Mark Felt Movie Review: Liam Neeson In A Non-Action Film About One Of The Greatest Whistleblowers In History

'MARK FELT, THE MAN WHO BROUGHT DOWN THE WHITE HOUSE', is based on the true story of Deep Throat, the mole considered as one of the greatest whistleblowers in history who leaked information to the press that led to the infamous Watergate Scandal, where the Democratic headquarters was bugged, and eventually caused the resignation of Richard Nixon as U.S. president. He was subsequently immortalized in the acclaimed 1976 film, "All the President's Men", but his real identity was never revealed, until 2005, when his full story was told exclusively in Vanity Fair. He died 3 years later at the age of 95.

Serious film aficionados would probably enjoy this film more than those who just go for escapist entertainment who'd probably prefer its lead star, Liam Neeson, more for his action roles in the "Taken" franchise than for portraying the role of "Mark Felt'. Someone behind us was complaining to his seatmate: "Akala ko ba, action ito? Daldalan pala!"

Felt is a grizzled 30-year old veteran in the FBI in the last year of Nixon's first term in the white house. He's a good friend of then FBI head, J. Edgar Hoover (who had his own filmbio starring Leonardo DiCaprio), and some Nixon cohorts want him to betray Hoover so they can fire him. But Felt explains Hoover's much ballyhooed "private files", saying that when an official who is "seen with a woman not his wife, or a man not his wife", this is reported in writing and all these memos go to Felt on their way to the files of Hoover. He tells his interrogators: "All your secrets are safe with us."

Felt is obviously a man of integrity who believes that the FBI is the most respected institution in the world and the best way to lose its credibility and independence is for the government to try to control it. This happened when Hoover died in 1972 and instead of promoting the more deserving Felt as its new director, Nixon chooses L. Patrick Gray (Martin Csokas), an outsider who has no experience in law enforcement but someone the government can control and manipulate.

It will take more than a year before the press and the rest of the country get to put things together to figure out what the Watergate break-in means and how high it goes up in their corrupt government. When the Watergate break-in occurs, Gray orders Felt to iron things out in 48 hours, making Felt disgusted so he keeps investigating until he ferrets out the truth.

Felt was able to connect the dots quickly when he learned that the burglars are all former CIA and FBI operatives, some of whom are connected to the committee that aims to re-elect Nixon to the presidency. He then detects that it's actually just the tip of the iceberg concerning the dirty tricks that the Nixon administration has been conducting for several years.

In "All the President's Men", the highlight is his communication with Bob Woodward of The Washington Post, played in the movie by Robert Redford. But since that has already been shown in that past film, here, the more attention-getting interview is the one he had in a diner with Sandy Smith (Bruce Greenwood), a Time Magazine reporter who's also covering the Watergate affair. The talks with Woodward are mostly done on a phone booth beside a laundromat.

To show that the film is not mere adulatory hagiography, writer-director Peter Landesman ("Concussion") shows Felt's efforts to crack down the militant group of activists called the Weather Underground which unnerves the White House. After he retired, Felt was sued for violating the Constitution because of his pursuits of the activists, but the late Ronald Reagan later pardoned him.
The film also shows Felt's miserable personal life. Diane Lane plays his wife, an alcoholic who's apparently unhappy because Felt devoted more time to his career. He has a daughter, Joan (Maika Monroe), who runs away and joins a hippie commune.

Liam Neeson dominates the film and gives a commanding title role portrayal of Felt. Among the men working for him, it is Josh Lucas who stands out as Charlie Bates, who obviously knew that it was Felt who is the source of the leaks to the press. But the film itself fails to equal the very high standard sets by "All the President's Men", which remains to be one of the best American films made but, ironically, didn't win best picture then but was eclipsed by the underdog story of "Rocky".

The film is interesting to watch, but after 40 years, it feels more like just footnote in history now. In contrast, "All the President's Men" offers more authenticity in showing us how reporters think and operate. The film "Spotlight" also did this, but in a lesser way and, again ironically, it won Oscar best picture but "All the President's Men", definitely the better film, did not. But the film can now be seen in the context of the Trumph administration and its own share of scandals. So who will dare to be the Mark Felt of the new millennium?

