love for her is unconditional and we’re glad that before the film is finally over, Lovi finally wakes up and leaves the shoes symbolizing her deceased lover at the cemetery.

You have to see the movie for yourself, which opens this Wednesday in theatres nationwide, to see what a sacrificing and selfless TJ really is in “Sana Dati”. But how come TJ was absent at the Cinemalaya Awards night and he wasn’t able to get his trophy in person?

“I was busy then at home,” he says. “Nag-off yung yaya ng baby namin and my wife was also busy, so ako ang personal na nag-alaga sa aming baby boy. I was really surprised that I won. Hindi ko ine-expect, but I really want to thank all the jurors for the honor. It’s my first acting award kaya, siempre, this is very important for me.”

On TV, TJ will soon be seen again in GMA-7’s new sci-fi thriller, “Genesis”, that will replace “My Husband’s Lover”. He joins the powerhouse case headed by Dingdong Dantes, Lorna Tolentino, Rhian Ramos and Lauren Young.

There Are So Many Good Roles For Actresses This Year But Few For Actors

IT’D BE HARD to choose who’d be the best actress this year as we have so many strong and superb performances among our actresses. Those who shone include Cherie Gil in “Sonata”, Vilma Santos in “Ekstra”, Nora Aunor in “Kuwento ni Mabuti” (who was bested as best actress by neophyte child star Teri Malvar of “Huling Cha Cha ni Anita” at the CineFilipino Filmfest), Lorna Tolentino in “Burgos”, Rustica Carpio in “Ano ang Kulay ng mga Nakalimutang Pangarap”, Lovi Poe in “Sana Dati”, Irma Adlawan in “Transit” and “Bamboo Flowers” and Eugene Domingo in a straight drama role in the forthcoming “Mga Kuwentong Barbero”.

But if you’d notice, except for Joel Torre in “On the Job”, there are not really that strong male performances so far. Local actors obviously are a much neglected lot as filmmakers don’t seem to have truly good and challenging roles for them, which is understandable why the jurors in the recent Cinemalaya filmfest didn’t choose any best actor in the Directors Showcase category. In the New Wave Category, the best actor winner is Mimi Juareza, a transgender, and we’re sure she’ll be nominated anew in next year’s award derbies.

The only other performances we can think of that are worth mentioning are those of Alex Medina as the internet scammer who falls in love with his target victim in “Babagwa”, Arnold Reyes as the dying rebel who bonds with his long lost daughter for the last time in “Tag-araw ni Twinkle”, Jake Cuenca as the gay rebel hopelessly in love with a comrade in “Lihis” and Allen Dizon as the psychotic constabulary captain in “Lauriana”.

And mind you, the year is not yet over. Forthcoming films in the last three months of the year might yet spring more surprises. This is indeed a year of good harvest for local films. Even in the best picture category, there are so many that are truly outstanding.

George Clooney Learns to Space-Walk in “Gravity”

George Clooney Learns to Space-Walk in “Gravity”

