“(Making the decision) was a long process. But the turning point was pinakita sa akin ang gagawin ko sa ABS for the next couple of years,TV5 showed me what they were offering me for the next couple of years. At ang offer ng TV5 na projects was close to my passion,” he said in a press conference Tuesday, April 10, at the Edsa Shangri-La hotel in Mandaluyong City.
As earlier reported, Derek’s first project with TV5 will be “The Amazing Race Philippines.” The actor-host will also host TV5’s Philippine primer of the London Olympics this July.
He believes that “The Amazing Race,” which will start this June, is “perfect for his personality” since he also loves traveling.
Shared passion
Derek admitted ABS-CBN offered him a good line-up of projects. “I was going to get to work with the likes of Angel Locsin who I have wanted to work with for the longest time,” he said.
But he added he was wired and born with a passion for sports.
“I am very passionate about my sports. Acting, I never believed I’d become an actor. I can’t believe till today that I am an actor. I’m so blessed. I’m beginning to love this craft,” Derek explained. “But ever since I was born, sports has been my passion. And I’d never turn my back on that.”
The projects TV5 offered made Derek realize that he and the Kapatid network share the same passion.
“With all the success, which I appreciate so much, with ABS-CBN, at the end of the day, pag pumapasok ka sa trabaho, gusto mong pumasok na you love your job. Which I did in ABS-CBN, but if it’s your passion it’s a totally different thing,” he said. “We looked at the two offers. Yung passion ko lumalabas talaga dito.”
Didn’t ABS-CBN pick up on his enthusiasm for sports? Derek said it may not be part of the network’s plans or goals. “That’s not their (ABS-CBN’s) objective,” he said. “With TV5, it is a part of their network.”
TV5 airs sports programs on AKTV on IBC 13.
According to his manager Joji Dingcong, TV5 first expressed their interest on Derek even before the success of his movies “No Other Woman”and “Praybeyt Benjamin,” two of the highest grossing films in the country last year.
Not P 600 M
Derek also denied reports that his three-year contract with TV5 is worth P 600 million.
“Nowhere near that. I wish,” the actor said.
He admitted that his current TV5 contract is higher than ABS-CBN’s offer but “it was in the similar range.” “But that’s why hindi nga pera e, kasi nga halos magkapareho,” Derek explained.
“I think I’ll be very proud of myself if I can help this network move forward and grow bigger. That’s something money can’t buy,” he added.
Derek said he pays no attention to negative comments saying he’dlose his luster as an actor in TV5.
“Ako, binigyan ako ng proyekto, hindi ko ginagawa paramaging sikat ako. I’m gonna give my best. That’s something given to me, I have a responsibility, gagawin ko lahat ng makakaya para madeliver yung gusto nila."