Gabby Concepcion & Sharon Cuneta Both Mentioned By Pres. Rodrigo Duterte In The Same Speech, He Curses One And Praises The Other

GABBY CONCEPCION's career got a big boost when no less than Pres. Duterte dropped his name while delivering a speech at the recent Dept of Justice anniversary affair at PICC. He was lambasting ABS-CBN top honcho Gabby Lopez for accepting payment for his election campaign TV commercials but not airing it.

Instead of Lopez, though, he mentioned Concepcion instead, with matching expletives. To quote: "Ikaw! Gabby Concepcion, mukha kang pera, p— ina ka. Eh totoo naman, sus."

The booboo was quickly circulated on social media and reached Gabby C. in no time at all. Gabby C. took it good naturedly and posted in his social media account: "We all make mistakes. Thank you for watching Ika 6 na Utos, Sir President. #DU30 #ika6nautos #forgive #goodvibes #goodvibesonly #gmadrama." Another post said: "Sorry na lang, Gabby Concepcion. Collateral damage."

In the same speech, the president also mentioned Gabby's ex, Sharon Cuneta. He said Sen. Kiko Pangilinan, who's with the opposition, is his friend. "May utang na loob ako sa kanya. Si Inday (his daughter, now mayor of Davao), when she was in grade 5 or 6, sabi ko, anak, anong gusto mong birthday gift? She said, gusto niyang makasama si Sharon Cuneta. So I called Sen. Pangilinan and I said I owe you for doing this for my daughter."

Sharon also posted her comment on social media: "Thank you, Mr. Pres. Duterte, Sir, for what you said on the news about me and my friend Mayor Inday Sara last night. May God bless you, Sir! So kilig!"

KC Montero Tries Acting In A Soap As Villain To Dingdong Dantes In 'Alyas Robin Hood', Talks About Ex-Wife Geneva Cruz & New Beauty Queen GF

KC MONTERO is better known as a radio and TV host but he's now into acting in "Alyas Robin Hood". "I myself requested GMA-7 to give me an acting job kasi I've been hosting for the longest time," he says. "I've tried acting before but I didn't focus on it and concentrated more on being a good host and video jock. But now that I turned 40, I want to explore acting more. I saw my brother Troy acting again on TV and I said I can also do that since I speak better Tagalog than him. So now, I'm playing a kontrabida role in 'Alyas Robin Hood' as the right hand man of a corrupt senator, played by Edu Manzano, and I'm really enjoying it."But he continues to do hosting with two TV shows on a cable channel. After his 8-year relationship with Geneva Cruz, he now also has a new girlfriend, former Miss New Zealand Stephanie Dods. Are they planning to tie the knot soon? "We've talked about it. Baka next year. Who knows what will happen? Bahala na."

How's his relationship with Geneva? "After our divorce, we've both moved on. We communicate every now and then sa Facebook, Instagram, Hi, how are you? Mas may communication ako with her son, Heaven. He spent his childhood years with me and I do miss that kid. He's all grown up now at 21 years old, living in L.A. and I wish him the best as he's a really good boy."

'You With Me' Starring Devon Seron And Korean Actor Hyun Woo Is A Well Made Crowd Pleaser About An Interracial Romance

WE WERE INVITED to the premiere night of "You With Me", the first Filipino-Korean collaboration at Trinoma last Tuesday night and Devon Seron's two Korean partners, Hyun Woo and Jin Ju Hyung, were both in attendance. Actually, it's Hyun Woo who is the leading man while Ju Hyung, who the press got to interview at length in the film's last presscon, plays only a supporting role as his assistant and had minimal exposure.

Pinoy director Rommel Ricafort has helmed a real crowd pleaser. Hopeless romantic viewers are squealing with delight in so many scenes and we can't blame them because there's no denying that Devon has endearing chemistry with Hyun Woo.

Devon plays Kim Soriano, a rich girl with over protective parents, Tonton Gutierrez and Assunta de Rossi, who are both very strict with her. She is allowed to work, but only at home, as an English tutor for Korean students online. As a result, she rebels and runs away, going to Korea by herself to proclaim her independence.