“I grew up with the space race; I am a child of that era,” says George Clooney, who stars with Sandra Bullock in Warner Bros.’ new, deep space thriller “Gravity.” “I have always loved the idea of space exploration and am in awe of the people who do it. They really are the last of the great pioneers.”
In “Gravity,” Dr. Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) is a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission, with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalski (Clooney) in command. But on a seemingly routine mission, disaster strikes. The shuttle is destroyed, leaving Stone and Kowalski completely alone—tethered to nothing but each other and spiraling out into the blackness. The deafening silence tells them they have lost any link to Earth…and any chance for rescue. As fear turns to panic, every gulp of air eats away at what little oxygen is left. But the only way home may be to go further out into the terrifying expanse of space.
“The thing about adversities is that they take us out of our comfort zone,” explains director Alfonso Cuarón. “In order to do that with Ryan, we needed her to be new to spaceflight. But for the rest to make sense, we also needed a mentor figure—someone who could guide her through the process and help her figure things out.”
That mentor is Matt Kowalski, portrayed by Clooney, who says he had a list of reasons for wanting to do the film, starting with the script. “I loved the screenplay, which is the first reason you ever want to make a film if you’re an actor. And I liked the character a lot; I thought he would be fun to play.”
Clooney continues that “Gravity” also presented the chance to team with two people he admires greatly. “Sandy and I have been good friends for very long time, but we never found the right vehicle for us to do something together. I have always had tremendous respect for her, and I couldn’t ask for a better partner to act with. And I think Alfonso Cuarón is one of the most interesting and talented directors we have. I honestly thought ‘Children of Men’ was a masterpiece, and have wanted to work with him. So everything about this seemed like a great opportunity to me, and I was proud to be a part of it.”
Cuarón describes Clooney’s character as “the counterpart to Ryan. Matt is very much at ease in that environment; he is as expansive as Ryan is insulated. If you were going into space, Matt is the guy you would want with you.”
Those on the set felt the same way about the man. “George is a life force,” states Bullock. “In many respects, he does parallel his character because Matt is the one who breathes life into every single moment; he loves nothing more than seeing the world from the vantage point of space. But what’s so electric about George isn’t just his face, it’s his voice. He has that voice that makes you feel like he’s a friend; he’s someone who has been there and can make you believe everything is going to be okay. It’s like that for Ryan with Matt. And that’s how George is to work with…until he starts causing trouble and then you have to watch your back every minute,” she teases.
Clooney’s practical jokes have, in fact, become the stuff of Hollywood legend, but the parameters established by the production’s technology forced something of a moratorium. “It required a certain discipline because of all the elements that were already in place,” the actor acknowledges. “So I just put myself in the hands of the smartest guys in the room, beginning with Alfonso. But working with Sandy made it fun, so there was truly a lot of laughing.”
Opening across the Philippines in October 3 in IMAX 3D, Digital 3D, 2D and regular theatres, “Gravity” is distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment company.

The press fellowship, which takes place during this year’s UN General Assembly, will also provide participants exclusive first-person access to the world’s top experts, policymakers, and leaders such as Al Gore and will.i.am.
“I hope to use this opportunity to share our Philippine experience and bring to the international stage our concerns and efforts in health care. I also look forward to comparing notes with my fellow health journalists from around the world to give me a better understanding of global health issues and how it affects us Filipinos,” said Corpuz.
ABS-CBN’s Senate beat reporter Ryan Chua, meanwhile, was awarded the prestigious Chevening scholarship, making him the only media practitioner among this year’s batch of eleven scholars. Chua is currently taking his Master’s degree in International Journalism at the City University London.
Chua said the one-year scholarship will train him to be a global journalist with an international perspective, “able to report global issues authoritatively and help a local audience appreciate their importance.”
“I plan to do this by regularly pitching and pursuing stories that matter to the Philippines and the rest of the world,” said Chua.
Jeff Canoy, who reports on defense and disasters for ABS-CBN, is currently attending Malaysian Press Institute’s International Journalism Fellowship in Kuala Lumpur to specialize in multimedia journalism. The fellowship, Canoy shared, trains participants to become a one-man team during coverage and deliver news on different media platforms.
“The fellowship is all about the future — where journalism is heading — one-man teams covering the news equipped with tech-savvy skills and strong sense of ethics. It’s been daunting and a lot of hard work but the fellowship has taught me a lot of what I could do in my chosen craft in terms of telling stories in various platforms. ABS-CBN News is all about integrating platforms now so the fellowship is a perfect fit,” said Canoy.
In August this year, Paul Henson, executive producer of ABS-CBN’s late-night newscast “Bandila” flew to the United States to join the other nine fellows in the World Press Institute’s international journalism program.
The program has immersed Henson in US governance, politics, business, media, journalistic ethics, and culture through studying, visiting the headquarters of major news organizations, and interviewing top journalists, editors, government officials, leaders, and social activists throughout the country.
“Interacting with top global journalists and industry leaders is such an intellectual and cultural stimulation. I take pride in being a Filipino journalist, but this program also makes me realize that Philippine media has so much more catching up to do to become mature and responsive as an industry and in step with the changing times. This program is powerful tool to enable me to become a better journalist,” shared Henson.