In Korea, she meets Jason (Hyun Woo) and it's easy to predict that they will eventually fall in love with each other. But wait, it seems Jason has a hidden agenda all along. He actually wants to use Devon just to take revenge on her parents because they caused a tragedy in his own family some years ago.

We can only reveal up to that, because sharing more about the narrative will be too much of a spoiler. Suffice it to say that those who love a good romantic story will truly enjoy watching this film. Devon has a winning presence and her acting is very natural, not at all forced or engineered. Hyun Woo is not good looking by Hollywood standards but he is oozing with so much charming on-screen charisma. Both of them also act persuasively in their dramatic scenes when Devon discovers Hyun's hidden motives.

The film also serves as a short travelogue as Hyun tours Devon around his city. We also like it that Direk Rommel makes liberal use of several songs in a lot of scenes, not only Tagalog but also Korean and English songs. Technical credits are all adequate, except for some scenes that seem overscored. And yes, we also wish that they got a better stylist for Devon as some of the outfits she was made to wear in the movie just doesn't become her.

I'LL NEVER SAY GOODBYE/MAGPAHANGGANG-WAKAS takes on Africa: ABS Uganda, KTN Kenya, MyTV Africa for the rest of Subsaharan Africa

Magpahanggang-Wakas is heaven-sent to ABS-CBN this year. Christmas is near (meaning, the year is almost through) but the supposed country's biggest TV network has only sold one 2017-produced teleserye this year. That doesn't mean however that it doesn't lord over the current teleserye domination of Africa. The continent is awash with the rerun of successful pre-2017 teleseryes from the station: hits like Dolce Amore, Doble Kara, The Promise, On The Wings of Love (this one will take over shortly  the slot of I'll Never Say Goodbye on My TV Africa), etc.

I am sure, the ABS-CBN bigwigs will be studying the success of GMA in selling more new teleseryes abroad this year. It turned out high domestic ratings is not a guarantee of international success. This teleserye is a case in point. Who would have thought that unlike the 2017 blockbusters, it would eventually be the  only one to be sold  abroad?

Meanwhile, teleserye celebrates its current reign in Africa...

John Lloyd Cruz & Ellen Adarna Have A 'You & Me Against The World' Stance And Just Ignore All Negative Comments About Their Relationship

JOHN LLOYD CRUZ and Ellen Adarna seem to be so madly in love with each other that they have taken a "you and me against the world" stance. They are oblivious to all the criticisms hurles against them and they even seem to enjoy the controversies they are involved in. JLC apologized before, saying he regretted the postings on social media of him acting weirdly and doing the dirty finger sign. But soon after his apology, he posted more gross and yucky photos that we'd rather not describe here at all.

This will not be objectionable if JLC had the same reputation as his "Tabing Ilog" contemporary who's also done a lot of controversial things, Baron Geisler. But JLC is an A-lister, an award-winning and respectable actor. There are occasional reports about him having a drinking problem but he is still admired by a lot of people, both young and old.

But what he's doing now is worse than anything he has done before. Someone says that he seems to be bent on trekking the road to self-destruction, demolishing whatever gains and respectability he has earned for himself before in his long career that started when he was still a teenager.

And it seems JLC is really doing it on purpose. As they say in Tagalog, nananadya. Because a lot of people already lambasted him but he did more undesirable things to taunt them. Maybe he should just tie the knot with Ellen so they can fully enjoy each other's company to the max. Then they can do whatever they want us a couple and just turn a deaf ear to all those who bash them. Who knows? They might even live happily never after. And as the saying goes: "Laging nasa huli ang pagsisisi!"

Ruffa Gutierrez Wishes John Lloyd Cruz Would Surround Himself With People Who Would Not Put Him In A Bad Light

RUFFA GUTIERREZ was once an item with John Lloyd Cruz so it couldn't be helped if she's asked about JLC's recent controversial postings on Facebook. "May pinagsamahan din naman kami so I texted him and said I offered prayers for him na malampasan niya anuman ang pinagdaraanan niya. He answered me and said he appreciates my concern. We've remained friends naman even if we don't see each other. Maliit lang naman ang industry so it's better to keep your friends."

Did she give him any advice? "No, he's old enough and he knows what he's doing. But for me, personally, I'd rather surround myself with good, positive people who will protect me and not put me in a bad light. It takes so long and hard to build up your career, tapos masisira in an instant. He should be more cautious, lalo na ngayong everyone has a cellphone and can record whatever you're doing then ipo-post sa social media."

What's the status of her boyfriend Jordan Mouyal in their family? "Magkasundo kami ngayon ni Mommy so I just keep things quiet, kasi si Mommy, I don't think she'd ever accept anyone for me. So pagdating sa lovelife, iniiwas ko na lang na yang topic na yan and we just talk about business and work. Kung ayaw niya, huwag na lang ipilit for the sake of peace and harmony. But si Mommy lang ang ayaw sa kanya. The other members of our family, tanggap naman siya, including my daughters Lorin and Venice."

Since her daughters are also joining showbiz, will she be a stage mom like Tita Annabelle Rama? "Sana hindi, pero naiintindihan ko naman si Mommy kasi ngayong teenagers na ang mga anak ko, I'm starting to sound like her na nga in reminding them about boys. Sabi nga nila, I'm much more strict daw than their Lola. So pinapaliwanag ko naman sa kanila ang side ko so they'll know where I am coming from. Kung maaari nga, sabi ko, sana, 30 years old na sila kapag nag-boyfriend sila."

Devon Seron And Korean Leading Man Jin Ju Hyung Face The Local Press To Promote Their Upcoming Movie, 'You With Me', Opening September 27

DEVON SERON and one of her leading men, Jin Ju Hyung, in the Filipino-Korean co-production, "You with Me", faced the press together to promote their upcoming romantic comedy that opens in theaters on September 27. The other leading man, Hyun Woo, will be coming later to also help promote their movie.

Ju Hyung was born in South Korea on November 24, 1994. He speaks fluent English and started doing TV dramas in 2013 in "Scandal: A Shocking and Wrongful Incident" for MBC where he played Detective Goo. This was followed by "Blade Man" which ran on KBS2 from 2013 to 2014. His third show was "Cinderella and the Four Knights" for TVN in 2016 and "Hwarang, The Poet Warrior" on KBS2 also in 2016. The last show he did is "Suspicious Partner" on SBS this year.
So how is it working with Devon in "You With Me"? "I enjoyed working with her as she is kind and has a nice personality," he says. "She's also a very cute lady."

Does he think she is girlfriend material? "For sure! I like her. We became quite close as we both speak English and can communicate with each other. But as of now, we're just good, close friends."
Why? Does he have a girlfriend at the moment? "No. I had a girlfriend before but as of now, no girlfriend."

If given the chance, would he like to work in Manila? "Why not?" Does he know of other Filipina actresses? "No, only Devon. And she's the best."

They have a Filipino director for their movie, Rommel Ricafort. How was it working with Direk Rommel? "He makes me feel comfortable on the set so I can act easily, more effectively. He's different from Korean directors with whom I have some bad memories. With him, I really felt more comfortable."

Ju Hyung will be staying in Manila for ten days and he hopes to visit some of our tourist spots until their film's opening day on September 27. Here's hoping their film will be successful, considering that they'll be shown simultaneously with "Last Night" starring the formidable tandem of Piolo Pascual and Toni Gonzaga.

Mother! Movie Review: A Baffling Film That Is An Allegory For Mother Nature Or Mother Earth

WRITER-DIRECTOR Darren Aronofsky is noted for his disturbing, surreal films. As a real auteur, he first gained fame in 1998 for the low-budget psychological thriller, "Pi", a study in mental obsession, followed in 2000 by "Requiem for a Dream", which gave an Oscar nomination to lead actress Ellen Burstyn.

His third film, "The Fountain" in 2006, about a man, Hugh Jackman, who resorts to time travel to save his loved one, got mixed reviews. In 2008, he gave Oscar nominations for Mickey Rourke and Marisa Tomei in "The Wrestler". He finally made someone win the Oscar in 2010, Natalie Portman as best actress for "Black Swan". In 2014, he did the Biblical epic, "Noah", which became his most successful at the box office.