It's the Revenge of the Lefovers in “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2”

The new, 3D animated comedy “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2” picks up where Sony Pictures Animation’s mouth-watering 2009 original left off. Inventor Flint Lockwood thought he saved the world when he destroyed his most infamous invention - a machine that turned water into food causing cheeseburger rain and spaghetti tornadoes. But Flint soon learns that his invention survived and is now creating food-animals – "foodimals!" Flint and his friends embark on a dangerously delicious mission to battle hungry tacodiles, shrimpanzees, hippotatomuses, cheespiders and other foodimals to save the world – again!
Starring the voices of Bill Hader, Anna Faris, James Caan, Will Forte, Andy Samberg, Benjamin Bratt, Neil Patrick Harris, Terry Crews, and Kristen Schaal, “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2” is directed by Cody Cameron and Kris Pearn. Story by Phil Lord & Christopher Miller and Erica Rivinoja. Screenplay by Erica Rivinoja and John Francis Daley & Jonathan Goldstein. Inspired by the book Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs written by Judi Barrett & illustrated by Ron Barrett.
Flint Lockwood and his pals discover that something big was leftover on the island of Swallow Falls. The action picks up just sixty seconds after the first film ends: Flint Lockwood has destroyed his greatest invention, the Flint Lockwood Diatomic Super Mutating Dynamic Food Replicator, or FLDSMDFR for short. That invention was a wild success, in that it could turn water into food, and an unmitigated disaster, in that it unleashed a torrent of deadly food weather that threatened to destroy the world. Flint blew it up – or, at least, that’s what he thought.
“I love the world of Cloudy,” says Cody Cameron, who directs the film with Kris Pearn. A story board artist on the first three “Shrek” films, as well as the Sony Pictures Animation films “Surf’s Up,” the first “Cloudy,” Cameron says, “Of all the films I’ve worked on, `Cloudy' is my favorite. So to get the chance to go back and revisit the characters in this new, crazy world that we were developing made this a really exciting project for me.”
“When we started the brainstorming process, we found a very rich amount of elements to explore – not just a new adventure, but also the characters,” says Pearn, who headed up the story team on the first “Cloudy” film. “On this adventure, all of the characters get to express themselves more fully. For example, Earl, the town cop, wants to protect the home he loves so much. Manny – who was so silent through most of the first film – reveals more and more hidden sides of himself. Sam, the one person who understands Flint better than anybody else, is the one to see the island for what it is – an expression of Flint’s creativity.”
Cameron and Pearn were hand-picked to direct “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2” by Phil Lord & Christopher Miller, the writers and directors of the first film. “I worked on the movie for 4½ years – the last 3½ with Phil and Chris,” says Pearn. “In the story department, you tend to have a small crew and you spend a lot of time with the directors. We got to know each other well and there was a lot of trust there. Cody and I were on the movie pretty much until the end, which is unusual, because it’s common as a film winds down to let board artists move on to other projects. So, once Phil and Chris decided they weren’t going to direct the sequel, it was an organic choice to allow us to take the reins – and not only that, but I think they saw how important it was to us to maintain the unique humor and quirkiness that made the first film so special as we embarked on the sequel.” Lord and Miller remain acti vely involved with the project as executive producers.
“On the first film, Phil and Chris were the first directors I’d ever worked with who treated the film like a writer’s room,” says Pearn. “Anybody with a thought that could help the film – even assistants and PAs – could pipe up. After all, a good idea can come from anywhere. We found that very helpful, and we’re keeping that going on this film. It’s very helpful when you can trust the crew and there’s a give-and-take in how the show is run.”
Lord and Miller say, “Kris and Cody were great collaborators on the first film and we loved working with them to bring these fun, unique characters back to life. The final result is a beautiful, stylized, funny film and we are thrilled that the Cloudy franchise has continued on in the hands of so many great people.”