He now comes up with "Mother!", a work more puzzling than anything he has done before. Local viewers who just want to be entertained by simple-minded romcoms will surely be turned off as Aronofsky seems quite determined to intentionally baffle and outrage his viewers. Surely, some folks will love it, but there are more viewers who'll be apalled and hate it.

The characters here have no names. The setting is set in a remote location where a Victorian house stands alone and seems isolated from the rest of humanity. A young woman (Jennifer Lawrence) is married to a much older man (Javier Bardem), a poet who's currently having writer's block. She's renovating the house by herself after it was gutted by a fire.

Their doorbell rings one night and an old man (Ed Harris), who claims to be a doctor and a fan of the husband, comes in. Javier asks him to stay, much to the amazement of Jennifer since he's a total stranger. Soon, his wife (Michelle Pfeiffer) arrives, followed by their two sons who are fighting each other (real life brothers Brian and Domhnall Gleeson) over their dad's will. The invasion of their privacy is aggravated when one brother kills the other one, with unwanted guests arriving later to condole with the couple for losing their son.

After this chaotic first half, a short period of calm follows with Jennifer getting pregnant and delivering a baby, then the second cycle of hellish nightmares begin. Javier has finished a new book and his fans intrude on their home, leading to an unspeakable act which we won't describe as that will be a sure spoiler.

No doubt some viewers will find this revolting and we won't be surprised at all if others will say it makes no sense at all. It reminds us of David Lynch's similarly cryptic films, like "Mulholland Drive", where you can't figure out whether what's going on is real or just a hallucination.

We don't know how you'll take the film but it's apparently an allegory. We thought at first it's something like Polanski's "Rosemary's Baby". But judging from all the insanity, we think Jennifer signifies Mother Nature or Mother Earth, and the intruders are us, people who assault our environment and abuses her hospitality. Ed and Michelle are Biblical references to Adam and Eve who intrude on the garden of Eden and upset it, with their sons standing for Cain and Abel. It also touches on Gaia philosophy about the survival of species.

The film opens with Jennifer looking at the audience as fire consumes her, after which we see Javier putting some kind of gem or crystal on a stand. You'll figure out what these things mean at the film's climax but, generally, what is happening on screen is not everyone's cup of tea.

Technically, you'd be astonished how the movie is expertly staged, from the way the house is constructed and photographed in 16mm. film, with the camera stalking Jennifer in so many meaningful close ups and extended long takes that assault the viewer. This is intended to instill a sense of dread and claustrophobia in chronicling Jennifer's horrified reactions to all the intrusion, abuse and mayhem going on around her done not by zombies or monsters but supposedly everyday normal people.

Aronofsky practically throws everything at the viewers, including the kitchen sink which "pasaway" guests destroy right in front of Jennifer. Definitely, this is the least accessible of his films, even more of a conundrum than "Black Swan". Javier, Michelle and Ed give excellent support to Jennifer. But it looks like Jennifer herself doesn't have full grasp or understanding of her very difficult role as the only seemingly normal person in very insane surroundings. It's really a taxing and difficult character that needs someone with a more forceful screen persona which will enable her to connect more effectively with the viewer. Here, the 59-year old Michelle easily steals scenes from Jennifer without much trying to.

Also, the film is too long at two hours. There are scenes that have already made its point but still go on for far too long. It's an ambitious work but it's not for every moviegoer as you don't get to be truly invested in all that is happening on screen.

American Assassin Movie Review: Familiar Action-Spy Thriller With Lots Of Violent Action Scenes And A High Body Count

DYLAN O'BRIEN first made waves on TV in "Teen Wolf", then he was projected as a teen action star in "The Maze Runner" franchise. Now, he's being built up as a young action star in "American Assassin", based on Vince Flynn's 2010 novel. If the film would be a big hit, then this will be a franchise like the James Bond or Jason Bourne flicks.

Dylan plays Mitch Rapp. The opening scenes shows him proposing marriage to his girlfriend on the beach in Ibiza when terrorists barge in and begin shooting innocent civilians with assault rifles. His girlfriend is shot to death while he himself is wounded.

Cut to 18 months later. Mitch is thirsty for revenge and tries to infiltrate the terrorist group who murdered his girlfriend. But just before he can kill the leader of the terrorists, U.S. soldiers barge in to intervene. Mitch refuses to get deprived of his vengeance and still gets to stab the terrorist leader repeatedly.

He is then taken to a CIA safehouse and the director (Sanaa Latham) offers him to be part of a covert
operations unit against terrorists called Orion, headed by a US Navy Seal veteran, Stan Hurley (Michael Keaton). Mitch accepts the offer and Hurley then trains him to be an expert assassin.

The first mission he gets involved in is to get back some plutonium, a nuclear material stolen from a decommissioned nuclear facility in Russia. Iranian hardliners want to get it to use it against the U.S. But a former student of Hurley now called The Ghost (Taylor Kitsch), who was believed to have killed in action, has taken the plutonium for himself and wants to sell it to the highest bidder. Taylor was launched to stardom in such action flicks before as "Battleship" and "John Carter" but they didn't well so he's now relegated to playing villain roles.

The Ghost is just like Jason Bourne. They're human weapons created by the military to kill their enemies but later on became renegades who turned on their own creators themselves after feeling shortchanged. The Ghost has an ax to grind against his ex-mentor, Hurley, and kidnaps and torture him. Will Mitch come on time before The Ghost finally exterminates Hurley and also save an entire U.S. navy fleet from a horrible nuclear explosion? That, of course, is a rhetorical question.

As an action film and spy thriller, "American Assassin" seems familiar as we've seen this material before in past action flicks. Revenge as the trigger that motivates the lead character is certainly nothing new. Compared to other more heavyset action stars, Dylan looks much more slight in built, but he compensates by doing lots of athletic and death-defying stunts without a double. He should thank his director, Michael Cuesta (best known for the hit TV series "Homeland"), for keeping the camera quite agile in showing that he himself is the one who is doing his own very physically challenging action sequences.

Though the movie's main premise lacks originality, it makes up for it by coming up with a lot of exciting action scenes that can often be violent and with a high body count, though not as brutal as the "John Wick" movies. It also does a lot of location hopping from Poland to Italy and other countries. The cast is honestly sincerely invested in their earnest performances, with Michael Keaton a stand out as Hurley. We continue to believe that he is the one more deserving to win the 2014 Oscar best actor award for "Birdman".

Jerome Ponce Plays The Perfect Son In 'The Good Son'. Is He Their Dad Albert Martinez' Murderer?

JEROME PONCE is not the original choice for the role of Enzo, Joshua Garcia's hot-headed half brother in "The Good Son", but Elmo Magalona, who begged off along with Janella Salvador. How did he get the role?  "I took the audition," he says. "Actually, marami kami. Pinagawa ako ng eksena with Joshua, nagbatuhan kami ng linya. Siempre, I'm glad na ako ang napili. Maganda yung role kasi si Joshua ang good son, si Nash Aguas ang lonely son, at ako yung perfect son kasi I'm doing very good in school, tapos top athlete pa ako and I'm being groomed to be an executive sa company ng aming family."

How is it being paired with ex-GF Elisse Joson? It's said they had a bad breakup because Elisse's parents didn't approve of him. Being an only child, Elisse dutifully obeyed her parents and she's now more identified with Mccoy de Leon who's paired with her in "The Good Son".

"Okay lang naman," Jerome replies. "When I got the job, hindi ko tinanong kung sino ba ang mga makakasama ko. But when I found out na magiging magkakatrabaho kami, iniisip ko na lang part of our job ito at kung anuman ang mga nangyari before, you should not allow yourself na maapektuhan noon. Chill lang. We just have to be professional about it. Sa set naman, kapag nagkikita kami, we're civil. We smile at each other. Basta ang mas concern ko, yung maging maayos at mapaganda yung work ko."

"The Good Son" will start as a family drama but later on, there will be a twist in the story. Albert Martinez as the father is initially believed to have died due to heart attack, but later on, there will be a shocking twist as the autopsy will show that he was deliberately poisoned by one of his sons.

It Movie Review: Another Boring Interpretation Of A Stephen King Book That Drags For An Interminable Two Hours And 15 Minutes And Offers No Really Good Scares

AFTER THE dissapointing film version of "The Dark Tower", now comes another boring interpretation of a Stephen King book, "It" (not informational technology). Move over, Ronald McDonald, the clown in "It", Pennywise, now eclipses you as a macabre screen presence who eat the arms of little children right in the opening sequence.

"It" was published in 1986, a very thick book of more than 1,000 pages, and was first made into a mini series on TV in 1990. This is the first big screen version. We just want to take note here that the best films of King is based on his non-horror works, like "The Green Mile", "The Shawshank Redemption" and "Stand By Me". The horror novels that also did well on screen are "Carrie" by Brian de Palma and "The Shining" by Stanley Kubrick.

"It" is a current big hit in the States so no doubt there will be a sequel. It's dreadfully directed by Andy Muschietti, who did the awful and forgettable horror flick, "Mama" (2013). The story is set in the late 80s in the beautiful small town of Derry, Maine, which looks so idyllic with its small river with a covered wooden bridge ala-Madison County, old historic edifices and tree-lined streets.

Every 27 years, children go missing in this quaint town and it's caused by Pennywise who preys on little kids. Actually, there are more scary things in the town, including a pedophile dad who abuses his daughter, a super fat protective mother who smothers her son, plus repulsive mean girls who dump garbage on the girl they envy while she's inside the toilet and trigger-happy and knife-wielding bullies in school who beat up their overweight classmates and those afflicted with asthma and stuttering.

A terrorized child can cry for help but no one will come to his aid. So when Pennywise starts making his presence felt, you can actually forget him as he's actually anti-climactic as there are much worse real people in Derry than him. You'd start to wonder how anyone can get out of this hellhole alive.
The brave group of plucky kids, called losers by the bullies, who try to conquer their fears and defy Pennywise are all archetypes. First is the stutterer, Bill (Jaeden Lieberher, who's so good in "Midnight Special") whose younger brother was the first victim of the clown hiding under the sewer.

Then there's the loner fat boy Ben (Jeremy Ray Taylor), the joker Richie (Finn Wolfhard), the asthmathic kid Eddie (Jak Grazer), the shy Jewish boy Stanley (Wyatt Oleff) and the token black boy Mike (Chosen Jacobs). The only girl is the tomboyish Beverly (Sophia Lillis) who serves as the lone leading lady but with an unjustified reputation as a teenage vamp.

In all fairness to this young cast, they can all act pretty convincingly, especially the girl who sizzles as a young spitfire. It is the movie itself that is marred with a lack of narrative cohesion. It offers no really good scares (unlike "Annabelle: Creation" where the audience is screaming out loud from start to finish) and the worst thing, for us, is that you don't root for the kids as they do a lot of very stupid things.

You root for the clown instead. And the movie drags interminably for more than two boring hours, a sorry combination of very bad and stupid ideas that mostly do not work, just like Muschietti's "Mama".

The sociopathic leader of the bullies, Henry (Nicholas Hamilton), is incredibly ruthless in his sadistic tendencies. In torturing the fat boy, he carves his initials on the boy's fat belly with a knife. Later, he uses the knife to kill his own policeman dad. Actually, he's much more scary than the clown who chases kids, change shapes to impersonate other entities, open his mouth wide like a python to reveal multiple fangs, but seems to feel so reluctant in actually killing kids when he already have all the freaking chances to do so.

Beverly also gets to kill her own abusive father. So that makes it two cases of parricides. The level of brutality is really quite off-putting, so we're not surprised that it got a rating of R-13 because of all the violence. It's ironic that even the kids who starred in "It" cannot watch their own movie. You'd really wonder: who is the target audience for this movie?

Jerico Estregan Delighted That Feedback Of Those Who've Seen His Movie, 'Amalanhig, The Vampire Chronicle', Is Very Positive And Encouraging

JERICO ESTREGAN understandably feels tense as his first starring role, "Amalanhig, The Vampire Chronicle", opens in theaters nationwide today. "I gave my all in this action-horror movie," he says. "Nagkasugat-sugat ako in the fight scenes with the monster called amalanhig, pero okay lang, basta sa ikagaganda ng pelikula. And I'm happy kasi, so far, ang ganda ng feedback. Lahat ng nakapanood nito sa premiere night congratulated me dahil nagustuhan nila talaga ang kabuuan ng movie and they liked my performance as the amalanhig fighter."

In the story, he plays a student doing research on the mythical creature called amalanhig in the remote town of San Esteban. Little did he know that he will really encounter the dreaded creature, which is half human-half animal, face to face and put his life in danger.

"Our director, Jun Posadas, did a good job in telling the story, talagang full of suspense. And also part of the mysterious story is that of a cult headed by Nick Aladdin. You'd be surprised on how they're connected with the amalanhig. Viewers who love to watch action-adventure films with a touch of horror will surely appreciate our efforts na mapaganda ang pelikulang ito."

Jerico is paired with Kapuso actress Sanya Lopez in the movie. They play sweethearts and have a couple of kissing scenes. Does he think Sanya is a potential girlfriend? "Yes, of course. Big potential. She's slim and pretty and very cooperative. Dedicated niya sa craft niya and very professional. I'm glad siya ang naging kapareha ko in my first big movie. Definitely girlfriend material siya."

Logan Lucky Movie Review: Comedy-Caper Movie From Oscar-Winning Director Stephen Soderbergh That Fails To Offer Big Laughs

STEPHEN SODERBERGH won the 2001 Oscar best director award for "Traffic", then in 2013, after directing the Emmy-winning "Behind the Candelabra" and the forgettable thriller "Side Effects", he announced he'd retire from directing full length films and focused on TV work. He now returns to the big screen in the movie "Logan Lucky", a heist-comedy film that is not new to him since he has made the "Ocean's 11 to 13" franchise before.

His dry humor is the kind best described as quirky. It reminds us of the absurd comedies of the Coen Brothers who specialize in oddball characters getting engaged in bizarre situations. For sure, local audiences who prefer slapstick will not appreciate it.

The title character is Jimmy Logan (Channing Tatum, who is deglamourized here), a construction worker in West Virginia who just lost his job. He earlier dreamed of being a big football star but he injured his knee. He is basically a good man who loves his daughter very much and tries to cultivate a good relationship with his ex-wife (Katie Holmes).

He's quite responsible in giving child support and wants to be a good provider so he can't afford to be jobless for long. Feeling desperate for being perpetually luckless, he now wants to be Logan Lucky and plots to rob the coffers of a North Carolina speedway during a NASCAR event. They have to siphon off the money sent through an underground pneumatic tube system and is deposited into a vault.

Logan has previously worked in an excavation project under the speedway so he knows how such a daring daylight robbery can be successfully staged. He asks his bartender brother, Clyde (Adam Driver), who lost one arm while fighting as a soldier in Iraq, to help him, along with their free-spirited sister, Mellie (Riley Keogh), to act as their get away driver.

They need the help of an expert safe cracker, Joe Bang (Daniel Craig, playing against type and so totally different from his James Bond persona). The problem is that Joe is currently in prison serving a sentence, so they'll have to cook up an elaborate plan where Joe can leave the prison, join them, and then return secretly before anyone notices that he is missing.

The movie offers some guffaws but no real laugh out loud moments. The A-list actors are actually wasted in this comedy caper that is not well realized. For one thing, you don't really root for the characters. Later on, Hilary Swank is brought in during the meandering last half hour as an FBI investigator who wants to nail the robbers. Swank is the perfect example of an academy award winner whose Oscars (she has two for best actress, mind you) didn't help forward her acting career at all.

No wonder it was a big flop when shown in the States, especially when it was shown simultaneously with the funnier "The Hitman's Bodyguard" that clobbered it at the box office. Soderbergh should just have stayed retired.
